Arudha Padas — Satya vs Maya
The fifth pillar of chart analysis: Arudha Padas. The house = hidden truth (Satya); the lord = the mirror; the Arudha = the image in the mirror (Maya). Why Arudha cannot fall on the Satya axis. Three levels of any house. Applied to PVNR's D10, Aishwarya Rai's Rasi (3H/6H from AL), and Swami Vivekananda's Rasi.
"We are living in the world of Maya. This whole world is Maya. So actually Maya is a more important thing than Satya for practical purposes. Don't think that Maya is less important — but the bottom line is, it is Maya."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
The Fifth Pillar: Arudha Padas
The four pillars already covered:
- Rasis (signs)
- Grahas (planets)
- Bhavas (houses)
- Varga Chakras (divisional charts)
Arudhas (A-padas) are the fifth critical concept. They reveal the perceptible, tangible manifestations of what the houses contain.
Core Philosophy — Satya vs Maya
The Fundamental Distinction
Take the 5th house (abilities, intelligence). What does "intelligence" mean?
— PVNR"When you talk about somebody's abilities, it's an abstract concept. It doesn't manifest in a way you can perceive. Even I can't perceive what my own abilities are. Those are hidden within me."
What people see are the trappings of intelligence: marks in examinations, ranks in college entrance tests, awards, trophies, gold medals. You say "he got 90/100 — he's intelligent." You say "he won the Wimbledon trophy — he's an excellent tennis player." But do those marks accurately reflect the real intelligence? Not necessarily.
— PVNRReal intelligence (5H from Lagna) = Satya (Truth) — hidden, abstract, inanimate within the person Marks, awards, scores, recognitions (A5) = Maya (Illusion/Manifestation) — visible, tangible, what the world sees
Critical point: Do NOT think Maya is less important:
— PVNR"We are living in the world of Maya. This whole world is Maya. So actually Maya is a more important thing than Satya for practical purposes. Don't think that Maya is less important — but the bottom line is, it is Maya."
More Examples of House vs Arudha
| House | What it Shows (Satya) | Arudha | What it Shows (Maya) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4H in D-16 | Vahana Sukha — your inner happiness/comfort with vehicles | A4 | The actual car/vehicle you possess — visible to the world |
| 5H in D-24 | Real intelligence, inner learning ability | A5 | Marks, ranks, awards, trophies — how the world judges your learning |
| 10H in D-10 | The karma being done (abstract activity) | A10 | The actual job title, position, offer letter, name tag |
| 1H (Lagna) | Your true self — personality, inner nature | AL | Your image — how people perceive you |
— PVNRPVNR: "If you take a software engineer, physically he may just be typing. The physical karma (Rasi chart) is just typing. But the career (D-10 10H) is the abstract activity he performs. And the job title 'Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft' — that is the Arudha. It has an offer letter, a name tag. You can see it. The activity is abstract. The job title is real."
The Mirror Analogy
The relationship between house, lord, and Arudha is best understood as:
| Element | Analogy | Represents |
|---|---|---|
| House | The object | The hidden truth — abstract, inanimate, within the person |
| Lord of house | The mirror | Consciousness that processes and reflects the house's potential into activity |
| Arudha | The image in the mirror | What rises materially — the tangible, perceivable manifestation |
— PVNR"The way you find the image is: see where the person is, see the distance to the mirror. At the same distance from the mirror on the other side, is the image."
Arudha Calculation Formula:
- Identify the house
- Find where the lord of that house is (count forward: N houses from house to lord)
- Count the same N houses from the lord
- That landing sign is the Arudha
Example (PVNR demonstrates for 1H/AL):
- Lagna = Cancer (4th sign)
- Lord of Cancer = Moon
- Moon is in the 11th house from lagna
- Count 11 from Moon: arrives in Aries (Mesha)
- AL = Aries
Arudha Notation
| Symbol | House | Special Name(s) |
|---|---|---|
| AL | Arudha of 1H (Lagna) | Arudha Lagna — image/perceived self |
| A2 | Arudha of 2H | Dhanada — perceived wealth |
| A3 | Arudha of 3H | Bhratrupada, Vikramapada, Parakramapada |
| A4 | Arudha of 4H | Vahana (vehicle), Matrupada |
| A5 | Arudha of 5H | Keerti Pada, Yasya Pada, Mantra Pada |
| A6 | Arudha of 6H | Shatrupada (enemies/obstacles) |
| A7 | Arudha of 7H | Darapada (spouse/partner) |
| A8 | Arudha of 8H | |
| A9 | Arudha of 9H | Pitrupada (father) |
| A10 | Arudha of 10H | Rajapada, Karma Arudha |
| A11 | Arudha of 11H | Labhada (gains) |
| UL | Arudha of 12H | Upapada Lagna |
A5 has multiple names because 5H shows multiple things: abilities (Keerti/Yasya = fame), children (Putrapada), mantras (Mantra Pada). Parashara gives a different name for each meaning of the same house: "He does not stick to one word. If the 5th house shows children, he calls it Putra Pada; if abilities, Yasya Pada; if mantras, Mantra Pada."
The Exception: Arudha Cannot Fall in the Satya Axis
Rule: If the computed Arudha falls in:
- The same house being computed
- The 7H from that house
...then the computed position is invalid and you take the 10th house from that invalid position as the actual Arudha.
Why?
The 1H-7H axis is the Satya (truth) axis for any house:
- 1H = Brahma Sthana — the god of creation rules here; this is the house of existence and creation
- 7H = Shiva Sthana — the god of desire and marriage rules here; house of desire and relationships
- Narayana lives in whichever is stronger (1H or 7H). Both 1H and 7H must always be examined for any house's full analysis.
— PVNR"Maya and Satya are never the same place. That is the basic principle of this creation. The Arudha is Maya. It cannot occupy the same place as the Satya."
Analogy: "If I am standing exactly in front of the mirror, somebody behind me cannot see my reflection — I am blocking it. The image cannot form where the real object stands."
Example (UL = Arudha of 12H):
- 12H = Cancer; lord = Moon
- Moon is in the 10H from Cancer (10th place from Cancer)
- Count 10 from Moon → lands in Cancer's 7H
- Exception applies → 7H from the original house
- Take the 10th from that position → UL lands in Aries
Example (A10 = Karma Arudha):
- 10H = Taurus; lord = Venus in Taurus (lord in own house)
- Count from Taurus to Venus: 1st house (same house)
- Count 1 from Venus → lands in Taurus again = same house
- Exception applies → Take 10th from Taurus → A10 = Aquarius (Kumbha)
Three Aspects of Any House Matter
PVNR introduces the three-layer analysis for any house topic:
| Layer | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| House from Lagna | The real, abstract, hidden truth — what you actually ARE regarding that matter |
| Arudha of that house | The tangible, material manifestation — what the world SEES about you in that matter |
| That house from Arudha Lagna | What people IMAGINE/perceive in their minds about you regarding that matter |
Example: Career (10H in D-10)
| Meaning | |
|---|---|
| 10H from Lagna in D-10 | Your actual karma — abstract, real (software engineer who writes intelligent algorithms) |
| A10 (Karma Arudha) | Your tangible job title/position ("Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft") |
| 10H from AL in D-10 | The image of your work in people's minds ("he does dirty work" if janitor; "he's a great scholar" if professor) |
— PVNR"If somebody is a janitor, he may be internally happy (Moon in 10H from lagna), but people's image of him (10H from AL) has Saturn — they think he is doing a dirty, lowly job. And the actual position (A10) confirms that. So all three tell different things."
Chart Example 1 — PVNR's Own D-10
Birth data: April 4, 1970 | 5:47:13 PM IST | 81°E8′, 16°N10′ (Machilipatnam, India)
D-10 Lagna: Virgo (Kanya)
True self in karma (Lagna): Mercury/Kanya → overtly analytical, chaste, pure. Hidden, not perceivable by others.
AL (Arudha Lagna): With Jupiter+Ketu:
— PVNR"Jupiter and Ketu in AL means people perceive me as a very principled, respectful, somewhat detached person. Maybe even spiritual or religious. Even if I don't speak about religion at my workplace, that is the image that is projected."
Parivartana: Mercury-Venus Exchange
9L (Venus) in 10H ↔ 10L (Mercury) in 9H = Parivartana. Practically: Mercury acts in 10H, Venus acts in 9H.
- Mercury in 10H → software/analytical engineer (not Venus-like entertainer)
- This explains the career: Mercurian software engineering, mathematical algorithms
Second AL via parivartana: Take Mercury as if placed in Gemini (10H position due to parivartana). From lagna to Gemini = 10th. Take 10th from Mercury (Gemini) → arrives in Pisces. But Pisces = 7H from lagna = exception applies. Take 10th from Pisces = Sagittarius (with Mars).
Second Image (Sagittarius with Mars):
— PVNR"This is a very forceful, blunt, dharmic person. If you ask 100 people on the Vedic astrology Yahoo groups, probably 60 will say I am very harsh and forceful. That is because of Mars in Sagittarius. That is another image I project — dharmically forceful and blunt."
PVNR confirms: both images work. Some people see him as a principled scholar (Jupiter+Ketu in original AL), others see him as forceful and harsh (Mars in Sagittarius, second AL). Multiple images coexist.
A3 — Communications and Books
A3 (3H Arudha) = Pisces in D-10:
3H from Lagna shows real communication skills (hidden, abstract). A3 shows the tangible manifestations — books written, lectures given, articles, recordings.
What will be the content? See Argala on Pisces (2H, 4H, 11H from Pisces):
- Jupiter + Ketu in 11H from Pisces (have Argala) → astrological/spiritual Vedic content
- Mercury (via parivartana, in 11H from A3) → very systematic, analytical, engineering-textbook style
Permanent influences via Rasi Drishti (dual signs aspect each other):
- Mars (Sagittarius) — always in Rasi Drishti → forceful, blunt in writing/speaking; dharmic but aggressive
- Saturn (Virgo) — always in Rasi Drishti → very disciplined, laborious application of intelligence; very systematic, detailed
— PVNR"My mails will be very detailed because of Saturn in Virgo. And sometimes I say what I want to say whether people like it or not — that is Mars in Sagittarius. Those are hallmarks of my communication, always. The particular dasha will determine when books are written, but the character of those communications always carries those influences."
A10 — Job/Career Position
A10 = Karma Arudha (what tangible position PVNR occupies). Analysis not fully detailed in this class.
Mercury's Amsa: Agni → transformation, engineering (Agni = fire; "engineering" etymologically from "ignis" = fire). Confirms software engineering.
Vakri (Retrograde) Planets and Neecha Bhanga
Key Rule: Debilitated + Vakri
— PVNR"A planet in debilitation (Neecha) AND retrograde (Vakri) gives results akin to exaltation." This is called Neecha Bhanga via Vakratva.
Converse: A planet in exaltation (Uchcha) AND retrograde → gives results akin to debilitation. That is bad.
In which chart: Apply this rule to whichever Varga the planet is debilitated in. If Jupiter is debilitated in D-10 (Capricorn), apply the rule to D-10 only. Not to Rasi (where Jupiter might be fine).
Example: PVNR's D-10 has Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn AND retrograde → Neecha Bhanga from Vakratva → Jupiter gives results as if exalted.
Three Sources of Neecha Bhanga
Any ONE of these is sufficient:
| Source | Rule |
|---|---|
| 1. Vakratva | The debilitated planet itself is retrograde → Neecha Bhanga is permanent from birth |
| 2. Debilitation sign lord | The lord of the sign where the planet is debilitated is in a Kendra (1H, 4H, 7H, 10H) from Lagna OR Moon |
| 3. Exaltation sign planet | The planet that is exalted in that sign is itself in a Kendra from Lagna or Moon |
For PVNR's D-10 (Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn):
- Jupiter is Vakri → Neecha Bhanga via Vakratva (permanent)
- Saturn (lord of Capricorn) is in Kendra from lagna → also gives Neecha Bhanga
- Mars (exalted in Capricorn) is in 4H (a Kendra) → also gives Neecha Bhanga
All three operate together. But since Vakratva is there, it's permanent from birth.
Timing Neecha Bhanga from Multiple Sources
If Vakratva is absent and only sources 2 and 3 apply:
- The Neecha Bhanga given by Saturn's dasha/antardasha reflects: traditional knowledge, hard work, ability to overcome neecha through disciplined effort
- The Neecha Bhanga given by Mars's dasha/antardasha reflects: burning drive, determination, occult interest (Mars owns 3H and 8H in the example)
- If antardasha: the dasha lord must also be favorable and friendly to the Neecha Bhanga giver
Remedies for Weak Arudhas
Why fasting (not mantra)?
Arudhas are physical, material things (the car, the job title, the award). Because they are physical, the right remedy must also be physical. Physical suffering = upvasa (fasting).
— PVNR"For Arudhas, I was told that fasting is the way. On the other hand, if you want to increase the strength of a house itself (not Arudha), you can do pujas to various gods. But for Arudhas specifically: fast."
Procedure:
- Find the lord of the Arudha you want to strengthen
- Find that planet's Vara (weekday):
- Sun = Sunday; Moon = Monday; Mars = Tuesday; Mercury = Wednesday; Jupiter = Thursday; Venus = Friday; Saturn = Saturday
- Fast on that weekday (sunrise to sunset)
- At end of fast: take a bath, offer a small prayer, break fast
- Pray to the god shown by the 2H lord from the Arudha
Why 2H from Arudha?
— PVNR"As far as image is concerned, it is more concerned about the food it gets than the dharma it has. Image is very selfish. The world of Maya has different rules from the world of Satya. In Maya, food is very important because Maya wants to become fatter and fatter. So the 2nd house from Arudha — the food/resources of the image — is what sustains it."
Example: Strengthen A5 in PVNR's D-10:
- A5 = Taurus. Lord = Venus.
- Venus's Vara = Friday → fast on Fridays
- 2nd from A5 (Taurus) = Gemini. Lord = Mercury.
- God of Mercury = Vishnu/Narayana
- Prayer: fast on Friday, pray to Vishnu for career recognition
3rd and 6th from Arudha Lagna — Attitude in the World of Maya
Critical Distinction: Lagna vs AL Rules
| 6th House | |
|---|---|
| From Lagna | Overcoming obstacles — your inner perseverance |
| From AL (Arudha Lagna) | Defeating other people's images — pulling others down around you |
— PVNR"The world of Maya and the world of Satya are different. So the rules are different for lagna and Arudha lagna. From Arudha lagna, the 6th house is simply defeating other people around you, and the 3rd house is having the courage to go and defeat them."
The 3H-6H Matrix from AL
| 3H from AL | 6H from AL | Person's Attitude/Image |
|---|---|---|
| Malefic | Malefic | High initiative + completes the task of defeating others — aggressive achiever |
| Malefic | Benefic | Starts fights bravely but cannot finish them — all talk, no action in conflict |
| Benefic | Malefic | Not much initiative/bravery, but once started (for any reason), will finish it ruthlessly |
| Benefic | Benefic | No initiative, no execution — saintly, withdrawing person |
Neecha (debilitated) malefic in 6H from AL: A malefic in neecha behaves like a benefic. So: person starts a fight but then gives up halfway — "not worth it, I'll just walk away." (Exception: Mars does not follow this rule.)
Example: Aishwarya Rai (Rasi Chart)
Lagna: Virgo. Mercury (LL) in 3H (Scorpio).
AL: Computed from Moon via Sun being in 11H from lagna → Capricorn
From AL (Capricorn):
- 3H from AL = Pisces — empty (no planets)
- 6H from AL = Gemini — Saturn + Ketu (two strong malefics)
Reading:
- 3H empty → not overly bold or aggressive in initiating fights — does not go to battle without reason
- 6H with Saturn+Ketu → once she feels inimical, she will destroy that person ruthlessly
— PVNR"She is not a saintly person. Even if she acts saintly, you know from this chart she is not. She will pull down anyone who becomes her enemy. She can do anything to eliminate that person."
Image: A materialistic achiever who appears graceful but can be ruthless when threatened.
Example: Swami Vivekananda (Rasi Chart)
Lagna: Sagittarius. Jupiter in 11H.
AL: From Jupiter in 11H → take 11 from Jupiter → Leo
From AL (Leo):
- 3H from AL = Libra — Jupiter (benefic)
- 6H from AL = Capricorn — Venus + Mercury (both benefics)
Reading:
- 3H with Jupiter → very wise, will not go bravely to destroy somebody else's image
- 6H with Venus+Mercury → when a fight comes, will withdraw peacefully — no execution
— PVNR"As far as any fight with anybody is concerned, he will simply withdraw. He will not destroy. This is a perfectly saintly image — exactly what we know of Swami Vivekananda."
PVNR's Own AL Analysis
AL in Scorpio (based on lagna lord Mercury in 9H → takes 9 from Mercury → Scorpio):
- 3H from AL = Capricorn — empty (no planets; not overly aggressive in starting fights)
- 6H from AL = Aries — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn (2 benefics + 2 malefics)
Reading:
- Mars (unafflicted malefic in 6H): "When someone comes in my way, I just destroy them. Ruthless."
- Mercury+Venus (benefics in 6H): "They make me soft-natured and make me withdraw."
- Saturn (in neecha in 6H from AL): "I start the fight but give up. I become a saint after being an evil person — walk away, not worth it."
— PVNR"So 50-50: half the time withdrawing nicely, half the time ruthlessly destroying whoever is in the way. And when Saturn dominates — I start, then I just give up and walk away as if nothing happened."
Further Rules for Arudhas
A3 and Weapons (in a Warrior's Context)
- 3H from Lagna = real bravery (abstract, hidden)
- A3 = weapons — the instruments people use to judge your bravery; what the world can see
- 3rd from A3 = how brave people perceive you to be (the perception of your parakrama)
— PVNR"If a warrior has a big sword and goes to battle, people will think he is very brave because of the sword. If he has only a small knife, people will have less fear. The weapon (A3) determines how people judge the bravery (3rd from A3)."
A6 — Enemies (Shatrupada)
If the planet of interest is in 12H from A6 → giving up/abandoning enemies → less opposition in that matter. In D-24: less opposition in examinations.
Moon as Karaka for Arudhas
- Sun governs the Maha Dasa level (most stable, representing Satya)
- Moon governs the Antardasha level and is the Karaka for Arudhas
- Why? Moon = Parvati = Devi = the goddess who stands for Maya. "Moon represents Maya, and Arudhas are Maya."
