Arudha Lagna — Two Enemy Planets in AL

A chart from the previous class: Capricorn lagna, Ārūḍha Lagna in Libra with Venus and Jupiter in it.

• Lagna shows who he is. Ārūḍha Lagna shows how the world perceives him.
• Jupiter is the 3rd lord: to the outside world he looks like a man who takes initiative in a wise manner.
• Venus is in his own house: he is seen as a passionate being.
• Two totally different influences on AL → two kinds of image in the world. "Split personality" only in that sense — in how the world sees him.

The student's question: is it because of the degrees?

The answer: because the two are close, that is all.

"If two enemies are in two corners of the room, they don't fight. But if they are in the middle of the room, or even in the corner, if they are together, they tend to fight."

• Here Venus and Jupiter are very close, so both images show.
• Had they been far apart, Jupiter's image might not have been strong at all; Venus would simply dominate.

Who wins

• Libra is Venus's own sign; Jupiter is in an enemy's sign. Venus wins.
• Longitude is a separate consideration. Apart from it, the planet in his own house is more comfortable there.

"If you come to my house to fight with me, probably I am going to win even if you have higher longitude."

The 4-Part Subdivision of Planetary Periods

A Narayana Dasha is cut into three one-thirds: one gives the results of the sign, one of its lord, one of the occupants and aspectors. The one-third in which a planet gives its results is cut again into 4 equal parts. With 12 antardaśās in a daśā, each one-third is 4 antardaśās, so each quarter is one antardaśā.

Benefic Planet — Order of 4 Parts

A benefic always worries first about where he is.

"I may have gone to his house to ask for a $50 donation, but if there is a problem there, I will forget why I came. I will start helping him with the problem."

After the place he remembers his responsibility (the houses he owns). Then the people who are with him. Last, himself: am I happy, am I sad?

Malefic Planet — Reversed Order

Mercury takes the colour of his company

• With benefics he is a benefic; with malefics a malefic.
• With equal numbers of each: whoever is stronger and has the better relation with Mercury decides.
• In the student's D-10 Mercury is with Saturn alone → he becomes like Saturn, a malefic, and follows the malefic order.

Example: Venus in the last 1/3 of Libra dasha (D-10 of the 1953 chart)

Venus is a natural benefic (saumya graha), in Taurus in the 9th house of D-10 with Ketu. The last one-third of Libra daśā is his; its four antardaśās are his four quarters.

In the yoga quarter a planet listens

• Ketu burns everything to ashes. His only goal is mokṣa; a loss pleases him because it breaks a bond. Whatever the planet he joins stands for, he wants to remove the bondage relating to it.
• Whether he can depends on who is stronger. Strength matters more than degrees.
• Venus is strong here (own sign); Ketu is not, though he is in a friend's house. Ketu cannot destroy Venus.
• But in the quarter where Venus gives the results of his yoga, he asks everyone with him what they want. Ketu asks: you are in the 9th giving him fortune — withdraw it, so he may turn spiritual. In that one quarter Venus grants it. In the other quarters he may not listen.

Avasthas — Planetary States

The avasthā quarter gives the results of every state the planet is in.

• Exaltation, own sign: good states. Debilitation, an enemy's house: bad states.
• The age and alertness states (old, asleep, awake…).
• The 12 Śayanādi avasthās.

Venus in the student's chart

The teacher first read the states from the rāśi chart by mistake — old (vṛddha), asleep (suṣupta), sad (dīna), crippled — then corrected himself: for a D-10 daśā read the avasthā in D-10.

Netrapāṇi

• Not a good avasthā. The planet is not receiving results and enjoying them; he has to watch every danger and every opportunity and grab them with his hands when they come.
• An avasthā of activity and effort, not of blessing.
• A malefic avasthā — unless, for example, Mars is the 3rd lord in the 3rd house. For that Mars it is a good avasthā.
