Char Dasha: Two Natal and Two Transit Parameters

• What was taught earlier about Char Dasha was "the tip of the iceberg". Read what Parashara gave. Rasi dashas like Char Dasha are judged on these factors:

1. The natal chart as it stands. What house is the dasha sign? Where is its lord? Is the dasha sign the house of interest, is its lord there, is the lord of that house in the dasha sign, does he aspect it?
2. The natal chart with the dasha sign as lagna. Are there interesting yogas — for marriage, between lagna lord and 7th lord?
3. Transit at the time of the event, taking the dasha sign as lagna.
4. Transit at dasha pravesha, when the dasha began.

"You see the transit, two parameters in the transit, and you see two parameters in the natal. So you have these four different parameters, two times two. These are the basic factors you see for Char Dasha."

• Working order: check Vimshottari; check the Char Dasha of the divisional chart of interest; take the dasha sign as lagna in the natal varga; then go to the Rasi transits at the time of the event. With the right Char Dasha, something interesting usually shows in the transits.
• A planet in own sign in the dasha sign, and an exalted or Moolatrikona planet in the house of interest from it, are blessings.

Do Not Use Char Dasha Antardashas

"Don't use the antardashas. We still need to figure out whether the calculation is right or not, and if the calculation is right, how to use it. I don't know. No need to make sense of something that has no sense."

Co-Lord Rule for Aquarius and Scorpio

• Aquarius has two lords, Saturn and Rahu; Scorpio has Mars and Ketu.
• Parashara's order for choosing between them in Char Dasha calculation:
  1. If one co-lord is in the sign itself, take the other.
  2. The one with more planets joined.
  3. The exalted one (and, by extension, not the debilitated one).
  4. The strength of the sign occupied: fixed stronger than movable, dual stronger than fixed.
  5. The one who gives more years.
• The first rule is fundamental. It is the same for Narayana Dasa and for arudha.
• In this D9 Saturn is in Aquarius, so Rahu is taken as lord of Aquarius for the calculation. This does not make Saturn any less the 7th lord. He gives the 7th-house results, and his being in the house is a blessing for it.
• Analogy: the husband stays at home, the wife goes out for the groceries. For the errand the wife runs the house; the husband is still in it, looking after it. Or: a manager doing the engineering work himself gets the work done — but for the schedule you go to the co-manager.
• Jagannatha Hora computes Char Dasha with the Narayana Dasa strength rules, close to but not the same as Parashara's Char Dasha rules. The teacher gets better results by breaking the last two rules and has no objective rule to code, so he left it. It is fine in most cases. If things do not line up — especially when a Scorpio or Aquarius dasha has already passed in the life — try the other lordship. The natal and transit checks tell which alternative fits.

360-Tithi Year for All Nakshatra Dashas

• In Jagannatha Hora: Definition of year in dashas → Year with 360 tithis → apply to all nakshatra dashas.
• Chosen by experiment. It works better.
• 360 tithis are about 354 days — 10 days short of the solar year. At age 10 or 15 it hardly matters. At 30 the dashas are off by almost a year, and every antardasha with them.
• Logically one cannot prove which definition is right, but nakshatra dashas are Moon-based and the tithi is Moon-based.
• An Upanishad (he thinks the Mandukya) gives longevity in Kali Yuga as about 116 years. 120 years of 354 days come to about 116 ordinary years.
• Mahabharata: at the end of the exile the Pandavas counted the term as complete using 360-tithi years. Duryodhana argued for solar years and said it was not. Dharmaraja, Bhishma and Krishna argued for 360 tithis. So at some time this year was in use.
• Islam still counts 360 tithis as a year. Hindu festivals use tithis too, but are realigned to the solar year every couple of years by the adhika masa.

Functional Nature: From Lagna and From the House of Interest

• From lagna: is the planet conducive to the person's overall self in that area of life?
• From the house of interest: is the planet well disposed toward that matter — its lord in own sign, Moolatrikona or exaltation, or aspecting it?
• Parashara says both: benefics occupying or aspecting a house are good for it; and the lord of a house aspecting it, sitting in it, or exalted is good for it.
• Combine the two. Saturn in this D9 is neutral or slightly malefic from lagna and, from the 7th, lagna lord in lagna. He gives marriage.
• Rahu and Ketu: for their basic nature, the house occupied and the company. Their ownership is used only for yogas.
• 8th lord and 2nd/12th lords: neither benefic nor malefic by themselves. See the other house owned and the company.

Maraka

• 2nd lord; 7th lord; malefics afflicting the 2nd or 7th, especially the 2nd.
• A benefic who owns the 2nd is still a maraka. His dasha is good and may carry some problems.
• Rahu or Ketu in the 2nd are not marakas when by house and company they are benefics, as in this D24.
