Rashi Drishti — Sign-Based Aspects
Sign-based aspects (Rashi Drishti): movable signs aspect all fixed signs (except adjacent), fixed signs aspect all movable signs (except adjacent), dual signs aspect all other dual signs. Why Shiva governs Sthira (fixed) signs. How Rashi Drishti differs from Graha Drishti: it is the aspect of the sign itself, not the planet within. Essential for reading yogas involving entire signs.
"Shiva rules Sthira not because "destruction is stability" but because the ultimate stability comes when the ego, tamas, and ignorance within us are destroyed. True stillness (Moksha) is Shiva's domain."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Review: Graha Drishti (Planetary Aspect)
Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself because the 7th is the house of desire. Graha Drishti = what the planet desires to influence.
- Whether the desire will fructify depends on Dashas (phases of life: Maha Dasha, Antar Dasha, Pratyantar Dasha, etc.).
- Whether the desire is good or bad depends on the planet's inherent nature and its role in the specific horoscope.
Special aspects recap:
- Jupiter: 5th, 7th, 9th
- Mars: 4th, 7th, 8th
- Saturn: 3rd, 7th, 10th
Clarification on Fractional Aspects
According to Parasara, the special aspects (5th, 9th for Jupiter; 4th, 8th for Mars; 3rd, 10th for Saturn) are actually available to all planets — but only as fractional Drishti (25%, 50%, or 75%). For Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn, these specific aspects are at 100%. For other planets, they are partial. This is why in practice, only the three special aspects are considered.
Rahu & Ketu: Relationships Clarification
The dictum "Shanivad Rahu, Kujavad Ketu" (Rahu is like Saturn, Ketu is like Mars) applies in a general sense — not specifically to relationships.
PVR's recommendation: For both Rahu and Ketu, use Saturn's relationship table. Whoever is Saturn's friend, is Rahu and Ketu's friend. Whoever is Saturn's enemy, is Rahu and Ketu's enemy.
Both Rahu and Ketu are good friends of Saturn (confirmed in the Ashtottara Shatanamastotram of Rahu and Ketu). Rahu and Ketu are also friends of each other — "but friends who can never meet" (always 180° apart).
Planetary Colors
| Planet | Color | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Orange, shades of red, pink | Various shades of red including orange |
| Moon | White | Shweta Varna |
| Mars | Blood red (dark red) | Rakta Varna |
| Mercury | Green | The green of grass and leaves |
| Jupiter | Yellow | Pitambara (yellow-robed) — why Rishis wear yellow |
| Venus | White | Shweta Ambara, Shweta Varna |
| Saturn | Black and blue | Krishna Varna; shares blue with Rahu |
| Rahu | Blue (shared with Saturn) | Represents ultraviolet in the spectrum |
| Ketu | Gray (technically has no body/no color) | Represents infrared in the spectrum |
The seven primary colors that make white light correspond to the seven planets. Rahu and Ketu, being invisible (Chhaya Grahas), represent the invisible parts of the spectrum — ultraviolet (Rahu) and infrared (Ketu). This parallels Saturn-Rahu and Mars-Ketu: blue → ultraviolet, red → infrared.
Practical use: These colors are used to predict things like the color of a person's car, favorable colors, etc. They do not mean a person with Lagna in Mercury's sign will be green-skinned.
Do Gods Have Horoscopes?
Yes. Sri Rama's horoscope is given in the classics. Even Lord Narasimha has a horoscope. When you do Satyanarayana Vratam and pray to each planet, each planet's Gotra, Tithi of birth, and Nakshatra of birth are recited — confirming that even planets themselves have horoscopes.
Gradations of Raja Yoga (from BPHS, Rajayoga Chapter)
Parasara graded the intensity of Raja Yoga:
- Ordinary king — Raja Yoga planets in certain amshas
- Emperor — Raja Yoga planets in higher amshas
- Emperor of the entire earth — even higher; Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira) had this level; Parasara predicted a future king named Salivahana would have the same
- Vishnu's avatars (Rama, Krishna) — even higher amsha placements
- Brahma himself — the highest level
This shows that the concept of horoscopes extends to the highest levels of creation — even Brahma has one. Only the Paramatma / Narayana / Sadashiva / Brahman (the supreme being, by whatever name) may not have a horoscope.
The Holistic Nature of Planets
The physical bodies we see in the sky are only one aspect of the planets. In their complete form:
- Sun = the Atma (soul) of the Paramatma
- Moon = the Manas (mind) of the Paramatma
- Mars = the aggressive spirit/initiative of Narayana
- Jupiter = the Dhi Shakti (intelligence) of Narayana
- Venus = the spirit of happiness/enjoyment of Narayana
Even Rama prayed to Shiva (at Rameshwaram) after the Lanka war — his horoscope indicated separation from wife, and he needed remedial worship. Krishna worshipped too. Gods pray to other gods.
Bhava (House) vs. Rashi: The House Division Controversy
Two Approaches
1. Equal Sign Houses (Parasara's Method — recommended): Each Rashi = one Bhava. If Lagna is at 28° of Aries, the entire Aries sign is the 1st house. If Venus is at 1° of Gemini, Venus is in the 3rd house.
2. Bhava Chakra / Sripati Paddhati (later method): The Lagna degree is the midpoint of the 1st house. Go 15° back and 15° forward — that's the 1st house. Houses can span two signs. Using unequal divisions (Placidus, Koch, Sripati methods), house sizes can vary (29°, 31°, etc.).
PVR's Position (from his three Gurus)
PVR learned from three gurus:
- His father (P.V.S. Tharpathe Rao) — taught each Rashi = one Bhava
- Dr. B.V. Raman — mentioned multiple approaches; leaned toward Sripati but wasn't definitive
- Pandit Sanjay Rath — from traditional parampara in Orissa; taught each Rashi = one Bhava
Two out of three gurus confirmed: each Rashi is a Bhava. Parasara, in his voluminous work, always talks about counting signs to find houses. He never once mentioned dividing a sign between two houses.
— PVNRAnalogy: If you're standing near the wall of a room and want to know which room you're in, you count the room you're standing in — you don't draw a line from the middle of this room to the middle of the next room.
The Bhava Chakra / Sripati approach came from Greek astrology's influence on Indian astrology in the last 1500-2000 years. It does not have the sanction of the Maharshis.
Chara, Sthira, and Dvisva Bhava Rashi (Movable, Fixed, Dual Signs)
The 12 Rashis divide into three categories:
| Category | Sanskrit | Signs | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movable | Chara | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn (1, 4, 7, 10) | Volatile, changeable |
| Fixed | Sthira | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius (2, 5, 8, 11) | Stable, rigid |
| Dual | Dvisva Bhava | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces (3, 6, 9, 12) | Flexible, mixed nature |
Trimurti Rulership Over Rashi Types
| Rashi Type | Ruled By | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Chara (Movable) | Brahma (Creator) | Creation involves movement, change, new beginnings |
| Sthira (Fixed) | Shiva (Destroyer) | When do you become truly Sthira? When you die. Ultimate Sthira = Moksha |
| Dvisva Bhava (Dual) | Vishnu (Sustainer) | Sustenance requires flexibility — not too rigid, not too volatile |
— PVNRShiva rules Sthira not because "destruction is stability" but because the ultimate stability comes when the ego, tamas, and ignorance within us are destroyed. True stillness (Moksha) is Shiva's domain.
Practical Application: Muhurta
- Sthira Lagna for starting a job or venture you want to last → stability
- Chara Lagna for something you expect to change or evolve → movement
- Dvisva Bhava Lagna for balance between stability and adaptability
Warning: This is just one factor. If Mars (planet of change) sits in a Sthira Lagna, the "fixedness" becomes rigidity/stubbornness, not stability. Always consider the planets influencing the Lagna, not just the sign type.
Rashi Drishti (Sign-Based Aspects)
Unlike Graha Drishti (based on who the planet is), Rashi Drishti is based on where the planet is. It shows the actual influence a planet has due to its placement — like how you naturally interact with neighbors near your house.
Rules of Rashi Drishti
1. Dual signs aspect all other dual signs: Gemini ↔ Virgo ↔ Sagittarius ↔ Pisces (all aspect each other mutually)
2. Movable signs aspect fixed signs (and vice versa): Each movable sign aspects 3 fixed signs, except the one adjacent to it.
3. Fixed signs aspect movable signs (and vice versa): Each fixed sign aspects 3 movable signs, except the one adjacent to it.
The exception rule: A Rashi cannot aspect the Rashi adjacent to it — they are "too close to see."
Rashi Drishti Table
| Rashi | Type | Aspects These Rashis |
|---|---|---|
| Aries (Movable) | Chara | Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius (not Taurus — adjacent) |
| Taurus (Fixed) | Sthira | Cancer, Libra, Capricorn (not Aries — adjacent; not Gemini — adjacent) |
| Gemini (Dual) | Dvisva | Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Cancer (Movable) | Chara | Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus (not Leo — adjacent) |
| Leo (Fixed) | Sthira | Libra, Capricorn, Aries (not Cancer — adjacent; not Virgo — adjacent) |
| Virgo (Dual) | Dvisva | Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Libra (Movable) | Chara | Aquarius, Taurus, Leo (not Scorpio — adjacent) |
| Scorpio (Fixed) | Sthira | Capricorn, Aries, Cancer (not Libra — adjacent; not Sagittarius — adjacent) |
| Sagittarius (Dual) | Dvisva | Gemini, Virgo, Pisces |
| Capricorn (Movable) | Chara | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio (not Aquarius — adjacent) |
| Aquarius (Fixed) | Sthira | Aries, Cancer, Libra (not Capricorn — adjacent; not Pisces — adjacent) |
| Pisces (Dual) | Dvisva | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius |
Graha Drishti vs. Rashi Drishti: The Key Distinction
| Graha Drishti | Rashi Drishti | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Nature/identity of the planet | Position/placement in a sign |
| Shows | What the planet desires to influence | What the planet can actually influence |
| Analogy | Your ambitions and wishes | Your neighborhood and actual reach |
Both must be present for maximum effect. Graha Drishti without Rashi Drishti = desire without ability. Rashi Drishti without Graha Drishti = ability without desire.
