BPHS Ch.16 Verses 1–11 — 5th House: Children Existence, First Child Death, One Child Combos & Dattaputra (Adoption) Yoga

BPHS — Panchamabhava Phaladhyaya, Verses 1–8 (Children, First Child, One Child, A9)

Chapter 16 in Santhanam's edition. "Atha panchama bhavasya kathayami phalam dvija" — "O Brahmin, now I tell the results of the 5th house."

Verse 1: Lagna Lord and 5th Lord Together in the 5th, or in a Kendra or Trikona

"Lagnape sutabhavasthe sutape cha sute sthite, kendra trikona samsthe va purnam putrasukham vadet"

• Lagnapa = lagna lord (pa = one who rules). Suta bhava = 5th house. Sutapa = 5th lord.
• Lagna lord and 5th lord together in the 5th house, or in a kendra or a trikona → purnam putrasukham — happiness from children is complete.

Second line — "Shashtashtama vyayasthe tu sutadhishe tu aputrata": the 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th → aputrata, lack of children. This line speaks of the 5th lord alone.

The teacher's bottom line:

• Forget the lagna lord. The 5th lord in a kendra or trikona is good; in the 6th, 8th or 12th it is bad.
• If the lagna lord joins him in the good houses, it is better still.
• If a dusthana lord joins the 5th lord in a dusthana, it is worse.
• Mars in the 6th makes some things prosper, he being a natural malefic. But if he is the 5th lord, the placement is still not good for happiness from children.

A student objects that the verse says "no kids":

"He said no kids, but you have to take it with a pinch of salt. It is basically either no kids or not full happiness from children. So there may be a child but the child may be giving lot of trouble."

Verses 2–3: 5th Lord Combust, or Afflicted by Functional Malefics, or Weak

"Suteshe astangate vapi papakrante cha nirbale, tada na jayate putro jato va mriyate dhruvam"

• Astangata = combust. Papakranta = afflicted by malefics — the teacher reads this as functional malefics. Nirbala = weak.
• The conditions are alternatives: combust, or with functional malefics, or weak in general.
• Result: no child is born, or if born, he dies early.
• Teacher: the result as stated may be too extreme. The child may not die, but it is not auspicious for children.

Using These Verses in Saptamsa (D-7)

The teacher's suggestion: use Parashara's verses in the Saptamsa as well as the Rasi chart. Replace sutesha in the verse with the lord of the house that shows the particular child.

• Which house shows the first child depends on the lagna: the 5th counted forward for an odd sign, counted backward for an even sign.
• Even-sign example: Scorpio lagna. Count backward — the first child's lord is the Moon (Cancer). If the Moon is in the 8th house, Gemini, the first child may not survive.
• Odd lagna, 5th lord in the 6th: bad. The 6th is the maraka sthana (the 2nd) from the 5th. The first child very likely does not survive; it can be an abortion.
• Even lagna, 9th lord in the 8th: the same thing counted backward. Equally bad.
• Odd lagna, 5th lord in the 8th: not as bad. Taking the 5th as lagna, its lord is in the 4th. But he is in a dusthana, so there is some suffering or anxiety for the native over that child.

Verse 4: 5th Lord in the 6th + Lagna Lord with Mars → The First Child Dies

"Shashtasthane sutadhishe lagneshe kuja samyute, mriyate prathamapatyam kakabandhya cha gehini"

• 5th lord in the 6th house, and the lagna lord with Mars.
• Mriyate prathamapatyam = the first child dies.
• Kakabandhya cha gehini — gehini is the wife. Santhanam translates that the wife will not be fertile afterwards. The teacher is not sure what kakabandhya means and accepts Santhanam's translation for now.

Abortion counts as the death of a child. It can be death soon after birth, or an abortion.

"As soon as the zygote is formed, the child has taken shape, and if there is an abortion, basically the child is dead. You do not consider it to be a non-child just because the child did not come out of the womb."

Student's question: if the parents choose the abortion, do these combinations still show it? Yes, some of them may. The lagna lord or the 7th lord may then have a role to play — it happens through their will.

Verse 5: 5th Lord Debilitated in a Dusthana + Mercury and Ketu in the 5th → Only One Child

"Sutadhisho hi nichastho vyaya shashtashtama sthitah, kakabandhya bhaven nari sute ketu budhau yadi"

Both conditions together (no "or" in the verse, so it is "and"):

1. The 5th lord is debilitated and in the 6th, 8th or 12th — doubly bad.
2. The 5th house contains Mercury and Ketu.

→ Kakabandhya — Santhanam translates this as a woman who has only one child. The teacher does not know the etymology and accepts it for now.

Is a 5th lord debilitated in a dusthana possible? The teacher runs through the lagnas:

• Aries: the 5th lord is debilitated in the 7th. Taurus: Mercury, in the 11th. Gemini: Venus, in the 4th. None of these qualifies.
• Cancer: Mars is debilitated in lagna, but the co-lord Ketu is debilitated in the 12th.
• Leo: Jupiter is debilitated in the 6th.
• Virgo: Saturn is debilitated in the 8th.

So the verse has plenty of cases.

Verse 6: 5th Lord Debilitated and Not Aspecting the 5th + Mercury and Saturn in the 5th → Only One Child

• The 5th lord is debilitated — not necessarily in a dusthana — and does not aspect the 5th house. A debilitated 5th lord who still aspects his house is a relief.
• The 5th house contains Sauri (son of the Sun = Saturn) and Budha (Mercury).

→ Again only one child.

The pattern in verses 5 and 6:

• Mercury is in the 5th with a planet that deprives — Ketu or Saturn.
• Because of Mercury there is one child. Saturn or Ketu restricts it to one.
• A strong 5th lord can override this, even with Saturn or Ketu in the 5th with Mercury.
• It turns bad when the 5th lord is also weak: in a dusthana, or debilitated, or not aspecting the 5th to rescue it.
• The criteria can be mixed with judgment. A 5th lord in the 6th or 8th who is not debilitated but is with a functional malefic probably gives a similar result.

"You can judiciously mix various criteria as long as you understand what is good and what is bad."

Verse 7: 9th Lord in Lagna + 5th Lord Debilitated + Mercury and Ketu in the 5th → A Child After Much Difficulty

"Bhagyesho murtivarti chet sutesho nichago yadi, sute ketu budhau syatam sutam kashtad vinirdishet"

• Bhagyesha = 9th lord. Murti = the body, the overall shape, so the lagna. The 9th lord is in lagna.
• The 5th lord is debilitated, and Mercury and Ketu are in the 5th. These are the bad combinations of verse 5.
• Result: sutam kashtat — a child, after difficulty.

Why the 9th lord in lagna rescues the 5th house: the lagna is the 5th from the 9th. So the ārūḍha of the 9th, A9 (Bhagya Pada), falls in the 5th from lagna — the house of children. A9 is the tangible manifestation of a person's luck. Parashara does not say it in these terms, but this is what the verse means.

• From the rest of the combination it looks as if there are no children. This one factor comes to the rescue.
• They do not get a child for a long time. They do remedies, go on pilgrimages, or go through treatment. After a lot of trouble there is a child, and people say "thank God, finally they got a child."

"The lesson from this is, if A9 is in a particular house, it is a blessing to that house."

The same rule in career: with A9 in the 10th, the person is seen as lucky in career. There may be problems, but in the end the career is in a good position and people say he is very lucky.

Verse 8: A Verse With Something Missing

Santhanam: "If the 5th lord is in the 6th, 8th or the 12th, or be in an inimical sign, or be in fall, or in the 5th itself, the native will beget issues with difficulty."

The teacher is not satisfied:

• Read as plain Sanskrit, the verse says the 5th lord is in the 5th house and is debilitated, or in an enemy's sign, or in the 6th/8th/12th. That is impossible: a planet in its own house is neither debilitated nor in an enemy's sign.
• Read as a list of alternatives, "in the 5th" does not belong with the others. Dusthana, debility and an enemy's sign are all bad. The 5th lord in the 5th is good.
• The result given is kashtat putram — a child is born, but with difficulty.

His reading: the 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or debilitated, or in an inimical sign → trouble in getting a child. The words sutesha … sute must hide a rider that lifts the bad condition — for example a good planet such as Jupiter in the 5th house. A word is missing or the second line has an error.

Dattaputra (Adoption) Yogas — Verses 9–11

Verse 9: 5th House in a Sign of Mercury or Saturn + Saturn with Mandi Joining or Aspecting It

"Panchame budha kshetre manda kshetre athava punah, mande mandi yute drishte tada dattadayah sutah"

1. The 5th house is a Budha kshetra (Gemini or Virgo) or a Manda kshetra (Capricorn or Aquarius).
2. Saturn is together with Mandi, and he occupies or aspects the 5th house.

→ Dattadayah sutah — Dattaputra yoga. The person has an adopted child.

Why Saturn and Mercury are the key planets for adoption:

• They are the neutral planets.
• Saturn deprives.
• Mercury does not deprive, but he was a Dattaputra himself: born to Tara by the Moon, then adopted and raised by Jupiter.
• Manda and Mandi — Saturn and his son — show not having one's own parents: being away from them and adopted by someone else.

Verse 10: Sun and Moon in the Same Rasi and the Same Amsa

• Ravi Chandra … ekasthau — Sun and Moon together in the same sign and the same amsa. Whether the amsa is navamsa, dwadasamsa or saptamsa is not clear.
• Result: the person is brought up (poshita) by three mothers or two fathers. One parent too many.

The teacher's remarks:

• This is Amavasya yoga at the exact new-moon point — the weakest Moon. The Moon matters for being nourished by the parents, so this dosha shows misfortune over parents.
• But that result is for the native who has the combination. It does not belong in the chapter on children.
• His speculation, stated as speculation: Parashara may be hinting that when this combination has a link to the 5th house — in it or aspecting it — the child has multiple parents. Example: in the Saptamsa, the house of the first child holds Sun and Moon in the same sign and same amsa. That child gets a different mother; the native loses his wife and marries again.

"That is basically speculation. That is a possibility."

He asks the students to test both readings on charts.

Verse 11: Six Planets in the 5th + 5th Lord in the 12th + Lagna Lord and Moon Strong → Adopted Child

"Panchame shadgrahair yukte tadishe vyayarashige, lagneshendu balayuktau tada datta sutodbhavah"

1. Six planets occupy the 5th house.
2. The 5th lord is in the 12th house.
3. The lagna lord and the Moon are strong.

→ Datta suta — an adopted child.

Why:

• It can show a child who is displaced.
• A 5th lord in a dusthana is not good for the 5th, by the earlier verses.
• Six planets in the 5th do not mean many children. Benefics and malefics are mixed, so there are good yogas and bad yogas together — mixed agendas, too many cooks spoiling the broth. Materially, six planets in one house are not good for that house.
• Six planets in a quadrant from lagna can give vairāgya and make a sanyasi. Take the 5th as lagna: six planets in a quadrant from it give vairāgya as far as getting a child is concerned.
• But the lagna lord and the Moon are strong, so in general he is a lucky and happy person.

Where is the Putra Pada (A5)?

• The 5th lord in the 12th is in the 8th from the 5th. The 8th from the 12th is the 7th house. A5 is in the 7th.
• A5 is the tangible manifestation of children. The six planets in the 5th are in the 11th from A5 — an 11th-house argala on it. One of them may be Rahu or Ketu and count the other way, obstructing; even so, five or six planets give a very strong argala on A5.
• So there must be some tangible manifestation of children, despite the negatives.
• A5 in the 7th: the child comes through interaction with other people. You go and talk to people, and adopt a child.
