BPHS Ch.16 Verses 1–7 — 5th House: Children Existence, First Child Death, One Child Combos & Dattaputra (Adoption) Yoga
BPHS Ch.16 (Panchamabhava Phaladhyayam — 5th house results). Verse 1: lagna lord in 5H OR 5th lord in 5H OR both in kendra/kona = complete happiness from children. Opposite: 5th lord in dusthana (6/8/12) = no children or serious trouble from them. Verse 3: 5th lord combust + with functional malefics + generally weak = no child or child dies early. In D7: apply same rules to individual children's house lords. Verse 4: 5th lord in 6H + lagna lord with Mars = first child dies (abortion counts — Parashara treats it as child death once conception occurs). Verse 5: 5th lord debilitated in dusthana + Mercury and Ketu in 5H = only one child. Verse 6: same with Saturn instead of Ketu. Pattern: Mercury in 5H + malefic (Ketu or Saturn) = one child; strong 5th lord can override. Verse 7: same negative pattern BUT 9th lord is in lagna (→ A9 falls in 5H) = child obtained after great difficulty but ultimately yes. A9 principle: wherever A9 falls, that house gets a blessing from fortune. Verse 9 (Dattaputra Yoga): 5H in Mercury sign (Gemini/Virgo) or Saturn sign (Capricorn/Aquarius) + Saturn with Mandi aspects 5H = adopted child. Why Saturn + Mercury for adoption: Saturn deprives natural children; Mercury himself was adopted (Tara's son raised by Jupiter). Verse 11: 6 planets in 5H + 5th lord in 12H + lagna lord and Moon strong = adopted child (vairagya from natural children — too many mixed agendas in 5H).
"Wherever A9 is, that house receives a blessing from Fortune. If A9 is in the 5th house, despite all negative combinations, there will ultimately be a child — but after great difficulty."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS — Panchamabhava Phaladhyayam (5th House Effects)
Chapter 16 in Santhanam. Parashara focuses almost entirely on children — their existence, quantity, gender, survival, and the possibility of adoption.
Verse 1: Lagna Lord + 5th Lord in 5H or Kendra/Kona → Complete Happiness from Children
— PVNR"Lagna pah suta bhavasthe, suta pecha sute sthite, kendra trikona samsteva, purnam putrasukham vadet"
Conditions (any of the following):
- Lagna lord in the 5th house
- 5th lord in the 5th house
- Both in a kendra or kona (need not be together)
→ Purnam putrasukham vadet = complete happiness from children, guaranteed
Counterpart: If the 5th lord is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th (dusthanas) → Aputrata = no children (or lack of happiness from children)
PVNR's nuance: "Aputrata means either no children or not full happiness from children — there may be a child but giving lot of trouble."
Verse 3: 5th Lord Combust or With Functional Malefics → No Child or Child Dies Early
— PVNR"Suteshe astangate, vapi papakrante, chenirbalaye, kada najayate putro, vaa brijate adhuvam"
- Astangate = combust (5th lord too close to Sun)
- Papakrante = with functional malefics (papa = functional, not natural)
- Chenirbalaye = generally weak
→ No child, or if born, dies early
Application to Saptamsa (D7): PVNR recommends applying these principles in the D7 chart to see the fate of each specific child:
- In D7, identify the lord of the house corresponding to each child (counting forward/backward based on lagna type)
- If that lord is in the 6th house from lagna in D7, the first child may not survive
- Example: Scorpio D7 lagna (even sign → count backward), 5th lord Moon in 8th house → that child may not survive
Verse 4: 5th Lord in 6H + Lagna Lord with Mars → First Child Dies
- 5th lord in the 6th house
- Lagna lord is with Mars
→ Briyate prathamapatyam = the first child dies (or is stillborn/aborted)
On abortion: Parashara considers abortion equivalent to death of the child — as soon as conception occurs, the child has taken form (jiva sthiti).
Verse 5: 5th Lord Debilitated in Dusthana + 5H Has Mercury & Ketu → Only One Child
Conditions:
- 5th lord is debilitated AND in a dusthana (doubly afflicted)
- 5th house contains Mercury and Ketu
→ Person has only one child (Kakabanjha = one child only, per Santhanam's translation)
Note: Mercury is present (which allows some children), but Ketu (depriving/disconnecting) restricts to just one. If the 5th lord is strong, it can override this.
Key principle: The 5th lord, if strong, can rescue the 5th house even from Saturn/Ketu influences.
Verse 6: 5th Lord Debilitated + Not Aspecting 5H + Mercury & Saturn in 5H → Only One Child
- 5th lord is debilitated AND not aspecting the 5th house (i.e., no relief being provided)
- 5th house contains Mercury (Budha) and Saturn (Sauri)
→ Same result: only one child
Pattern recognized: Mercury in 5th house with a malefic (Ketu in verse 5, Saturn in verse 6) = one child combination. Mercury seems to allow some children but Saturn/Ketu restrict the number to one. The absence of 5th lord's aspect = no rescue.
Verse 7: 9th Lord in Lagna + 5th Lord Debilitated + Mercury & Ketu in 5H → Child After Great Difficulty (But A9 Saves)
Negative conditions:
- 5th lord debilitated
- 5th house has Mercury and Ketu
BUT the positive factor:
- 9th lord is in lagna → A9 (Arudha of 9th house) falls in the 5th house
Critical teaching on A9 in 5H:
— PVNR"Wherever A9 is, that house receives a blessing from Fortune. A9 shows the tangible manifestation of luck. If A9 is in the 5th house, despite all negative combinations, there will ultimately be a child — but kasthaad, after great difficulty."
Rule generalized: A9 in any house = that house is blessed by luck/fortune in that domain. Example: A9 in 10th → person seen as lucky in career despite struggles.
The mechanism: 9th lord being in lagna naturally places A9 in the 5th house (7th from lagna = count from 9th lord's house with corrections).
→ Result: Despite seeming hopeless, after pilgrimages, remedies, or medical treatment, the person does obtain a child.
Verse 9: 5H in Mercury or Saturn Sign + Saturn with Mandi Aspecting 5H → Adopted Child (Dattaputra Yoga)
— PVNR"Panchame budha kshetre, manda kshetre tava punah, mande mandi yutair drushte, tada dattadaya suta"
Conditions:
- 5th house is in Mercury's sign (Gemini or Virgo) OR Saturn's sign (Capricorn or Aquarius)
- Saturn with Mandi (Gulika) aspects the 5th house
→ Dattadaya suta = child obtained through adoption (Dattaputra yoga)
Why Saturn and Mercury for adoption?
— PVNR"Saturn and Mercury are the key planets for adoption."
- Saturn deprives natural children; represents detachment from normal parent-child bonds
- Mercury was himself adopted — he was Tara's son (by Moon), but was raised and given to Jupiter. Mercury is essentially a Dattaputra himself.
- Both are also "nakshatra planets" (Mercury and Saturn's nakshatras = Ashlesha/Jyeshtha/Revati and Pushya/Anuradha/Uttarabhadra) — somewhat neutral, detached energies
Mandi and Gulika: The verse mentions Mandi specifically as a co-indicator for adoption.
Verse 10: Sun + Moon in Same Rasi and Navamsa → Multiple Parental Figures (Discussed in 5H Context)
- Sun and Moon in same sign AND same navamsa (Amavasya yoga)
- Same verse was seen in the 1st house chapter (applying to the native)
- Here in 5th house context, PVNR speculates:
PVNR's interpretation: If Sun and Moon have this combination in the 5th house or 5th house Saptamsa, it may indicate that the child (not the native) born corresponding to that 5th house will have multiple parental figures — e.g., the native remarries, giving the child a new mother.
Verse 11: 6 Planets in 5H + 5th Lord in 12H + Lagna Lord and Moon Strong → Adopted Child (Vairagya from Natural Children)
Conditions:
- 6 planets in the 5th house (too many = "too many cooks")
- 5th lord in the 12th house (dusthana, not directly supporting 5H)
- Lagna lord and Moon are strong
→ Adopted child (datta suta)
Why 6 planets in 5H leads to adoption?
— PVNR"6 planets in any house occupying a quadrant from lagna can give Vairagya — detachment. Taking the 5th house as lagna, 6 planets in a kendra from it = Vairagya as far as children is concerned. Too many cooks spoil the broth — mixed agendas, not conducive to the 5th house."
A5 Analysis in this chart:
- 5th lord in 12th house → A5 (Putrapada) = count 7th from 12th = falls in 7th house
- A5 in 7th house = child comes through interaction with people → adoption through approach/negotiation with others
- 6 planets in 5th have 11th house argala on A5 → strong argala ensures some tangible manifestation of children
- Lagna lord and Moon strong = overall good fortune → ultimately child does come
Verse 12: 5H Aspected by Strong Mercury, Jupiter, Venus + 5th Lord Strong → Many Children
— PVNR"Sute jnaji va sukra, sabalai avalokte, bhavanti bahu vahaputraha, suteshishibalan vithay"
- Jnaji = Mercury; Jiva = Jupiter; Sukra = Venus
- All three natural benefics are strong and either occupy or aspect the 5th house
- 5th lord is also strong
→ Bahu vahaputraha = many children
The three natural benefics in strong configuration with the 5th lord = maximum fertility and happiness from children.
