Ayanamsa Reliability — Vakya vs Drik Siddhanta

Background: A student took a chart to an old Andhra astrologer who calculates by hand. He put Mercury in Scorpio with Jupiter and Sun. The software puts Mercury at 2° Sagittarius. He also asserted that Jupiter and Mercury must be together for the native to be a chartered accountant, and that 15–20 panchangas agreed with him.

Where a 2° difference comes from

• The Indian government standardised on Chitra Paksha (Lahiri) ayanamsa. The majority of panchangas published today use it, so "15 or 20 panchangas give Scorpio" does not make sense.
• The astrologer still gets the Moon in Purva Bhadrapada — only at 22–23° of the sign instead of 24°35'. Same nakshatra, shifted longitude: an ayanamsa issue.
• Lahiri is not perfect, but its inaccuracy is of the order of arc-minutes, not degrees.

"If you say that Lahiri ayanamsa is inaccurate, the whole foundation of whatever you have learnt is shaken. All the divisional charts, everything is utter nonsense. And I am quite convinced that that is not true."

What to do with such an assertion

• Mercury is in Sagittarius on that day. Deal with it. If something does not make sense with Mercury there, find out why the result still happened — do not move Mercury to Scorpio because a respected gentleman said so.
• People who predict from the Rasi chart alone go by intuition, not by method. Do not let their confidence shake the foundation.

The thumb rule itself

• "Jupiter and Mercury together for a chartered accountant" is baseless. Study the charts of chartered accountants: many do not have it.
• Mercury or Jupiter in the 10th of the Rasi chart does not settle profession either. Dasamsa gives something concrete.

Example chart

Facts: Chartered accountant with his own practice, started in the late 1990s. The teacher does not use Vimshottari here but a conditional dasha (the transcript reads "Sadaptaka" — most likely Shatabdika, which applies because the lagna is vargottama in Leo, and whose order has Mars followed by Saturn). He began in Mars dasha and continues in Saturn dasha.

D10 at the given time — Capricorn lagna

• A student's argument for accountancy: the 6th house is Gemini, owned by Mercury and aspected by Mercury (graha drishti from Sagittarius). The teacher: the only point, and a weak one.
• Of the 2nd, 6th and 10th, the 10th is strongest: Sun and Moon in Libra.
• 7th lord Moon is in the 10th and Mars is in the 7th → own business makes sense.
• But Sun, Moon and Mars show nothing of accounting. A cook, a technologist, a doctor — many things fit; a chartered accountant does not.

"In some cases we can reconcile with some difficulty. But this is a case where it's quite difficult to reconcile. Given that chart, it's very unlikely that he's a chartered accountant."

Which neighbouring lagna?

• The D10 lagna is in the middle of Capricorn, so it could go either way.
• Aquarius: 10th lord Mars would be in the 6th → service. He is not in service. Rejected.
• Sagittarius: move the birth time back about 7 minutes, to about 12:25 AM.

D10 with Sagittarius lagna

• 10th house Virgo holds A6 — working hard, overcoming obstacles; a link between the 6th and the 10th.
• 10th lord Mercury is strong in lagna → accountancy.
• 7th lord is the same Mercury, in lagna → his own practice.
• Mars is in the 8th, debilitated in Cancer. A planet in the 8th does not only show fall or frustration; it can show working very hard. Mars is lord of the 5th and 12th — a functional benefic for this lagna — and he occupies A5.
• 5th = recognition; A5 = tangible recognition of ability. Lagna and 5th are what start a career. So Mars dasha is a good dasha for career, and the practice starting then makes sense.

"My strong feeling is the Dasamsa lagna in the original chart is inaccurate. The time is not correct. It is probably 12:25."

• Check with the native later whether a seven-minute error is possible. Meanwhile go by the principles.

"Mercury in the 5th — no children for six years"

Student's point: Mercury in Sagittarius is in the 5th house; by the old astrologer's kind of rule there should be no children for the first six years after marriage. That did not happen — so perhaps Mercury is not in Sagittarius.

Teacher: It is just a thumb rule. Judge the strength of the 5th house as a whole.

• Rasi: 5th lord Jupiter is strong in Scorpio, a very fertile sign and a friendly one, in a kendra (the 4th), with lagna lord Sun — a friend and another fertile planet. Lagna lord and 5th lord together make a raja yoga.
• Then see Saptamsa and Jupiter's strength there. With the rectified time (not moved any further) the D7 lagna is Scorpio and its lord Mars is in the 8th — bad. Despite that, the 5th house shows early children and luck with children. (The teacher's words on the D7 5th house are lost in the recording; in the cast chart the 5th is Pisces, empty, and its lord Jupiter aspects it from the 11th by graha drishti.)
• Mercury and Venus in the 5th do not allow you to say "no children for five or six years", or for any fixed span.

Arudha Lagna vs Arudha of Lagna Lord

Question: The 5th from AL and the 5th from the arudha of the lagna lord both show the perceived intelligence of the person. What is the difference? (A5, by contrast, is the tangible object that shows ability — an award.)

"Both lagna and lagna lord are self, but lagna is the acting self, and lagna lord is the thinking self."

• The lagna lord — the intelligence — is behind every action; the action itself is shown by the lagna.
• Both rise on the material plane as arudhas. Both are images, and both are important.

Follow-up question: a malefic in the 3rd from AL but a benefic in the 3rd from the arudha of the lagna lord — what then?

• The two images can differ. A saint may have things fine from the lagna lord's arudha and not fine from AL: he is seen to act in a material way, yet the world still thinks, "he is doing this, but he is thinking like a saint."
• The 3rd and 6th from AL are normally what is checked, because those are the person's actions. A saint's actions have to be sattvic.
• Malefics in the 3rd and 6th mean forceful actions — "it is not even violence". A typical saint, with exceptions, is not seen acting in a forceful way.

Nakshatra Discrepancy

Question: a student keeps finding people whose family nakshatra differs from the computed one.

The teacher names three possibilities. Two are audible in the recording:

Where the nakshatra matters

1. Puja sankalpa — you state your nakshatra, rasi and lagna.
2. Sarvatobhadra chakra — rarely used in daily work.

• Transits are read from the Moon sign. If the Moon sign is not in dispute and only the nakshatra changes, it does not matter much.

A man told all his life that he is Moola

• Birth at 7:30 PM, so not a date confusion. Somebody used a panchangam whose longitudes were 2–3° advanced. Lahiri gives Jyeshtha.
• Tell him plainly: "You are not Moola, you are Jyeshtha." Do not say "maybe there is some error".

"People who come to us don't know much. So they judge based on the confidence that you show."

• That is how the old astrologer's "Mercury must be with Jupiter" created doubt — he said it with confidence.
• Say: somebody made a mistake; wrong panchangas were used in the old days; everything is standardised now; the positions can be checked in the sky against NASA's ephemeris.
• He has done pujas as a Moola native for years. People do not want to change what they are used to. He will not believe it at once.
• "Moola affects the father-in-law after marriage" is what the book says. But you cannot argue "the father-in-law was unaffected, so you are not Moola" — such a rule only raises a probability; it is never 100%.
• Jyeshtha–Moola is a gandanta either way, and the shanti has already been done.
• Here the rasi changes too (Scorpio, not Sagittarius), so transits against past events can confirm it.
