Education & Scholarly Achievement — D24 Siddhamsa
The D24 (Siddhamsa) chart for learning and scholarship. Three full case studies: Pandit Sanjay Rath (Gajakesari in D24 Lagna — master scholar), Sri Aurobindo (Sun in Simhasana amsha — soul-force), and Kanchi Paramacharya (Jupiter in 9H of D24 — traditional dharmic scholarship).
"If you see Shani and Rahu in somebody's 4th house in Rasi, that means at the physical level he does not have comfort. But WHY? — you have to go to the corresponding divisional chart to find out."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Chart Example 1 — Pandit Sanjay Rath's D-24 (Siddhamsa)
Birth data: Male, 7 Aug 1963, 9:15:40 PM, 83°E58, 21°N27 (Puri, Orissa)
Analysis: Is This Person Intelligent?
Lagna: Gemini. Lagna lord = Mercury. Mercury is in Lagna = in his own house (Gemini). Being in own house = extremely strong. Being in Lagna (Kendra + Trikona) = maximally well-placed.
5th House lord (ability): Libra is the 5th house. Lord = Venus. Venus is also in Lagna with Mercury. Venus is in Mercury's sign (a friend's house), and the friend himself is present → double comfort.
— PVNR"If you are at a friend's house, you are relaxed and comfortable. If your friend is also there, it's even better."
Conclusion: Extremely intelligent person. Mercury and Venus — the two planets of intelligence and learning — are both powerfully placed in Lagna.
Raj Yogas
Mercury owns: 1H (Gemini) and 4H (Virgo) — two Kendras Venus owns: 5H (Libra) and 12H (Pisces)
Raj Yoga 1: 1H lord + 5H lord together = Kendra lord + Trikona lord conjunction
Raj Yoga 2: 4H lord + 5H lord together = Another Kendra + Trikona conjunction
— PVNR"Different Raj Yogas have different sub-themes. When 4th and 5th lords conjoin, that shows Vishnu's blessings." Since this is D-24, it means: this person has Vishnu's blessings specifically in learning.
Maharaj Yoga (per Parasara): When the 1H lord and 5H lord are together — especially when they're in the 1H or 5H — this is called a Maharaj Yoga (not just Raj Yoga). The person will have excellent, great following.
— PVNR"1st house shows you, 5th house shows your followers. Their conjunction means following and existence merge — the native will attract immense following."
This Maharaj Yoga is in Lagna itself = the strongest possible form. In the context of D-24: he will have great following in the field of knowledge/teaching.
10th House — Karma in Learning
- 10H in D-24 = house of activities in society related to learning/teaching
- Jupiter is in Pisces (10H) = Jupiter's own sign AND Moolatrikona
-
— PVNR
"Meena is the house of Maharshis"
- Jupiter in Meena = his karma in society is spreading the knowledge of the Maharshis (Vedic knowledge)
- Strong 10H → he will spread knowledge widely, not keep it to himself
Argala of Mercury + Venus on 10H:
- Count 4 houses from 10H → arrives at Lagna (Gemini) where Me + Ve are = 4H Argala on 10H
- Virudhargala (to break this): count 4H in reverse from 10H = Capricorn (7H) → no planets there
- → Argala stands unbroken
- → Whatever intelligence and following he has, it decisively and forcibly manifests in his karma (in society)
9th House — Guru and Guidance
- 9H in D-24 = the guidance received from one's Guru
- 9H = Aquarius (Kumbha). Lord = Saturn
- Saturn is in Aries (11H)
- Saturn = Kurmavatara (the Tortoise incarnation) — very slow, very traditional, hates deviation from the established path
Saturn's aspect on Lagna:
- Saturn's Graha Drishti: he aspects the 3rd house from himself
- From 11H (Aries), count 1→2→3 = Gemini = Lagna
- → Saturn desires to influence Lagna → His Guru had a strong desire to pass this knowledge to Sanjay Ji
Argala on 9H (Aquarius):
- 2H from 9H = Capricorn. Is Jupiter there? Jupiter is in Pisces (10H in chart). 2H from Aq = Pisces. Wait: from Aquarius, 2H forward = Pisces = where Jupiter is. Jupiter has 2H Argala on 9H.
- 4H from 9H = Taurus = where Mars is. Mars has 4H Argala on 9H (enthusiasm, initiative).
- 5H from 9H = Gemini = where Me + Ve are. Secondary 5H Argala from Mercury and Venus.
- Critical Argala — 3H Malefic Argala: Count 3 houses from 9H = Aries (11H in chart) = where Saturn + Rahu + Ketu are. Three malefics. Parasara's rule: if 2 or more malefics are in the 3rd house from a reference house, they also provide an Argala on that house — a motivating Argala (initiative, burning drive). Three malefics = exceptionally strong.
- → The Guru (Saturn) himself pushed Sanjay Ji intensely, with great urgency to learn
Historical context:
- First guru: Grandfather Pandit Yagnanath Rath (not much direct learning)
- Second guru: Uncle Pandit Kashinath Rath — very strict, traditional, a great Jyotisha scholar
- Kashinath's children and Sanjay Ji's two brothers did NOT pick up this knowledge
- Sanjay Ji was the ONLY one who inherited it — the link was very thin (just one person)
- Hence Saturn's intense "desire" visible in the chart — the lineage could have been lost
- That knowledge traveled: Kashinathji → Sanjay Ji → PVNR → now many students
Graha Malika Yoga
A Graha Malika Yoga occurs when at least 4 consecutive houses each contain one or more of the 7 planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — Rahu/Ketu excluded).
Here:
- 10H (Pisces): Jupiter
- 11H (Aries): Saturn, Rahu, Ketu → Saturn counts (Ra/Ke don't, but Sa does)
- 12H (Taurus): Mars
- 1H (Gemini): Mercury, Venus
→ Jupiter (10H) → Saturn (11H) → Mars (12H) → Mercury+Venus (1H) = 4 consecutive houses = Graha Malika Yoga
Reading the yoga:
- Initiates from Jupiter in Pisces (Meena = house of Maharshis, showing Sattvic karma = spreading Vedic/Maharshi knowledge)
- Culminates in the Maharaj Yoga of Mercury + Venus in Lagna (great following)
- → Once he starts the karma (spreading Vedic knowledge), the Maharaj Yoga of great following gets triggered
Historical context: When Sanjay Ji resigned from his IAS position and went into Jyotisha full-time, he triggered this yoga. SJC (Sri Jagannatha Centre) began small — but this Graha Malika Yoga indicates it will grow to great following.
— PVNR"Even though Sri Jagannatha Centre is in very initial stages, one day it will be a big organization with great following and also with great contributions to reviving this knowledge."
Chart Example 2 — Sri Aurobindo's D-24 (Siddhamsa)
Birth data: 15 Aug 1872, 5:08 AM (5:53:23 LMT), 88°E22, 22°N32 (Calcutta)
Analysis: Lagna Strength
- Lagna = Capricorn. Lagna lord = Saturn
- Saturn is in Aquarius (2H) = Moolatrikona for Saturn (Aquarius 0°–20° is Saturn's Moolatrikona)
- Being in Moolatrikona is stronger than being in own sign (Capricorn)
- → Lagna lord is extremely strong → person himself is supremely strong in learning
Multiple Raj Yogas in 2nd House
Who is in 2H? Mercury, Venus, Saturn — all together.
Ownership analysis:
- Saturn = 1H lord (Capricorn) + 2H lord (Aquarius, Moolatrikona)
- Venus = 5H lord (Taurus, from Capricorn lagna) + 10H lord (Libra)
- Mercury = 6H lord (Gemini) + 9H lord (Virgo)
Venus = Yogakaraka for Capricorn Lagna:
— PVNRIf the same planet owns both a Trikona AND a Kendra, it is called a Yogakaraka (the planet of yoga-making).
- For Capricorn and Aquarius Lagna: Venus owns 5H (Taurus = Trikona) + 10H (Libra = Kendra) → Venus = Yogakaraka
- For Cancer and Leo Lagna: Mars owns 5H (Scorpio) + 10H (Aries) → Mars = Yogakaraka
The Yogakaraka planet alone, by its placement and conjunction, creates Raj Yoga.
Raj Yogas from 2H conjunction:
| Combination | Yoga |
|---|---|
| Saturn (1H lord) + Venus (5H lord) | 1H + 5H lord = Raj Yoga → great following |
| Saturn (1H lord) + Mercury (9H lord) | 1H + 9H lord = Raj Yoga |
| Venus (5H lord) + Mercury (9H lord) | 5H + 9H lords together + strong LL = Maha Raj Yoga |
| Mercury (9H lord) + Venus (10H lord) | Dharma-Karma-Adhipati Yoga (9H+10H lord together) |
| Saturn (1H lord) + Venus (10H lord) | 1H + 10H = Raj Yoga |
— PVNRMaha Raj Yoga (per Parasara): When the 5th and 9th lord are together — both are Trikonas, not Kendras — this is still a Maha Raj Yoga, PROVIDED the Lagna lord is strong. Here LL Saturn is in Moolatrikona = extremely strong → conditions met.
All three planets are friends (Mercury, Venus, Saturn): Raj Yogas between friends are far more effective than those between enemies (like Sun-Saturn).
Result of 2H Raj Yogas: 2H = House of resources AND speech
- Multiple Raj Yogas in 2H → supremely intelligent AND a great orator
- Mercury (natural karaka of speech) owns 2H → absolute command over speech
- Jupiter in 12H (Sagittarius) has 9th-house aspect on 8H (Leo) → affects the sadhana house
- → "When he speaks, things become so clear. His speech is full of intelligence and wisdom."
8th House — Occult Knowledge and Sadhana
- 8H = Leo. Contains Sun, Rahu, Ketu.
- 8H = house of hidden knowledge, tapasya, sadhana, research into the occult
- Rahu in 8H: Rahu = searching for what is hidden; going beyond the boundaries of what is known
- Under bad influence: Rahu makes a rebel who disrespects tradition
- Under good influence: Rahu drives deep research into the unknown, abstract thinking
- In D-24 (learning chart), Rahu in 8H = great researcher of hidden Vedic truths
- Ketu in 8H: Ketu = spirituality, detachment. In D-24, Ketu in 8H = spiritual learning, Moksha-oriented knowledge
- Sun in 8H: Sun = natural Atmakaraka (significator of soul). In Moksha Trikona (4, 8, 12) = Sun is comfortable with sadhana. Even though Rahu/Ketu are Sun's enemies, in the context of sadhana (8H = Moksha Trikona), Sun goes along with this activity.
- Jupiter's aspect on 8H: From Sagittarius (12H), Jupiter's 9th aspect reaches Leo (8H). Jupiter's wisdom and grace pour into the sadhana house.
- → "This person is somebody who investigates the truth of the universe. Where people like us are happy, he is not happy, and he works hard to find and understand better."
12th House — Gajakesari Yoga and Moksha in Learning
- 12H = Sagittarius. Contains Moon and Jupiter.
- 12H in D-24 = Moksha in learning = being so learned that there is nothing more to be learned; complete satisfaction in knowledge; no more drive to understand further
Gajakesari Yoga:
- Occurs when: Moon and Jupiter are together OR in mutual quadrants (from Moon, Jupiter in 1/4/7/10)
- Being together = strongest form
- Being opposite (7th from each other) = second strongest
- Being in 4th or 10th from each other = third/fourth strongest
- Result: Great fame (not necessarily material wealth or kingship — but people everywhere know this person)
Here: Moon and Jupiter are together in 12H → strongest Gajakesari → great fame in the context of learning.
— PVNR"In the matter of learning, moksha means being totally happy with your knowledge. Whatever you wanted to understand, you understood it all so well that you are just relaxed."
Vaiseshika Amsas — Planetary Strength Across 16 Vargas
This is the system of measuring a planet's quality across all 16 divisional charts simultaneously.
Method: For a given planet, look at all 16 Shodasha Varga charts. Count how many of those 16 charts show the planet in:
- Own sign (Swarasi)
- Moolatrikona
- Exalted sign (Uccha)
These are the 3 auspicious placements (3 out of 12 signs ≈ 1/4 probability per chart).
| Count | Name | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | — | Basic |
| 2 | Parijatamsa | Very good |
| 5 | Simhasanamsa | Exceptional (probability ≈ 1/1024 ≈ 1/1000) |
| 7 | Devalokamsa | Extremely rare |
| 16 | Sridhamamsa | Essentially impossible for any mortal; the rarest designation |
— PVNR"This gentleman has Sun [natural Atmakaraka] in Simhasanamsa — out of this world. You don't get people like that every 100 or 1000 years."
Sri Aurobindo's Sun is in Simhasanamsa in his chart = his soul and atma-force are among the rarest ever to incarnate.
Sri Aurobindo — Historical Context
- Born in Calcutta to a father who hated India and wanted his son completely European
- Sent to England; lived with a Christian priest; given strict orders: no contact with Indians, no exposure to Indian culture
- Became fluent in 6 European languages; all European professors amazed by his intelligence
- Wrote the IAS exam but dropped it midway (due to a disagreement)
- When he returned to India — "the moment he landed, he felt something"
- Within a short time, he learned Bengali and Sanskrit — not just conversationally, but at the level of a great scholar
- Wrote commentaries on Vedas and Upanishads deeper than people who had studied them since childhood
- Wrote Savitri — considered one of the most profound spiritual poems in any language
- While in jail (for nationalist activity), he reportedly had visions of Lord Krishna teaching him
- His associate, Mira Alfassa ("The Mother"), is worshipped as a goddess manifestation of Shakti in Pondicherry
Atmakaraka Change (Introduced Here)
— PVNR"Apart from Dasha changes, there is something known as Atmakaraka — the significator of one's soul — which changes from person to person. And for some people, this chara-Atmakaraka (variable soul significator) changes at a later point in life. That really triggered everything for Aurobindo."
- Natural Atmakaraka: Sun (for everyone)
- Chara Atmakaraka: The planet with the highest degree in the natal chart; this is specific to each person
- For some people, the Chara Atmakaraka shifts/transforms at a pivotal life moment
- Aurobindo went through such an Atmakaraka change when he returned to India
- This soul-level transformation exceeded even the Dasha in triggering his spiritual awakening
→ To be covered in detail in future classes (Chara Karakas, Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka, etc.)
Chart Example 3 — Swami Chandrashekhara Saraswati — D-1 (Rasi)
Birth data: 20 May 1894, 1:22 PM, 79°E32, 11°N57 (Villupuram, Tamil Nadu) (The 68th Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham — revered as Mahaperiyavar / Paramacharya)
First Impressions
Standout houses:
- 2H–8H axis: 4 planets across these two opposite houses (Sa, Ke in 2H; Ve, Ra in 8H)
- 10H: 3 planets (Me, Su, Ju) — a powerful congregation
— PVNR"When you see a chart without a specific query, look at what really stares at you, what really stands out. That will be a good starting point."
Lagna (Leo)
- Appearance and nature: Leo lagna = a majestic and royal person
- Not bold/aggressive (that's Mars) — but authoritative, kingly, radiating (that's Sun/Leo)
-
— PVNR
"When you see him, you basically get respect."
- Majestic bearing, people instinctively show deference
10th House — Raj Yoga + Karma
Sun = Lagna lord (Leo = 1H). Sun is in Taurus (10H) — a Kendra. Jupiter = 5th lord (Sagittarius = 5H from Leo lagna). Jupiter is in Taurus (10H) — also a Kendra.
Raj Yoga: 1H lord (Sun) + 5H lord (Jupiter) together in 10H = 1H + 5H lord conjunction
- Result: Great following
- Being in a Kendra (10H) = effort → following comes through active karma in the world
- "1st house is the native, 5th house is the followers. Their conjunction = great following."
Mercury = 2H lord (Virgo) + 11H lord (Gemini). Mercury is also in 10H.
- 2H = house of resources AND speech
- Mercury = natural karaka of speech
- → Will be a great public speaker; resources for speech command are with him
Jupiter as secondary speech karaka:
- Jupiter = wisdom; when Jupiter influences speech (2H), the speech is filled with wisdom
- Jupiter's 5th Graha Drishti from Taurus: counts 1=Ta, 2=Ge, 3=Ca, 4=Le, 5=Vi. So Ju aspects Virgo (2H) = house of speech
- → "When he speaks, people listen. His speech carries great wisdom."
Moon in 4th House (Debilitated)
Moon = debilitated in Scorpio (4H). Three aspects to understand:
1. Moon's agenda:
- Moon is 12H lord (Cancer = 12H from Leo lagna) sitting in 4H
- 12H = house of giving/Moksha. 4H = house of comfort/happiness
- → "Giving gives him happiness" — he is a natural giver who finds joy in generosity, not in accumulation
2. Moon's Graha Drishti on 10H:
- From 4H (Scorpio), Moon's 7th aspect = Taurus = 10H
- → His karma in society is driven by Moon's desire to give
- → "All his social activities are guided by the concept of giving and being happy about it"
3. Gajakesari Yoga:
- Moon in 4H (Scorpio), Jupiter in 10H (Taurus) — they are opposite each other (mutual 7th)
- This is the second strongest Gajakesari Yoga (after being together)
- Result: Great fame — people far and wide know and revere this person
Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga — Detailed Explanation
Moon is in Neecha (debilitated) in Scorpio. This does not mean the situation is simply bad.
Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga: Occurs when a debilitated planet's neecha is "cancelled" by certain conditions:
- Basic flavor here: The owner of the sign where the planet is debilitated is in a Kendra
Applying here:
- Moon is in Scorpio (Vrishchika)
- Owner of Scorpio = Mars
- Mars is in Aquarius (7H) = a Kendra (Vishnu Sthana)
- → Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga confirmed
Meaning/Philosophy:
- Exalted planet = proud, excited — like a student who is very confident before an exam; that pride can lead to carelessness
- Debilitated planet = not fully satisfied, still working hard — like a student who thinks "I still need to read more, I'm not ready"
- But if the owner of that sign is in a Kendra = there is effort (Vishnu Sthana) going on
- → Even though the planet is not fully satisfied, because effort is happening, it WILL be satisfied
- → Better than just being exalted without effort
— PVNR"Not only is this planet not fully satisfied, but Mars, who holds the keys to this house, is in a Vishnu Sthana — there is effort going on. So because there is effort, it will be satisfied."
Timing: The yoga is triggered by Mars (the planet causing Neecha Bhanga), not by Moon. When Mars Dasha/transit activates this, the transformation occurs.
Once triggered: Remains effective for the entire life (standard Parashari view).
In this chart's context:
- Moon debilitated in 4H = "he gives and is happy, but is never FULLY satisfied"
- This is actually the driver that keeps him pushing further, giving more
- Once triggered: complete contentment and recognition
Tapasvi Yoga — Detailed Explanation
Combination: Venus + Saturn + Ketu are together, in mutual trines, or opposite each other.
Here:
- Saturn + Ketu are in Virgo (2H)
- Venus (exalted) + Rahu are in Pisces (8H)
- 2H (Virgo) and 8H (Pisces) are opposite (mutual 7th)
- → Saturn-Ketu-Venus are in mutual opposition = Tapasvi Yoga
Why these three planets?
| Planet | Contribution to Tapasya |
|---|---|
| Ketu | Detachment — does tapasya without caring about material results; renounces the fruit |
| Saturn | Endurance — ability to work hard for long periods; keep austerities; not a "just do it now" planet but a "keep going for years" planet |
| Venus | Passion and rapture — the pleasure/excitement that comes from doing the tapasya itself; what motivates you to continue |
— PVNR"Tap = to burn. Tapasya = burning with desire to achieve something — whether moksha, understanding, reaching Shiva, or understanding this knowledge."
— PVNR"Mars gives initiative-based determination for short tasks. Saturn gives endurance-based determination for long-term austerity."
Why Tapasvi Yoga is especially powerful in Moksha Trikonas:
| House | Nature |
|---|---|
| 4H | Seed of Moksha Trikona — happiness, comfort |
| 8H | Middle of Moksha Trikona — Sadhana, Siddhi, tapasya itself |
| 12H | Culmination — Moksha, final liberation |
8H is more important than 12H for Tapasvi Yoga because 8H = the actual practice of sadhana, while 12H = the result (liberation). Tapasvi Yoga in 8H = the sadhana is at the maximum level.
— PVNR"8H and 12H are dusthanas (bad houses) for material purposes — but for Moksha and sadhana, they are very auspicious."
This Tapasvi Yoga occurs in 8H (Pisces) — maximally powerful.
Argala of Tapasvi Yoga on 10H
Does the Tapasvi Yoga affect his karma in society (10H = Taurus)?
From 10H (Taurus), count forward:
- 11H from 10H = Pisces (8H in the chart) = where Venus + Rahu are → 11H Argala on 10H ✓
- 5H from 10H = Virgo (2H in the chart) = where Saturn + Ketu are → secondary 5H Argala on 10H ✓
→ All three Tapasvi Yoga planets have Argala on the 10H of Karma
→ "Whatever tapasya he is doing, whatever sadhana he is doing, that benefits the society through his karma. His karma transfers the results of sadhana to the people around him."
Historical Context — Swami Chandrashekhara Saraswati
- Known as Mahaperiyavar ("The Great Elder") / Paramacharya
- 68th Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham (one of the oldest and most prestigious Advaita Vedanta institutions)
- Famous for: extraordinary tapasya, deep Vedic learning, vast following across India
- Great orator: his talks on dharma drew millions; spoke with profound wisdom
- Known as a "giver" — never accumulated anything; gave constantly
- Performed intense austerities throughout his 100-year life
- Considered by many to be a living saint, a Jivanmukta
The Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham's Panchanga (almanac) uses the Chitrapaksha Ayanamsa (Lahiri) — this was noted by PVNR in Lesson 5 as well.
