BPHS Chapter 10 — Arishtabhanga Adhyaya (Antidotes for All Evils)

Context: The previous chapter listed the evil (arishta) combinations. This chapter gives what breaks them. Parashara opens: the arishta has been told by me, now its breaking (tad-bhanga) is told, seeing which the learned should pronounce on evil and its absence in those born.

The chapter is short and was finished in one sitting.

"This is not really remedy. This is basically antidote."

Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in a Quadrant from Lagna

Eko'pi jnarya-shukranam lagnat kendragato yadi, arishtam nikhilam hanti, timiram bhaskaro yatha.

• Even one of Mercury (Jna), Jupiter (Arya) and Venus (Shukra) in a kendra from lagna kills all the evil.
• The simile: as the Sun kills darkness. If the evil combinations in the horoscope are darkness, these planets in a kendra are the Sun.

Strong Jupiter Alone in Lagna

Eka eva bali jivo lagnastho rishta-sanchayam hanti, papa-kshayam bhaktya pranama iva shulinah.

• You do not need all of Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. Jupiter alone, strong (bali), placed in lagna destroys a whole collection (sanchaya) of evil combinations.
• The simile: just as the sins of a person are destroyed by a devoted pranam to Shiva. The teacher corrects himself here — sins, not evils.

"So he is saying basically Jupiter in lagna is a great blessing, and he is comparing that to Shiva."

These two verses are generic. Parashara does not say "for this lagna" or "for that lagna", and for Mercury, Jupiter and Venus he does not say whether they are functional benefics or not.

"So irrespective of whatever their agenda is, those natural benefics, when they are in a kendra, any evils that show short life or any such bad things — basically they will offset them."

Lagna Lord Well Placed in a Quadrant

Eka eva vilagneshah kendra-samstho balanvitah …

The teacher calls this "the fourth one" (the opening verse is the first).

• Vilagnesha: vilagna can be read as a special ascendant, but take it simply as the ascendant; vilagnesha = lagna lord.
• Kendra-samstha, not just kendra-stha. Stha = stationed. Sam = samyak, well. So the lagna lord is well stationed in a quadrant.
• It can be any quadrant, but he has to be well placed — not in debilitation, not in an inimical sign.
• The verse also says balanvitah (endowed with strength) and closes with a Shiva simile (pinaki tripuram); the teacher's comment on these words is lost in the recording.

Why the lagna lord: he is the most important planet and the highest functional benefic.

"So the previous verse covered the highest natural benefic having association with lagna. This verse covers the highest functional benefic being well placed."

Shukla Paksha Night Birth with a Benefic Aspecting Lagna

Shukla-pakshe kshapa-janma lagne saumya-nirikshite, viparitam krishna-pakshe tatha rishta-vinashanam.

The teacher calls this a tricky one.

• Shukla-pakshe — birth in the waxing fortnight.
• Kshapa-janma — birth at night.
• Lagne saumya-nirikshite — lagna aspected by a saumya. Saumya has two meanings, Mercury and benefic. Read it as benefic here.
• So: birth in Shukla paksha, at night, with a benefic aspecting lagna.
• Viparitam krishna-pakshe — the reverse in the waning fortnight.
• Result: rishta-vinashanam — the evil is destroyed.

The teacher's unpacking of "the reverse" is garbled on the recording. A day birth in Krishna paksha is the plain reading. One surviving fragment suggests he also reversed the aspect (a malefic aspecting lagna); this cannot be confirmed from the recording.

A Verse for Tula Lagna and the 12th House

Not on the surviving recording; unverified.

Between the paksha verse and the verse for the mother the teacher reads one more verse. Only fragments survive: "12th", "Tula lagna", and that there will then be no trouble. The planet and the exact result cannot be recovered from the recording.

Jupiter and Mars — Good for the Mother

• Jupiter and Mars together, or Mars aspected by Jupiter, is good for the mother.

"Jupiter and Mars either together, or Mars being aspected by Jupiter, is good for mother."

The verse itself and the rest of the explanation are lost in the recording.

Malefic in the 4th or 10th Between Benefics — Good for the Father

Chaturtha-dashame papah saumya-madhye yada bhavet, pituh saukhya-karo yogah shubhaih kendra-trikonagaih.

• Papah = a malefic. Chaturtha-dashame = in the 4th or the 10th, the two key quadrants.
• Saumya-madhye = in the middle of benefics, i.e. shubha kartari from two or more benefics.
• 4th has a malefic while the 3rd and 5th have benefics; or the 10th has a malefic while the 9th and 11th have benefics.
• Result: pituh saukhya-karo yogah — a combination that gives well-being to the father.

The teacher's logic, counting from the 9th house as the father's lagna:

• Malefic in the 10th = 2nd from the 9th, the father's house of death. The benefics in the 9th and 11th are in the 1st and 3rd from the 9th (the 3rd is vitality). They take care of that malefic, so the evil it gives the father is offset.
• Malefic in the 4th = 8th from the 9th, the father's house of longevity. Mars or Ketu there can show a short life or trouble in longevity for the father. The benefics in the 3rd and 5th are in the 7th and 9th from the 9th. The planet in the father's 9th gives fortune; the 7th is a house of death, and a benefic there is not conducive to death.

"Bottom line is, the 8th house planet is being checked by two benefics who are having kartari. So it is auspicious."

Extending it to the mother: Parashara states it only for the father. Take the 4th house for the mother: the 2nd from the 4th is the 5th (and the 8th from the 4th is the 11th). So a malefic in the 5th or 11th with shubha kartari from two benefics may be good for the mother.

"Whatever verse he gives, if you can't understand the logic, you can't extend it. But if you understand the logic, you can extend it to mother, brother, etc."

Malefics Between Benefics, Benefics in Kendras and Trikonas

Saumyantara-gataih papaih shubhaih kendra-trikonagaih, sadyo nashayate arishtam …

• Saumya-antara-gataih papaih — the malefics have gone into the middle of benefics. Again kartari: benefic scissors on the two sides of the malefics.
• Shubhaih kendra-trikonagaih — and the benefics are in quadrants and trines.
• Sadyo nashayate arishtam — the evil is destroyed very quickly.
• The teacher's reading of the last quarter of the verse (tad-bhavottha-phalam …) is lost in the recording.

If there is no malefic to begin with: even better. The verse does not literally apply, but it can be extended. The 10th house holding a malefic with shubha kartari is good; the 10th empty with benefics around it is better still.

"If nobody hits me and still I eat the tonic, I'll be even stronger. It's kind of like that."
