D7 Saptamsha — Corrected Counting Rule

Correction from Previous Lesson

The rule came up while counting this native's children in D7. PVNR stopped to correct what he had taught earlier.

"The counting forward or backward is not based on whether Rahu or Ketu are in lagna. It is based on whether Rahu or Ketu are in the seventh house."

Why the 7th house?

• The 7th house always shows the first marriage.
• The 5th house is the 11th from the 7th: the gain from the first marriage. The first child of the first marriage is that gain.
• So "count 5 houses from lagna" is the same count as "11 houses from the 7th".
• A node sitting in the house of the marriage sits at the starting point of the count. It reverses the direction.

For the first marriage the old rule and the new rule give the same answer, because a node in lagna puts the other node in the 7th. The difference shows up in a second marriage (Part 2).

Exception: Jupiter or Saturn with Ketu in 7th

A strong Jupiter or Saturn with Ketu in the 7th can keep the count normal.

• Jupiter may dominate Ketu and suppress his instinct to go in reverse. He makes Ketu "more traditional, more conservative, more standard-based, instead of being a rebel".
• Saturn is even more conservative than Jupiter. Jupiter applies intelligence, so a deviation is sometimes fine with him. Saturn's attitude: this is what has been done for trillions of years, do not change it all of a sudden.

Children from Second Marriage

PVNR used the example chart's D7 as a hypothetical — "this person may have only one husband".

• First find the house that shows the marriage the child comes from. The 7th shows the first marriage. The 2nd shows the second marriage (8th from the 7th).
• Children of that marriage are the gains from that house: count 11 houses from it. For the second marriage that lands on the 12th house from lagna.
• Direction depends on whether that marriage house is odd or even, and reverses if a node is there.

Worked on the example D7 (lagna Gemini):

• Second marriage = 2nd house = Cancer, an even sign → count backward.
• "But if Ketu was there, you would have counted forward." The 11th from Cancer is Taurus: the first child of the second marriage would come from Taurus, the next from Cancer.

"First you have to determine the house that shows this particular marriage from which the child is resulting."

Odd Sign / Even Sign Sex Determination — Full List

Basic rule (as stated in class): the lord of the child's sign in an odd sign = boy; in an even sign = girl.

Exceptions (from the earlier lesson and Book2 — this stretch of the recording is lost):

• Cancer (even) → boy
• Pisces (even) → boy
• Aquarius (odd) → girl
• Gemini (odd) → girl

PVNR's caution in this class: past experience does not show that finding the sex this way is very reliable. Do not accept or reject a Saptamsha lagna on the sex of a child alone. Look at the daśā as well.

Harsha, Tarala, Vimala Yogas

• Memory aid: H, T, V — Harsha, Tarala, Vimala for the 6th, 8th and 12th.
• The yogas came up because Venus in the example Navamsa (Sagittarius lagna) is the 6th lord in the 6th house: Harsha Yoga.
• Harsha is the yoga of cheerfulness. Read in the marriage chart: any planet in the 6th can give a break in marriage, but under Harsha Yoga the change happens complacently, without pain.

"Because he is giving Harsha Yoga, the yoga of cheerfulness, any end that happens in marriage or any change that happens in marriage will be very complacent — it will happen happily."

Satabdika Dasha — When Applicable

• Śatābdika daśā applies when the Navamsa lagna is vargottama — the same sign as the Rashi lagna.
• It depends on the Navamsa lagna being right. If the Navamsa lagna is off by one sign, the daśā no longer applies. Then Vimshottari is the daśā to use.
• In this chart the Rashi lagna is Sagittarius. The recorded time gives Scorpio Navamsa lagna; the rectified time gives Sagittarius, which is vargottama. So Śatābdika applies.
• Śatābdika periods used in class: Jupiter mahādaśā (marriage and both children), Mars mahādaśā (to 2005), Saturn mahādaśā (from 2005).
