D-12 ND — Relationship with Parents

What the Default D-12 ND Shows

The D-12 daśā found from the 12th lord of the rāśi chart shows the native's relationship with her parents: when she is happy or sad about them, when she speaks to them nicely, when she is separated from them.

"This D-12 Narayana Daśā is for seeing how her relationship with parents will be, how her emotions relating to parents will be."

It is not for seeing what happens to the father or the mother — their Rāja Yogas, their health. That needs a different daśā (Parts 9 and 10).

• It is the progression of the 12th lord: the intelligence applied to give-and-take, to compromise. "Compromise" here is another word for relationship.

How It Is Found (This Chart)

1. 12th lord of the rāśi chart = Mercury.
2. In D-12 Mercury is in Libra, which is also the D-12 lagna.
3. Libra (Mercury, Saturn) is stronger than Aries (Moon). The daśās start from Libra.

The D-12

Lagna Libra with Mercury and Saturn. Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn (4th). Ketu in Aquarius (5th). Moon in Aries (7th). Sun in Gemini (9th). Venus in Cancer (10th). Mars and Rāhu in Leo (11th).

Capricorn Daśā — Friction

• Capricorn is the 4th house: sukha, comfort — here comfort in living with the parents.
• Jupiter, 3rd and 6th lord, sits there debilitated. The 6th is quarrels and arguments. Weak as he is, he afflicts the 4th.
• 6th or 8th lord in the 4th → suspect lack of comfort.
• Capricorn is Pṛṣṭhodaya → the sign gives in the last third.
• Lord Saturn is in Libra, Śīrṣodaya → first third. 4th lord exalted in lagna: not bad at all.
• Middle third, January 1991 – May 1992 (16 months): occupant Jupiter, and Mars and Rāhu, who aspect Capricorn from Leo by rāśi dṛṣṭi. Jupiter's share is one third of it, and that is where the trouble peaks; but the aspects of Mars and Rāhu on the 4th are not good either, so the whole 16 months is slightly bad.
• What happened (he was not fully sure of the dates): towards the end of her engineering degree there was friction over what she would do next. She wanted to do a master's; the parents said no. She wanted to work away from home; they wanted her close by. The friction was mainly with her mother.

Taurus Daśā — Running at the Time of the Class

• Taurus is the 8th house: separation, or anxiety about the parents — not necessarily a quarrel. For Libra the lagna and the 8th have the same lord, so Taurus is not such a bad 8th house.
• A 2-year daśā from September 2004.
• Sign Pṛṣṭhodaya, and lord Venus in Cancer also Pṛṣṭhodaya → the sign takes the last third, the lord the middle, and occupants and aspectors the first third: September 2004 – May 2005.
• Aspecting Taurus by rāśi dṛṣṭi: Venus (Cancer), Saturn and Mercury (Libra), Jupiter (Capricorn). Order by longitude: Venus → Saturn → Mercury → Jupiter, two months each.
• Venus is lagna lord: a lagna lord gives a new beginning, here in relations with parents — she visits them or they visit her. He is also the 8th lord aspecting the 8th, which gives results like Sarala Yoga: it can be the end of a separation.
• Saturn is yogakāraka, Mercury the 9th lord, Venus the lagna lord: September 11 to March 9 is a very good period.
• Jupiter, the 6th lord, comes last: separation.
• What happened: her parents came to stay with her in mid-October and were leaving on the day of the class, at the start of Jupiter's share.

"The deeper you go, it has a better chance of collapsing. When you are looking at a high level, it will work very nicely."

Three D-12 Narayana Daśās

D-12 ND — Fortune of Mother (Separate ND)

To see what happens to the mother, a different D-12 Narayana Daśā is needed. The software does not list it, but its options produce it.

How to Set It Up

1. The 4th house is the mother. In D-12 the 4th from lagna is Capricorn.
2. Take the stronger of the 4th and its 7th — Capricorn or Cancer. The software's strength list says Capricorn.
3. In the options select D-12 and, under "Start daśā from", enter that sign in place of "use the default". (The default takes the 12th lord and gives the relationship daśā.)
4. Read the D-12 with that sign as the mother's lagna. Houses are counted from it, not from the native's lagna. The daśā starts at the native's birth.

A parent seen through the child's D-12 does not read perfectly:

"Using this, we can't get 100% readings. We can get maybe a 70% general idea of the person's health and life."

The Mother's Daśās (Capricorn as Lagna)

• Virgo daśā (to September 2004) = 9th house: fortune and long-distance travel. She is a housewife. What happened: she travelled abroad to visit her daughter four times in this daśā.
• Trouble inside Virgo: the sign is the 9th house and its lord Mercury is well placed. The problem is Sun's aspect — Sun is in Gemini, the 6th, and aspects Virgo by rāśi dṛṣṭi; he is the 8th lord from Capricorn. Virgo also holds a Mṛtyupada. An 8th lord's aspect on a sign shows accident, anxiety, serious health problems.
  • Virgo is Śīrṣodaya → sign first. Mercury is in Libra, Śīrṣodaya → lord second. Aspector last. Sun is alone, so he has the whole last third — four years.
  • The four quarters apply to an aspecting planet too, when the period is long enough to be worth it. Sun is a malefic: avasthā → yoga → lordship → occupation. The third quarter, 2002–2003, is the 8th-lordship quarter and the period of most concern.
  • What happened: around then she had a couple of accidents one after another, and once broke her ankle. The whole third was a testing time. She was doing the Mṛtyuñjaya mantra on his advice, and still there was one problem or another.
• Leo daśā (running at the time of the class) = 8th house with Mars and Rāhu: she must take care of her health until it ends.
• Cancer daśā = 7th house with Venus, the yogakāraka for Capricorn: good.
• Libra daśā = 10th house with lagna lord Saturn: good.

Sun and Bones

• When Sun gives a health problem, expect either excess fire in the body (pitta) or the dhātu he rules.
• Moon = blood (rakta). Jupiter = fat. Sun = bones.

"When you see Sun giving a problem in a chart, you can suspect that there can be some problem with bones, breaking of bones or something."

Peaks, Not Compartments

Sun in the 6th aspecting Virgo, Sun as 8th lord aspecting Virgo, Sun in a neutral sign aspecting Virgo — all of these are felt through the whole third. Each one peaks in its own quarter. Use the quarter when you are timing a single event such as a marriage or a hospitalisation.

D-12 ND — Fortune of Father (Separate ND)

How to Set It Up

1. The 9th house is the father. In D-12 the 9th from lagna is Gemini.
2. Stronger of Gemini and Sagittarius: Gemini holds Sun, Sagittarius is empty → Gemini. When unsure, check the software's strength list.
3. Enter Gemini under "Start daśā from".

So there is not one D-12 Narayana Daśā but several.

Reading the Father from D-12 (Gemini as Lagna)

Before the daśā, the class read the father's nature from the D-12 with the 9th house as lagna.

• Lagna lord Mercury in the 5th → intelligent.
• Mercury with Saturn, the 8th and 9th lord: a Rāja Yoga, but Saturn is also 8th lord → very hard-working.
• Sun in lagna → authoritative.
• Mars and Rāhu in the 3rd → a great deal of initiative; with Rāhu there, stubborn.
• Fact: he came from a poor family, became an electrical engineer and did well, in a government job.

Career — not always the 10th house.

• 10th = what you achieve. 6th = the work you do. 2nd = the resources you command. A career may be defined by any of the three; find the strongest.
• Here: the 10th (Pisces) is empty and its lord Jupiter is debilitated in the 8th. The 2nd has Venus. The 6th (Scorpio) is empty, but its lord Mars aspects it by graha dṛṣṭi, aspects the 10th too, and is with another planet. The 6th lord is much stronger than the 10th lord → read the career from the 6th.
• Mars with Rāhu → engineering with heavy equipment and hardware. He would normally have guessed electronics; the father is an electrical engineer working with transmission and distribution equipment.
• Government service: Jupiter's link is "a very shaky argument". Once Mars is the planet giving the career, Mars in Leo, Sun's sign, can show government.
• Reading a parent's career from D-12 is "very tricky".

A student's Nāḍī-style guess from the rāśi chart — Venus (the lady) with Sun (father, in own sign) and Mercury means the father owns a lot of property — did not hold. Sent to the D-12 for the father.

Capricorn Daśā (from September 12, 2003)

• Capricorn is the 8th from Gemini, and holds the 10th lord Jupiter.
• The 8th house is change of life-style, long-term change. The 3rd and 8th can both give retirement, the 8th above all. 10th lord in the 8th → retirement. This is an 8th-house result, not something in the nature of Capricorn.

3 parts:

• Capricorn Pṛṣṭhodaya → the sign comes last.
• Lord Saturn in Libra, Śīrṣodaya → first third.
• Middle third: Jupiter, Mars and Rāhu.

Who gave the retirement? The class expected Jupiter, the 10th lord in the 8th. In fact it came in the first third, from Saturn — the 8th lord (also 9th lord), exalted in the 5th house of recognition. An exalted 8th lord in the 5th gives a happy retirement, with recognition just before it.

• What happened: he had been waiting for a promotion. In 2004 he got it and then retired on the higher scale, with better retirement benefits.

"We are looking at father's fortune from the daughter's side, so things will not work very perfectly. But the 8th lord is certainly capable of giving a retirement."

Should he start a business now?

• Capricorn holds the 7th lord Jupiter — debilitated, so only "maybe".
• Jupiter's share: the middle third is January 2005 – May 2006, 16 months for three planets. Jupiter is the least advanced, so he comes last: about January – May 2006.
• After that comes the last third: Capricorn itself, the 8th house.
• Father's Ārūḍha Lagna = the native's A9, in Aquarius. Capricorn is the 12th from it: losses.
• 8th from lagna and 12th from AL → material losses and anxiety. Advice: not now; take it easy until 2007.

Leo Daśā (after 2007)

• Leo is the 3rd from Gemini: initiative; also contracts, consulting, temporary work.
• It holds Mars, the 6th lord (overcoming obstacles) and 11th lord (gains), with Rāhu.
• A new beginning in career is possible: consultancy or other independent work.

Narayana Dasha Years — The 0-Year Issue

In the father's D-12 daśā (Part 10), Sagittarius gets 0 years — "not even a day".

How the years come:

• Count from the sign to its lord and subtract 1. Sagittarius to Jupiter in Capricorn = 2; minus 1 = 1 year.
• Parāśara's exception: lord exalted → add 1; lord debilitated → subtract 1. Jupiter is debilitated → 0 years.

The second cycle: each sign gets 12 minus its first-cycle years. 1 → 11, 5 → 7, 10 → 2, 0 → 12, 12 → 0. The two cycles always total 12.

K.N. Rao could not accept a 0-year daśā and dropped Parāśara's exception. He uses Chara Daśā, a subset of this, and finds his results better without the exception.

"When I look at examples, I see that I get much better results, much more consistent results, if I stick to Parāśara. So I stick to Parāśara, and that's what the software does."

A 0-year daśā means only that the sign gives nothing in the first round.
