BPHS Chapter 24 — 12th Lord in the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Houses (4–6)

12th Lord in 4th House

BPHS results:

• No happiness from mother (mātṛ-sukha-vivarjita)
• Loss of lands, vehicles and house, day by day (bhūmi-yāna-gṛhādīnāṁ hāni)

Parsing:

• As with siblings: from the 4th he is the 9th lord in lagna, good for the mother's own fortune. From the native's lagna the 12th lord afflicts the 4th: not much happiness from the mother, not a great relationship.
• The 4th is also land, the house you live in, vehicles. Loss or trouble in those.
• "This is the most straightforward verse."

12th Lord in 5th House

BPHS results:

• Without children and learning (suta-vidyā-vivarjita)
• Expenses on account of children (putrārthe vyaya)
• Engrossed in pilgrimages (tīrthāṭana-para)

Why no children or learning: the lord of loss in the house of children and scholarship.

Why he spends on children: the 12th lord is expenses; in the 5th they are for children — education, marriage, anything to do with them. By the same logic the previous verse could have said expenses on the mother.

Why pilgrimages — "the tricky one":

• The 12th is long travel. The 5th is devotion and pūrva puṇya.
• The planet of long journeys sits in the house of pūrva puṇya. Long journeys that come as the fruit of pūrva puṇya are journeys to holy places.
• A student adds the view from the 9th (religion): he is the 4th lord, direction, placed in the 9th from the 9th — well placed for dharma.

Santhanam's translation is wrong here. He joins the two results into "visits shrines in order to beget a son". The two phrases are in different grammatical cases and cannot be combined: one says "for him there are expenses on account of children", the other says "the man is engrossed in pilgrimages".

12th Lord in 6th House

BPHS results:

• Makes enmity with his own people (svajana-vaira-kṛt)
• Angry (krodhī)
• Sinner (pāpī)
• Unhappy (duḥkhī)
• Interested in other men's wives (para-jāyā-rata)

Why enmity with his own people: from the 6th house of enmity he is the 7th lord, sitting in the 6th itself. So he can make enemies even of friends. Which "own people" — family, community, friends — the verse does not say.

Why angry: the 6th is weaknesses, fights, quarrels. As with the 12th lord in the 3rd, the humility is gone and he works for 6th-house matters. A planet meant to make the person humble makes him fight instead.

Why a sinner: the 6th is the house of sin. The 12th lord should enable mokṣa and giving oneself up; placed where he has to fight, nobody is left to make the person humble.

Counterpoint (raised by a student, accepted by the teacher): the person may be putting dharma into action. The 6th is not only sin; it is fighting.

"In general, fighting is sinful, but not always. Sometimes fighting is noble."

Why unhappy:

• Many quarrels and enemies do not make a happy man.
• From the 4th he is the 9th lord in the 3rd: not bad. The 4th is not much affected.
• Lagna is affected: the planet is in a dusthāna from lagna.
• From the 5th (emotional stability) he is the 8th lord aspecting the 8th. That breaks emotional balance.

Why interested in other men's wives: the 12th is also bed pleasures. Its lord aspects his own house from the 6th, the house of fights and sins. He may commit a sin and fight for those pleasures.

The viparīta rāja yoga caution:

• A dusthāna lord in a dusthāna is a viparīta rāja yoga. That is not necessarily a great thing — it can come at somebody else's cost.
• Equally, every bad result above may be invalid in a particular chart.

"So don't jump to conclusions if you see the 12th lord in the 6th house in any chart. With respect to the 9th house, this is a great placement. Even with respect to the 10th house, this is a good placement. So depending on the relationship with the 9th and 10th lords, this may actually be a blessing."
