Bhava Chart for Rectification — A Student's Chart

The Question

A student asked: when we rectify a chart, do we use the Rasi chart or the Bhava chart?

"If a planet is actually in the 4th house, even though you may think it is in the 5th house, it will give 4th house results. That applies to the natal chart as well as Tithi Pravesha charts."

• Rectify by houses. The question is always which house a planet occupies and which house it owns.
• A planet whose longitude is lower than the lagna's is in the previous bhava. The same holds from any other reference: Hora Lagna for money, Mars or Jupiter for brothers and so on.
• In a Tithi Pravesha chart a planet you take to be in the 8th may be in the 7th.
• No need to draw a separate bhava chart for each division. Read the usual chart and keep the divisional longitudes in mind. A small change of time can move the lagna in one division and push one more planet across.

The Chart and the Events

May 9, 1983, 1:48 PM IST, Andhra Pradesh, India. Leo lagna. The student's own working time is 1:49:44 PM.

Events: first left the home country in January 2001 (Mercury–Rahu); went abroad again in 2007. In Ketu dasha he has moved house 5 times in under 2 years.

Rasi

• Mercury is in the 9th, the Badhakasthana for Leo, and stays in the 9th by longitude.
• Rahu is in the 11th sign but in the 10th house.

D4 — Aquarius or Taurus Lagna?

At 1:48 PM the D4 lagna is 28°22' Aquarius, the very end of the sign. Mercury is at 28°49' in D4 and Jupiter also near 28°, so their houses turn on a small change of time.

Aquarius D4 (1:48 PM):

• Mercury (5th and 8th lord) is in the 12th house → going abroad in Mercury dasha fits.
• If the lagna degree crosses Mercury's, Mercury falls to the 11th house and going abroad stops making sense. So with Aquarius the lagna can be at most about half a degree higher.
• Rahu, the antardasha lord, is in the 4th house (5th sign). Apart from Rahu being a karaka for foreign matters, nothing strong.

Taurus D4 (about 1.5 minutes later): the D4 lagna jumps from Aquarius to Taurus, the next sign in D4, not to Pisces. "It is not linear."

• Mercury is in the 9th house → Mercury dasha giving foreign residence still fits.
• Rahu is in the 2nd house. Rahu alone shows no strong indication either way.
• Bhoga: from Mercury, Rahu is in the 6th. The 6th from Rahu is Scorpio. Scorpio is the 10th from Aquarius but the 7th from Taurus. The 7th is one of the houses of long journeys and foreign residence — 7th, 9th, 12th.
• Ketu is in the 8th house from Taurus. That explains five moves in under two years of Ketu dasha. Ketu in the 10th or 11th (Aquarius lagna) does not.

Conclusion: Taurus D4 explains Mercury–Rahu and Ketu better. The recorded time has an error; the birth is slightly later. The D4 lagna is then right on the border, and exactly how far to move the time is still to be settled.

D24 — Checked Alongside

• The same shift moves the D24 lagna from Capricorn to Aquarius. The student is a mechanical engineer and asked whether that still fits.
• Capricorn D24: 9th lord is Mercury, and Mars is with him.
• Aquarius D24: 9th lord is Venus. Mars has graha dṛṣṭi on Venus (7th aspect) and a full 4th aspect on the 9th house, Libra.
• Being with the 9th lord and aspecting the 9th lord are much alike. Mechanical engineering fits either way.
• Looking for future education in D24 is a separate exercise, not rectification.
• The student had also drawn a bhava chart from the Karakamsa in D9. The teacher: leave it. "We don't even know exactly what purpose it serves, so why experiment with it?"

Tithi Pravesha 2000–01

• Tithi Pravesha for 2000: May 1, 2000, 2:45:56 AM, at the birthplace. Hora Lord of the year: Sun.
• The journey was before January 10, 2001, in the Sun dasha of that year.
• Rasi (Aquarius lagna): Sun is 7th lord, in the 3rd sign and the 2nd house. As 7th lord he can give residence abroad.
• D4 (Scorpio lagna): Sun is in the 12th sign but the 11th house. On that alone he would not give foreign travel.
• The year carries the promise: Rahu and UL in the 9th house; 9th lord Moon in a watery sign, aspecting Sun; lagna lord Mars in the 7th house.
• So the Hora Lord delivered it. "If there are strong indications of foreign residence during the year, he can end up giving the result, being the Hora Lord" — and he is 7th lord in the Rasi.
• In the site's chart Moon and Sun are not in mutual aspect by sign (Pisces and Libra); by house they are in the 5th and 11th, opposite each other.

Tithi Pravesha as a limit on birth time: suppose a planet in the 9th house gave the journey, and a little more lagna would push it into the 8th. Then the lagna cannot be more than that. Here it does not narrow the time further.

D10 — The Student's Own Example

• His first job came in Ketu dasha, Venus antardasha.
• Sign-based D10 (Pisces lagna): Venus is 3rd and 8th lord in the 6th. A first job needs some link with the 5th house, some Purva Punya. This does not show it.
• By D10 longitude: Venus moves to the 5th house. Ketu and Mars are in the 10th house; Sun and Saturn fall in the 9th, with Jupiter.
• Mars and Ketu in the 10th fit a software field better than Saturn and Sun there.
• Asked which made more sense, he said: "The Bhava chart, absolutely."

How the Teacher Reached This

• Rectification can be done with sign-based or house-based charts. The difference is clarity.
• It is like poor eyesight and eyeglasses. "It is not nonsense. I was using glasses, but I did not realize they were not perfect for my eyesight. Now I have other glasses which seem more perfect. Even these may not be perfect."
• The fair test: rectify a chart as well as possible with sign-based charts, then separately as well as possible with bhava-based charts, natal and Tithi Pravesha. Do not reuse one rectification for both. Then see which explains more. It is a subjective judgement; there is no objective formula. He did this on many charts over a long time, not one or two.
• Reliable birth data is scarce. And the knowledge received over the last 10–15 years has "a genuine core, but also a corrupted part", which makes research hard.
• His conclusion: bhavas taken this way are superior and more consistent than what is normally done. If a chart does not make sense this way, it may need rectification.
• In his own build of the software he can right-click any body — lagna, a planet, Hora Lagna — in any divisional chart and show bhavas from it, with planets that have changed house in another colour. Not released yet; it is easy to do by hand from the divisional longitudes.

Nakshatra Lordship — Critical Discussion

Student question: is the ruling planet the same for all four padas of a nakshatra, even when the nakshatra spans two rasis?

Answer: yes. The nakshatra is one; the padas are navamsas. The whole of Punarvasu is ruled by Jupiter — if you mean Vimshottari rulership.

Vimshottari Lordship Is a Dasha Mapping

• Vimshottari is one of many schemes. Ashtottari and the others map the nakshatras differently.
• It is a mapping: this nakshatra → this dasha. Its purpose is to divide life into periods.
• To say Punarvasu has a significant relationship with Jupiter, or Pushya with Saturn, is questionable.
• No Maharshi spoke of nakshatra lords in that sense. Parasara only said which nakshatras go with which dasas in Vimshottari. In another scheme it changes entirely.
• The precedent is in "modern classics" of the last few hundred years — the dark periods of Kali Yuga for Sanatana Dharma and for Jyotish. Not reliable.
• For the last 100 years people have judged transits and dasas by nakshatra lord. It may be a corruption that arose because Vimshottari was the only dasha people knew, so its mapping was taken as the general lordship.
• Conclusions about a person's nature, life or character drawn only from the Vimshottari nakshatra lord are questionable. "It is not based on sound philosophy."

"That is just for the purpose of dividing life into periods. It is not that Punarvasu has some avinabhava sambandha with Jupiter."

The Abhisheka Nakshatra Claim

• The teacher was criticising a principle from a book on nakshatras: if the lord of the Abhisheka nakshatra (by Vimshottari) is the Atmakaraka, a high-level soul has reincarnated.
• The Abhisheka nakshatra belongs to the 28-nakshatra scheme. That scheme has Abhijit, which lies partly in Uttarashadha and partly in Shravana.
• Who owns Abhijit? Parasara did not say the Sun because most of it is in Uttarashadha. He gave no lord for Abhijit at all. Vimshottari lordships rest on 27 stars.
• A 28-scheme nakshatra with a 27-scheme lordship does not fit. "It is illogical. It is not systematic."

What Can Be Done

• Nakshatra chakras of several kinds, and several ways of seeing planetary influence on nakshatras.
• The devatas: Punarvasu is ruled by Aditi, Pushya by Brihaspati, Ashlesha by the Sarpas, and they carry those energies — just as an amsa is said to be ruled by Indra and so on.
• Which planet lords a nakshatra is the questionable part.
• The Vimshottari table itself should be known by heart. The software shows each planet's nakshatra lord and sub-lord on the KP tab.
