11th Lord in the Fourth House

Verse 124: lābho mātṛ-kulāt (gains from the mother's family); tīrtha-yātrā-kara (goes on pilgrimages); gṛha-bhūmi-sukhānvita (happiness of house and land).

• Gains from the mother's side. The planet's agenda is to fulfil desires; its resources are those of the house it sits in. In the 4th it uses the mother — her family, her job, her house, her place — to give the native what he wants.
• For the mother herself it is bad (Parāśara does not say this; it follows). From the 4th house as lagna this planet is the 8th lord in lagna. The mother may be short-lived or frail, or have many setbacks. "Mother is unfortunate, but the person himself is very fortunate with respect to mother."
• Pilgrimage. Travel is the 3rd house; religion is the 9th.
  • The planet has argala on the 3rd house from lagna — the body has to travel, so lagna's 3rd must be involved.
  • From the 9th house it is the 3rd lord in the 8th — a Viparīta Rāja Yoga like the 3rd lord in the 6th. The 8th is movement and instability.
  • The 3rd is also initiative and communication. So it need not be pilgrimage: he may go around teaching people how to pray, meditate or perform a ritual.
• House and land. The lord of fulfilment sits in the house of real estate and vehicles; he finds his fulfilment in those.
• A student's objection — from the 4th house it is the 8th lord in lagna. How do both hold? He has many houses and lands and does not stay in one: one house now, another five years later. The 8th lord also shows sudden gains in 4th-house matters.
• A student's question — the 11th lord is a functional malefic, so why are all these results good? He is the one planet who controls getting what you want. Whatever house he is in, he makes you gain through that house: brothers in the 3rd, mother and land in the 4th, children in the 5th. No planet can grant everything, and other planets in the house can spoil it. The question led to Part 5.

11th Lord in the Fifth House

Verse 125: bhavanti sukhinaḥ sutāḥ (the children are happy); vidyāvanto 'pi sacchīlāḥ (though learned, of good character); svayaṁ dharma-rataḥ sukhī (he himself is devoted to dharma and happy).

"Though learned" — the learned are often proud and behave badly. It seems to have been so in Parāśara's time too.

• Children happy. From the 5th house this planet is the 7th lord in lagna: a quadrant lord in lagna, not a 6th or 8th lord. Being a māraka, it can still bring trouble in its daśā — one of the children may even pass away. The verse is speaking of the other results.
• Children learned. Learning as a process is the 4th; accumulated knowledge, scholarship, is the 5th. Scholarship of children is the 5th from the 5th, the 9th house. From the 9th this planet is the 3rd lord in the 9th: initiative in scholarship, placed in the house of protection. Not all the children — some will be good scholars.
• Children of good character. Read as a good sense of dharma: the 9th from the 5th, which is lagna. From lagna this planet is the 11th lord in the 5th, the house of pūrva-puṇya. Pūrva-puṇya guides the children's dharma.
  • A student suggested the 10th, conduct. Also valid: the 10th from the 5th is the 2nd house. From the 2nd this planet is the 10th lord in the 4th, aspecting the 10th — a quadrant lord aspecting a quadrant. The children do good karma.
• He himself dharma-rata. The same logic as the children's scholarship: from the 9th house, the 3rd lord of initiative is in the 9th. His dharma is protected and he has a strong urge to uphold it. That is why the verse says rata and not just dhārmika — the root of rati: a mind strongly inclined that way. He is passionately dharmic.
• Sukhī — again not luxuries. From the 4th house this planet is the 8th lord in the 2nd, aspecting the 8th: sudden luxuries can come, but there is instability in them. Not a rosy placement for cars and bungalows. From lagna, the lord of fulfilment is in the house of pūrva-puṇya and has argala on lagna. The sukha of lagna is there, and the emotional stability of the 5th. He is contented and emotionally steady; he may or may not have luxuries.

11th Lord in the Sixth House

Verse 126: roga-samanvita (endowed with disease); krūra-buddhi (cruel-minded); pravāsī (lives far from home); śatrubhiḥ paripīḍita (tormented by enemies).

• Disease. From the 6th house this planet is the 6th lord in lagna; it is the bhāvāt bhāvam lord of the 6th. So far the 11th was read as fulfilment of desires. It has another side.

"The 11th house is also Hara-sthāna. It is 6th from 6th. It is Hara-sthāna, the form of Shiva which takes away things from you. Now that lord being in the 6th house, the house of diseases, it can give you diseases."

• Krūra-buddhi. The 11th is the house of friendliness. Its lord is put in the house of enmity: the planet whose agenda is to make friends is given a job where all it can do is make enemies. To fulfil desires it makes the person fight.
  • He has more fighting spirit than friendliness. Not cruel in the sense of a sadist — a ruthless fighter.
  • A student added that the 6th and 8th are the houses of cruelty, and this is the lord of the 6th-from-6th in the 6th. Accepted: that makes him more ruthless.
• Pravāsī. Living abroad is seen from the 9th and 12th (and the bādhaka-sthāna, left aside here) and from the 5th.
  • From the 9th house: the 3rd lord in the 10th — he takes initiative to work in a distant land.
  • From the 12th house of displacement: the 12th lord (its bhāvāt bhāvam lord) in the 7th, aspecting the 12th. The 3rd is travel, the 7th is long travel.
  • From the 5th house — motherland and patriotism: the 7th lord in the 2nd. The lord of one māraka-sthāna in the other is a powerful māraka. It makes the person unpatriotic or takes him away from the motherland. The 5th is also the house to watch for when a person returns to the native land.
  • PVNR on himself: he has the 11th lord in the 6th and is a pravāsī; so far, not many enemies.
• Tormented by enemies. The lord of the house of friends is in the house of enemies. Friends can turn into enemies. He fights and gets fought.

The second half of the 11th lord (houses 7–12) is left for the next class.
