Abhijit Muhurtha, Transit Analysis in Muhurtha Charts & Amavasya Rules
Abhijit Muhurtha: the midpoint of the day (Sun's transit through the 10th house from lagna) — a universally auspicious Muhurtha that can override most planetary afflictions. How to calculate: ~48 minutes centered on the Sun's MC transit. Transit analysis in muhurtha charts: the muhurtha chart is a "birth chart" of the activity — run transits and dashas from it to see how the activity unfolds. Amavasya (no-Moon day) rules in muhurtha: most activities are forbidden on Amavasya; only specific spiritual activities are allowed.
"Abhijit Muhurtha is a powerful override. If you cannot find a perfect muhurtha with all five panchanga elements good, choose Abhijit — it nullifies most doshas."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Abhijit Muhurtha
- Definition: When Sun is exactly on the cusp of the 10th house (midheaven), within the same degree as the Lagna
- More broadly: Sun in the 10th house = a reasonably good Abhijit Muhurtha
- The exact blessing: "the blessing of Mahavishnu that comes when you start something at the Sun's peak power"
- PVNR's warning: Do not rely solely on Abhijit Muhurtha and ignore all other factors. A Abhijit with terrible Varesha (like Mars afflicted by Mandi in Markasthana) can still result in delays and weakness. The Abhijit helps but does not override everything.
- Best to combine Abhijit with good panchanga elements, not substitute for them.
Transit Analysis in Muhurtha Charts
Key Principle
The muhurtha chart is the "birth chart" of the venture. After the event begins, transits through that muhurtha chart trigger various results — just as transits trigger results in natal charts.
Trines = Blessings; Quadrants = Efforts
- When benefic planets transit the trine lords of a relevant divisional chart (e.g., Saptamsa for children) → blessings manifest (birth of children, successful outcomes)
- Quadrants from muhurtha lagna = effort houses; trines = blessing houses
Example: PVNR's Book Muhurtha (May 13, 1997)
Data: Tuesday, Andover MA, ~noon, Abhijit Muhurtha (Sun ≈ 29° = lagna ≈ 28°)
Evaluation:
- Vara: Mars (Tuesday) = Yogakaraka (5L+10L) but in 2nd house (Maraka) + afflicted by Mandi and Gulika → Agni (fire) is VERY WEAK → explains 3 years of delay before the book got written
- Nakshatra: Ashlesha
- From Moon: Vipat Tara → mental wavering, felt weak, questioned the effort
- From Lagna: Sadhana Tara → intellectually committed; strength of lagna gathered toward achievement
- Nakshatra lord Mercury in 10th house = well-placed for writing/karma = Vayu (air) is strong
- Tithi: Saptami (Saturn's tithi) in 9th house with parivartana → Raj Yoga with trine lords → Jala Tattva (creativity, prosperity) is very strong
- Karana: Vanija Karana (ruled by Venus) → Venus = 11th house in own sign Taurus in muhurtha chart = excellent → Bhumi (accomplishment) is very strong
- Yoga: Vriddhi Yoga (ruled by Mercury) → growth and expansion → Mercury = lagna lord, vargottama in natal chart, in 10th house in muhurtha → Akasha (harmony) is strong
Conclusion: Fire was missing (Vara weak), but creative element (Jala), harmony (Akasha), achievement (Bhumi), and strength (Vayu) were all strong → book WOULD get written eventually, but with long delay.
Transit Trigger:
- Most book was written when Jupiter transited Aries (containing Mercury + Sun in muhurtha chart) → activated the writing/karma combination
- Met Sanjay Rath (key guru) when Jupiter transited Pisces (activated 9th house with Ketu — Guru-Ketu yoga showing parampara guidance)
- Book finalized and released when Jupiter transited Taurus (11th house in muhurtha chart = completion of desire)
Additional nuance: Sun-Mars parivartana in muhurtha chart = when triggered by Jupiter's transit, fire suddenly burned bright → rapid writing in 1.5 months after years of stagnation.
Note: For PVNR, Jupiter in D-24 (his chart of learning) is in the 10th house = Jupiter's transit was especially powerful for triggering book-writing activity.
