D-12 and D-9 — How to Read Relations in Divisional Charts

A student asks: in some charts we take the lord of a house, in others the house itself, as the starting point for a relative. Which is used where?

So for the husband's death, the 7th of Navamsa is the lagna and the marakas are counted from there.

D-6 (Shashtamsa) — Root Cause of Disease

A student asks to see her D-6, since she was ill. PVNR opens the natal D-6.

Her D-6

D-6 lagna is Cancer. The 6th house shows diseases, and secondarily the 8th.

• Venus is in the 6th house (Sagittarius). Venus is 11th lord — the badhakesha.
• Jupiter is the 6th lord and aspects his own 6th house from Gemini.
• The main influences on the 6th are Venus and Jupiter, and both are bad: one is badhaka lord, the other 6th lord.

Jupiter — Fat, Sweets, Diabetes

• A student suggests digestion. PVNR: the Sun is the planet of digestion. Jupiter is the planet of fat.
• Jupiter is also sweet (see the tastes in Part 17).
• With Jupiter as the planet giving sickness, expect problems relating to fat in the body or to sweet things. Diabetes is one disease Jupiter is associated with.
• PVNR has Jupiter in the 6th of his own D-6 and has diabetes.
• She had diabetes. "I expected Jupiter to be involved. Jupiter was there."

Combine Rasi and D-6

• D-6 is not the only chart for disease. Combine Rasi and D-6.
• In her Rasi chart Jupiter is 3rd and 6th lord. He gives Gajakesari and that is good — but as 3rd and 6th lord he is a malefic for her.
• So Jupiter dasha will not give great health. People say Jupiter dasha is always good and Rahu always bad. Not so. For her Jupiter is bad for health.
• A Jupiter who decides to give diabetes gives it in his own dasha, or in a friend's dasha when he has influence on it.

Venus — Kidneys, Uterus

• Venus represents the kidneys. He can also show the uterus.
• Problems with kidneys or uterus are possible.

"For all you know, there may be some problems with the kidney which are behind her diabetes."

Each disease comes from several factors, not one. Shashtamsa shows the factors going into a particular disease. Much knowledge is still missing, so very specific prediction is difficult. These are the general areas where the person should be careful.

Example: Mars With Rahu

A lady PVNR knows has Mars with Rahu in her Shashtamsa.

• Mars shows the nerve marrow — the fluid that fills the nerves and carries the nervous signals.
• Rahu afflicting Mars: very hard, dry nerves. Headaches and nervous pains. She had both.
• Remedy: herbs that increase kapha — and kapha in the nervous system, not some other system. She took Ayurvedic herbs and in a few weeks the nervous pains were gone.
• In her chart Mars and Rahu were associated with the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. The planets have to be associated with the 6th and 8th houses, and possibly the 12th. Only then is there disease.

So Shashtamsa tells you which tissue is giving the problem and whether it is kapha, pitta or vata — and from that the Ayurvedic remedy.

Rasi Shows the Disease, D-6 the Root

• What kind of physical problem somebody has — kidney trouble, sugar, cancer — is seen from the Rasi chart, from its 6th and 8th houses, the dusthanas. That is not the purpose of Shashtamsa.
• Shashtamsa shows the root: which tissue is weak, and what kind of weakness.
• Asthma, for example, has three or four different root causes — weak nerves in one person, weak muscles in another. The disease is the same. The root differs, and it is seen in Shashtamsa.

Year-to-Year Variation

A student: symptoms change from year to year. Can that be seen?

• Yes, in the Tithi Pravesha chart. A cool-bodied person may run a lot of pitta for a couple of years.
• But the natal chart is the important thing. If the natal chart does not show even a remote possibility of something, seeing it in the TP chart does not make it happen.

Why the Root Matters — Ayurveda

• Acidity: Western medicine gives a base to neutralise the acid, every day. The symptom is gone and the cause stays. PVNR is blunt that this suits a commercial system — a cure that has to be taken every day is a steady revenue.
• Ayurveda asks why so much acid is produced. Pitta produces the acids that digest food. Acid in excess means pitta is too strong. Control the pitta and the acid falls.
• Shashtamsa is the chart of that root cause — of all your physical weaknesses.

Planet-Tissue (Saptadhatu) Correspondences

"You guys should remember all these tissues."

• Each of the seven planets shows the building of its tissue. Strong Jupiter: a lot of fat builds up. Strong Venus: a lot of reproductive juice. Strong Mars: healthy nerve marrow.
• Rahu and Ketu afflicting a planet show depletion of its tissue.

"Rahu and Ketu are shadows. They don't exist. So they show burning of everything, depleting everything."

Example: Sun With Rahu and Ketu

In the D-6 on screen the Sun is with Rahu and Ketu. (Subbalakshmi's D-6 has exactly this, in Libra, the 4th house.)

• Sun is bones. Would such a person be a great bodybuilder with strong bones? Definitely not. The bones are depleted — some weakness or deformation.
• A student asks about arthritis. Only if Sun or the nodes are associated with the 6th and 8th houses. Otherwise the disease may not come, but the bones are weak all the same.

Planetary Tastes

• Jupiter = sweet. Moon = salty. Moon does not make anybody like sweets.
• Sun = hot. Saturn = cold, and also stale and stored things.
• Jupiter in lagna or the 2nd of the Rasi chart: the person loves sweets. This is read in Rasi, not in D-6.
• Jupiter in the 2nd in Rasi and in the 6th in D-6: problems related to sweets.

PVNR's Own D-6

Birth data as he reads it out: April 4, 1970, 5:47:13 PM IST, Machilipatnam, India (81°E08').

• In his D-6, Saturn is in the 8th house, in Cancer, with Rahu and Ketu.
• "They don't spare even their friends. Even though Shani is their friend, they don't spare him."
• Saturn stands for muscles. Any weakness in his body is mainly of the muscles. Because it happens in the 8th house, sickness from it is possible.
• Where? Cancer is the 4th house of the natural zodiac — the heart. So the muscles in the heart area need care, especially when the dashas are bad.
• Saturn is also the planet of vayu, of breathing. Rahu and Ketu with Saturn: breathing problems.
• A few years earlier he had allergic bronchitis — "a lower version of asthma" — with weakness of the muscles in the lungs. He took herbs to strengthen the muscles in the lung area and his breathing is fine now. "When the right dasha comes, it can happen."

A student asks whether Cancer means blood, being Moon's sign. No. An afflicted Moon would show blood. Cancer has nothing to do with blood. Cancer is the heart.

Lungs and Breathing

Students guess Moon, then Mercury, for the lungs.

• The planet of vayu tattva is Saturn.
• The sign for lungs and breathing is Gemini. The house is the 3rd.
• Afflictions to these, especially involving Saturn, can give asthma.
• This is the basic principle. Asthma has several root causes, and D-6 shows which one applies.
