TP + Narayana Dasha Applied — Career Change, Unexpected Event & Marriage

Example chart

Event: an important change in career during the week just over (the class is in early February 2005). The native tells what happened only at the end.

The Tithi Pravesha of 2004

• Tithi Pravesha: August 22, 2004, 5:23:15 AM. Cancer lagna.
• Hora lord = Mars, the ruler of the year. He shows the theme of the year.
• D-10 lagna = Scorpio. Mars is its lagna lord and sits in the 2nd house of resources.
• The teacher sets the Hora lord aside. The ruler of the year gives the most important event of the year, but in his own dasha. His dasha is not running now.
• Running: Mercury dasha, Mercury antardasha. The event fell between January 25 and February 4, at the end of Mercury dasha. Mercury is the one who gave the result.

Mercury in the Tithi Pravesha D-10

• Mercury owns the 8th and the 11th from Scorpio lagna. He is in Libra, the 12th house.
• 8th lord: his agenda is change. A student asks whether the 8th lord always gives a bad shock. No. It can be a good shock. Anything unexpected and unplanned is given by the 8th lord.
• Owning the 8th and the 11th, Mercury is a functional malefic for this lagna. A malefic in the 12th is good. The 8th lord in the 12th is a (viparita) raja yoga.
• So in the professional environment: a change, a disturbance, something unexpected — and it may be for his good.

A10 — the formal job

• A10 and A2 are in Libra with Mercury.
• The 10th house is the work you do. A10, the Rajapada, is the manifestation of that work: the formal classification of the job.
• "He is doing good work, he is an engineer" is not tangible. "He is working as a senior quality assurance engineer, as a senior manager, as a director" is tangible. So-and-so engineer at so-and-so company — that is A10.
• 8th lord in A10: change, disturbance or uncertainty in the formal job. A promotion or a demotion. The role or the title changes. Or the title stays and the work changes — from development to quality assurance or diagnostics.

Mercury from the Arudha Lagna of the D-10

• From the Arudha Lagna (Capricorn), Mercury is in the 10th.
• A student objects: Mercury is the 8th lord, a malefic — how can this be good? The teacher: for the kind of image, take the natural planet. Mercury shows a smart person who analyses well. For what happens, take the functional nature. Use both.
• Mercury is in Libra. Venus is his natural friend. Venus is also within three signs of him (in Sagittarius), so a temporary friend too. Friend both ways = adhimitra. Mercury is in an adhimitra's sign.
• Image at work in this period: intelligent, good at analysis and logic. But the same Mercury is the 8th lord, so there is uncertainty about what he is doing and how.

"When you see the 8th lord associating with the 10th house, or A10, or the 10th from Arudha Lagna — any one of them, or two of them, or all three — there will be some big changes during that particular phase in career."

A2 — the tangible resources at work

• The 2nd house is resources. A2 is the tangible resources at your command for the work: the computer you are given, equipment, software, hardware, people. A colleague who tests your work is not your subordinate, but he and his equipment are a resource for your work.
• 8th lord on A2: change or uncertainty about those resources. You expect to get a particular person, someone else wants him, you worry — and finally you may get him.

12th house — giving up

• A planet in the 12th shows giving: you give something up, you compromise, you lose something.
• Because it is the 8th lord who is in the 12th, what is given up is the bad.

"You can't let tensions go unless you have some tensions. So Mercury will give some tensions, but at the end, the 8th lord being in the 12th, you are giving away those tensions. He will give a lot of suffering, a lot of frustration, but finally the frustration will be overcome and you will actually gain. The tension will be somebody else's."

• The 12th can also mean a foreign land. Any yoga in the 12th house can manifest in a faraway place. Here the class knows the native's circumstances for the year and rules that out.

The Tithi Pravesha rasi chart — exchange of results

• The D-10 is the professional environment. The rasi chart is the physical existence. What does the event do there?
• In the Tithi Pravesha rasi chart (Cancer lagna) Mercury is the 3rd and 12th lord in the 2nd house, Leo, with Sun, Mars and Jupiter.
• Four planets together. Order of beneficence: Jupiter, Mercury, Sun, Mars.
• First exchanges with last, second with third: Jupiter gives the results of Mars and Mars those of Jupiter; Mercury gives the results of Sun and Sun those of Mercury.
• So Mercury gives Sun's results. Sun is the 2nd lord in the 2nd house — money and resources, well placed.
• From the Arudha Lagna of this chart all four planets are in the 11th: a gain, a rise in material status.
• Put with the D-10: a positive change.

Sahamas

The native insists on sahamas. Mercury is at 8°47' Leo.

• No sahama in Leo is close to Mercury.
• In Gemini and Virgo, the signs Mercury owns, there are many — far more than the usual two or three: Asha (hopes and desires), Bhratri (brothers), Raja (position; at 2°48' Virgo), Jiva (livelihood), Shraddha (dedication), Vyapara (trade), Artha (money).

How a planet relates to a sahama:

• A sahama close to the planet, in the sign he occupies. He has no responsibility towards it, but he has the power to influence it. He is capable of giving its results.

"It's like I am sitting in this room. It's not my room. But I can alter it. I can move this table from here to there. I can maybe break a chair if I am bad, or if I am good, bring a new chair. He doesn't have any responsibility towards it, but those are the resources he is given."

• A sahama in a sign the planet owns. That is his responsibility, his agenda. He wants to give its results.

"Even though I am sitting in this house, if something happens in my house, I am concerned about it. I will be making phone calls to fix the problem."

• Whether he can deliver on the sahamas in his own signs depends on who he is with and what resources he has. The lord of the sign holding Vivaha Sahama can give marriage if he is with Venus, or with the 7th lord, or in the 7th house.
• Sahamas a planet aspects also count; the class leaves them out to keep the list short.

Which of them will fructify here?

• See who dominates among the planets with Mercury. Sun is the lord of the house and a natural king.

"When I am at a place with the landlord of that place, everything I do is decided by that landlord."

• Sun is the karaka of power and position, and here the 2nd lord of money and resources. So expect Raja Sahama and Artha Sahama: some effect on position — the number of people reporting to him, that kind of thing — and some effect on money.
• Vyapara Sahama? Mars is the planet of enterprise — the risk-taker, the military man. Mercury is the trader, the Vaishya. If Mars and Mercury were the strong ones, the results of Vyapara Sahama could be given. Here Sun is the strongest, and Sun is not a trader.
• A student suggests working out sahamas from the longitudes of a divisional chart. The teacher: a good idea, try it; he has not researched it.

Amsa ruler

• In the D-10 Mercury is in Yama's amsa.
• Yama is the god of dharma. He upholds dharma without passion. If someone is destined to die, the life is finished; if he is destined to suffer for a hundred years, he is sent to suffer. Punishment is meted out without attachment.
• So the changes may require the native to be dispassionate — to go through what is happening without emotion.

What happened

• On Sunday someone called and set up an interview for Wednesday. The result came on Thursday morning, the offer letter on Thursday evening, and he gave notice at his existing job on Friday. Four days. Until the week before he had no clue it was coming.
• The new salary is lower, but more is left in his pocket: the commute falls from about 60 miles to 7 or 8.
• The teacher: the 8th lord in A10 said the tangible, formal side of the job would change — principal engineer to something else, or an engineer at one company to an engineer at another. That happened. A change of job, unexpected, and more money left over.
• With a viparita raja yoga, he adds, the rise usually comes at somebody else's cost.

Narayana Dasha Analysis

A student asks whether Narayana Dasha can be used in a Tithi Pravesha chart. It can, but Tithi Ashtottari is much better. Narayana Dasha of the natal chart gives the broader picture, not last week. But if last week's event is a major one in the whole year, it shows there too.

Dashas run from the 7th house (Gemini). The native is in Capricorn Narayana Dasha, Scorpio antardasha.

The three steps, which the teacher says give 80% of the results:

1. Where is Narayana — the dasha sign, seen from the natal lagna.
2. Take the progressed lagna and judge the whole chart from it.
3. The dasha entry chart (Dasha Pravesha Chakra), for the individual antardashas.

Step 1 — Narayana in Capricorn:

• Capricorn is the 2nd house from the natal lagna. It holds the 2nd lord Saturn, strong in his own sign, and the lagna lord Jupiter.
• He will make money and have resources.
• Jupiter is also the 4th lord: comforts improve.
• Lagna lord: "Lagna is your very intelligence." Intelligence improves in this dasha.

Step 2 — progressed lagna Cancer: Because the dashas run from the 7th, Capricorn is the progressed 7th house. The progressed lagna — the dasha lagna — is Cancer. All houses below are counted from Cancer.

• 8th — Ketu in Aquarius. Ketu is the karaka of occult knowledge and the 8th is the house of occult knowledge.

"If you see Ketu in the 8th house from dasha sign, you can say that there will be some occult study. But of course, if the person is not into occult at all, it won't happen. See if that indication is there in the natal chart. If it is there, during this dasha it will be at a peak."

Aquarius is a philosophical sign: interest in philosophy and occult subjects.

• 2nd — Sun and Rahu in Leo. The 2nd lord Sun is eclipsed by Rahu, the 8th lord. The 2nd house is weak. Family life is not smooth; there are many changes and upheaval.
• 3rd — Mercury and Mars in Virgo. The 3rd is a good house for malefics. Mercury takes the colour of his company: with benefics a benefic, with malefics a malefic. With Mars he is a malefic. So two malefics in the 3rd, one of them exalted (Mercury, the 3rd lord), the other the yogakaraka (Mars, lord of the 5th and 10th). A period of recognition, good position and good karma.
• 10th lord in the 3rd. The 3rd is the house of short breaks and short jobs. In general such a person can be on contracts or in temporary jobs, with small breaks in career. (Not so for this native, the teacher notes.) Or he changes places, or travels a lot on the job, since the 3rd is the house of travel.

"10th lord's agenda is to give work. Being in the 3rd house, what he is capable of giving is travel. So he will use the travel for work. That is how planets use the resources given to them based on which house they are in, to further their agenda, which is based on which houses they own."

• 5th — Moon debilitated in Scorpio. The 5th is the house of emotions, wisdom and judgment. Moon, the planet of the mind and here the lagna lord, is debilitated there. A dasha of emotional drain.
• 7th — Jupiter and Saturn in Capricorn. This shows the desires of the dasha (next section).

The 7th from the Dasha Lagna = the Desires of the Dasha

"The aspirations of a person are seen from the 7th house from the dasha lagna. 7th house is the house of desires."

• For the kind of desire, look only at the nature of the planet, not at the houses he owns.
• Sun in the 7th from the dasha lagna: a strong desire for power. The person is power-hungry.
• Mercury there: hungry for knowledge and learning.
• Here Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter: desire for traditional knowledge, Vedic knowledge, Vedic wisdom. Saturn, the planet of detachment and renunciation: a desire to get away from all the materialism.
• Both are retrograde. Retrograde planets show strong desires from past lives.

"When you see any retrograde planet in the 7th house from the dasha sign, the desire will come like a flood, as though it has been buried for a few lives or for a long time."

Jupiter as 6th and 9th Lord — Jaya Yoga Broken, Raja Yoga for Dharma

Now the same two planets are read by the houses they own from Cancer.

• Jupiter owns the 6th and the 9th. He is debilitated and retrograde.
• A debilitated planet that is retrograde gives results as if exalted. An exalted planet that is retrograde gives results as if debilitated.
• 6th lord. Jaya Yoga = 6th lord debilitated and 10th lord strong (strictly, exalted). Here the 10th lord Mars is not exalted but is with an exalted planet, so Jaya Yoga is there from Cancer. But Jupiter's debilitation is cancelled by retrogression. A 6th lord acting as exalted is not good. Jaya Yoga bhanga: a yoga for victory with a break in it.

"Things will go smoothly, but there can be some big disappointments also."

• 9th lord. The 9th is the house of dharma. A debilitated 9th lord is bad; one acting as exalted is good. So the same cancellation that is bad for material things and for overcoming enemies is good for dharma.
• 9th lord with the 7th lord in the 7th. Jupiter is with Saturn, the 7th lord. 7th lord and 9th lord together is a raja yoga. It has no name. (It is not Vimala Yoga. Harsha = 6th lord in the 6th, Sarala = 8th lord in the 8th, Vimala = 12th lord in the 12th.) It joins the 9th, dharma, with the 7th — desire, interactions, associations.

"When it comes to dharmic interactions, interactions relating to dharma, there will be a Raj Yoga during this dasha."

The Dasha Entry Chart and the Antardashas

The entry chart of Capricorn dasha has Gemini lagna. The houses below are counted from Gemini. (The class does not give the entry date. Cast for the solar return of September 1994, the chart has every placement the class reads.)

Libra antardasha (September 2003 – September 2004):

• Libra is the 5th house. It holds Jupiter, Rahu and Venus. Venus is in his own sign.
• Jupiter with Rahu = Guru Chandala Yoga. Venus is the teacher of the demons and Rahu is his favourite. The two together pound on Jupiter. This is Guru Chandala Yoga aided by Venus. Jupiter is struggling.
• Do not only ask which house the antardasha sign is. See which house lords sit in it.
• Children — the 5th house, and Venus is the 5th lord, strong and helped by Rahu. A good period for the child, in a Venus–Rahu way. Rahu with Venus is not Rahu alone: the guru keeps the rakshasa in check. Venus is also a great yogi — the son of Bhrigu, and Vishnu says that among the maharshis he is Bhrigu. Venus, Saturn and Ketu are the planets of tapasvi yoga. With a strong Venus on the 5th the child may become very disciplined, or take to yoga. With three planets fighting there, expect big changes and important events in the child's life. D-7 gives the clearer result.
• Spouse — Jupiter is the 7th lord, and he is destroyed there by Venus and Rahu. Not a good antardasha for the spouse or the marital relationship. The relationship may be fine and the wife unwell, or she may be healthy and he has tension about her. To tell which, go to Navamsa.
• Dharma — Rahu is the 9th lord, strong with Venus. A very good antardasha for dharma.
• Career — Jupiter is also the 10th lord. A student asks whether a 10th lord under Guru Chandala Yoga can give career trouble.

"If you see Jupiter associating with the 10th house and having Guru Chandala Yoga, you can say there will be some death-like situation in career."

A student adds that it can come from the boss, because Rahu is the 9th lord. The teacher agrees. He recalls that the native was laid off once before.

• Narayana Dasha of the rasi chart is valid for everybody born in the same two hours. The pattern is shared. The exact manifestation depends on Navamsa, Dasamsa and the rest.

Scorpio antardasha (running):

• Scorpio is the 6th house. Its two lords: Ketu in the 11th house of gains, Mars in lagna.

"The lord Mars, whose agenda is obstacles, he is sitting on your head. Lagna is your head, your intelligence. So you have to use your head always to ward off evils, fight off troubles."

• An antardasha of obstacles, some enmities, a lot of hard work — and he overcomes them.
• A student asks about the entry chart of the Scorpio antardasha for a finer division. It can be done, but for now stay with the antardasha. To focus on a particular week, go to Tithi Pravesha. "That is how we will do for a few more months."

The native confirms the rest as well — the emotional drain and the other changes. "Everything is true."

Example chart

Event: December 29, 2004, about 2 PM. The native says only that it concerns career and is "more significant than drinking milk".
Tithi Pravesha: November 22, 2004, 1:40:47 AM. Hora lord = Jupiter. Rasi lagna at the very end of Leo — 21 seconds from Virgo (see the Border Chart Rule). D-10 lagna Taurus.
Running: Mercury dasha, Jupiter antardasha.

What Mercury Dasha Promises (D-10)

• Mercury, lord of the 2nd and 5th, is in the 12th house (Aries) with Saturn.
• Two planets together exchange results. In career Mercury gives Saturn's results.
• Saturn owns the 9th and the 10th from Taurus lagna. When one planet owns both, you do not call it Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga — it is not a raja yoga. You call him a yogakaraka: a good planet, who brings luck and success whichever house he is in.
• He is in the 12th: giving up something, losing something, compromising. Some letting go in career.
• A student reads it as giving up hard work. No. A planet does not give away his natural signification; he gives away the houses he owns. 9th lord in the 12th: he can give up, ignore, his past. 10th lord in the 12th: he can give up his work, or some position. Saturn in the 12th does not mean giving up hard work. He will have to work hard.

Saturn from the Arudha Lagna

From the Arudha Lagna of the D-10 (Aquarius), Saturn is in the 3rd.

2nd from Arudha Lagna (an aside): the 2nd is the house of food — what nourishes and builds the image. Saturn there is bad: he has not enough food to give the image. Jupiter there is good. A natural benefic in the 2nd from Arudha Lagna is good, a natural malefic bad.

3rd from Arudha Lagna:

• Lagna is you. Arudha Lagna is not you. It is the image in people's minds.
• Benefics given charge of initiative in the image do not give it. A benefic in the 3rd from Arudha Lagna: seen as someone with no initiative, who does not care whether he gets a thing or not. Right for a sannyasi. Bad for a working person.
• Malefics there make you look bold. Mars: very bold. Saturn: selfish, pushing hard to get things for himself. Rahu: someone who can cheat, who will do anything to others to get what he wants.
• The man of whom people say "if he wants something, he will get it" probably has malefics in the 3rd and 6th from Arudha Lagna.

"What is good for the goose is not good for the gander. That applies very correctly in the case of Arudha Lagna."

• A debilitated malefic acts as a benefic. Saturn debilitated in the 3rd from Arudha Lagna: he seems to have a lot of initiative, but it fizzles out with time.
• Debilitated and retrograde: the debilitation is cancelled. He acts as if exalted. Here Saturn is debilitated in Aries and retrograde. Result: ups and downs in initiative, but overall he appears an achiever, a go-getter materially.

Putting the two together: the 9th and 10th lord in the 12th house of giving up, but well placed from Arudha Lagna.

"It will involve some kind of giving up on his part, but which does not make him look like a loser — which actually makes him look like a winner."

That is the result of Mercury dasha as a whole, not of the particular day.

The Day — Mercury–Jupiter

• Bhoga. From Mercury, Jupiter is in the 7th. The 7th from Jupiter is the 12th house. What is experienced is in the 12th: some loss, some giving up.
• A student guesses that he quit. The teacher: quitting needs the 8th house (long break) or the 3rd (short break) to stand out. The 12th alone shows only giving up something in the job. Compare the first chart: there Mercury was in the 12th and was also the 8th lord, lord of a break — so that native resigned in his antardasha. Here Mercury has nothing to do with the 8th.
• A student adds: Jupiter sits in the 6th but owns the 11th, the house of gains — some gain is given up.
• Paka. The antardasha lord Jupiter is in the 6th. The way he exercises his intelligence follows the house of the antardasha lord: he uses it to fight.
• Amsa ruler. Mercury is in Indra's amsa: a rise in power or an exertion of power.

Sahamas (rasi chart):

• Mercury is at 27° Scorpio. In Scorpio: Jiva and Karma (and Bhratri, which the class drops). Mercury has the opportunity to affect the livelihood and the work.
• In the signs Mercury owns: Shatru Sahama. At first the teacher sees nothing activating it. A student points out that the Bhoga in the rasi chart is Cancer, which holds Saturn, the 6th lord. The teacher accepts it: Shatru Sahama is possible too.

What happened

• An argument with the colleague who shares his office — a colleague and friend of five years. It reached boiling point; the two nearly came to blows. The manager did not intervene.
• He did not leave the job that day. He had long ago decided to leave it and go back to India — the house was sold the previous year and the family was already in India. He had meant to stay till June. Now he decided to stay only till March.
• Bhoga in the 12th: giving up, a compromise. Paka in the 6th: through a fight.

When Will He Leave? — Breaks in Career

• Houses of a break in career: the 3rd is a short break, the 8th a long break.
• Jupiter is the lord of the 8th house. Ketu is in the 8th — the planet who dissipates things, who burns things away.
• Ketu is also the 7th lord (co-lord of Scorpio).

"7th lord in 8th house is a combination for alpayu in natal charts. If you see 7th lord in 8th house or 8th lord in 7th house, such a person will have a short life. In a Tithi Pravesha chart, if you see that combination in Dasamsa, there can be some death-like thing in career."

• So a break in career during the year. Jupiter is not only the 8th lord but the dispositor of such a Ketu. He has that power.
• Jupiter's dasha comes about March 21 to May 28. He may slip by a month or so, but before May 28 he is likely to leave the job and go back to India.
• Rahu's dasha (the period of the original June plan): Rahu is in the 2nd and aspects the 8th (the 7th aspect). A malefic aspecting the 8th can give a break. Jupiter is far more capable of it.
• The native has given notice: his last day is March 11, in Saturn dasha. It is possible — Saturn is the 10th lord in the 12th, giving up the work. But the teacher would have picked Jupiter.

"Even after he leaves, there may still be a few mails for him — how do we do this, what about this. The complete detachment, the cut-off, is likely in Jupiter Dasha rather than Saturn Dasha."

• If something comes up and he postpones by a week or two, that would fit. "Otherwise you can always rectify the birth chart."

Going Back to the Motherland — the 5th House

• Travelling abroad in general: the 9th lord.
• Going back to the motherland: lagna and the 5th house, and the planets associated with the 5th.
• As a rule to carry: the 5th lord, the lagna lord and the planets in the 5th show going back to the motherland.
• The 5th is the house of emotions and the house of patriotism. You go back to your roots out of emotion.
• The philosophical reading: the 5th is the house of purva punya. You go back because of your purva punya.
• Here the choice comes down to Ketu and Jupiter, and the teacher picks Jupiter. (In the Tithi Pravesha rasi chart Jupiter is the 5th lord from Leo lagna.)

Example chart

The puzzle: her father comes in 1988, when she is 17, and asks when his daughter will marry. Use Narayana Dasha only. Two or three candidate periods will do, as long as the right one is among them.
Narayana Dasha runs from the 7th house, Aries. So it is a progression of the 7th house: the 7th from the dasha sign is the progressed lagna.

Leo Dasha — Can It Give Marriage?

• In Leo dasha the progressed lagna is Aquarius. The 7th from it is Leo.
• Leo holds Venus, the karaka of marriage, and Sun, who is the 7th lord from Aquarius. (Mercury is there too.)
• A student objects: Venus is weakened by Sun. True, a little. But it depends on Sun's agenda.
• If Sun were the 6th lord, he would dominate Venus and spoil it.

"6th lord always wants to give bachelorhood. 6th house is the house of brahmacharya. That is why Venus has Marana Karaka Sthana there."

• A 6th lord Sun in the 7th with Venus: he is given charge of marriage by sitting in the 7th, but his agenda is the 6th. Venus is suppressed. The person is unlikely to marry in that period.
• Here the one who weakens the karaka has the same agenda as the karaka. The house lord is the people manager and the karaka is the project manager. Both managers of marriage are together in the 7th.

"Both are together and both have the same agenda. So because of that, there is a very strong chance of marriage during the dasha."

• She did marry in Leo dasha.

Which Antardasha? — the Dasha Entry Chart

The entry chart of Leo dasha has Taurus lagna. (The class does not give its date. Cast for the solar return of September 11, 1989, the chart has every placement the class reads.)

• A student starts on Mars being with Mercury and an exchange of results. The teacher stops him: that is for the planetary dashas (Vimshottari, Tithi Ashtottari). Paka and Bhoga have not been taught for Narayana Dasha. Here the antardashas are of signs. See which house the sign is and which house lords are in it.
• The house of marriage in the entry chart is Scorpio, the 7th.
• Scorpio has two lords. Mars is in the 5th house (Virgo). Ketu is in the 4th (Leo), with an enemy in an enemy's house, and is not likely to give marriage. Mars is the one.
• Candidates accepted in class: Aquarius, Scorpio, Virgo. (Virgo holds the 7th lord Mars. Rahu is in Aquarius; the recording is unclear on the reason given for it.)
• She married in Scorpio antardasha. It is the 7th house, so it can give marriage. Simple.

"Go easy on the arudha padas in the Dasha Pravesha Chakra. You can use them, but go easy on them. Just look at the house."

Capricorn Antardasha (September 1994 – September 1995)

Something important happened in this antardasha. The class guesses from the same entry chart.

• Capricorn is the 9th house, and it holds Moon, the 3rd lord.
• Guesses: she travelled to fulfil her dharma; she travelled for her father. The teacher asks what else the 9th shows. Fortune. The antardasha of the 9th house can be when fortune blooms.
• The 9th can give long-distance travel. Could she have left her mother country for the first time? Very much.
• A student adds: from Aquarius, the progressed lagna of Leo dasha, Capricorn is the 12th — long travel.
• 3rd lord in it: a lot of travel, a lot of initiative.
• The lord of Capricorn, Saturn, is in the 8th house (Sagittarius): unexpected trouble, instability, anxiety.
