AL Close vs Far Enemy, 4-Part Subdivision of Planetary Periods & Avasthas
Arudha Lagna analysis: close vs far enemies — a planet 2H/12H from AL is a "close enemy" (constantly near your image, affecting how others see you); a planet 6H/8H from AL is a "far enemy" (fighting from a distance). The 4-part subdivision of planetary periods in the Three-Parts Rule: within each planet's slot, the planet itself is divided into 4 quarters (not 3 parts). For benefics, the 4-quarter order is: Yogas → Avastha → Occupied house → Owned houses. For malefics: Avastha → Yogas → Owned houses → Occupied house. Avasthas (planetary states) reviewed: how to determine if a planet is happy or sad.
"A planet in the 2nd or 12th from AL is always near your image — watching you, affecting how people see you. It is a close enemy or close ally."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Arudha Lagna — Close vs. Far Enemy Planets
When two enemy planets are both influencing Arudha Lagna, the outcome depends on their proximity:
| Condition | Result |
|---|---|
| Two enemies far apart in the chart | They don't fight; the stronger one dominates; other's image may be suppressed |
| Two enemies very close (conjunct or nearby) | They fight; both images will manifest; person has "split personality" image to the world |
- Example from discussion: Venus (own sign) and Jupiter both in AL; they are enemies but close in degrees → both images manifest; Venus dominates because it is in its own sign (owns the territory)
- If the same two were in far-away corners, Jupiter's image might not even be seen; Venus would simply dominate
Planet in own sign vs. planet with higher longitude:
- If you come to fight in someone else's house, the house owner (own-sign planet) will usually win even if the visitor has higher degree
- Dignity (own sign/exaltation) generally matters more than longitude for determining image dominance at AL
The 4-Part Subdivision of Planetary Periods
After identifying a planet's period (antardasha or sub-period within Narayana Dasha's last 1/3), that period can be further divided into 4 equal parts. The order in which results come differs based on the planet's nature:
Benefic Planet — Order of 4 Parts
| Part | Result Given |
|---|---|
| 1st quarter | Results of the place (which house the planet occupies) |
| 2nd quarter | Results of the lordship (which houses the planet owns) |
| 3rd quarter | Results of yogas (associations with other planets; the planet gives results of those it is with) |
| 4th quarter | Results of avastha (the state/condition of the planet — exaltation/debilitation, happiness/sadness, age, etc.) |
Logic: A benefic planet is like a generous person who visits someone's house — they immediately look around and help with whatever problem is there (focused on where they are). Then they remember their own duties (lordship). Then they help their friends/associates (yogas). Finally, they express their own state.
Malefic Planet — Reversed Order
| Part | Result Given |
|---|---|
| 1st quarter | Results of avastha (self-concern first) |
| 2nd quarter | Results of yogas |
| 3rd quarter | Results of lordship |
| 4th quarter | Results of place |
Logic: A malefic first worries about himself, then his friends/associates, then his duties, and finally about where he is.
Example: Venus in Virgo dasha last 1/3 (D10, Vijay's chart)
- Venus (benefic) in 9H of D10
- 1st quarter: Place results = 9H results (dharmic activities in society; protecting/guiding dharma)
- 2nd quarter: Lordship results = 2nd and 9th lord results (resources, fortune)
- 3rd quarter: Yoga results = Ketu is with Venus → Venus gives Ketu's results (3L joining 9L = break/vacation meeting fortune = bad for job)
- 4th quarter: Avastha = own sign (Taurus), Vriddha (old), Netrapani (vigilant effort)
Avasthas — Planetary States
Avasthas describe the state of mind and operating mode of a planet in the chart.
Major Avasthas Referenced
| Avastha | Meaning | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Vriddha (Old) | Planet is elderly; done enough; wants to relax | Limited willingness to act; laid-back |
| Sushupta (Asleep) | Planet is dormant; doesn't want to wake up | Very low activity; results come with difficulty |
| Jina (Sad) | Planet is sorrowful | Gives results reluctantly or with sadness |
| Vichesta/Vicharitsa | Planet wants to "rock and roll"; excited and happy | Gives results eagerly and bountifully; what you ask, it gives with enthusiasm |
| Bhujana | Planet is relaxed, "having food"; very comfortable | Peaceful, giving results easily without stress |
| Netrapani | Planet is vigilant, watchful; has to work hard; grabs opportunities | Results come but require significant effort; not an easy-results avastha |
Netrapani Avastha (most commonly discussed):
- Planet is NOT in a comfortable state
- Must keep watch, work vigilantly, grab opportunities when they appear
- Exception: If this avastha applies to a planet where the 3rd house/Mars energy is appropriate (e.g., 3rd lord in 3rd house with Mars qualities), the effort can be energizing rather than depleting
- Otherwise: the 9th lord in Netrapani = fortune doesn't come easily; must work hard to receive protection
- Contrast: 2003-2004 periods for Vijay were actually more favorable than the current Netrapani Venus period
Sainari Avasthas (12 Nadi Avasthas)
- There are 12 sainari (Nadi) avasthas — Netrapani is one of them
- Jupiter example: Vuchha/Takashana avastha = "glowing" = giving results joyfully and brightly
- Moon example: Bhujana avastha = relaxed, very comfortable
- Sun example: Vicharitsa/Vichesta avastha = wants to have fun, excited = gives results eagerly
