Arudha Significance in Lagna, Badhakesha & Graha Arudha (Substitute Class)
Note: substitute class taught by an advanced student. Arudha Lagna in the lagna itself: when AL coincides with the lagna sign, the person's image and their true inner nature are the same — what you see is what you get. Badhakesha (obstruction lord): the lord of the Badhakasthana (11H for movable lagnas, 9H for fixed, 7H for dual) creates inexplicable blocks — chronic unresolvable obstacles in the areas of life it touches. Graha Arudha in practice: how the graha arudha of each planet shows how that planet's quality is projected into the world.
"When Arudha Lagna falls in the lagna itself, the native is transparent — their public image matches their private reality. They cannot hide who they are."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Arudha Padas — Core Principles
What Arudhas Represent
- Arudha = "that which rises" or "that which manifests"
- Arudhas show circumstances — how things manifest in the external, tangible world
- Lagna (lagna lord) = what drives the person internally; the intelligence behind actions
- Arudha = how that internal drive actually manifests as results and circumstances in the outer world
- The distinction: lagna lord → intentions, actions, thoughts; Arudha → actual manifestation, results, what others see
Key Rule: Two Arudhas Cannot Co-Exist
- When two Arudhas fall in the same house, they compete — one gives results at a time, not both simultaneously
- The Dasha lord determines which Arudha is more active at a given time
- Example: When UL (Arudha of 7th = marriage) and A6 (Arudha of 6th = obstacles, celibacy) are in the same house:
- 6th house = celibacy house (12th from 7th — it destroys the 7th)
- One must compromise for the other; both cannot fully manifest at once
- "Either you enhance your image or you save your marriage — that's what AL+UL together means"
Arudha Lagna (AL) = Image and Manifestation
- AL = Arudha of 1st house = how the person actually comes across to the world; their outer image
- AL is the most important Arudha (Maharshi Parashara's statement)
- AL determines what others see of you — your public face, reputation, how you "rise" in the world
Specific Arudhas and Their Meanings
| Arudha | House | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| AL (A1) | 1st | Self-image, public reputation, overall worldly manifestation |
| A2 | 2nd | Family, wealth manifestation, resources in the outer world |
| A3 | 3rd | Communication, writing, courage, entrepreneurial energy |
| A4 | 4th | Mother, home, comfort as it manifests in the world |
| A6 | 6th | Obstacles, enemies, disease circumstances; also celibacy |
| A7 / UL | 7th | Marriage partner, spouse image; Upapada Lagna |
| A9 | 9th | Father, fortune, dharma as it manifests |
| A10 | 10th | Rajya Pada — how one rises in career/status; fame |
A3 in Lagna
- Person will be focused on communication
- Entrepreneurial, energetic nature (Mars energy through 3rd house)
- If A3 is in a specific sign, the sign colors the communication style
- Example (PVNR's chart): A3 in Virgo lagna → communication has Virgo's quality:
- Virgo = natural 6th sign = service orientation
- Virgo = intellectual, analytical, perfectionist
- "He wants things to be very correct. Even in casual conversation, he will say — 'No, this is actually this, not that.'"
- Virgo people strive for perfection even with themselves; they point out faults not from meanness but from the drive to be correct
A9 in 7th House
- Fortune rises after marriage — the person's luck improves significantly after they marry
- The Bhagya Arudha (manifestation of fortune) in the marriage house = destiny triggered through partnership
A10 — Rajya Pada
- A10 = Arudha of 10th house = how one's karma and status manifests
- "Rajya" = kingdom, status; the person will rise to some kind of prominence or fame
- Fame must be judged by Desh-Kaala-Patra (place, time, context):
- Example: A man from a farming village who became an engineer and moved to the US — he is "famous" in his village context even if not globally famous
- A10 in lagna = action-oriented, karma-driven person; actions define who they are
A4 + A9 Together
- If A4 (mother's Arudha) and A9 (father's Arudha) fall in the same house → the destinies of both parents are closely linked
- What happens to the father will be felt by the mother and vice versa
- This is not always the case — some charts show parents with completely separate destinies:
- Example: Aquarius rising with Venus = 4th and 9th lord → Venus rules both parents, yet they may have separate destinies
- A4 and A9 in same sign = fates truly intertwined
Badhakesha — The Mental Obstacle-Maker
Definition
- Badhakesha = lord of the Badhaka house = the troublemaker in a chart
- The Badhaka house depends on the lagna sign type:
- Movable (chara) signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) → Badhaka = 11th house lord
- Fixed (sthira) signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) → Badhaka = 9th house lord
- Dual (dvisvabhava) signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) → Badhaka = 7th house lord
How Badhakesha Works
- Works at the mental level — influences thought process, not directly visible causes
- Creates inexplicable obstacles: "You cannot trace why it went wrong"
- Person looks back and thinks: "Why did I do that? I shouldn't have made that decision"
- The planet's nature shows what area the obstacles come through:
- Mercury as Badhakesha → communication issues; unclear thinking when communicating
- Saturn as Badhakesha → delays, deep pessimism, fears
- Mars as Badhakesha → impulsive decisions, aggression as self-sabotage
Badhakesha + Atmakaraka
- If the Badhakesha also happens to be the Atmakaraka → the obstacle is from past life karma
- It is something deep, karmic, and has a soul-level connection
- Teacher (in this class) mentioned: "In my case the badhakesha is also atmakaraka — these are unseen forces with past life association"
Badhakesha + 6th House
- Badhakesha associated with the 6th house or 6th lord → problems with black magic
- The 6th house connection makes the invisible obstacles manifest as malevolent forces
Graha Arudha (L-numbers) — Relationship Indicators
What Graha Arudha Shows
- Graha Arudha = Arudha of a specific planet (not of a house)
- Shows the relationship between the native and people represented by that planet/sign
- Specifically: how people of a certain Rasi (sign) are disposed toward you, and how you get along with them
Examples
-
Graha Arudha of Mars (in Aries) falls in 9th house:
- People with Aries lagna will be authoritative guides to the native
- They give clear-cut, commanding guidance: "Do this, do that" — like a military officer
- Mars = authoritative, commanding; 9th house = guidance and wisdom
-
Graha Arudha of Sun (in Leo) falls in 9th house:
- People with Leo lagna will be fatherly guides — warm, royal, protective
- Sun = father energy; 9th = guidance; Leo + Sun = fatherly authority
-
Graha Arudha of Jupiter in Aries in 9th house:
- Jupiter = wisdom, teaching; 9th = dharma; such people guide with wisdom and spirituality
- They would protect and guide like a guru
Important Limitation
- Graha Arudha is still a relatively unexplored area
- The teacher (substitute) acknowledged limited knowledge: "You can still make do without graha arudha for now"
- Recommended testing in various charts before relying on it heavily
