BPHS Ch.25 — 12th Lord in Houses 4–6: Losses in Mother/Property/Vehicles (4H), No Children/Learning + Pilgrimages (5H), Angry + Sinner + Emotionally Unstable BUT Viparita Rajayoga — Context Determines Expression (6H)

12L in 4H: "most straightforward verse" — no mother happiness (12L = losses in 4H of mother); daily loss of lands/vehicles/house (12L = loss directly in 4H property/vehicle/home significations). 12L in 5H: no children/no learning (12L = losses in 5H = "losses in children and scholarship"); spends on children (12L = expenses; 5H = children = "education costs, marriage, healthcare of children"); interested in pilgrimages (12H = long travel; 5H = Purva Punya + devotion = "planet of long travel in house of devotion = long journeys to holy places; Purva Punya as context for travel"). PVNR critique of Santhanam: "Santhanam combined 'expenses for children' and 'pilgrimages' into 'visits shrines to get a son' — wrong; they are two separate results in different verse parts." 12L in 6H: enmity with own people (from 6H, 12L = 7L in 9th from 6H = "excellent for 6H; gives many enemies including own family; sees world as enemy"); very angry (12L = humility; 6H = fights; "humility gone, fights instead = anger"); sinner (6H = house of sin; 12L diverted to sinful fighting); sad/unhappy (from 5H, 12L = 8L in 8th from 5H = "total break of emotional stability"); interested in other people's wives (12H aspects its own house from 6H = "planet of bed pleasures aspecting from house of sins = willing to commit sin for sensual pleasure"). CRITICAL COUNTERPOINT: "Viparita Rajayoga applies — Dusthana lord in another Dusthana. This person may actually be fighting for dharma, not a sinner. Check 9L and 10L relationships before concluding. From 9H and 10H, this placement is actually good. Do NOT jump to conclusion if you see 12L in 6H — depending on context, this can actually be a blessing."

"Do not jump to the conclusion that someone with the 12th lord in 6th is a sinner. Viparita Rajayoga applies here — the Dusthana lord is in another Dusthana. This person could be fighting for dharma, not against it. From the 9th and 10th houses, this placement is actually good. Context determines the expression. Always check the relationships with the 9th and 10th lords."

BPHS Chapter 24 — 12th Lord in Houses 1–6

Core principle: 12th lord's agenda = expenses, losses, giving up, humility, liberation. Wherever he goes, he will try to make the person spend or let go in the significations of that house.

12th Lord in 1st House (Lagna)

BPHS results:

  • Spendthrift (vyayakara)
  • Physically weak (durbalaha)
  • Kapha diseases (kapharogi)
  • No wealth, no knowledge (dhana-vidya-vivarjitaha)

Parsing:

Why spendthrift: 12th lord's agenda = spending money; he is in the house controlling the person's nature → spending becomes the person's natural trait.

Why physically weak: Lagna = health and vitality; 12th = loss, compromise. Planet whose job is to cause loss is in the house of vitality → diminishes physical strength.

Why kapha diseases:

  • Natural 12th sign = Pisces (Jupiter-ruled) → 12th has a watery/kapha quality
  • Feet (12th house body part) are a seat of excess water storage in Kapha constitution
  • Pisces/Jupiter → 12th lord carries kapha signification
  • Caveat: Don't apply mechanically. If 12th lord is Saturn (a Vata planet), the person won't necessarily be Kapha. Always check the actual planet.

Why no wealth/knowledge:

  • From 2nd house (wealth): 11th lord in 12th → giver of profits placed in house of loss → no accumulation
  • From 5th house (scholarship): 8th lord in 9th from 5th → 8th lord (Arishta) in 9th of 5th = fortune of scholarship destroyed → no learning

12th Lord in 2nd House

BPHS results:

  • Expenses in good/dharmic activities (shubhakarya vyaya)
  • Dharmic (dharmikaha)
  • Soft-spoken / pleasant speech (priyavadi)
  • Virtuous and happy (guna-saukhya-samanvitaha)

Parsing:

Why good expenditure:

  • From 2nd house: 11th lord in lagna → the planet auspicious from 2nd house = accumulates money even while spending
  • "He spends but it results in more resources" → wise investments, not wasteful spending
  • "Shubhakarya" here = smart expenditure / profitable investment rather than only religious donation

Why dharmic:

  • From 9th house (dharma): 4th lord (direction of dharma) in 6th house → argala on dharma; initiative in fighting for dharma
  • 2nd house = 6th from 9th = house of Dharmayuddha (fighting for dharma)
  • "Planets in 2nd house show how you fight for dharma"
  • This planet = 4th from 9th (direction/support) in 6th from 9th (fighting) → dharma activist

Why soft-spoken:

  • 12th house = humility, giving up oneself
  • Planet whose agenda is humility is in the house of speech (2nd)
  • "He will be very humble in his speech; sweet, not commanding or harsh"

Why happy (saukhya):

  • From 4th house (happiness): 9th lord in 11th from 4th = excellent (9th lord in 11th = brilliant placement)
  • "He will have lot of conveyances; will be very happy"

12th Lord in 3rd House

BPHS results:

  • No happiness from siblings (bhratu sukha vivarjitaha)
  • Hates others / creates enemies (bhavedanjay dhanadveshi)
  • Selfish / self-centered (promotes own body/well-being)

Parsing:

Why no happiness from siblings:

  • From lagna (the native): Dusthana lord in 3rd = problems in the native's relationship with siblings
  • Note: From 3rd house as lagna, this is 10th lord in lagna = brothers career-oriented and may do well. But from native's lagna, there is loss/problem in the relationship.
  • "They may be doing well, but the native has problems with them"

Why hates others:

  • From 6th house (enmity): 7th lord in 9th from 6th = excellent placement for 6th house → this planet gives many enemies
  • "When 6th house is well activated, person sees everyone as enemy and creates many enemies"

Why selfish:

  • 12th lord's agenda = humility, giving up self. But he is placed in 3rd house (initiative, fire, drive)
  • An upachaya from lagna (not from 12th) → makes lagna grow, not 12th house
  • "His agenda may suffer. Instead of giving up self, he takes care of self with a lot of initiative."
  • Partial Vipariita Rajyoga possible: dushtana lord in upachaya = some sudden growth in initiative

12th Lord in 4th House

BPHS results:

  • No happiness from mother (matru sukha vivarjitaha)
  • Daily loss of lands, vehicles, house (bhumi-yana-griha hani)

Parsing:

  • 12th lord (losses) in 4th house (mother, property, vehicles, home) → straightforward losses in 4th house significations
  • From mother: from 4th house, 9th lord in lagna from 4th = mother may have good fortune, but the native's relationship with mother is problematic
  • "Most straightforward verse" — no tricky derivation needed

12th Lord in 5th House

BPHS results:

  • No children / no learning (suta-vidya-vivarjitaha)
  • Spends on children (putrarthete vyaya)
  • Interested in pilgrimages / tirthas (tirthatanapara)

Parsing:

Why no children/learning: 12th lord (losses) in 5th house (children, scholarship) → losses in those areas.

Why spends on children: 12th lord (expenses) in 5th (children) → expenses on account of children (education, marriage, healthcare, etc.)

Why pilgrimages:

  • 12th house = long travel; 5th = purva punya, devotion
  • Planet whose agenda is long travel is in the house of purva punya and devotion
  • "Long journeys given as result of purva punya = going to holy places"
  • PVNR critiques Santhanam's translation: Santhanam combined "expenses for children" and "pilgrimages" into "visits shrines to get a son" — this is wrong; they are separate results in different parts of the verse

12th Lord in 6th House

BPHS results:

  • Makes enmity with own people (svajana vaira)
  • Very angry (krodhi)
  • Sinner (papi)
  • Sad / unhappy (dukhi)
  • Interested in other people's women (para-jaya-rata)

Parsing:

Why enmity with own people:

  • From 6th house: 7th lord in 9th from 6th → excellent for 6th house = gives many enemies
  • "7th lord in 9th" = interacting with others in a dharmic/fortunate way from 6th's perspective → enemies include even friends and family
  • "He sees the world as his enemy"

Why angry: 12th lord = humility; in 6th house (fights, quarrels) = humility is gone, person fights instead → anger follows.

Why sinner: 6th house = house of sin; 12th lord (who should promote moksha/humility) diverted to sinful fighting.

Counterpoint (important): Vipariita Rajyoga applies — dusthana lord in another dusthana. Person may actually be fighting for dharma (dharma activist), not a sinner. From 9th and 10th houses, placement is actually good.

"Do not jump to conclusion if you see 12th lord in 6th house. Depending on relationship with 9th and 10th lords, this can actually be a blessing."

— PVNR

Why sad (dukhi): From 5th house (emotional stability): 8th lord in 8th from 5th = total break of emotional stability.

Why interested in other women:

  • 12th = house of bed pleasures; 12th lord aspects his own house from 6th (the house of sins/quarrels)
  • "Planet of bed pleasures, aspecting from house of sins = willing to commit sin for sensual pleasure"
