Atmakaraka = I-ness / Ego Sense (Bandhanamokshakaraka: Binds AND Liberates); Houses from AK = Current Spiritual Path (10th=Action, 6th=Service, 5th=Scripture, 8th=Meditation, 12th=Moksha-Ready); 12th from AK = Ishta Devata; JH 7.4: Use True Nodes (NOT Mean Nodes)

AK philosophy: "Atmakaraka is your very sense of I — your I-ness, your ego sense. In Vedantic terms: the self-awareness that defines 'this is I.'" AK vs Lagna: Lagna = body (one part of self-awareness); AK = total ego sense including body but beyond body. Whatever the I-ness focuses on = what the person pursues. "Parashara says Bandhanamokshakaraka — AK is the one who BOTH binds AND liberates. I-ness binds you to the world; the same I-ness when it dissolves becomes liberation." Why 12th from AK = Ishta Devata/moksha: "12th house = giving, letting go. 12th from AK = what happens when I-ness starts to dissolve. That is why 12th from AK shows moksha and the deity who helps dissolve the ego." If 12th house from AK is strong = I-ness ready to be dropped; if not strong = egoistic. Houses from AK and corresponding spiritual paths: 10th strong = karma/service (organizational work); 6th strong = go to ashram and serve physically; 7th strong = deal with people for religious organization; 9th strong = build temple, active religion; 5th strong = study scriptures/Puranas; 8th strong = meditation and inner transformation; 12th strong = ready for moksha, worship Ishta Devata. "A real guru knows your nature without the horoscope. We approximate this using AK." True nodes (JH 7.4): mean nodes are abstract constructs that do not physically exist; all eclipse calculations use true nodes; no classical text says Rahu must be retrograde every moment (brief forward phases = like Jupiter briefly retrograde overall); true nodes give better divisional longitude research results. Config: Preferences → Planet Calculation Options → last combo box → "True Nodes." Rahu always measured from end of sign (backward reckoning) regardless of brief forward phases.

"Parashara calls the Atmakaraka "Bandhanamokshakaraka" — the one who both binds and liberates. Your I-ness binds you to the world. You say: I am a great astrologer. I need wealth. I need to spread this teaching. All of that is I-ness — and it binds. But when the I-ness is ready to dissolve, that same AK becomes the key to liberation. That is why the 12th house from AK shows the Ishta Devata: the deity who helps dissolve the ego."

Atmakaraka Philosophy — The I-ness (Vedantic Teaching)

"Atmakaraka is not just about moksha. Parashara says: AK is the king of the horoscope. He is your very sense of 'I', your 'I-ness', your ego sense. In Vedantic terms: your self-awareness that defines 'this is I.'"

— PVNR

AK vs Lagna: Lagna = body (one part of self-awareness). AK = the total ego sense that includes body but is more than body.

What AK does: Whatever the I-ness focuses on, that's what the person pursues:

  • "I am a great astrologer" → teaches astrology
  • "I need knowledge" → pursues knowledge
  • "I need to spread pranayama" → starts school

Why AK shows moksha:

"Moksha = letting the I-ness go. Your limited I-ness disappears. What does 12th house show? Giving, letting go. 12th from AK = what happens when the I-ness starts to dissolve. That is why 12th from AK shows moksha and the Ishta Devata (who helps dissolve the ego)."

— PVNR

But not everyone is destined for moksha this life:

"If 12th house is strong = I-ness is ready to be dropped. If 12th house is not strong = person is egoistic; I-ness is not ready. Look at which house from AK is STRONG — that shows the current spiritual path."

— PVNR
House from AKSpiritual Path
10th strongAction/karma — service, organizational work for guru, doing karma in world
6th strongService — go to ashram and serve; do dishes, mow lawn, clean idols
7th strongDealing/PR — deal with people on behalf of religious organization
9th strongBuild a temple, pursue religion actively
5th strongScholarly study of scriptures, learn Puranas, deepen knowledge
8th strongMeditation, inner work, transformation
12th strongReady for moksha; worship Ishta Devata from 12th from AK

"If Ramakrishna was there, to the angry disciple he would say 'fight for your guru' — to the mild one he would say 'you should have been bold.' A real guru knows your nature without the horoscope. We as astrologers try to approximate this using AK analysis."

— PVNR

Parashara's actual statement: "Bandhanamokshakaraka" — AK is the one who both binds AND liberates. The I-ness binds you to the world; and the same I-ness, when it dissolves, becomes liberation.

Jagannatha Hora 7.4 — True vs Mean Nodes

Issue: Rahu/Ketu positions can differ by ~2° between mean and true nodes → major sign changes in higher divisional charts (D24, etc.)

PVNR's conclusion: Use True Nodes (not Mean Nodes)

Arguments:

  1. Mean nodes are an abstraction — they do not physically exist
  2. All eclipse calculations use true nodes
  3. No classical text says Rahu must be retrograde at every moment
  4. True nodes move slightly forward temporarily, then retrograde overall — same as Jupiter moves forward overall but briefly retrograde
  5. In divisional longitude research, true nodes gave more consistent/better results
  6. PVNR has privately used true nodes for ~2 years; switched publicly ~1 year before this lesson

Configuration in JH 7.4: Preferences → Related to Calculations → Planet Calculation Options → last combo box → select "True Nodes"

Rahu's longitude direction: Rahu is always measured from the end of the sign (backward reckoning) because his overall motion is backward, regardless of brief forward phases — same principle as Jupiter measured forward even when temporarily retrograde.
