An Ārūḍha in the Lagna, and Two Ārūḍhas in One Sign

An ārūḍha in the lagna

• The class opened with a student's question: what does it mean when an ārūḍha falls in the lagna?
• Answer: any ārūḍha in the lagna influences the person's life.
• Ārūḍha = "that which rises", that which manifests. It also shows the circumstances.
• The lord is the carrier of the effects, the medium through which they come. When the lord of that house also closely influences the lagna, the result is stronger still.

A9 (Bhāgyārūḍha) in the lagna

• From one of the Bhṛgu nāḍīs: when the ārūḍha of the 9th house is in the lagna, the person continues to be fortunate as time passes.
• Bhāgyārūḍha = the manifestation of fortune, "when fortune rises".
• The circumstances are fortunate. If things do not go right, something happens and they fall back into place.

A3 in the lagna

• The person is focused on communication, or has an energetic, entrepreneurial nature. A3 brings the energy of Mars with it.
• See the sign too. The sign the ārūḍha is in colours it.
• Example given: PVNR has A3 in the lagna, in Virgo. (The class notes print his natal chart as the first example. Virgo lagna; the 3rd is Scorpio, its lord Mars is in Aries, the 6th from it, so the pada is the 6th from Aries — Virgo.) So how his communication comes across, in writing or speaking, has the nature of Virgo:
  • Virgo = the natural 6th sign = service.
  • Intellectual, and above all analytical and perfectionist.
  • Virgo people point out faults, not from meanness. They want perfection from themselves too.

"He wants things to be very correct. Even if, as a joke, you very casually comment something, he is very serious about it. He will say, 'Oh no, this is not actually this, it's actually this.'"

A10 in the lagna — Rājya Pada

• A10 in the lagna = how karma, one's actions, manifest in the lagna. The person is action-oriented, karma-oriented, typically hardworking.
• A10 is also called Rājya Pada — getting padavi (position). The person may become famous eventually. The class notes put it as: the fame comes when this ārūḍha is triggered.
• "Famous" must be judged by deśa, kāla, pātra. The teacher's example: a friend from a remote farming village, the only one there to graduate, who took an engineering degree, a master's in the US, and did well. Against where he was born and raised he has come a long way, and he is respected in his village. Such a chart will show the indications of fame; read them in proportion.
• Also see the planetary combinations in the ārūḍha and adjust.

A9 in the 7th house

• Fortune rises after marriage.

Two ārūḍhas in one sign

• A student asked about A3 together with AL. If two ārūḍhas are in the same house they influence each other, and depending on the planets' influence one dominates the other.
• Maharṣi Parāśara said the Ārūḍha Lagna is the most important ārūḍha.
• Usually there is a compromise, or one goes down and the other goes up.

"No two can simultaneously coexist together. … One of them will give at one time. No two will give at the same time."

• It depends on the daśā. Even within a sign's period you can break it down by which ārūḍhas are in the sign and which aspect it, and which comes first. The teacher said this is not settled and is open for research.
• UL and A6 together — not good. A6 shows obstacles and disharmony. For marriage, the 6th is the house of celibacy, because it is the 12th from the 7th.
• AL and UL together — often a difficult situation, because one has to survive.

"Either you enhance your image, or you compromise and save your marriage."

• A student asked whether they can coexist. Answer: no. One person has to compromise. In some cases both compromise; or the manifestations stay separate.

Apply one parameter at a time

• There are many parameters. Each has to be applied in turn, like an assembly line.
• The teacher's image: dirty water passing through a series of filters comes out cleaner after each one. Use each parameter at the right point and it changes the final reading.

Bādhakeśa — the Obstacle That Works on the Mind

Definition

• Bādhakeśa is read from the lagna. (From the Ārūḍha Lagna you only look at benefics and malefics, how they are placed, and their natural significations.)
• It depends on the type of sign:
  • Movable sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) → the 11th lord
  • Fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) → the 9th lord
  • Dual sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) → the 7th lord
• A student asked why it is the 7th, 9th and 11th. The teacher said the exact reason is not known to him; there may be a hidden one.

How it works

• Bādhakeśa is a troublemaker, one who gives obstacles.

"This obstacle works on a mental level. It influences your thinking, it influences your thought process, and so things happen inexplicably. It cannot be traced so easily."

• You come out of a situation and ask yourself: why did I do such a thing? What made me do it? You try to explain it logically and cannot.
• A student asked whether the trouble comes in the area of the house involved. That is one indication: if the 11th lord is the bādhakeśa, the obstacle comes through friends, through associations, or when you are trying to fulfil your desires. But not always.
• Also see what kind of planet it is. Mercury: through communication, or when you are trying to communicate.
• The planet still does its work as the lord of its house. Being the bādhakeśa, it does this as well.

Bādhakeśa who is also the Ātmakāraka

• Then the obstacle has an association with the past life. The teacher said this is so in his own chart.

Bādhakeśa with the 6th

• Bādhakeśa associated with the 6th house or the 6th lord gives problems with black magic.

Graha Ārūḍha

What it shows

• The same student asked: if she says "he is an intelligent fellow", is that the graha ārūḍha speaking?
• Answer: no. Graha ārūḍha is not your impression of someone, nor his of you.

"Graha ārūḍha is more about relationship. It's not about impression. … It is how a particular lagna will be disposed towards you."

• "Relationship" here means how they influence you, how you influence them, and how you get along.

Example — the graha ārūḍha of Mars

• Take the graha ārūḍha of Mars, for Aries, and say it falls in the 9th house.
• The 9th is a trine, so it is favourable, and it is the house of guidance. People with Aries lagna will be helpful to this native as guides. He should take guidance from them.
• A student offered "fatherly". The teacher corrected it: the 9th house is guidance; Mars is not fatherly. The quality of Mars in Aries shows — authoritative, commanding, clear-cut instruction: do this, do that.
• If instead the graha ārūḍha for Leo falls in the 9th, such people will be fatherly — the Sun is the father.

Limits

• The teacher said plainly that his knowledge of graha ārūḍha is limited. It may have many more implications.
• Use this one meaning, test it in various charts, and see how it works. One can manage without graha ārūḍha for the time being.
• It came up once more in the D-12 example (Part 7): the native's own perception of his mother, and how the two get along, belong to the graha ārūḍha. They are independent of what she is. A person may not get along with his mother; that does not change the fact that she is hardworking.
