Jaimini Sutras 1.2.102–1.2.116: Authorship and Knowledge by Planet

Authorship (1.2.102–1.2.104)

Planet in the 1st (Swamsa) or the 5th

Notes from the class:

• Venus as critic. Venus gives the eye for detail. Only a person who grasps the nitty-gritty can criticise anything.
• Jupiter covers all the traditional subjects.
• Mimamsa is one of the six darsanas. It is ruled by Mercury: argument and analysis.
• Moon and Sankhya. The Moon represents medicine, and Sankhya is one of the bases of Ayurveda — kapha, pitta and vata come from the three gunas. A very good singer should have the Moon in a trine.
• Ketu and mathematics. Ketu is the highest form of intuition, and mathematics needs it.

"Given an equation, it can be solved in many ways. There is a long way to go about it or a short way. The more well-developed your intuition, the more easy it becomes to crack a solution."

• Rahu is not in this run of sutras. In the chart discussion the teacher reads Rahu in a trine as interest in the big and the heavy and in abstract mathematics. Abstraction as such is hiding, which is Ketu; but abstract mathematics is the Rahu kind.
• Other faces of Ketu on the Navamsa lagna: interest in Jyotish, small instruments and watches, ease with fuzzy logic — and also extreme anger.

Sutra 1.2.115 — Jupiter's influence

• Jupiter aspecting or joining these planets in the 5th gives all-round knowledge, traditional and modern, and proficiency in at least one branch.
• Jupiter is expansive (akasa tattva). It accentuates whatever it joins.

Sutra 1.2.116 — the 2nd house too

• The results of 1.2.102–1.2.115 apply to the 2nd house as well.
• A student read out that Parasara extends them to the 2nd and 3rd. The teacher: limit yourself to 1, 2, 5 and 9. Otherwise all twelve houses end up showing everything.

Differentiation by House Position

From Pt. Sanjay Rath's Atri lecture, as the teacher reports it:

• Jupiter in the 1st, 2nd, 5th or 9th gives what Jupiter stands for in every case; the house tells how it comes.
• Applied to Jyotish: a person who started on his own, with nobody teaching, should have the Jyotish planet on the lagna or the 5th. Learning from a guru shows in the 9th.

Which planets count

• Look only at planets in these houses or aspecting the Navamsa lagna. Do not go by where a house lord is placed.
• A planet in a bad house still blesses the native if it aspects the lagna. Example: Leo rising in Navamsa with Ketu in the 6th in Capricorn. Ketu aspects Leo by rasi drishti, so Ketu has blessed the native — mathematics, or one of Ketu's other significations.
• Lordship is not used. When students called a conjunction of two lords in the 9th a Raja Yoga, the teacher stopped them: none of these sutras speak of lords. Take each graha as a graha, with its natural significations, and see its influence on the lagna.
• These are the talents you bring from your past life.
• Strength adds: a vargottama Saturn gives patience and the capacity for hard work. Mercury is the businessman; Venus is the micro-manager and perfectionist, the person who does quality assurance well.
• Be careful how you confirm with the native. Ask "are you good at singing?" and everybody says yes.
• A student asked how to see the abilities a person does not have. "Don't look for it."

Swamsa: Navamsa Lagna or Karakamsa?

• For abilities and interests of the physical person — repairing watches, a skill — use the Navamsa lagna.
• For matters of the soul, such as moksha, use the Karakamsa (the Atmakaraka's Navamsa).
• For religiousness, or joining a religious order, use both.
• The Atmakaraka is not counted as an ordinary planet in a trine unless the question is about soul-level desires.

Jaimini Sutras 1.2.118–1.2.119: Speech Defects and Khemadruma Yoga

Sutra 1.2.118 — Ketu in the 2nd

• Ketu in the 2nd aspected by malefics → stammering and other speech defects. Ketu produces defects; it holds back.
• The teacher's own finding: stammering comes when Mercury, the karaka of speech, or the 2nd lord is afflicted by Ketu.
• A student had been taught that Ketu in the 2nd gives sphuta vak, clear speech, and recalled a chart with Ketu in the 2nd and very clear speech. The teacher: Ketu is anything but clear — it hides. Only a very strong Ketu aspected by benefics gives clear speech; then it becomes like a rishi.
• Do not judge from the rasi position alone. B.V. Raman had Rahu in the 2nd; that did not make him a liar. See the 2nd lord and the rest.
• Strong (exalted) Mercury or 2nd lord: the person says the right thing, in the right number of words, at the right time. Afflicted Mercury: he beats around the bush and talks of anything but the subject.
• Affliction means Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, or debilitation. The Sun is krura, not a papa graha, and is not as bad as Mars: Sun with Mercury is Budha-Aditya Yoga. Combustion calls for spirituality in the matter ruled by the combust planet — with a combust Venus, a spiritual spouse is a must, or the person suffers.
• Asked whether the 8th house should be read for these as well, the teacher said he does not use it.

Sutra 1.2.119 — Khemadruma Yoga

• Malefics simultaneously in the 2nd and the 8th from Lagna, Arudha Lagna and Swamsa cause Khemadruma Yoga — poverty.
• Asked whether both houses are needed: 2nd and 8th is the yoga, but either one is also fine. Malefics in the 2nd from Arudha Lagna alone destroy the Raja Yogas and bring loss of position and money.
• If the Moon aspects the malefics in the 2nd/8th, abject poverty is sure — the same principle as the Moon making tuberculosis sure.
• The result manifests in the dasas of the signs or planets concerned.
• The reverse: a strong benefic such as Mercury in the 2nd from Arudha Lagna is a Raja Yoga and gives a kingdom. The teacher cites Sri Rama, with Mercury in the 2nd from Arudha Lagna, getting his kingdom back in Mercury's Moola Dasa.

What the yoga damages depends on the reference point (from Pt. Sanjay Rath's lecture on Khemadruma):

• A student feared the readings from Lagna and from Arudha Lagna would contradict each other. They do not: each answers a different question. Take the right reference point and the right varga.

Arudha Lagna in divisional charts

• A student tried to apply his rasi Arudha Lagna inside the Navamsa. The teacher: "In Navamsa, don't look at Arudha Lagna. At least I don't use it… That is my take for now."
• When a text just says Arudha Lagna, it means the rasi chart.
• Arudhas computed within a varga are used only when you are studying that varga's own subject — how the marriage is perceived in the Navamsa, how the career is perceived in the Dasamsa.

Complete Marana Karaka Sthana List

Read out at a student's request during the first chart:

• Count it from the karya bhava, not only from the lagna. Venus's Marana Karaka Sthana is the 6th. For marriage, count the 6th from the 7th house: that is the 12th from lagna. So Venus in the 12th can give serious trouble in married life, or no marriage.
• The principle: see the house where the planet does not want to do its work.
• Ketu is the moksha karaka and does not want family. So the 2nd is its Marana Karaka Sthana.
