Tribhagi Vimshottari Dasha — Introduction

Status, in PVNR's words: a dasha "mentioned in tradition", that "we know how to compute", with "some hints on how to use it", but "not fully very well understood." He teaches it so that a student may take it further. This class covers only the computation.

The Gap in Normal Vimshottari

• 27 nakshatras, 9 planets. Each planet rules 3 nakshatras in a trine, 120° apart: Ketu has Ashwini, Magha, Mula; Venus has Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purvashadha.
• Born in Ashwini: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 = 120 years, the full span of life in Kali Yuga.
• If that first Ketu dasha stood for Ashwini alone, the 120 years would end with Ashlesha and only 120° of the zodiac would ever give a dasha. That makes little sense. So people say the Ketu dasha stands for Ashwini, Magha and Mula together: each dasha is shared between 3 nakshatras.

Tribhagi

• Tri = three, bhaga = part, bhagi = having parts. A Vimshottari dasha in three parts.
• 27 dashas, one for each nakshatra, starting from Moon's nakshatra and going through the nakshatras in order.
• Moon in Ashwini: Ketu (Ashwini), Venus (Bharani), Sun (Krittika) … Mercury (Ashlesha). Then Ketu again, now for Magha; Venus for Purva Phalguni; Sun for Uttara Phalguni … Mercury for Jyeshtha. Then Ketu a third time, for Mula — "not the same Ketu dasha as earlier."
• At full length that would be 360 years. So each round of 9 dashas is compressed from 120 years to 40, and each dasha is one third of its normal length.

(The class works out Ketu and Venus and says "and so on"; the rest is the same division by 3.)

A Student's Objection

• Why not finish Ketu first — Ashwini, Magha, Mula — and only then go to Bharani?
• Then the dates would be the same as normal Vimshottari and you would be jumping all over the zodiac. Tribhagi goes cyclically through the nakshatras in order. "This is a zodiac-based dasha."
• PVNR does not reject the other scheme: "That may also be valid. I do not know much about that … This is what is talked about in tradition."

How Tribhagi Vimshottari Is Read

• In JH software: Dasas → Vimshottari → select the Tribhagi variation.
• Read it in addition to normal Vimshottari, for confirmation.
• It touches the whole zodiac. Use it primarily in the rasi chart, secondarily in the navamsa. It is very physical and mundane.
• Take the dasha and its nakshatra from the software and see where that nakshatra lies in the chart: which house or houses.
• A dasha covers 13°20′. Spread the dasha's length over that arc and every date gives a point in the zodiac. This is the progressed Moon.
• A nakshatra has 4 padas, so a quarter of the dasha goes to each pada. A nakshatra that crosses a sign boundary gives the results of two houses, one after the other.
• See which sahamas and special lagnas the progressed Moon comes into contact with. They show the events that can be triggered.
• Progressed Moon in the 8th house: turbulence. In the 9th house: protection.
• The nature of the nakshatra's deity tells what is driving life in that dasha.

Chart: 4 April 1970, 5:47:13 PM IST, 16°10′N 81°08′E. Virgo lagna. Moon with Rahu in Aquarius in the 6th, in Purva Bhadrapada. Sun in Pisces in the 7th. Venus, Saturn, Mercury and Mars in Aries in the 8th. Ghati Lagna in Virgo.

Moon is in Purva Bhadrapada, so the Tribhagi dashas start with Jupiter (Purva Bhadrapada), Saturn (Uttara Bhadrapada), Mercury (Revati) and then go on from Ashwini.

Sun Dasha — Krittika — March 1993 to March 1995

• Sun is in the 7th house. His dasha here is the dasha of Krittika.
• Krittika's 1st pada is in Aries, the 8th house. Padas 2, 3 and 4 are in Taurus, the 9th house.
• Divide the 2 years into 4 parts of 6 months. The first 6 months give 8th-house results.
• Then the progressed Moon changes house, from the 8th to the 9th. Dharmic life becomes possible.

Rahu Dasha — Ardra — November 2000 to November 2006

• The dasha running when the class was held.
• Gemini holds Mrigashira padas 3–4, Ardra, and Punarvasu padas 1–3. Ardra runs from 6°40′ to 20° Gemini, so it lies entirely in the 10th house.
• Rahu is in the 6th house: a lot of obstacles, and focus on work (A10). The mind is under Rahu's influence.
• Ardra is ruled by Rudra, a form of Shiva, who symbolises the fire in the world. For peace of mind pray to Rudra: Rudrabhishekam and Rudra Chamakam.
• So from the nature of the nakshatra one can judge what is triggering life in that dasha.
• The next dasha is Punarvasu, ruled by Aditi. It is very good.

Sahamas

• Roga sahama falls at the end of Revati. It was triggered in 1983–84, at the end of the Mercury (Revati) dasha.
• Yasas sahama activated by the progressed Moon: some recognition is possible.

Ghati Lagna — 2033

• GL shows power. Here it is in Uttara Phalguni, 2nd pada.
• The progressed Moon reaches it in 2033, in the Sun (Uttara Phalguni) dasha of the second round.
• Normal Vimshottari at that time: Venus dasha, Saturn antardasha. Venus and Saturn are the 9th and 5th lords and are conjoined in the chart.
• The class notes add that the Taurus Narayana dasha runs then, and that Narayana dasha also shows the image.
• A strong 6th house shows vanquishing the enemy. The class notes say the Tithi Pravesha chart confirms it.

Sahamas and Special Lagnas under the Progressed Moon

• Sri Lagna (SL) stands for Lakshmi's blessing and shows an important part of life. The progressed Moon on SL, in the 7th from it, or aspecting it can trigger it.
• Ghati Lagna (GL) shows power. The trines and the 7th from GL can also show recognition.
• The same sahama can come in different flavours at different times.
