BPHS Ch.13 — 2nd House Wealth Verses 1–5: 2nd Lord Placement, 2nd–11th Synergy & Extraordinary Wealth Combination

BPHS Dhanabhava — Verses 1–5 (Wealth Combinations)

Chapter 13 in Santhanam's version. Parashara to Maitreya: "Dhanabhava phalam vachmi, shrunu tvam dvijasattama" — I tell you the results of the 2nd house; listen, great brahmin.

Verse 1: 2nd Lord in the 2nd House or a Kendra/Kona → Wealth

"Dhanesho dhanabhavasthah kendra-kona-gato'pi va, dhanavriddhikaro jneyah, trikastho dhanahanikrit"

• Dhanesha = 2nd lord; dhanabhavasthah = in the 2nd house; kendra-kona-gato'pi va = or in a quadrant or trine.
• "va" = or. This is an "or" condition, not "and".

Rule: 2nd lord in the 2nd house, or in a quadrant, or in a trine → dhanavriddhikara, he causes increase of wealth.

Counterpart: 2nd lord in a trika (6th, 8th, 12th) → dhanahanikrit, he causes loss of wealth.

Verse 2: Planets Occupying the 2nd House

"Dhanadashcha dhane saumyah, papo dhanavinashakrit"

• A natural benefic (saumya) in the 2nd house gives good wealth.
• A malefic (papa) in the 2nd house destroys wealth.

Two separate rules:

"As far as occupancy is concerned, look at the nature of the planet, and as far as the lord is concerned, whether he is benefic or malefic, 2nd lord in 2nd is auspicious."

Verse 3: Jupiter and the 2nd House → Wealthy

"Dhanadhipo gurur yasya dhanabhavagato bhavet, bhaumena sahito va'pi, dhanavan sa naro bhavet"

PVNR first read the opening as "Jupiter is the 2nd lord and is in the 2nd house". Then he noticed the va (or) before "with Mars" and concluded that the earlier link is also an "or". So three alternate conditions:

1. Jupiter in the 2nd house
2. Jupiter owning the 2nd house
3. Jupiter with Mars (Bhauma) — Guru-Mangala Yoga

Any one → dhanavan, the person is wealthy.

Why: Jupiter is the dhana karaka, the significator of wealth. A benefic karaka connected to the 2nd house gives wealth.

"This is basically a thumb rule. You cannot rely on this."

Jupiter with Mars: the conjunction alone is enough; it need not have anything to do with the 2nd house.

A student's objection — this contradicts verse 2 (a malefic in the 2nd destroys wealth):

• Mars alone in the 2nd may be bad. Mars in the 2nd with Jupiter: Jupiter is his great friend and the karaka of wealth. He wants to give wealth, and with Mars he gives more.
• The wealth comes the Martian way: real estate, army or military matters, even forcefulness — a real-estate man with goons extorting money. "It may be Martian way, but there will be money."
• If the 2nd house is Aries and Mars is in it, he is the 2nd lord in the 2nd. That is fine even by verse 1; he promotes his own house. With Jupiter it is better still.

Verse 4: 2nd Lord in the 11th, 11th Lord in the 2nd, or Both in Kendra/Kona → Wealthy

"Dhaneshe labhabhavasthe, labheshe va dhanam gate, tav ubhau kendra-konasthau, dhanavan sa naro bhavet"

Three conditions, any one sufficient:

1. 2nd lord in the 11th house, or
2. 11th lord in the 2nd house, or
3. 2nd lord and 11th lord both in quadrants or trines

On condition 3: they need not be together, nor both in kendras. 2nd lord in a kendra and 11th lord in a trine is fine. Both must be fortified.

The logic:

• 2nd house = what you have accumulated. 11th house = gains, what is coming in.
• Contrast: 11th lord in the 12th. He gives a lot, but he must also deliver the 12th house. Millions come in and are spent away.
• The 2nd house does not show spending, investing or losing. It shows accumulating. 11th lord in the 2nd: a lot comes in and it is kept.
• 2nd lord in the 11th: the planet whose agenda is accumulation is put in charge of the income.

"So the planet whose agenda is to accumulate, if he is in charge of the income, of the gains, or if the planet whose agenda is gains, if he is also told to work towards accumulation, there is a certain synergy between the two things."

• Whether or not the person piles up a lot, he links his income to his wealth efficiently. It goes to wealth instead of being wasted.

What "wealth" means here: a student raised Bill Gates and money, and PVNR stopped to define dhana. It is resourcefulness, not currency. Dhanavan = one with abundant resources; "it does not mean he has million dollars in bank." (Full statement in Part 5.)

A student's question — 2nd lord in an upachaya?

• Parashara says nothing specific, so there is no principle from him. It is a natural extension: upachayas show growth, so the wealth is used for some kind of growth.
• 2nd lord in the 10th: the wealth may go into doing karma in the world. "It may or may not mean that I am a wealthy man." As a quadrant, the 10th is already covered by the verse.
• 2nd lord in the 6th: not covered. The wealth has to be used in overcoming obstacles, and by verse 1 (a trika) it is not a good thing. There may be some increase, but with hardship; the person has to fight to keep his wealth.
• 2nd lord in the 11th: wealth accumulates easily.
• So you cannot say "all upachayas", but it is a good way to think.

Verse 5: 2nd Lord in a Kendra + 11th Lord in a Trine from Him + Jupiter/Venus → Great Gains

"Dhaneshe kendra-rashisthe, labheshe tat-trikonage, guru-shukra-yute drishte, dhanalabham udirayet"

All together:

1. 2nd lord in a kendra
2. 11th lord in a trine from the 2nd lord
3. Conjoined or aspected by Jupiter or Venus

→ Predict large financial gains.

Parashara builds on what he said first. Verse 1 already made the 2nd lord in a kendra a wealthy man. This verse refines it, and the two are not alternatives: the first is a basic, high-probability combination many people have; this one is very specific and shows extraordinary wealth.

"Any results given by Parashara, you have to take them with a pinch of salt. You have to realize the probability of the combination. If a combination is highly probable, if every other person has it, it is probably not a combination that will make you like Bill Gates. Whereas, if it is a combination that only 1 in billion have it, maybe it shows something really special."

Mutual placement of planets comes in here for the first time in the chapter.

• Planets in mutual quadrants also support each other, but they have to work towards each other. Quadrants are Narayana sthanas; trines are Lakshmi sthanas.

"Any planet, when it comes to the trines from it, it will just bless them. Whatever karmas the planet is carrying, they will work as blessings as far as the trines from it are concerned."

• A planet in a trine from another supports the other's agenda effortlessly. So 2nd and 11th lords in mutual trine are equivalent to 2nd lord in the 11th or 11th lord in the 2nd, though neither is in the other's house.
• Extension: 2nd and 11th lords in mutual kendra is not bad. It is a lesser degree — they support each other but have to work hard.

A student's caveat — what if the two are enemies?

• It matters. Example: Cancer lagna, 2nd lord Sun and 11th lord Venus are enemies. Even in mutual trine they may not promote each other much.
• But being in mutual trine they have to work, and both are working for the 2nd and 11th houses. Like each other or not, they have to reconcile.
• Take such factors into account "instead of just going by thumb rules and shooting off something that may or may not be right."
