Arudha Calculation — Longitude Debate

Student's question: with these houses, what happens to the Arudhas?

The teacher says he will give his view later. Sanjay Rath taught him two ways and told him to find out which works better; he has programmed both and is not yet sure.

1. Sign-based: take the sign at the start of the bhava, see where its lord is, count the signs, count as many again. The Arudha is the same as now. The Arudha Lagna has no longitude of its own, so for houses counted from it, it is given lagna's longitude.
2. Longitude-based: take the exact distance in longitude from lagna to its lord and add the same distance to the lord. The Arudha gets an exact longitude.

Santhanam's BPHS says "count the rasis"; other versions are said to read "count the houses".

Worked example (the chart on screen):

• Lagna 8°47' Aquarius; take Saturn as lagna lord, at 29°03' Leo. By sign he is in the 7th.
• Distance lagna → Saturn ≈ 180° + 20° = 200°.
• Saturn + 200° ≈ 19° Pisces.
• The 1st house is 8°47' Aquarius to 8°47' Pisces, so 19° Pisces is in the 2nd house. It is not in the 1st or 7th, so no exception applies and nothing is moved to the 10th or 4th.
• Arudha Lagna = about 19° Pisces. Houses from AL are counted in 30° steps from that point.

What changes:

• Sign-based, the Arudha of a house can fall only in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th from it, plus the 4th and 10th through the exceptions. So AL and A7 in ṣaṣṭāṣṭaka (6/8) is almost ruled out, though śāstra gives results for it.
• Longitude-based, the Arudha can be up to 30° either side, so it can fall in any house. AL and A7 in 6/8 stops being rare. Here the lagna lord is in the 7th and AL still came in the 2nd house.

"You can experiment with some charts and see which one fits the image better and which one explains the life, the dashas… and I will give my view a little later."

Gayatri Attachment — Astrological Indicators

A student has read that a person whose rasi chart and bhava chart are the same has the blessings of Gayatri.

• No basis. The two charts show different things and cannot be "the same". All it could mean is that every planet is above lagna in degrees, and that means nothing. He knows people with deep experience of Gayatri whose bhava chart differs.

"Keep doing Gayatri even if your Bhava chart is different from Rasi chart."

What to look for instead:

The teacher's own chart: Sun in the 7th, the only planet with full aspect on lagna. Lagna in Hasta. Jupiter in the 2nd and Ketu in the 12th hem in the lagna, "as though Jupiter and Ketu are in my lagna", so they act on the intellect. Whatever homa he does, at the pūrṇāhuti he goes back to Gayatri.

Swami Vivekananda: Gayatri was his favourite mantra. Dhanus lagna with Sun in lagna; Moon in Hasta. In his case Hasta works on the mind, in the teacher's on the intellect.

Remedies

For the example chart of this class: Taurus lagna, the 4th lord Sun at the start of Leo with Ketu, the lagna lord Venus debilitated.

For Sun — in gaṇḍānta, weak, afflicted by Ketu:

• The mantra's grammar: most mantras put the deity in a case — to, for, of. "Hare Rama, Hare Krishna" is in the vocative (sambodhana): you call on the deity as someone apart from you. This mantra is in the plain nominative (prathamā vibhakti): it only declares "Sun".
• The lamp, for someone who will not chant:

"Just light a candle, a deepam, sit in front of the deepam and keep looking at it. That is strengthening the Sun inside you."

Stare at the flame as long as possible without blinking, and think of God in whatever terms he does these days.

No ruby. A student asks whether Sun is a functional benefic. Sun owns the 4th: for a natural malefic a kendra is a neutral house. He is neutral or malefic, not a benefic, and he is in gaṇḍānta.

"Angering somebody in gaṇḍānta by wearing a gem is not a great idea. So do not wear a gem; propitiate him."

Do not ask the one in gaṇḍānta to "come and sit on my lap".

Gomedha for Rahu? Rahu is 10th lord in the 10th, in rasi with Moon but at the opposite end of the sign. A natural malefic owning a kendra is neutral. "I wouldn't really say don't wear it, but I wouldn't really recommend" it.

Diamond for Venus: yes. The chart has two major weaknesses: Sun in gaṇḍānta (he calls Sun the ātmakāraka; by degrees the chara ātmakāraka in the cast chart is Moon) and the lagna lord debilitated. The second can be addressed with a gem. Neecha bhanga is there, but the overall personality is weak and a diamond strengthens it. It may not do much for education.
