Satya and Maya in Jyotish — Philosophical Foundation & Remedial Principles

PVNR's philosophical foundation for Jyotish: Satya (ultimate reality) and Maya (illusion) are the two layers the chart operates in. The chart shows Maya — the experienced reality, not the ultimate truth. Remedial measures: the philosophy behind prescribing remedies — gems work at the physical level (slow, long-term), mantras at the subtle level, yagnas and pujas at the causal level. Match the remedy level to the urgency and the person's stage of consciousness. Never prescribe tamasic remedies.

"Signs are circumstances and situations — they are inanimate. Planets are animate — they have life force. The attitude with which you cope with circumstances — that comes from the lord of the sign, not the sign itself."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Philosophical Foundation — Satya and Maya in Jyotish

PVNR uses this lesson to explain a profound philosophical principle:

Two Realities

  • Satya (Truth): the permanent, unchanging reality behind all appearances
  • Maya (Illusion): the world of appearances, manifestations, individual beings

Jyotish Mapping

Jyotish ElementReality LevelMeaning
Houses (bhavas)Satya/Maya boundaryInanimate circumstances; the stage
House lords (grahas)SatyaUniversal intelligence applied to that domain
Bhava Arudhas (A1, A2...)MayaTangible, visible manifestation of circumstances
Graha Arudhas (L1, L2...)Maya boundaryIndividual person emerging from universal intelligence

"When you think the intelligence within me and the intelligence within my wife are different, you are in Maya. In Satya, they are the same Narayana."

"Shiva is Satya, but Parvati-Shakti is Maya. Narayana is Satya, but Lakshmi is Maya."

"The same Shiva is within all of us. When you look at the 7th lord, don't think it is only your intelligence. It is your wife's intelligence also. It is the intelligence of all people who are involved in your relationships."

Practical takeaway:

  • House lords (in the truth/satya world) show the universal quality being applied to a life domain
  • Graha arudhas (in the maya world) show specific, individual people who carry that quality
  • Both are necessary for complete analysis

Remedial Measures — Principles Behind the Prescriptions

How to Prescribe Remedies

  1. Identify the troubled area (in this case: marriage, mental peace)
  2. Identify the house governing that area (marriage = UL; mental peace = 4H/lagna)
  3. Identify the lord of that house and the lord of the UL
  4. That lord shows the form of God to pray to:
    • Mercury → Vishnu (preserver, maintainer)
    • Ketu → Ganesha (remover of obstacles, also Rudra energy)
    • Saturn → Narayana in form of Venkateshwara/Balaji (Shiva-Vishnu combined)
    • Moon → Krishna (waxing Moon in Vichari sign → Krishna specifically)
  5. The day is determined by the lord:
    • Mercury → Wednesday; Moon → Monday; Venus → Friday; Saturn → Saturday
  6. Fast = not eating (or eating only sattvic foods: fruits, milk)
  7. Prayer at end of the fast day = the most potent moment

The Level of Intervention

  • Some charts have minor negative influences → simple puja/prayer resolves it
  • Some charts have severe negative influences → "there is not really much you can do"
  • "When the chart itself has lots of weakness (like Moon + Saturn in lagna and L1-L2 enmity), you can give relief but not complete reversal"
  • The primary goal is always: bring mental peace and happiness, not necessarily keep the marriage legally intact

On Advising Divorce

  • PVNR's strict position: Never advise someone to get divorced
  • "It is not good on our part as astrologers to advise divorce. It is terrible karma."
  • The one exception in his career: when the husband was not interested in marriage to a woman and was causing extreme suffering to a pious woman
  • "Even then, I consider it bad karma on my part."
  • In all normal cases: give remedies, give strength, never break what the person has
