BPHS Ch.10 — Arishtabhanga Complete: 6 Universal Antidotes for All Balarishta Combinations

After 45 Balarishta combinations in Ch.9, Parashara gives compact universal antidotes in Ch.10 (6 verses): (1) Any ONE of Mercury/Jupiter/Venus in a KENDRA from lagna = "destroys ALL evil combinations like sun destroying darkness" — even just one natural benefic in any quadrant neutralizes all balarishta; (2) Strong Jupiter ALONE in lagna = destroys all evil ("like all sins destroyed by prostrating before Shiva") — Jupiter must be "bali" (powerful), not debilitated; (3) Lagna lord (functional benefic par excellence) WELL-PLACED in a kendra (sam-kendrasamstha = quality placement, not just occupancy) = cancels all evil; (4) Shukla Paksha birth + night + benefic aspecting lagna = OR Krishna Paksha birth + day + benefic aspecting lagna = evil cancelled, benefits mother; (5) Malefic in 4th or 10th house WITH Shubhakartari (benefics hemming it from both sides) = good for father — logic: 4th house = 8th from 9th (father's longevity); 10th house = 2nd from 9th (father's Maraka); benefics protecting both ends = father safe; (6) Malefics hemmed by benefics + those benefics are in kendras/trikonas = "very quickly destroys all arishta." If no malefic at all + benefics in kendra/trikona = results even stronger. Note: verses 1-3 together cover both natural benefics (v.1 = all three in kendra, v.2 = Jupiter specifically in lagna) and functional benefic (v.3 = lagna lord in kendra). "A few key planet placements cancel dozens of specific evil combinations — Parashara's elegant design."

"Even just one of Mercury, Jupiter, or Venus in a quadrant — all the evil is cancelled. Like the sun destroying darkness. Parashara compares Jupiter in lagna to Shiva's blessings — just as all sins are destroyed by prostrating before Shiva."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS Chapter 10 — Arishtabhanga Adhyaya (Antidotes for All Evils)

Context: After completing 45 Balarishta combinations (Ch.9), Parashara now gives Chapter 10 — the antidotes. This is a short chapter (7–9 verses). "For the first time we finished one Adhyaya very quickly."

Verse 1 — Mercury, Jupiter, or Venus in Quadrant from Lagna

Antidote combination:

  • Any one of Mercury, Jupiter, or Venus placed in a quadrant from lagna (kendras: 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th)

Effect: Destroys all the evil combinations (all arishtam). Like the sun destroying darkness.

"Eka api ghaniyar shukranam lagnaat kendragato yadi, arishtam nikhilam hanti, timiram bhaskaro yatha."

"Even just ONE of these three natural benefics, if it is in a quadrant — all the evil combinations are cancelled."

PVNR note: He did not say functional benefic — he said these three specific planets (natural benefics: Mercury, Jupiter, Venus). These are the three natural benefics among the planets (excluding the waxing Moon). If even one of them is strong in a kendra, all balarishta is neutralized.

Verse 2 — Strong Jupiter Alone in Lagna

Antidote combination:

  • Single, strong Jupiter placed in the lagna (ascendant)

Effect: Destroys a large collection of evil combinations.

"Ekayeva bali jivo lagnastho rishtasanchayam hanti papakshayam bhaktya pranāmayeva Shūlinah." "Just as all sins of a person are destroyed by prostrating before Shiva — so Jupiter in lagna destroys all evil combinations."

PVNR's comment: "Parashara is comparing Jupiter in lagna to Shiva's blessings. Jupiter in lagna is a great blessing. He is the highest natural benefic."

Important: Jupiter must be strong ("bali" = powerful). Debilitated or afflicted Jupiter in lagna may not fully cancel the evils.

Contrast with previous verse: Verse 1 = any one of 3 benefics in any kendra. Verse 2 = Jupiter specifically, in lagna, and strong. The previous covered the highest natural benefic having association with the kendras; this covers specifically Jupiter in lagna.

Verse 3 — Lagna Lord Well-Placed in a Quadrant

Antidote combination:

  • Lagna lord (Vilagnesa) in a quadrant (kendrasamstha)
  • Must be well-placed — the Sanskrit prefix "sam" (samkendrasamstha) implies quality, not just occupancy
  • "Well-placed" = not debilitated, not in inimical sign, not severely afflicted

Effect: Destroys all evil combinations.

Logic: Verse 1 covered the highest natural benefic + kendras. Verse 3 covers the highest functional benefic (lagna lord) + kendras. The lagna lord is always the greatest functional benefic.

"Previous verse covered highest natural benefic. This covers highest functional benefic — lagna lord. When lagna lord is well placed in a quadrant, the evil combinations are destroyed."

Verse 4 — Paksha + Birth Time + Benefic Aspect on Lagna

Antidote combination (either of the two):

  • Birth in Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight) + night birth + benefic aspecting lagna, OR
  • Birth in Krishna Paksha (waning fortnight) + day birth + benefic aspecting lagna

Effect: Destroys evil, benefits mother.

The rule: In Shukla Paksha, night is auspicious; in Krishna Paksha, day is auspicious. When the corresponding auspicious birth time combines with benefic aspect on lagna, evil is neutralized.

Also: "Jupiter and Mars either together or Mars being affected by Jupiter is good for mother" — this combination in the context of this verse gives good results for mother.

Verse 5 — Malefic in 4th or 10th with Shubhakartari from Benefics → Good for Father

Combination:

  • A malefic is in the 4th or 10th house
  • But that malefic has Shubhakartari (benefics hemming it from both sides: e.g., benefics in 3rd+5th when malefic is in 4th, or benefics in 9th+11th when malefic is in 10th)

Effect: Auspicious results for father ("pitu sukha karo yoga").

PVNR's logic using 9th house as reference for father:

  • Malefic in 10th from lagna = 2nd from 9th = Maraka Sthana for father
  • But if 9th and 11th have benefics, they form Shubhakartari on that malefic → neutralized
  • Malefic in 4th from lagna = 8th from 9th = longevity house for father
  • But if 3rd and 5th have benefics, Shubhakartari neutralizes the longevity threat

Extension: PVNR suggests same logic works for mother (taking 4th house as reference), but Parashara only states it for father.

Verse 6 — Malefics Hemmed by Benefics + Benefics in Kendras/Trikonas

Combination:

  • Malefic planets have benefic planets on both sides (Shubhakartari)
  • AND the benefic planets are in kendras (quadrants) and trikonas (trines)

Effect: "Very quickly destroys all the arishta."

Additional point: If there is no malefic to start with, and benefics are in kendras/trikonas, it is even better. The verse as stated is for offsetting the malefic, but if there is no malefic, the positive results are accentuated.

"If nobody hits me and I still take the tonic — I will be even stronger."

Chapter 10 Complete

"We are done with this particular Adhyaya — Arishtabhanga. For the first time we finished one Adhyaya quickly."

Parashara's elegance: Ch.9 gave 45 evil combinations; Ch.10 gave compact universal antidotes. A few key planet placements cancel all the evil from dozens of specific combinations.
