Rashi Tulya Navamsa / Navamsa Tulya Rashi — Deeper Teaching

What the names mean

• Transpose a position of the Rashi chart into Navamsa and read the influences there; and the reverse.
• As people normally use the two names, only the lagna is transposed.
• The teacher does not vouch for which name goes with which direction:

"I never bothered to remember exactly which one stands for what, so I am not 100% sure. I do not want to mislead you. One of them is Rasi Tulya Navamsa, the other one is Navamsa Tulya Rasi."

• He says to check a standard textbook for the names, and that the names do not matter if you understand what each reference stands for.
• People also use Rashi lagna placed in Navamsa as just an alternative Navamsa. That is not logical. You must know exactly what it means.

The example chart

Example (DOB: May 26, 1988, 7:27:54 AM) — the time is the rectified one the class uses.

Rashi: Gemini lagna with Mercury and Venus; Mars and Rahu in Aquarius; Saturn in Sagittarius; Ketu in Leo. Navamsa: Scorpio lagna with Jupiter, Venus and Ketu; Saturn in Gemini; Mars in Sagittarius; Mercury in Libra.

Rashi lagna placed in Navamsa

Meaning: Rashi lagna is the physical self. Navamsa is the dharmic self, the dharmic and marital environment. Rashi lagna placed in Navamsa shows how the dharmic environment influences the physical self.

Method: Forget the Rashi chart. Look only at Navamsa, with the Rashi lagna sign as lagna.

• The Navamsa lagna is Scorpio, but that is the conceptual dharmic self. The physical self is still Gemini.
• Take Gemini in Navamsa: Saturn is in it — suffering, inflicting pain, a lot of labour.
• Mars aspects it from Sagittarius (7th aspect) — a lot of fire. Two malefics on the lagna.
• Reading: he physically suffers from his dharmic activity. He may fast a lot, or sit in sadhana for 20 hours at a stretch without eating. Mistreatment of the body because of dharmic activities.

Navamsa lagna placed in Rashi

Meaning: Navamsa lagna is the self from the point of view of dharma — how one relates to one's own sense of dharma. Placed in Rashi, it shows what physical activities result from that dharmic sense.

• Take Scorpio as lagna in the Rashi chart.
• The house that stands out is the 8th, Gemini, with Mercury and Venus. The 8th is reaching for the unknown as part of one's dharmic pursuit.
• Mercury and Venus are the lagna lord and 5th lord of the Rashi chart. The Raja Yoga that sits in the Rashi lagna falls in the 8th from Navamsa lagna: serious tapas.
• The 10th, Leo, has Ketu. Physically he does what Ketu shows — detachment, letting things go, giving up things, what takes one toward moksha. That is the karma induced by his sense of dharma.

Transposing planets, not just lagna

"This is just the tip of the iceberg. Why should you only transpose lagna of Rashi chart? Why can't you transpose Jupiter, for example? Why can't you transpose Moon?"

To do it you must know what each planet stands for in each chart:

Rashi Mars placed in Navamsa — Mars is in Aquarius in Rashi:

• The Navamsa lagna stays where it is. The reading is with respect to Mars, not lagna.
• The 10th from Aquarius in Navamsa is Scorpio, with Jupiter, Venus and Ketu. The 10th is the karma of that physical energy — the work it performs — and this is Navamsa, so in the dharmic life.
• Ketu in Scorpio: spiritual life. Jupiter with Ketu: Vedic activities. Venus with Jupiter: teaching.
• Whatever physical energy he has is used for teaching, Vedic learning and spiritual growth.
• That energy is somewhat lacking. Rashi Mars is with Rahu in Aquarius. Rahu wants to weaken Mars and Rahu is particularly strong in Aquarius, so Mars is defeated there.

Rashi Venus placed in Navamsa — Venus is in Gemini in Rashi:

• Gemini in Navamsa holds Saturn. The physical pleasures suffer because of the dharmic life.

Navamsa Mars placed in Rashi — Mars is in Sagittarius in Navamsa:

• Sagittarius in the Rashi chart holds Saturn.
• The energy he has for dharmic activities strains his physical resources. He is physically overused; a lot of physical hard work.

Arudha Lagna (a student's question): yes. AL of the Rashi chart is the physical image. Take that sign in Navamsa to see how the dharmic life affects the image.

One zodiac — the master chart

• Rashi and Navamsa are not really two different charts. They are cast separately because that is easy to analyse.
• Parashara does not talk of separate charts. He talks of Mars of Rashi, Mars of Navamsa, Mars of Dashamsha, Mars of Vimshamsha, and so on.
• There are 16 Mercuries, 16 Jupiters, 16 Suns. Each occupies one rashi. 16 × 9 = 144 positions; with lagna as a tenth reference, 160.
• The signs are the same signs. In this chart the physical Mercury is in Gemini; Navamsa Mercury, an abstract representation of Mercury, is in Libra — the same physical Libra of the zodiac.

"This Gemini and this Gemini are not different Geminis. That is a misconception that some people have. The Navamsa is not cast in some other zodiac. It is the same zodiac."

• The rashis are all physical. Only the Rashi-chart planets are physical; the varga planets are abstract representations showing some abstract side of what the planet signifies.
• One could take any of the 160 positions as reference and any other as the point, and read the relationship. That is hard, so we stick to lagna. In Dashamsha, Siddhamsha or Vimshamsha it may be difficult; with Navamsa it is easy, because one is the sense of dharma and the other is physical existence.
• Signs are the links between charts. They do not move. Scorpio of Rashi is the same as Scorpio of Navamsa.

"Things happen because of interaction between divisional charts. They don't happen just because of one divisional chart."

Student question — Narayana Dasha of a divisional chart

• Question: when using Narayana Dasha of D-24, should the order of planets be taken from that chart?
• No. Whichever Narayana Dasha is used — Rashi, Navamsa or Dashamsha — the order in which planets give their results is based on the Rashi longitudes. The chara karakas are based on Rashi.

Moon in Arudha Lagna

Question: A person whose Moon is in Arudha Lagna, in Capricorn, is very slow and lazy. Is that the Moon?

Answer: Probably not the Moon — more likely Capricorn and Saturn.

• AL in a Saturnine sign takes Saturn's colour. Capricorn more than Aquarius: Aquarius can give a philosopher's image, Capricorn a sluggish, slow image.
• "Image" is not something fake. Arudha Lagna is what you are projecting, what is coming out.

Image given by an unafflicted Moon in AL:

• Beautiful, compassionate, kind, understanding
• No enemies; tries to be good with everybody and to see things from everybody's angle
• Very easygoing
• Relaxes and enjoys literary gatherings, scholarly and intellectual discussions; singing; pleasure-loving

If the Moon is weak or afflicted (debilitated, aspected by Saturn or Rahu, hemmed in papakartari by Saturn and Rahu or Saturn and Mars):

• Wavering — the Moon moves fast and changes shape from day to day
• The image of somebody who cannot make up his mind, weak-minded, chapala chitta — fickle-minded
• In the image they give, Moon and Mercury are very similar. "Like father, like son."

"Plain vanilla lazy, that is unlikely."

• Laziness is usually shown by Saturn in Saturnine signs, by an afflicted or weak Saturn.

Saturn in the 3rd House — Classical Dictum

• One of the classical dictums: Saturn in the 3rd house makes one lazy.
• The 3rd is the house of energy and initiative. A fiery planet like Mars gives energy there. An airy planet like Saturn disperses and depletes it.
• More than lazy, it shows somebody who does not have to do things. He does not do things, but he does not have to. Things come easily.
• Saturn in the 3rd is in the 10th from the 6th house. The enemies suffer bad karma. So it is good for the native.

"Saturn in 3rd is good, but it can make one lazy."

The same planet gives both:

• The planet who shows lack of energy is the planet who gives energy. The planet who shows lack of endurance is the planet who gives endurance.
• Strong Saturn: a workaholic. Weak Saturn: a lazy person.

Short Q&A — a Housewife’s 10th House, Gandanta Planets, Venus with the Nodes

A native who never had a job

• A student raises a housewife who never wanted a job.
• Do not think a housewife's work is easy. An office worker, when not busy, can surf the internet and talk to people. A housewife may be busy all day cooking and taking care of children.
• The 10th house is not only work at a big company. As long as the person is doing important work and is busy, it shows as the 10th house and the 6th house.

A Gandanta planet tied to a house

• Read Gandanta more at the physical level than for work, education and the like.
• Gandanta planet associated with the 10th house: knee problems. It can also show a weak 10th lord, work problems, not finding or not wanting a good job — but the physical reading is more likely.
• 6th lord in Gandanta, or a planet in Gandanta in the 6th: liver, spleen, digestive problems. That is a stronger possibility than trouble to the maternal uncle.

Venus with Rahu and Ketu in a divisional chart

• Case: Virgo lagna in D-24, Venus with Rahu and Ketu in the 1st house.
• If Rahu and Ketu are with Venus, Venus can keep them in control even when their agendas are bad — as long as Venus himself does not have a bad agenda.
• For Virgo lagna Venus is the 2nd and 9th lord, a functional benefic. Rahu and Ketu are the 6th and 3rd lords, functional malefics.
• Rahu and Ketu are like demons and Venus is the teacher of demons. They cannot trouble much.
