BPHS Chapter 24 — 10th Lord in the Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Houses

The class continues Chapter 24 (effects of the house lords) at the verse on the 10th lord in the 7th. The method is the same throughout: take Parāśara's result, then find the house from which the placement explains it.

10th Lord in 7th House

Results in the verse: dāra-sukha (happiness from spouse); manasvī; guṇavān (virtuous); vāgmī (talker); satya-dharma-rata (devoted to truth and dharma).

• A good placement in general: the 10th lord shows reputation and social status. In any kendra or koṇa he gives good results.
• Marital bliss: the 7th is the house of marriage and a kendra lord sits in it. Counted from the 7th, he is the 4th lord of sukha placed in lagna. His agenda is to give comfort in the marriage.
• Manasvī: usually translated "intelligent". Literally it is "one who has a mind" — mindful, alert, compassionate.

"Somebody who is compassionate about other people, who has a mind, basically. He is not a robot."

• Why compassionate: from the 5th house of emotions he is the 6th lord in the 3rd — one upachaya lord in another upachaya. Very emotional. And the planet of his work in society sits in the 7th, the house of dealing with other people. So he is concerned about others and helpful.
• Vāgmī — talkative, not eloquent: three houses matter for talk. The 2nd is speech, the 3rd is communicating, the 7th is interacting with people. From the 2nd he is the 9th lord in the 6th — nothing great, so not the man who always finds the perfect word. From the 7th he is the 4th lord of comfort in lagna: he finds comfort in dealing with people. A chatterbox who looks for company. "He is talkative more than eloquent."
• Satya-dharma-rata: from the 9th he is the 2nd lord in the 11th. The 2nd from any house is its food, its resources. That is why the 10th is career — the work you do feeds your dharma (building a temple, learning astrology and helping a thousand people). So the 10th lord's agenda is to sustain the 9th, and here he sits in the 11th from the 9th, the house of fulfilment, with argala on it. The result is not a man with a fine sense of dharma but a man who carries his dharma out.

10th Lord in 8th House

Results in the verse: karma-hīna (without work, jobless); dīrghāyu (long-lived); para-nindā-parāyaṇa (always blaming others).

• Jobless: the 8th is fall, setback, instability. The lord of work there can mean no work.
• Or hard work: the 10th lord in the 8th has argala on his own 10th house (the 8th is the 11th from the 10th). So the same placement shows a job that needs hard work, like a shop owner, or a man who is never at rest — a workaholic.
• Do not predict joblessness from it: most people with this placement have a job. Expect trouble in the career, not the absence of one.

"If you see 10th lord in the 8th house, don't say you don't have a job in your life. Don't tell that to people. Most people who have 10th lord in the 8th house will have some job."

• Long life: the 8th is the house of longevity and a kendra lord is in it. Counted from the 8th, he is the 3rd lord of vitality sitting in lagna. The 10th is also a secondary house for longevity: a man with a lot of work to do in society is not taken away early.
• Blaming others: from the 5th (emotional state) he is the 6th lord of enmity in the 4th of comfort — quarrels sit in his emotional comfort. From the 6th (fights, enmity) he is the 5th lord in the 3rd. The 5th lord of any house promotes that house; the 3rd is initiative. He takes the initiative in picking quarrels.
• The 8th house and fights: being the 3rd from the 6th, the 8th is the house of initiative in quarrelling. "Somebody who is like a raging bull." Whether or not he blames people, he picks fights; he is not interested in peace with others.

10th Lord in 9th House

Results in the verse: born in a royal family he becomes a king; born in any other family he is equal to a king; endowed with wealth, children and the rest.

• Why so strong: the lord of the most important kendra is in the most important koṇa. The 9th of bhāgya holds the 10th lord of karma — the dharma–karma link, a rāja yoga. The same was said of the 9th lord in the 10th.
• Both lords together is better still: the 9th and 10th lords joined in the 9th, the 10th, or some other kendra or koṇa is better than one of them in the other's house.
• Wealth and children: no specific reason. From the 2nd nothing special shows; from the 5th he is only the 6th lord in the 5th. Parāśara is speaking of fortune in general. A man who lacks wealth, or a good marriage, or progeny has a blemish on his fortune. Here the fortune is without blemish, above all in his standing in society.
