Argala and Virodhargala

What Virodhargala Does

• Argala is an intervention. Virodhargala is not an intervention in the opposite direction. It only cancels the intervention.
• If Saturn's argala on lagna is obstructed, the nature Saturn wanted to promote does not come about. That is all. The nature of the obstructing planet does not take its place.
• How fully: three planets in the 2nd and one in the 12th — it may not fully cancel, and the nature is still influenced by those three. If the virodhargala is as strong or stronger, it nullifies the influence.
• Friendship does not matter in argala. Friendship matters in aspects: two people looking at the same fruit — a friend says "let us share it", an enemy snatches it. Argala is a different thing.

"The purpose of virodhargala is not to have an intervention in the matter. It is to cancel a particular intervention."

Argala on Lagna — the 1926 Chart

Capricorn lagna.

• Jupiter in lagna: intelligent, wise, learned, priestly, respected.
• Ketu has argala on lagna. Ketu is in Sagittarius; counted Ketu's way (in reverse) he is in the 2nd from lagna, not the 12th. Exalted Ketu: very spiritual, optimistic in outlook; a little eccentric or different is secondary. No virodhargala on it.
• Mars in the 4th (Aries) has argala: aggressive, imposing, bold. In a spiritual man this is not picking fights — it is commanding people: "do this mantra so many times", "go and help them build a temple".
• Exalted Saturn in the 10th obstructs it. Mars is in his own sign and Saturn exalted; both are very strong, so it is hard to cancel fully. The aggressive streak shows now and then, mostly not.
• A planet giving virodhargala does not stamp its own nature on the person. Here Saturn's nature — humble, patient, disciplined, austere — is there anyway, because he is lagna lord.
• Saturn, Jupiter and Ketu all influencing lagna: orthodox, traditional.

Malefics in the 3rd House

A student's question: if the 3rd has more than two malefics, does it cause argala and also cancel the 11th-house argala? Yes.

• Example: Venus in the 11th; Sun, Mars and Saturn in the 3rd. Venus has argala on lagna; the 3rd-house planets dominate and give virodhargala. Venus is completely shut down.
• In addition, Parasara says many malefics in the 3rd cause argala, not just virodhargala.
• What it means: the 4th is the basic happiness of having found your bearings. The 11th is the happiness of having got what you wanted. But if there is initiative in you to start a new effort (3rd), what you achieved counts for nothing: you wanted a million dollars and got it, then the agenda changed and you need ten million. The happiness of the first million no longer influences lagna.
• So the malefics in the 3rd not only cancel that happiness; they fill the nature with the urge to do something new.
• A benefic in the 3rd also cancels the 11th-house argala — there is a new desire — but gives no special argala.

"It does not give a new identity. It cancels the other identity."

Ketu and Argala — a Difference With Sanjay Ji

Sanjay Ji's teaching: when finding argalas on the sign containing Ketu (or on planets in that sign), reckon in reverse — for all argalas on that sign. In the 1926 chart, for argalas on Sagittarius (the 12th house, with Ketu): Jupiter in Capricorn is then not in the 2nd but in the 12th; Saturn in Libra is not in the 11th but in the 3rd.

PVNR's view, which he holds Parasara taught:

• Whether Ketu sits in the house on which you are finding argalas is not the factor.
• On any house, the argala from Rahu or Ketu is counted in reverse.
• Argalas on Sagittarius: Jupiter is in the 2nd. He does not move to the 12th because Ketu is in Sagittarius. "We are not finding argalas on Ketu. We are finding argalas on Sagittarius."
• Argalas on Jupiter or lagna (Capricorn): Ketu is taken not in the 12th but in the 2nd.
• Why: Ketu looks at things in reverse. He takes himself as the reference and counts back; Scorpio is his 2nd house, his resources. Counting on that way, Capricorn is his 12th — "this is where I have to give". He gives to that house, so he becomes a resource for it: he has argala on it.
• A planet in the same sign as Ketu looks normally. If Mercury were with Ketu in Sagittarius, Capricorn is the 2nd from Mercury.

"Only Rahu and Ketu's thinking is, because they are always looking back, their thinking becomes reversed. Planets, other planets along with them, they look normally only."

He and Sanjay Ji have not reconciled this. Some of their differences were talked out and settled, some cannot be reconciled; this one they have not had a chance to discuss.

Example Chart (1966) — Catering Business Question

The Question

• B.Sc. and M.Sc. in chemistry. First job as a beautician in 1987. Worked as a chemist from June 1989 to July 1992. Has not worked in the 15 years since.
• Now she wants to start a catering business. Is the time right? She is afraid of losing money.

The Chart and the D10 Rectification

• Rasi: Scorpio lagna at 12°00'30" with Ketu. Moon in Leo (10th), Mars and debilitated Mercury in Pisces (5th), Sun and Saturn in Aquarius (4th), Jupiter and Rahu in Taurus (7th), Venus in Capricorn (3rd).
• The lagna sits right on a Dasamsa boundary. At the given time the D10 lagna is Scorpio; a couple of seconds earlier it is Libra. The student who brought the chart had already rectified it. PVNR checks with Vimshottari:
  • 1987, beautician — Venus dasha (Saturn or Mercury antardasha; the month is not known).
  • June 1989, chemist — Venus–Mercury.
  • July 1992, stopped working — Sun–Mars.
• Libra fits, and he moves the time back to 12:29 AM. A small difference in ayanamsa is enough to explain it.

D10 with Libra lagna: Jupiter and Saturn in lagna; Venus and Mars in the 3rd (Sagittarius); Mercury and Rahu in the 5th (Aquarius); Ketu in the 11th (Leo); Sun and Moon in the 12th (Virgo). Arudha Lagna is Aquarius.

Why Libra fits:

• Venus dasha: Venus is lagna lord — a career starting in his dasha is reasonable.
• Mercury antardasha: Mercury is in the Arudha Lagna, in the 5th (purva punya coming as a job), and is the 10th lord counted from Venus.
• Sun dasha: the Sun is in the 12th, in marana karaka sthana, and afflicts the 10th lord there. A break in career.
• Mars antardasha: Mars is the 7th lord in the 3rd — for one in service he is a maraka for the service. From dasha lord Sun he owns the 3rd and the 8th, the short break and the long break.

Not a powerful Dasamsa: the 10th lord of D10 (Moon) and the 10th lord of the rasi chart (Sun) are together in the 12th, the Sun in marana karaka sthana. The one good thing is the Raja yoga of Mercury and Rahu in the 5th.

"Sun-Moon Amavasya yoga in the 12th house, that's basically what caused Amavasya on her career."

• A student, going by Jupiter in the D10 lagna, expected a teacher. PVNR: the 6th house is very weak, and a Jupiterian career such as teaching does not go well with the 6th. A Jupiterian career was possible, but the dashas never came.
• On the work she did: Venus shows beauty, and also chemicals (some say Mars); also management, entertainment, architecture, dance, singing, poetry.

Moon Dasha — the Career That Did Not Happen

• The Moon is in the 10th in rasi, a benefic, and is the 10th lord of D10. There was potential: a nursing home, or cooking. The karakas of cooking are the Moon and Mars.
• But in D10 he is in the 12th with the badhaka lord (Sun), and in the 8th from Arudha Lagna. So it did not happen. Had she tried hard, a job cooking at a restaurant or at a nursing home was possible in that dasha.

Mars Dasha — Business, Not Service

Mars dasha has just begun and runs seven years. He broke the service earlier. Can he give a business? "Absolutely."

• Mars is the 7th lord in the 3rd with lagna lord Venus — a Raja yoga. As 7th lord he is a maraka for service, but for business he is the karaka.
• No planet in the 7th does not matter: the dasha of the 7th lord is running, so the 7th is strong for these seven years.
• He is in the 11th from Arudha Lagna: tangible gain of image as a businesswoman, a working woman. The Sun and the Moon, the previous dasha lords, are in the 8th from Arudha Lagna and did not promote the image.
• Mars is also the 2nd lord.
• A7 and A3 are together (in Leo), the 2nd lord (Ketu) is in them, and Mars has a secondary argala on them.
• Venus is in Kuberamsa and Mars in Brahmamsa.

"She should not work for anybody because there will be disasters in this period. She should only have a business, and my judgment is she will succeed quite well."

Money — Hora and Rasi

Hora (D-2), as read in class: Mars is lagna lord, in the 9th in a friendly sign. He is also the 8th lord — risk-taking and gambling, not disaster; lagna is stronger than the 8th. He is with Mercury, the 6th lord and the karaka of loans. A6 and A11 are there too: a tangible loan and a tangible gain.

• Verdict: she should take a loan for the business. He does not think she will burn her fingers. "Of course, you can never guarantee."

Rasi: lagna lord Mars is with debilitated Mercury, the 8th and 11th lord, in the 5th of purva punya — sudden gains.

"Mercury-Mars combination tends to give good financial results. It's good for material plane."

• Mars dasha Mercury antardasha (or the reverse) can bring sudden, unexpected financial success.

Outside astrology he also sees a market: people now cater every function and puja, and want a home-made taste and a specific regional cuisine, not the standard restaurant menu.

Antardashas of Mars Dasha (from D10)

The Annual Charts — 2007 and 2008

2007 (current year):

• Hora lord (ruler of the year) is the Sun. The Sun is also lagna lord and sits in the 12th, in marana karaka sthana. Lagna is confidence: this is why she doubts and fears failure this year.
• Jupiter's dasha is running: the 5th and 8th lord in the 8th — risk-taking, loans.
• The 7th is not very strong. The annual chart does not confirm what the natal chart and Vimshottari show, so there is no momentum.
• The annual lagna is sensitive to the birth minute. With 12:28 instead of 12:29 it would be Cancer, with the Sun in lagna and Rahu in the 3rd — more confidence. The time has not been rectified that finely.

2008:

• The ruler of the year is Mars — lagna lord in the 8th, "the natural gambler in the house of gambling".
• Lagna lord and 5th lord (Jupiter) together in the 8th: a Raja yoga, and Guru-Mangala yoga.
• Venus (7th lord) and Saturn in lagna; the 7th lord and the A7 lord together in lagna.
• The 7th house has argala from the Guru-Mangala yoga. Mars aspects the 8th lord Mercury in the 3rd. The 10th lord Sun is strong in the 6th.

"Tell her to jump as soon as possible... But my feeling is it may actually end up getting postponed, postponed, and finally happen next year."

The placements above are as the teacher read them, apparently from the Dasamsa of the Tithi Pravesha charts (the Sun cannot be in the 12th from a Leo lagna in the rasi of this native's annual chart). The Tithi Pravesha moments are not given in class and these charts were not cast here.

Narayana Dasha

• She is in the middle of Cancer dasha — the 10th house of D10.
• The first third gave the results of the lord, the Moon. That is over. Now come the results of the aspects on Cancer.
• Rahu and Mercury in Aquarius aspect Cancer by rasi drishti — the 5th lord and the 9th lord, the Raja yoga of the chart. Career can take off now.

Remedy

• A student worked out the Palana Devata: Amatyakaraka Saturn is in Taurus in Navamsa; the 6th from there is Libra, lord Venus — Lakshmi. Venus is also the D10 lagna lord and is with Mars.
• Mars, the dasha lord, can be Narasimha.
• The Mercury–Rahu Raja yoga in Aquarius also shows Narasimha: Mercury is a Vishnu avatara, and Rahu gives the form.
• So: pray to Lakshmi Narasimha. It covers everything.

"Tell her to pray to Lakshmi Narasimha and just go ahead with the business, and if possible, hurry up. The time is very favorable. Just do it."

Side Questions on the Rasi Chart

• D-24: asked about her chemistry education. Lagna lord Mars aspects the 9th house and aspects the 2nd lord — exalted Venus — and the 9th lord is in the 2nd. The 9th and the 2nd are linked through the same planet.
• Guru-Chandala (Jupiter and Rahu in the 7th): the two are far apart in degrees. Not a big deal; it would be a concern if they were close.
• Sasa Mahapurusha yoga (Saturn in Aquarius in the 4th): technically there, but the Sun is close to Saturn and there is a lot of tension. Do not expect its results fully. Ruchaka gives a commander who goes out and leads by example; Sasa gives one who has many servants and commands from a position of power, enjoying, without leading by example.

Graha Arudha

What it is: Parasara taught how to find the arudha pada of a planet, just as of a house — the tangible manifestation of the planet. He did not teach what to read from it; that is left to us.

How to find it (the reverse of a bhava arudha):

• A planet owns two signs. Take the stronger of the two.
• Count from the planet to that sign, and the same distance again from that sign.
• Example in the 1966 chart: Jupiter is in Taurus. Of his signs Pisces is stronger, having two planets. Taurus to Pisces is the 11th; the 11th from Pisces is Capricorn — Jupiter's graha arudha.

Which sign is stronger: the standard rules — more planets, aspects of Jupiter, Mercury and the lord, and so on. Larger degree cannot break the tie here, because both signs have the same lord. The rule that always settles it:

"A sign whose lord is in a sign of different oddity becomes stronger."

Each planet owns one odd and one even sign, and the lord sits in a sign of one oddity. So one of the two is always stronger by this rule.

Dual Graha Arudha — Sanjay Ji's Use

In the dual graha arudha both arudhas are found, one from each sign the planet owns, even if one sign is weaker. Sanjay Ji uses them to see the relationship between the native and people of a given sign (that sign rising or strong in their chart).

In the 1966 chart (Scorpio lagna):

• It is like a lagna with two lords. Here the Arudha Lagna of the rasi chart is Cancer, but Leo is also an Arudha Lagna, because Ketu too is lord of Scorpio. One of the two dominates.
• Likewise one of a planet's two graha arudhas dominates. But when the question is about people of a specific rasi, take the arudha that corresponds to that rasi.
