Tribhagi Vimshottari Dasha — Introduction, 27-Nakshatra Cycle & PVNR's Chart
Tribhagi Vimshottari: each standard dasha divided by 3, giving 27 nakshatra dashas (one per nakshatra) completing the full 360° zodiac. Each is 1/3 of the standard dasha period. Dasha order: cycles sequentially through all 27 nakshatras. Very physical and mundane. Progressed Moon analysis: 8H = turbulence; 9H = protection. Sahamas: event-based (triggered at a point) vs duration-based (ongoing while Moon in contact). Sri Lagna = Lakshmi blessing when progressed Moon contacts it. PVNR's chart example: Sun dasha (Krittika) March 1993-95 = residence change (8H→9H within dasha). Rahu dasha (Ardra) Nov 2000-Nov 2006: Rudra's fiery energy, focus on tangible work (A10). GL in Uttara Phalguni = recognition possible in 2033 (Venus MD, Saturn AD in standard Vimshottari).
"In Tribhagi, each nakshatra gets its own dedicated period. You see the nuance of which specific nakshatra is active — something you lose in standard Vimshottari where 3 nakshatras are bundled together."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Tribhagi Vimshottari Dasha — Introduction
Status: Not found in classical texts; from tradition. Not fully understood. PVNR teaches it so students can explore it.
The Logic Behind It
In standard Vimshottari:
- Each planet rules 3 nakshatras (120° apart in the zodiac)
- E.g., Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha, Mula — all 3 are bundled into one 7-year Ketu dasha
- Question: "Shouldn't each of those 3 nakshatras get its own dasha?"
In Tribhagi (Tri = 3, Bhagi = having parts):
- Each planet's dasha is divided into 3 equal parts, one for each of its 3 nakshatras
- Instead of 9 planet dashas (120 years), you have 27 nakshatra dashas going around the full zodiac
- The dashas go cyclically through all 27 nakshatras in order (no jumping)
- Each cycle = 40 years (not 120); 3 cycles × 40 years = 120 years total
Dasha Duration (each = standard ÷ 3)
| Planet | Standard | Tribhagi |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years | 2 years 4 months |
| Venus | 20 years | 6 years 8 months |
| Sun | 6 years | 2 years |
| Moon | 10 years | 3 years 4 months |
| Mars | 7 years | 2 years 4 months |
| Rahu | 18 years | 6 years |
| Jupiter | 16 years | 5 years 4 months |
| Saturn | 19 years | 6 years 4 months |
| Mercury | 17 years | 5 years 8 months |
Order of 27 Dashas (3 cycles)
- Cycle 1 (Ashwini to Ashlesha): Ketu(Ashwini), Venus(Bharani), Sun(Krittika), Moon(Rohini), Mars(Mrigashira), Rahu(Ardra), Jupiter(Punarvasu), Saturn(Pushyami), Mercury(Ashlesha)
- Cycle 2 (Magha to Jyeshtha): Ketu(Magha), Venus(Purvaphalguni), Sun(Uttaraphalguni), Moon(Hasta), Mars(Chitra), Rahu(Swati), Jupiter(Vishakha), Saturn(Anuradha), Mercury(Jyeshtha)
- Cycle 3 (Mula to Revati): Ketu(Mula), Venus(Purvashadha), Sun(Uttarashadha), Moon(Shravana), Mars(Dhanishtha), Rahu(Shatabhisha), Jupiter(Purvabhadra), Saturn(Uttarabhadra), Mercury(Revati)
How to Use
- In JH software: Dasas tab → Vimshottari → select "Tribhagi variation"
- Primarily used in Rasi chart; secondarily in Navamsa
- "Very physical and mundane" — corresponds to events in the physical world
- Each dasha = 13°20' arc of zodiac; find where that nakshatra falls in the chart
- Look at which sahamas, special lagnas, or sensitive points the progressed nakshatra activates
Progressed Moon Method
- As the Tribhagi dasha progresses, progressed Moon moves through the zodiac
- When progressed Moon contacts a sensitive point = event triggers
- Progressed Moon in 8H = turbulence
- Progressed Moon in 9H = protection
- When progressed Moon contacts Roga Sahama = health issue for that duration
- When progressed Moon contacts Sri Lagna or 7th from SL = Lakshmi's blessing triggered
PVNR's Own Chart — Tribhagi Example Analysis
(PVNR uses his own chart to demonstrate the Tribhagi system)
Sun Dasha in Tribhagi (Krittika nakshatra) — March 1993 to March 1995
- Sun placed in 7th house; Krittika nakshatra spans the boundary between 8H and 9H
- Sun dasha = comes in contact with the 8H → change of residence; moving from one place to another
- Then moves into 9H → dharmic life becomes possible
- Note: Krittika 1st pada = in Aries (8H); Krittika 2nd, 3rd, 4th padas = in Taurus (9H)
- Divide the 2-year dasha into 4 parts (6 months each) → first 6 months: 8H results; then 9H results
Rahu Dasha in Tribhagi (Ardra nakshatra) — November 2000 to November 2006
- Rahu in 6H of his chart → obstacles, focus on work; mind influenced by Rahu
- Ardra nakshatra = ruled by Rudra (Shiva's form = fire in the world)
- Ardra spans 6°40' to 20° Gemini = entirely in 10H (depending on chart)
- Remedy: Do Rudrabhisheka and Rudra Chamakam for peace of mind
- A10 (Rajya Pada) is highlighted → focus on tangible work and career actions
GL in Uttara Phalguni 2nd Pada → Triggering in 2033
- Ghati Lagna falls in Uttara Phalguni 2nd pada
- This nakshatra degree triggers in 2033 when progressed Moon contacts it
- In Vimshottari: falls in Venus Dasha, Saturn Antardasha
- In Narayana Dasha: Taurus dasha running; Taurus is 7th from progressed Moon
- "5th and 9th lords conjoining there" = recognition possible
Yasas Sahama
- Yasas = fame/recognition sahama
- When progressed Moon activates Yasas Sahama = recognition is triggered
Roga Sahama (Health)
- Example: End of Revati (Tribhagi) = Roga Sahama triggered in 1983-84
- Shows when health issues arise during that period
Sahama Types
| Type | Nature |
|---|---|
| Event-based (Jalapathana, Labha, etc.) | Triggered at a specific point in time when Moon contacts the sahama |
| Duration-based (Jada, Roga, etc.) | Active as long as Moon is in contact; shows ongoing condition |
- Sri Lagna (SL) = Lakshmi's blessing; shows important manifestation in life; activated when progressed Moon contacts SL or 7th from it
- GL (Ghati Lagna) = power point; trines and 7th from GL also show recognition
