Saturn in D20 (Vimshamsha) and Spiritual Personality

A student's Vimshamsha has Gemini lagna with Saturn in it.

• Saturn in lagna is in Marana Karaka Sthana. That is bad in every divisional chart, and the result must be counted.
• But a planet in lagna also colours the personality.

"A Saturnine personality for spiritual pursuit is not at all a bad thing."

• Saturn in the lagna of the Hora chart is not the same thing as Saturn in the lagna of Vimshamsha. Weigh the nature of the planet against the nature of the divisional chart.
• In the same chart Rahu and Ketu are in the 8th. Aquarius is the 9th, so one 9th lord (Rahu) is in the 8th and the other (Saturn) is in lagna. "Both are good as far as Vimshamsha is concerned."

Deity Identification from D20 5th House

The same Vimshamsha: Gemini lagna; Saturn in lagna; Venus, the 5th lord, in Scorpio in the 6th — Marana Karaka Sthana for Venus; Sun, Mercury and Mars in Aries in the 11th. The native is devoted to Sri Rama. Why, when the 5th lord is Venus?

• The 5th lord is weak, so he cannot give his results. Otherwise Venus would have shown strong bhakti of his own kind — Shiva or Lakshmi.
• When the 5th lord is that weak, look for who is in the 5th house or aspecting it.
• Sun and Mercury in Aries aspect the 5th house, Libra, with their 7th-house graha drishti. Sun with Mercury gives Vishnu, and Rama.
• In the Rasi chart Mercury and Sun are in the 5th house. That contributes, but it is not the deciding factor.

"Because Venus is so weak, you are looking for who are there in the 5th house or who are aspecting the 5th house. That is how Vishnu and Rama came into the scene."

"In the Vimshamsha, 5th house being aspected by Sun and Mercury is the trump card."

Example chart

Event: a bone fracture on the morning of April 6, 2006. The native says the last three years, since moving house, have been difficult and the last year very bad, and asks which homam to do.

Rasi: Saturn (7th lord) in lagna. Sun (lagna lord), Mars (yogakaraka) and Mercury (2nd lord, a maraka) together in the 10th in Taurus. Ketu in the 2nd in Virgo. Mercury in Taurus and Venus in Gemini exchange signs.

Dasha: the 7th lord is in lagna, so Dwisaptati Sama dasha applies. In it the native is running Sun dasha; Rahu's is over. The fracture came in Sun–Mercury.

Sun in the Divisional Charts

The Sun is the lagna lord. His agenda is good health and recovery. Can he protect?

• The Sun is the karaka of bones — when afflicted. "Not always. When Sun is afflicted, he can give bone problems."
• The lagna lord should be strong in Navamsa. Here he is beaten down in three charts and cannot protect enough. Still, being lagna lord, he sees to it that things are not fatal and there is recovery.
• "Never ignore the Navamsa chart."

"Especially in Trimshamsa, whatever sign or planet Rahu and Ketu afflict, problems relating to that are possible."

In the Trimshamsa the nodes are in Scorpio, so fiery problems are possible; they are with the Sun, so bone problems.

Which Antardasha

The Sun has the ability to trouble. The antardasha can be the Sun's own or that of one of the troublemakers: Rahu and Ketu (from D9, D6, D30) or Mercury, the maraka joined with the Sun in Rasi.

Ketu has no dasha in Dwisaptati Sama. In both Rasi and Navamsa Ketu is in Mercury's sign.

"Because he doesn't have a dasha, his dispositor can end up giving the result. So that way also, Mercury is basically carrying Ketu's agenda."

Why Mercury fits:

• Rasi: Mercury is the 2nd lord from lagna and from the Sun — a maraka both ways.
• Rasi, counted from the dasha lord Sun: the 2nd lord Mercury and the 7th lord Mars are with him, and Ketu is the other 7th lord. Mars, Mercury and Ketu are the problem planets. Venus in the 2nd from the Sun is no maraka, being that lagna's lord.
• Trimshamsa: Mercury is the 8th lord in the 2nd house, a maraka sthana, and is the 8th lord from the Sun also.
• Shashthamsa: Mercury is in the badhaka sthana from lagna, and from the Sun he is the badhaka and maraka lord.
• Ketu shows the trouble in every divisional chart and sits in the 2nd, a maraka sthana, in Rasi. Mercury delivers it.

A student asks whether, with Sun, Mars and Mercury together and a Mercury–Venus exchange, Mercury should give some other planet's results. The teacher: once Mercury is taken as giving Ketu's results, there is no need to work through the exchange. "If you are using the Rasi chart, it becomes really, really complicated."

Vimshottari also works: Saturn–Saturn, probably Saturn–Saturn–Mercury.

The A6 link, in the Shashthamsa: A6 is in Aquarius. Its lords are Saturn and Rahu. Saturn is in the Shashthamsa lagna; Rahu is with the Sun, and the Sun has argala on A6.

• Dwisaptati Sama: Sun dasha — the planet with argala on A6 and joined with a lord of A6.
• Vimshottari: Saturn–Saturn — a lord of A6 in lagna.
• A student suggests Saturn in lagna protects it. The teacher: no. The lagna lord in A6 may give a small accident and keep the person from harm. "But A6 lord in lagna is not at all good."

The native adds that Saturn was transiting the 8th from his Moon at the time (ashtama Shani).

Sun–Rahu, 2010–11: Rahu is with the Sun in the Shashthamsa. "Sun–Rahu is a very, very dangerous period." The teacher makes no prediction, but says to be very careful and to do a Mrityunjaya homam when the period is about to begin, around April 2010.

The Tithi Pravesha Chart of 2005–06

The event changed the native's life for months, so the annual chart must show it.

The chart: Taurus lagna. Sun, Venus and Mercury in lagna. Moon in the 8th in Sagittarius. Jupiter and Ketu in Virgo. Hora lord (ruler of the year): Saturn.

Tithi Ashtottari gives the Sun's period on April 6, 2006. Does the Sun show a broken bone?

• Rasi: the Sun combusts the lagna lord Venus. But Venus is at 25° and the Sun at 10°. "Is it such a big deal? It's not such a big deal."
• Shashthamsa: the Sun is the 11th lord and badhaka lord in the 3rd, with rasi drishti from Rahu and Ketu. Not terrible.
• Trimshamsa: the Sun is the 4th lord in the 5th. "So what?"

A student wonders whether the birth time is wrong. The teacher: do not jump to that because one annual chart does not explain an event. Maybe the dasha is wrong.

Shashtihayani dasha: the Sun is in the Tithi Pravesha lagna, which is the condition for Shashtihayani dasha — a conditional nakshatra dasha, used here exactly as in a natal chart. It gives the Moon's period at the fracture.

• Rasi: the Moon is in the 8th, his Marana Karaka Sthana, and A6 is there with him. "Moon in 8th is terrible."
• Navamsa: the Moon is the 6th lord in the 6th. In the chart of protection he shows vulnerability. Had he been in the 9th of Navamsa he would have protected.
• Shashthamsa: the Moon is in the 9th. A malefic of the Rasi chart placed in the house of protection does not protect. He has no link with A6 there, which puzzles the teacher. But the 6th house itself is very heavy — the lagna lord Venus is in it, in Marana Karaka Sthana, with Rahu and Ketu, and Saturn, the ruler of the year and karaka of suffering, aspects them — and the Moon has argala on that house.
• Trimshamsa: the Moon is in the 8th again, in Marana Karaka Sthana, and in an akasha-tattva sign. Affliction in akasha is the worst kind: akasha is the space that holds the other elements.

The site's Tithi Pravesha chart has Saturn at 0°01' Cancer, on the sign border; its Shashthamsa puts Saturn in the lagna, where he does not aspect the 6th house.

The antardasha comes out as Moon–Sun. The teacher's guess is that it was Moon–Jupiter, a day's error in the calculation being possible: Jupiter is the 8th lord in Rasi and in Trimshamsa, and in Rasi he is with Ketu, the 7th lord — "a terrible maraka combination".

Conclusion:

"Tithi Ashtottari is very reliable. But you may run into an odd case where you are not happy. Don't just justify and somehow come up with a logic. If you are not happy, look elsewhere."

• When a conditional nakshatra dasha applies to an annual chart, Tithi Ashtottari may not work perfectly. The teacher has seen several cases where Dwisaptati Sama, Shatabdika or another conditional dasha, chosen by the same criteria as in a natal chart, did better. He does not know the exact rule.
• Here Tithi Ashtottari makes "very, very little sense. I couldn't have predicted." With Shashtihayani he could have said: be very careful in the Moon's period.
• It was not a vehicle accident, so the Shodashamsa is not examined. Had the native come beforehand, the teacher would have told him to be careful while driving, and to pray to Gauri or Krishna, the Moon being the problem.

Remedies Prescribed

• Mahaganapati homam — the Sun is afflicted by Ketu in the divisional charts. For Ketu, Ganesha is best.
• Mahamrityunjaya homam — the Sun is Shiva; strengthening the Sun helps.
• A Sudarshana homam is not needed: that is for Mercury, and the main problem is Ketu and the Sun.

The Wife's Fears — Read from the Native's Chart

The native says his wife has unexplained fears.

• The teacher marks the pada of the 7th in Gemini and reads from Gemini as her lagna. (The name of the pada is unclear on the recording. Gemini is the Navamsa lagna of this chart, and the placements below are those of the Navamsa counted from Gemini.)
• The dasha used is still the native's Dwisaptati Sama — now Sun dasha. A student asks why. The teacher: once a conditional dasha applies in the native's chart, use it for everyone read from that chart — father, mother, wife. Do not test the condition again from their lagna.
• The Sun is the 3rd lord. The 3rd is the 12th from the 4th: his agenda is to deplete sukha (sukha-lopa).
• He sits in the 4th, the house of sukha, and is eclipsed by Ketu.
• Ketu is the 6th lord and shows problems that cannot be diagnosed.
• So in this period the wife's happiness, comfort and peace are very unlikely.
