BPHS Ch.9 Balarishta Verses 17–30 (Complete), Apoklimas Explanation & Viprit Rajayoga + Dignity
Verses 17–30 completing BPHS Ch.9: (17) Malefics in lagna+7th (2 cumulative) + Moon afflicted without benefic = premature death; (18) Waning Moon in lagna + malefics in 2-3 of the 5 kendra/8th houses = early death (no benefic mitigation mentioned); (19) Moon in Papakartari in 1st/7th/8th/12th = early death; (20) Moon in lagna with Papakartari + malefic in 7th or 8th = danger to child AND mother; (21) Saturn+Sun+Mars in 8/9/12 (any permutation, not respectively) + no benefic aspect = problem; (22) Waning Moon in Vilagna (special longevity lagnas) + malefic in 7th + malefic in lagna Drekkana = problem; (23) ALL planets in Apoklimas (3/6/9/12) + weak = very low longevity. Apoklimas explanation: results come with most difficulty because Apoklimas are quadrants from 9th house = "past-life account already withdrawn." Kendras = middle difficulty (quadrants from lagna = present). Panaparas = easiest (quadrants from 2nd house = future account to be accessed). (24) 3 malefics aspecting Moon without benefic relief = danger to MOTHER. (25) Father dies during pregnancy + Rahu/Mercury/Venus/Sun/Saturn in 2nd house = mother also dies. (26) Moon conjoined malefic + malefic in 6th or 7th from Moon + strong malefic aspects = inauspicious for mother. (27) Sun in 7th in exaltation or debilitation = deprived of mother's milk; separation from mother. (28) Malefic in 4th from Moon in inimical sign + no benefics in kendras from Moon = mother dies. (29) Malefics in 6th+12th = fear for mother; malefics in 4th+10th = fear for father. (30) Malefics in 1st+7th+12th + benefic/Mercury in 2nd = family decay. Viprit Rajayoga: works regardless of planet dignity; exalted planet = MOST dramatic reversal (extreme struggle then extreme triumph); only condition that breaks VRY = other planets joining the dusthana lord (it must be alone).
"Apoklimas are the worst houses for planets to be in. The results require the most effort to manifest — like a bank account that has been heavily withdrawn on in past lives. Kendras are middle; Panaparas come most easily."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS Chapter 9 — Balarishta Verses 17–30 (Continuation)
Verse 17 — Malefics in Lagna + 7th + Moon Afflicted
Combination:
- Lagna and 7th house cumulatively contain 2 malefics (either both in same house or 1 in each)
- Moon is also conjoined by malefic
- Moon is unaspected by any benefic
Effect: Very quick/premature death.
PVNR grammar note: "Papau" (dual case) = exactly 2 malefics. He is specifically using the Sanskrit dual, suggesting 2, not "many." The ambiguity is whether both are in the same house or distributed — probably 1 in lagna + 1 in 7th + Moon also afflicted.
Verse 18 — Waning Moon in Lagna + Malefics in Kendras/8th
Combination:
- Waning Moon in lagna (Moon is in ascendant and is Krishna Paksha = decreasing)
- Malefics occupy the quadrants and 8th house (some of them — at least 2-3 out of those 5 houses)
Effect: Early death; "there is no doubt about it."
Key clarification on waning Moon: If Moon is in lagna and is waning, it means Sun is 0-180° ahead of Moon (measuring Moon to Sun). This implies Sun is in the 1st-7th half of the zodiac from Moon's position.
Why quadrants matter: Quadrants (1,4,7,10) support existence — they are what "hold you up." 8th house is longevity itself. If malefics occupy these, the fundamental support structure is undermined.
PVNR note: He does NOT say "if benefics also aspect, there is relief" here — so benefic aspect does not mitigate this particular combination.
Verse 19 — Moon with Papakartari in 1st/7th/8th/12th
Combination:
- Moon hemmed by malefics on both sides (Papakartari yoga)
- Moon is in lagna, 7th, 8th, or 12th house
Effect: Early death ("aciranmrityum" = very quick death).
Why these houses specifically:
- Lagna and 7th: These are the "sattripitha" — the two fundamental definitions of your essence; lagna = your inner being, 7th = how you interact with the world. Moon here = Moon defines personality strongly; affliction = weak personality/pranas
- 8th house: Already Marana Karaka Sthana for Moon; hemmed by malefics compounds it
- 12th house: House of letting go/compromise; Moon (= pranas, life force) in 12th = compromise of life force; hemmed by malefics exacerbates
Important note: Moon afflicted in other houses (e.g., 10th) with Papakartari is also bad, but not necessarily life-threatening — just gives problems in that area's significations.
Verse 20 — Moon in Lagna with Papakartari + Malefic in 7th or 8th
Combination:
- Moon in lagna with Papakartari yoga
- Additionally, 7th OR 8th house has a malefic
Effect: "The child and the mother both die" — danger to both simultaneously.
PVNR's explanation for mother: The planets in 7th or 8th from lagna have Argala on the 4th house (= 4th house is the mother's house). Additionally, malefics in Maraka sthanas from Moon are bad for mother. "If Moon has serious afflictions, especially Maraka sthanas from Moon are badly afflicted, problem to mother is also possible."
Verse 21 — Saturn/Sun/Mars in 8th, 9th, or 12th Without Benefic Aspect
Combination:
- Saturn, Sun, and Mars in 8th, 9th, and 12th houses (in any permutation — not necessarily Saturn=12th, Sun=9th, Mars=8th)
- No benefic aspect on these planets
Effect: Death / serious problem.
Note: Parashara does not say "respectively" (kramat), so these 3 planets distributed among those 3 houses in any combination is sufficient.
Verse 22 — Malefic in 7th or in Lagna's Decanate + Waning Moon in Lagna
Combination:
- Waning Moon in the ascendant ("Vilagna" — possibly includes Hora Lagna and Pranapada Lagna as important longevity lagnas)
- 7th house has malefic AND the Drekkana of lagna contains a malefic
PVNR on "Vilagna": The word choice is deliberate — may mean the specific "special lagnas" for longevity: Lagna, Hora Lagna, Pranapada Lagna. If one of these lagnas has waning Moon + the other conditions apply, it is even more serious.
Effect: Death/serious problem.
Verse 23 — All Planets in Apoklimas + Weak
Combination:
- All planets are in apoklima houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th)
- All planets are also weak (no power)
Effect: Very low longevity — "2 months or 6 months" cited as examples (not absolute; just means short).
Full explanation of Apoklimas:
| Class | Houses | How results come |
|---|---|---|
| Kendras (1,4,7,10) | Quadrants from 1st house (present self) | With effort (middle difficulty) |
| Panaparas (2,5,8,11) | Quadrants from 2nd house | More easily (least difficulty) |
| Apoklimas (3,6,9,12) | Quadrants from 3rd house | With most difficulty (worst) |
Why apoklimas are hardest:
- Kendras = quadrants from lagna (present existence) = active "bank account" for current life
- Panaparas = quadrants from 2nd = like a retirement account (to be accessed)
- Apoklimas = quadrants from 9th (past) = like an account already spent on past lives; results require much more effort to manifest
- "It is a bank account that has been withdrawn to a considerable extent."
Verse 24 — Moon Aspected by 3 Malefics Without Benefic Relief
Combination:
- 3 malefics aspecting Moon
- No benefic aspect on Moon
Effect: "Matunasam bhavetasya" — mother is destroyed/mother has problems. This is bad specifically for mother, not necessarily for the native's longevity.
Verse 25 — Father Dies During Pregnancy + Certain Planets in 2nd House
Combination:
- Father dies during the mother's pregnancy
- Baby is born with Rahu, Mercury, Venus, Sun, or Saturn in the 2nd house
Effect: Mother also dies (early/soon after).
PVNR note: The probability of this is significant — 5 out of 9 planets = ~5/12 probability of one of them being in 2nd house. So the limiting factor is father dying during pregnancy. When that happens, check the 2nd house.
Practical advice: Do some Mrityunjaya Homam or Vishnu puja for mother if this is seen.
Verse 26 — Moon Conjoined by Malefic + 6th/7th from Moon Has Malefic + Malefics Strongly Aspecting
Combination:
- Moon is conjoined by a malefic
- A malefic is also in the 6th or 7th from Moon (= Moon is in 7th or 8th from that malefic)
- Additionally, strong malefics are aspecting Moon
Effect: "Jato bhavati matruha" = he kills mother (i.e., proves inauspicious for mother, causes suffering or death to mother).
Verse 27 — Sun in 7th House Exalted or Debilitated
Combination:
- Sun in the 7th house in exaltation (Aries lagna = Sun exalted in 7th) OR debilitation (Libra lagna = Sun debilitated in 7th)
Effect: "Pajahino bhavedbal ajaksheera jivati" = deprived of mother's milk; lives on goat milk (= some other milk).
Real meaning: Some separation from mother or lack of motherly happiness; not necessarily literal goat milk. Could be: mother has health issues preventing breastfeeding, or separation from mother, or emotional distance.
Live example in class: Student Ramakrishna Rao confirmed he has this combination and his mother had a heart problem at his birth; she could not feed him and he was given buffalo milk.
Verse 28 — 4th from Moon Has Malefic in Inimical Sign + No Benefics in Quadrants from Moon
Combination:
- 4th house from Moon has a malefic in an inimical sign (very uncomfortable malefic)
- No benefics in any quadrant from Moon
Effect: Mother dies.
Logic: 4th from Moon = mother's house from Moon's perspective. Malefic there in bad dignity = strongly afflicting mother. No benefics in any kendra from Moon = Moon has no support.
Verse 29 — Malefics in 6th AND 12th; OR in 4th AND 10th
Combination A: Malefics in both 6th and 12th houses simultaneously Combination B: Malefics in both 4th and 10th houses simultaneously
Effects:
- Combination A (6th + 12th) = Fear/problem for mother
- Combination B (4th + 10th) = Fear/problem for father
Logic (PVNR's derivation):
- 6th and 12th from lagna = 3rd and 9th from 4th house (mother's house) = 3rd is mother's vitality; afflicting her vitality axis = problem for mother
- 4th and 10th from lagna = 8th and 4th relative from 9th house (father's house) = longevity axis for father
Student's important question: Are these combinations in Rashi chart or Valasamsara (D60)? PVNR: "If the combinations are specifically for parents, experiment with both. Get examples and test."
Verse 30 — Family Decay Combination
Combination:
- Lagna has malefic
- 12th house has malefic (forceful loss)
- 7th house has malefic
- 2nd house has a Saumya (benefic/Mercury) planet
Effect: "Parivarakshayam karah" — causes decay of the entire family; brings ill fortune to the family.
On Saumya here:
- PVNR: Probably means any benefic (contrasted with Kruora in other houses)
- Santanam's interpretation: Specifically Mercury — if Mercury is in 2nd with malefics in 1st, 7th, 12th = destroys family
- Both interpretations are valid; Mercury interpretation makes more specific sense
"Why benefic in 2nd is bad here — not entirely intuitive to me. But it is specifically in this configuration with malefics in 1,7,12."
With this verse, BPHS Ch.9 Balarishta reading ends at verse 30. "A few more verses remain for next class, then we can start house analysis — something auspicious for a change."
Viprit Rajayoga — Planet Dignity Interaction
Question from student: If the planet giving Viprit Rajayoga is strong (exalted, Moolatrikona) — does it give yoga or not?
PVNR's answer: Viprit Rajayoga works regardless of planet's dignity. Exalted, debilitated, own sign, Moolatrikona — the yoga is intact in all cases.
However, dignity affects the MAGNITUDE:
| Planet State | Effect on Viprit Rajayoga |
|---|---|
| Exalted | MOST dramatic reversal — both the struggle phase AND the triumph phase are extreme |
| Own/Moolatrikona | Strong reversal |
| Debilitated | Weaker reversal — less dramatic in both directions |
Example — 6th lord in 8th:
- Base principle: obstacles → struggle → then sudden reversal → triumph
- If 6th lord is exalted: very serious obstacles first, then very dramatic success
- If 6th lord is debilitated: weaker obstacles, weaker eventual success
- The yoga direction (struggle → reversal) is the same; only the intensity varies
Only condition that BREAKS Viprit Rajayoga: The dusthana lord must be alone in the dusthana. If other planets join it, the yoga may be compromised.
