FoundationsTiming & Dashas

Char Dasha 4-Factor Framework: (1)Natal from Dasha Sign, (2)Dasha Sign as Lagna, (3)Transit at Event, (4)Transit at Dasha Start; Co-Lord Rule (Scorpio/Aquarius); 360-Tithi Year for ALL Nakshatra Dashas (Mandukya Upanishad+Mahabharata+Moon Logic); Two Reference Frames (Lagna=Overall Quality; House of Interest=Event Capability); Rahu/Ketu NOT Maraka

Char Dasha 4-factor analysis framework: (1) Natal chart from dasha sign — what house is it, where is its lord, relation to house of interest? (2) Natal chart with dasha sign as lagna — what yogas form? Parivartana? Strong combinations? (3) Transit at time of event from dasha sign as lagna. (4) Transit at dasha pravesh (when dasha started). "2 natal × 2 transit parameters; when all 4 are conducive, event is certain." Char Dasha antardasha: "Don't use — calculation uncertain, interpretation uncertain; stick to main Char Dasha sign + Vimshottari for finer timing." Co-lord rule (Aquarius/Scorpio): if one co-lord is IN the sign, use the other for Char Dasha calculation; but "the lord that IS there still blesses that house." 360-Tithi year for ALL nakshatra dashas: (1) empirical = works better, especially for 30+ year olds (10+ day/year difference = ~1 year gap by age 30); (2) Mandukya Upanishad = ~116 years Kali Yuga lifespan; 120 Vimshottari × 354 days ÷ 365.25 ≈ 116 = matches; (3) Mahabharata = Pandavas' Vanavas — Dharmaraja/Krishna used 360-Tithi year, Duryodhana used solar; (4) internal consistency = nakshatra dashas are Moon-based, Tithi is Moon-based. "Set in JH: Definition of Year in Dashas → Year with 360 Tithis → All Nakshatra Dashas." Two frames for functional nature: Frame 1 (from lagna) = overall quality of dasha for person; Frame 2 (from house of interest) = specific event capability. "Not contradictory — complementary; Saturn neutral from lagna but ideal for marriage as 7th lord in 7th." Maraka rules: 2nd lord = Maraka; 7th lord = Maraka; planets afflicting 2nd/7th = can become Maraka; "Rahu/Ketu are NOT Maraka — Parashara never assigned them Maraka role; they take character of company and house." Benefic planet with 2nd lordship: even a benefic planet is technically Maraka by 2nd lordship and may create complications in dasha.

"Four reference points. From the Char Dasha sign natally — what house is it, what is its lord doing? With the Char Dasha sign as lagna — what yogas appear? From the dasha sign as lagna, what are the transits doing at the time of the event? What were the transits doing when the dasha started? Two natal, two transit. When all four are conducive, I have full confidence in the event. When three are conducive and one is mixed, I say high probability. When only two are — I say possible."

Key Methodological Teachings

Char Dasha — 4-Factor Analysis Framework

PVNR on Rasi Dasha (Char Dasha) analysis — 4 parameters:

  1. Natal chart from dasha sign: What house is the dasha sign? Where is its lord? What is dasha sign's lord's relationship with the house of interest?
  2. Natal chart with dasha sign as lagna: What yogas form when we treat dasha sign as lagna? Is there a lagna-7th lord parivartana? Any strong yogas?
  3. Transit at time of event (Rasi transits from dasha sign as lagna): Physical transits from Earth
  4. Transit at dasha pravesh (when the dasha started): Another transit reference point

"These are 2 natal × 2 transit parameters. Four reference points. When all are conducive, the event is certain."

— PVNR

On Char Dasha Antardashas:

"Don't use the Char Dasha antardasha. Calculation is uncertain, interpretation is uncertain, I don't know how to use it. Just use the main Char Dasha sign, and check Vimshottari for antardasha timing."

— PVNR

Char Dasha Co-Lord Rule (Aquarius/Scorpio)

  • For Aquarius: co-lords are Saturn AND Rahu
  • Rule: If one co-lord is IN the sign itself, take the other for Char Dasha calculation
  • Example: Saturn in Aquarius (Scorpio dasha sign) → take Rahu as the Char Dasha lord for calculation purposes
  • But: "Saturn being there is STILL a blessing for that house. Lord of any house in its own house always blesses that house. We just don't COUNT it for Char Dasha distance calculation."
  • Applies to: Aquarius (Saturn/Rahu), Scorpio (Mars/Ketu)

Dasha Sign Lord Transit Rule

"If the Char Dasha sign lord is transiting in own sign, Moolatrikona, or exaltation — either in natal chart OR in transit chart — good events can occur in that dasha."

— PVNR

Additional transit rules from Char Dasha sign as lagna:

  • 7th lord transiting in 7th from dasha sign = marriage
  • 5th lord transiting in 5th from dasha sign = recognition, education, children
  • 12th lord and 9th lord on 12th house axis = going abroad
  • Lagna lord transiting 7th = partnership/marriage; transiting 9th/trine = good fortune

360-Tithi Year for Vimshottari (Recommended Setting)

PVNR recommendation: Use 360 Tithis as 1 year definition for ALL Nakshatra Dashas (not the standard solar/tropical year)

Why 360 Tithis:

  1. Empirical: Works better in practice, especially for people 30+ years old (10+ days difference per year = ~1 year difference by age 30)
  2. Upanishad reference: Mandukya Upanishad mentions ~116 years as Kali Yuga lifespan; 120 standard Vimshottari years × 354 tithi-days/year ÷ 365.25 ≈ 116 solar years → matches!
  3. Mahabharata: Pandavas' Vanavas controversy — Dharmaraja/Krishna used 360 Tithi years; Duryodhana used solar years; evidence that ancient Indians used 360-Tithi year
  4. Moon logic: Nakshatra dashas are Moon-based; Tithi is Moon-based → internal consistency
  5. Islamic calendar: Still uses 354-day (lunar) years for religious purposes

How to set in Jagannatha Hora: Go to "Definition of Year in Dashas" → "Year with 360 Tithis" → apply to "All Nakshatra Dashas"

Functional Nature: Two Reference Frames

Frame 1: From Lagna — Is this planet overall good/bad for the person?

  • Rules from BPHS Ch.34: trikona lords = benefic; kendra lords (if natural malefic) = neutral; dusthana lords = malefic
  • Shows: will the dasha cause suffering or happiness to the person overall?

Frame 2: From House of Interest — Can this planet give the specific result?

  • Take the house of interest as lagna; is the planet lord of that house? Is it well-placed for that house?
  • Shows: can this planet deliver the specific event?

PVNR:

"These are not contradictory — they are complementary. Saturn in this chart is neutral from lagna (6th+7th lord). But from the 7th house, Saturn is lagna lord in own lagna — completely auspicious for marriage. He may not enhance your overall personality during his dasha, but he WILL give marriage."

— PVNR

Maraka Rules (Reinforced)

  • 2nd lord = Maraka
  • 7th lord = Maraka
  • Planets afflicting 2nd/7th (especially malefics) = can become Maraka
  • Rahu/Ketu are NOT Maraka: Parashara never assigned them Maraka role; they are not malefics by themselves (they take character of company and house)
  • A benefic planet can also be Maraka by lordship: Mars (benefic for Pisces) is 2nd lord → still a Maraka, meaning his dasha may have some complications despite being overall benefic
