Review of Core Concepts

Choosing the Chart

• To see any matter, first pick the divisional chart that throws light on that area of life. Children: Saptamsa. Parents: Dvadasamsa.
• The principles do not change from chart to chart. What the 1st house shows, what the 2nd house shows — the basics are the same in every divisional chart.

Three Levels

1. Houses from Lagna — Lagna is the essence of your being. It is immeasurable and imperceivable, and so are the qualities shown by the houses from it.
2. Arudha of a house — the measurable, tangible things relating to that matter.
3. Houses from Arudha Lagna — Arudha Lagna is the measurable self: image and status. The houses from it show the qualities of that image.

Karaka, Rasi Drishti, Argala, Graha Drishti

• Karaka = project manager. For the project called "getting this person married and keeping him happy in marriage", Venus is the project manager.
• Rasi drishti = someone who always has a role in the project. A permanent influence.
• Argala = a conclusive intervention. Like the engineer who does the physical layout of a chip: he may know nothing about the video compression the chip is for, but without him the project is not over. The role is fulfilled when that planet's dasha or antardasha comes.
• Graha drishti = someone who desires to work on the project. He may or may not get to. It depends on a three-way relationship: the karaka (project manager), the lord of the house where the planet sits (his boss), and the planet itself. If the desire is fulfilled, it is during a particular dasha.

Dasha Systems — Purpose of Each

Parasara spoke of at least 50 dashas and Jaimini of others. They did not do it to fill pages. Each dasha has its own role.

Narayana is effort; Lakshmi is the fruit of effort. Correlate Narayana Dasha and Sudasha to see when someone puts in effort and when the results of that effort come.

Forms of Lakshmi (Sudasha)

Lakshmi is not only money.

• Example: Gemini Sudasha with Ketu in Gemini. Ketu stands for moksha, so Mokshalakshmi's blessings come. Things relating to spirituality come very easily in that period. Whether they actually come depends on other things.

Vimshottari — the Dasha of Mind

"Parashara said that in Kali Yuga, the yuga where we are living, Vimshottari dasha is very important."

• If you want one dasha that gives reasonable results, it is Vimshottari. The other dashas have a particular focus; Vimshottari has none and covers the most ground.
• It shows how the mind looks at things, not the outer fact. A leader may become Prime Minister and yet feel pushed into a corner and not enjoy it. That feeling may not match the power; other dashas show the power better. Yet the minds of the people around him see him as powerful, and to that extent Vimshottari still reflects it.
• In any divisional chart, Vimshottari dasha and antardasha are enough to get the major periods and events of a life. No need to go below antardasha.

Do Dashas Span Several Lives?

A student asked whether any dasha runs across rebirths.

• No. The dasha is reset when you are born. It is a completely new dasha.
• Even the time in the mother's womb has its own dasha.
• A soul that leaves this world may spend hundreds of years in Suvarloka, or an advanced soul a thousand years in Tapoloka, before coming back. That existence may have a dasha of its own. Whether the dashas of different existences are linked — "we don't really know."

Conception Chart (Adhana Chakra)

• The chart of the moment of conception is the Adhana Chakra.
• In the womb the dasha is again Vimshottari, but started from the Sun's nakshatra instead of the Moon's, and compressed to 9 months for human beings. For animals the span differs.
• With the exact conception time, this dasha shows the major events of those nine months, such as an accident.
• The exact conception time is very hard to know. Some astrologers ran controlled experiments in their own cases, noting the possible times. R. Santanam, a translator of Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, did much research on this. The final birth chart correlated with one of the noted conception times.
• By the śāstra the conception time fixes the birth chart. The formulas go up to the Dvadasamsa lagna of the birth chart: not the exact minute, but a window of about 10 minutes.
• The rules work perfectly in some cases. They are not fully understood.
• The time of death in one life may be linked to the conception time of the next. Births may not be disconnected; there may be continuity from birth to birth. Only some of the links are known.

Punya Chakra — Chart at Time of Death

• The chart cast for the moment someone passes away is the Punya Chakra.
• From it, there are principles for:
  • how long the soul stays attached to the mind, and when it leaves
  • which loka the soul goes to
  • how many tens or hundreds of years it stays there
  • where it is reborn
• Pandit Sanjay Rath spoke on this at the California workshop the year before, teaching what his elders passed down. Some links may be missing. How well the principles work is not yet known.

Vimshottari After Death

• At death, mind and soul separate from the body. The body decays; the mind exists for a while — tens or even hundreds of years, depending on the time of death and on other charts. Then the mind too separates from the soul and decays, and the soul is taken to the higher or lower lokas.
• Vimshottari is the dasha of mind. While the mind exists it may still perceive what happens to the relatives, so Vimshottari may work after death. In some cases it does not.
• The teacher said he is not comfortable enough in this knowledge to discuss the rules.

Ajna Chakra — Intelligence and Intuition

• Astrology is one way to know a person's past, present and future. Palmistry is another. Divya drishti is another.
• Some astrologers are astrologers in name only. Their predictions come true because of Vaak Shuddhi — they keep the purity of their speech, and their speech becomes powerful — whether or not the prediction rests on the reasons given by Parasara and Jaimini.
• It does not matter which deity: Hanuman upasakas, Ganesha upasakas, Devi upasakas. A spiritually advanced soul can have that divya drishti.
• Drishti here does not mean a TV in the mind. It is an inspiration, a feeling that something is going to happen. That is Jyotir Drishti.
• Apart from the two eyes there is the Ajna Chakra, the third eye. Jupiter rules it. It is the eye with which the intelligence perceives the world. Intuition comes from it.
