D-10 Is the Chart of Karma

"Career" is a very narrow word. The 10H is the karma sthana, and D-10 shows the karma you do — the activities you perform, what you contribute to society.

"Even if it's not my career, if I am teaching astrology to all of you, it is my karma. So you will be able to see that in my D-10 even though it's not my career."

The Ten Deities

Each Rasi is divided into ten parts of 3° each. Each part is ruled by a Dikpalaka — a ruler of a direction. Eight are the Ashta Dikpalakas of the horizontal plane. The ninth and tenth, Brahma and Ananta, rule downward and upward: the third dimension.

• Odd signs: Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera, Ishana, Brahma, Ananta.
• Even signs: the reverse — Ananta, Brahma, Ishana, Kubera, and so on down to Indra.

Notes on the Deities

Agni is not only physical fire. The digestion of food is an agni (jatharagni). Understanding spoken words is another agni. Agni is transformation.

Yama is not "death".

"Yama upholds dharma. He gives punishment for what you do. He is the leveler. He upholds the ultimate dharma of the universe."

Nirriti is the daughter of Himsa, violence personified. Her children are Bhaya (fear), Mahabhaya (terror) and Mrityu (death). In Vastu the southwest is ruled by Rahu, so she is like Rahu. She can show good or bad — it depends on the sign and the planet.

Vayu is the father of Hanuman and Bhima. He produces energy. Someone working to strengthen the downtrodden must have some influence of Vayu.

Kubera: a D-10 full of planets in Kubera amsa is a very money-minded person.

Ishana: "Ishanah sarva-vidyanam" — he gives all knowledge. His direction is opposite Nirriti's. As Nirriti shows demonliness and irreligiousness, Ishana shows religiousness, purity and good knowledge.

Brahma and Ananta are not directions of the material plane. Both explore a further dimension — Brahma by digging with a spade to see what is there, Ananta by rising.

The Deity Never Gives the Career

A planet in Yama's amsa is not thereby a soldier. For a soldier, Mars must be involved.

• Jupiter in the 10H makes a teacher. If that Jupiter is in Yama amsa, he teaches ruthlessly — strict, punishing students who do not do their homework.

"You never get the career from the deity. You get the career from the house, the planet, and the planets influencing it. But in what way, what is the manner in which that particular activity is done — those further details you see from the deity."

The deities show the guiding force behind a planet.

D-10 Chart Examples

Chart 1 — Aishwarya Rai

Birth data: November 1, 1973 · 4:07 AM IST · 74°51′E, 12°54′N D-10 lagna: Leo

The Raja Yoga

• The 10H is Taurus. Mars is in it, but its lord is Venus.
• Venus, the 10th lord, is in the 5H (Sagittarius) — the house of following, fame and abilities.
• With him is Jupiter, the 5th lord, in his own sign and Moolatrikona. A planet in Moolatrikona is in his office: he does his duty. Jupiter gives much fame, following and popularity.
• A Kendra lord (10L) with a Trikona lord (5L) is a Raja Yoga. It sits in a Trikona.

Where a Raja Yoga sits decides how it comes. Kendras are ruled by Vishnu and show effort. Trikonas are ruled by Lakshmi and show blessing.

"There is a difference between effort and struggle."

So she becomes very popular and very successful, and it comes easily — on the basis of her birth, of who she is.

Nature of the career: Venus, in a Raja Yoga, dominates Mars who merely sits in the 10H. Venus gives entertainment — a show person.

Venus in an Enemy's Sign

A student pointed out that Venus is in Jupiter's sign — an inimical sign.

• Venus has a great Raja Yoga but is not in a good state. The person may be uncomfortable with the karma; there can be disappointments with it.
• When the planets forming a Raja Yoga are enemies, the yoga gives its results, but something undesirable comes with it. It is not a pure Raja Yoga. It is still good for material success.
• Had Venus formed it with Mercury, in a sign of Mercury, Venus or Saturn — all friends — the yoga would be stronger and the person happy in it.
• PVNR's own D-10: the 9th and 10th lords, Mercury and Venus, friends, are in Parivartana. "I follow my dharma and my karma, and I do it happily."

"Who knows if she is fully happy? She may not be doing it with that satisfaction. But it doesn't matter. She is popular. That's what this Raja Yoga shows."

A student asked whether material success should be read from the Arudha. PVNR: Arudhas have not been taught yet.

Venus in Indra Amsa

From Venus as 10th lord: an entertainer. From Indra amsa: what kind — powerful, commanding respect and authority.

"Indra is the king, so she is a queen-like entertainer. That is the image that she has anyway."

The 10th lord in the 5H already gives popularity; Indra amsa enforces it. Granting that the D-10 lagna is right, one can say without knowing whose chart it is that this person is very influential.

Jupiter in Kubera Amsa

Jupiter is the 5th lord in the 5H: her following and popularity. In Kubera amsa, the focus of that following is money.

"Because more people like her, she will say, I want more money, then only I will make the movie, because I have so much following."

PVNR corrected himself at once: this does not say she makes the money. It shows only how she looks at her own abilities and the popularity that results from them — "I can make more money". Money-mindedness, nothing more.

Saturn in the 2nd — Nirriti Amsa

A student asked whether her money can be read from the 2H of D-10, where Saturn sits in Virgo.

• No. Money is seen in D-2. D-10 is not the chart of money.
• The 2H of D-10 is the seed of the Artha Trikona: the resources used in one's karma.
• Saturn owns the 6H and 7H from Leo. The 7H is the stronger — two planets are in it (Sun and Rahu in Aquarius). So mainly 7H results, then 6H.
• A house is a circumstance; its lord is the consciousness applied to it. The 7th lord is how one interacts with people. As 6th lord, how one deals with enemies.
• So her relationships and her way of dealing with people are her main resource for building her karma, and there is something Saturnine about them.
• Saturn is in Nirriti amsa, the irreligious amsa. This is not auspicious and suggests something negative. PVNR declined to say it publicly.

Chart 2 — Tom Hanks

Birth data: July 9, 1956 · 11:17 AM · 7 hours west of GMT · 122°W01′, 37°N58′ (PVNR: the West Coast, probably Northern California) D-10 lagna: Taurus

Take the Strongest Artha Trikona

The 10H is the karma sthana, but all three Artha Trikonas show the career:

"Take the strongest Artha Trikona — that will be what the person does."

If the 6H is stronger than the 10H, overcoming obstacles is what decides the karma: he spends all his time overcoming obstacles, and the kind of obstacle tells the kind of work.

The 6H dominates — not only by the number of planets but by which planets:

• Venus is the 6th lord in the 6H.
• Mercury is the 2nd lord.
• So the lords of two Artha Trikonas join in one Artha Trikona house.

Rule: when two of the three lords of a Trikona join in one of its three houses, that house dominates the Trikona.

"Never always blindly go to the 10th house. Sometimes you may have to go to the 6th house."

Even when the 10H shows the karma, the 6H still shows what obstacles he overcomes and whether he overcomes them.

Service or Business?

Thumb rule: a strong 6H is working for somebody; a strong 7H is business. The 7H is a Kama Trikona — desire and relationships — and a man with strong desires and many relationships becomes a businessman.

Here the 7th lord Mars is in the 6H with Venus. So for all one knows he could be in business. But even then he works very hard, physically, at it. Service or business, he is always working hard, always overcoming obstacles.

Venus — Moolatrikona, Vakri, Atmakaraka

Of the four planets in the 6H, Venus is the strong one: in his own sign, and Libra is his Moolatrikona.

• A planet in its own house is like a man at home — relaxed. The lawn needs mowing; he says, next week.
• A planet in Moolatrikona is like a man at the office — duty-minded.
• So Venus does his job: the person overcomes obstacles with zeal. Venus also shows passion.

A student pointed out that Venus is retrograde.

"Retrogression means a state of having a strong desire. A planet which is Vakri shows strong desire from past life. It is like somebody with a strong desire that was unfulfilled in the last life."

• In some other house this may be bad. In the house of obstacles it is even better: Venus brings a strong leftover desire from the past life into his karma.
• He overcomes obstacles with a missionary kind of zeal.

The reading: an entertainer, because it is Venus. Unlike Aishwarya Rai — whose Raja Yoga in the 5H gave her everything on a silver platter, on the basis of how she looks — this is the 6H. Things do not come to him easily. He has to work hard, and he likes it. A hard-working, committed, disciplined entertainer.

Venus in Indra Amsa

The same amsa as Aishwarya Rai's Venus. A student said: very popular. PVNR corrected that.

"A planet being in Indra amsa doesn't mean the person will be very popular. People may hate Indra, but he has authority. It only means he will have authority — the person can decide how things are done."

A very successful entertainer with much power and authority.

PVNR then named the native. He does not need to work hard, being so talented, yet he insists on doing something different every time and puts his soul into it.

What that past-life desire was could be seen from Venus in D-60, the chart of the past life. PVNR left it: he had verified only that the D-10 lagna is right; the D-60 lagna may be wrong.

Sun in the 10th and the Atmakaraka

A student asked whether Sun in the 10H represents the soul.

• Sun is the Naisargika Atmakaraka — the atma of the whole universe. The natural karakas have no big role in reading a D-10. In D-10, Sun is the planet of politics.
• A person's individual soul is shown by his own Atmakaraka, computed differently for each chart. The computation comes two classes later; the software marks it "AK".
• For this native the Atmakaraka is Venus. That makes Venus stronger still.

"He puts his soul into this particular theme — overcoming obstacles relating to entertaining people."

Chart 3 — Amartya Sen

Birth data: November 3, 1933 · 3:40 PM IST · 87°E32′, 23°N55′ D-10 lagna: Gemini

The 10th House and the Parivartana

• The 10H is Pisces, a sattvic sign. In it: Mars and Sun.
• Mars, lord of Scorpio, is in Pisces. Jupiter, lord of Pisces, is in Scorpio. An exchange of houses — Parivartana.

Two planets exchanging houses give the results of each other.

"If I go to New Jersey and I am staying in Narayan's house, and Narayan comes to Boston and stays in my house, I will try to be like Narayan, the way he takes care of that house. I may not succeed fully, but I will at least try."

• Practically, the 10H holds Jupiter and Sun, not Mars and Sun.
• A student asked whether this equals Jupiter in his own house. Close, not fully — he gives perhaps 70–80% of those results.

"When you look at a house, don't stop there. See if there is a Parivartana. Extend the planets in your mind and then analyze the chart."

Jupiter Dominates — a Career of Respect

Jupiter shows professions that get respect — not the respect of power, which is Sun's. Sun is the king, someone feared; a political leader. Jupiter is respected as a Brahmin.

• Teachers, lecturers, professors
• Judges, lawyers
• The priest of a temple

This native is a professor.

Obstacles: the exchange is between the 6th lord (Mars) and the 10th lord (Jupiter). One house is a Kendra, the other the house of obstacles. He does his karma after overcoming many obstacles.

Sun is the 3rd lord — determination. Sun is also the political planet. So: a Jupiterian activity, much politics going on around him, and determination in dealing with it.

Sun still commands in Jupiter's house.

"If the king comes to the priest's house, who will take orders and who will give orders? It is still the king."

A teacher, but with a strong influence of Sun on the career.

Jupiter in Nirriti Amsa

Jupiter in the 10H in Pisces from Gemini lagna is the same picture as Sanjay Rath's D-24. On that alone this could be a spreader of Vedic knowledge, a highly spiritual person, the head of a religious seat.

But Jupiter is in the amsa of Nirriti — godlessness, irreligiousness, fear; and also turning a new page, breaking barriers, like Rahu.

• Religiousness and spirituality are ruled out.
• Respected, because of Jupiter; a teacher or a judge.
• Works at something people normally do not work at, and breaks barriers in it.

Nirriti can show good or bad, by sign and planet:

• Rahu in Nirriti amsa — one would say at once a thug, a member of the mafia.
• Jupiter in Nirriti amsa — a learned person engaged in neglected work, work not normally considered godly. Here Nirriti shows good things.

The other side stays:

"Some of his knowledge could be totally nonsense. Based on the chart — I don't know economics, I don't know his researches. He is a very well-known person with a Nobel Prize. But what the chart shows is some of the knowledge could be just downright nonsense. It could be demonic knowledge, wrong, misled knowledge."

Sun in Vayu Amsa

Vayu is gaining strength and giving strength.

The native won the Nobel Prize for Economics. He was a professor of economics who studied the downtrodden of poor countries and the economic policies that would bring them gains. The work was novel — breaking a barrier, as Nirriti shows.

A student asked what kind of politics Sun shows — trying to become President, a senator, a member of parliament?

• Sun is in Vayu amsa, not Indra amsa. It is not the politics of seeking power.
• It is politics relating to giving strength to people: the upliftment of the downtrodden.

"Just because Sun is involved in the 10th house of a person, don't jump to the conclusion that it will be a politician. Using the deity, you can get a better sense."

Why Not a Politician?

A student had read Mars and Sun in the 10H as a politician.

• Without the Parivartana — just Sun and Mars in the 10H — it would clearly be a politician.
• Had Jupiter been in some other sign, Libra for example, PVNR would have guessed a respected politician: Jupiter still owns the 10H and aspects it (Graha Drishti, his 5th aspect from Scorpio).
• With the Parivartana it is Sun and Jupiter, with Jupiter as if in his own house. The roles reverse.

"Now he is a political teacher, not a respected politician — a slightly politically oriented, respected teacher."

Politics or statesmanship? Sun alone, in sattvic Pisces, could be statesmanship. But Jupiter is in the 10H only through Mars, and Mars is the fighter, the soldier. So besides power play and statesmanship at his university he probably did some politics too — suppressing some people. PVNR says this from the chart, not from knowledge of the man.

Chart 4 — A Technocrat-Businessman (1961)

Birth data: July 25, 1961 · 5:07 PM IST · 75°E50′, 22°N44′ D-10 lagna: Pisces

PVNR kept the native's name anonymous.

Service or Business?

The class first guessed "service". The houses to compare are the 6H (overcoming obstacles) and the 7H (desire). The 10H does not decide it — a businessman has karma too.

"This is only a thumb rule. It doesn't work always. It works only maybe 70% or 80% of the time."

The 3H, 7H and 11H are the Kama Trikonas.

• Saturn owns the 11H (and the 12H) — a Kama Trikona lord in the 7H.
• Venus owns the 3H (and the 8H) — another Kama Trikona lord in the 7H.
• The lords of the seed and of the culmination of the Kama Trikona join in the house of desire itself.
• Venus is the Karaka of desire in any chart, and he too is in the house of desire.

"He is not happy working for somebody doing something very limited. He has a strong desire to do something. And usually people who have a strong desire, they do something on their own. That is the logic behind the 7th house showing business."

Lagna lord in the 9H. Jupiter, the lagna lord, is in the 9H. The 9H is the house of the guru and of dharma; in D-10 it is the house of the boss.

"If the 1st lord is in the 9th house, that means you are your boss. You like to be your boss."

The shastras give this result for the lagna lord in the 9H: the person is very independent. In D-24 the same placement points to the guru.

7th lord in the 10H. Mercury, the 7th lord, is the only planet in the karma sthana (Sagittarius). He takes all his desire into his karma.

Mercury's Argala on his own house. Mercury is in the 4th from the 7H, so he has Argala on it. A house that gets Argala from its own lord is much strengthened: the lord is not only in charge of the house, he contributes to it.

"When your boss is able to contribute to your project, the project will be more successful."

The weak 6H still gives its results. In some daśā he may work for a company. But this person starts his own business at a very young age — and he did.

Mercury — Careers of the Planets

Mercury himself shows business. The careers PVNR listed:

Varnas of the planets (from the second class): Jupiter and Venus are Brahmanas; Sun and Mars are Kshatriyas; Moon and Mercury are Vaishyas; Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are Shudras. Vaishyas are traders — so Mercury shows trade.

Mercury in Kubera amsa. All his desires, all his karma, all the trading and business he does are guided by money.

What Kind of Business?

A student asked how the type of business is seen.

• The 7H shows the business. The 7th lord shows the consciousness of business — how he applies his intelligence to it.
• Mercury: something analytical, mathematical.
• Mars and Ketu are in the 4th from Mercury (in Pisces, the lagna): they have Argala on him. They also have Rasi Drishti on him — Pisces aspects Sagittarius.
• Mars and Ketu show hardware, electronics.
• Mercury sits in the 10H, so this is equally a 4th-house Argala on the 10H (Sagittarius). To see the kind of career, see the Argala on the 10H.

"Rasi Drishti makes it permanent, not at a particular daśā. So always he was doing some hardware-related business, building some custom high-tech hardware."

Counting the Argala (a student asked for it step by step): to see Argala on a planet, count from that planet. The 2nd from Mercury is Capricorn — empty. The 4th is Pisces — Mars and Ketu. The student took Jupiter to be in the 11th from Mercury; he is in the 12th. Count from 1 to 12, not from 0 to 11.

Which sign to read? For the business, read the sign of the 7th house, not the sign of the 7th lord.

• The 7H is Virgo, a Mercurian sign: intelligent, analytical people. A hardware business full of intelligent designers.
• Mercury's sign, Sagittarius, shows how he does his karma in society in general: it is the 9th of the natural zodiac, so there is a dharma he follows in it; and it is a fiery sign, so he does it with fire.
• Signs can be read, but the Argalas are what decide.

"From Mercury you see business. From the Argala of Mars and Ketu you see it's a hardware business. And from the amsa of Mercury you see what is the motivation — and the guiding principle is money."

Dharma Trikona — Who He Is

Artha and Kama Trikonas show the work and the desires. The Dharma Trikona defines who the person is — his abilities, his dharma. PVNR's example: his artha is writing software for DVD players and video conferencing; teaching astrology is done out of his sense of dharma. Every house matters in every chart.

• Mars and Ketu, who together own Scorpio, the 9H, are in lagna.
• Jupiter, the lagna lord, is in the 9H.
• A Parivartana of the 1st and 9th lords. The results are as if Mars and Ketu were in the 9H and Jupiter in the 1H.

The Five Mahapurusha Yogas

Mahapurusha means a great person. The five planets other than Sun and Moon — they stand for the Pancha Bhutas — each give one.

Definition: the planet must be in a quadrant — not a trine; the quadrant shows effort — and be exalted, in own house, or in Moolatrikona.

The software lists the yogas of any varga under the strengths tab. The results of each yoga come in the next class.

Here: Jupiter is not in a quadrant. Through the Parivartana he acts as if in Pisces, in lagna. It is not a perfect Mahapurusha Yoga, but a kind of one.

Hamsa stands for purity: a very pure, pious, respected person who spreads dharma in society. So this business-minded businessman is also pious and religious.

Jupiter in Ishana Amsa

Jupiter in lagna by itself could be simply a respected man, a teacher. But:

• Jupiter is in the amsa of Ishana, the deity of religiousness.
• The house he exchanges with is the 9H, the house of dharma. The theme repeats.

"He does his business, but he does not hurt people. He is very religious. And he has a parallel activity apart from his business — a parallel activity of spreading religiousness."

Why "spreading"? Lagna is who you are. Spreading is a 10H matter. Jupiter also owns the 10H, Sagittarius. So he is not only pious; he does religious work in society.

The Native

• A learned technocrat in custom high-tech electronics hardware. He sold one company, started another, and was on his third startup.
• By religion deeply observant: he teaches his religion, and yoga, to the young people of his community.

Mercury in Kubera amsa and Jupiter in Ishana amsa are both tied to the 10H — Mercury sits in it, Jupiter owns it.

"It's not like he is an ascetic or sadhu. He wants to make money in the business. Instead of selling the company for $5 million, if he gets $6 million, he will haggle for that. He is very money-minded. Yet he wants to help people and he wants to be very religious. He balances both the aspects of his life."

Key Rules Summary from This Lesson

Rule 1: The Deity Gives the Manner, Not the Matter

House, sign and planet give the career. The amsa ruler gives the kind of activity within it and the guiding force behind it. Know what the god stands for.

Rule 2: See All Artha Trikonas

In D-10 do not go blindly to the 10H.

Take the strongest. When two of the three lords join in one of the three houses, that house dominates.

Rule 3: Where the Raja Yoga Sits

A Raja Yoga between enemies, or with a planet in an enemy's sign, still gives material success, but with something undesirable attached.

Rule 4: Malefics in the 3rd and 6th

Krura grahas in the 3H and 6H are auspicious materially: boldness and the overcoming of obstacles need their cruelty and energy. The sign shows the circumstance; the planet shows the effort.

Rule 5: Vipareeta Raja Yoga

The lord of a Dusthana (6, 8, 12) in a Dusthana. Struggle at first; the problem is overcome; then results better than a normal Raja Yoga, earned with much effort.

Rule 6: Vakri Planets

A retrograde planet carries a strong desire left unfulfilled in the last life. In the house of obstacles this is an advantage: zeal.

Rule 7: Parivartana

Two planets in each other's signs behave like each other — about 70–80%. Before judging a house, check for an exchange and place the planets accordingly in the mind.

Rule 8: Service or Business

Strong 6H — service. Strong 7H — business. A thumb rule, right 70–80% of the time. The 7th lord in the 6H: even a businessman who toils.

Rule 9: Lagna Lord in the 9th of D-10

The 9H of D-10 is the boss. Lagna lord there: one is one's own boss — very independent.

Rule 10: Argala From a House's Own Lord

A house receiving Argala from its own lord is much strengthened. To find the nature of any matter, look at the Argalas on it — they decide.
