Vehicular Accident — Natal D-16 and the 2010 Tithi Praveśa Chart

Native: male, born May 9, 1983, 1:48 PM IST. Leo lagna in the rāśi chart.
Event: October 12, 2010. Car totalled; the native had only minor injuries. He was on his way to a temple. He got a new car in the same period.

Which period to look at

• Vimśottarī: Ketu mahādaśā, Rāhu antardaśā.
• The mahādaśā need not show it. Looking back on the seven years of Ketu daśā twenty years later, the accident will not be what stands out. Within the one year of an antardaśā it can be an important event. So read the antardaśā lord.
• Ketu–Rāhu as such can show sudden events.

Natal D-16 (Ṣoḍaśāṁśa): Rāhu

D-16 is the chart of vehicles.

• D-16 lagna is 23° Cancer. Rāhu and Ketu are at 3° Capricorn — the 7th sign, but well short of the lagna degree, so the teacher places them in the 6th house by longitude.
• Applying the rule for nodes from Part 4:
  • House occupied: the 6th, a malefic house. So they are malefic.
  • No planet is with them. The strongest aspect on Rāhu is Saturn's, 81% (graha dṛṣṭi from Cancer). Saturn owns the 7th and 8th here; the teacher treats him as neutral. An aspect is weaker than a conjunction, so the occupied house decides: malefic.
• Rāhu owns the 8th (Aquarius) and sits in the 6th. The 8th is the house of unexpected events, the 6th of struggle. Both are houses of accident.
• Seeing Rāhu antardaśā coming, one could have said "be a little careful this year". That is not useful for a whole year, so go to the annual chart.

Tithi Praveśa chart for 2010–11

• Cast for April 10, 2010, 11:25:48 PM (Chaitra Kṛṣṇa Dvādaśī). Sagittarius lagna in the rāśi chart. Ruler of the year: Sun.
• The event fell in Venus daśā of the annual Tithi Aṣṭottarī daśā.
• D-16 of the annual chart: Aries lagna. Venus is the 2nd and 7th lord, in Capricorn. For Aries lagna Parāśara has just listed him as a malefic and the direct killer.

Modifying Venus by association (he owns the 2nd):

• Nobody is with him. Aspects on him in D-16: Jupiter 90.5%, Mars 82% (graha dṛṣṭi — Jupiter's 5th-house aspect from Virgo, Mars's 4th-house aspect from Libra).
• The software first showed Mercury at 73%, which made no sense. The option "aspected positions from natal chart" was ticked, so it was measuring annual planets against natal positions. Not a bug.
• Worked by hand: Jupiter at 17°40' Virgo, Venus at 23°23' Capricorn, so 5°40' past 120°. The teacher's rough figure is 90%; the software gives 90.5%.
• Mars and Jupiter are benefics for Aries lagna, so Venus picks up a little beneficence as 2nd lord. He still owns the 7th. Net: a malefic, but an average one, not a terrible one.

Why an accident, and why the vehicle:

• As the māraka he can "kill" as far as the vehicle is concerned. But a killer without a 6th/8th link does not give an accident.
• The two planets aspecting him: Jupiter sits in the 6th house with Gulika; Mars is the 8th lord and the dispositor of Rāhu and Ketu, the kārakas for such events. The teacher sums this up as the māraka being tied to both the 6th and the 8th.
• A4, the ārūḍha of the 4th, shows the car. The teacher reads A4 in Aquarius. Venus is in the 12th from it: loss of the vehicle.
• 4th house as lagna (Cancer), for vehicle and comfort: Venus is the bādhaka lord placed in the 7th, a māraka sthāna.
• Moon as lagna. Venus, lagna and Moon can each be taken as the reference for vehicles. Venus and lagna are not strong here. The Moon in Pisces is with a planet and aspected by its lord Jupiter — afflicted, but strong. The 4th from the Moon is Gemini; Venus is in the 8th from it. Of the two planets aspecting Venus, Jupiter is the 7th lord from Gemini and Mars is the 6th lord.

The new car:

• From A4 in Aquarius, Venus is the 4th and 9th lord, a yogakāraka. He is ill-placed in the 12th from A4, so he gives the loss of the car, and as yogakāraka he also gives a new one.
• The native said he still thinks twice when he drives. That is not from A4.

"How you feel when you drive the car is not from A4. That is from the 4th house only. A4 is the actual vehicle that you have there. It's a tangible thing. Ārūḍhas are tangible."

• The Moon is afflicted by Saturn in this D-16, and Venus is badly placed from the 4th of both lagna and Moon. Tension and unease about cars and luxuries during Venus daśā is expected. Read feelings from the 4th house, especially from the Moon. Read the car itself from A4.

D-30 (Triṁśāṁśa) of the annual chart

Use Parāśara's triṁśāṁśa. The three planets that give evils in D-30 are the 6th lord, the 8th lord and the bādhaka lord.

• D-30 lagna is Aquarius. Venus is the bādhaka lord.
• He is with Rāhu and Ketu, in Gemini. Planets with the nodes give suffering. Bādhaka shows the unexpected: some unexpected suffering.
• He is the 4th lord, placed in the 2nd from the 4th house. One can speculate that the suffering relates to vehicles.

If the D-16 lagna were different

• With the usual (Drik) positions, a moment 7 minutes 11 seconds earlier puts the annual D-16 lagna in Pisces. Venus is then the 8th lord, and an accident fits better, since 6 and 8 are the houses of accident. Seven minutes is too much to assume.
• 55 seconds later it becomes Taurus. Venus is then lagna lord and 6th lord in the 9th, which is the bādhaka sthāna for Taurus. To use that, the birth time would have to move forward by about a minute and every earlier event be rechecked.
• The site computes this year's Tithi Praveśa moment about 13 minutes earlier than the teacher's software (11:12:45 PM), which already gives Pisces in D-16. The chart shown on this page uses the moment given in class.

Surya Siddhanta — A Digression

The teacher is adding a Surya Siddhanta model to his software alongside the Drik positions, and checks every example against it.

What it is and why he is looking at it

• Surya Siddhanta positions can be a couple of degrees either side of the visible positions.
• It is what astrologers used for millennia and what Varāhamihira used. Nāḍī texts enumerate charts in it: a native whose Mercury is in the first degrees of Aries by Drik/Lahiri was told by nāḍī readers that Mercury is at the end of Pisces, which is where Surya Siddhanta puts it. Vākya pañcāṅgas in the south rest on it too.
• The text is corrupt in places and can be read several ways. There are about as many models as there are pañcāṅga makers. The one he programmed came from a monk who computes pañcāṅgas for maṭhas in North India, in a tradition that passed it only to brahmacārīs.
• He has not made up his mind. "I still don't believe in anything." He has not ruled it out either. All divisional longitudes change drastically under it.
• His guru's intuition was that there is some worth in it, so he took it up. Announcing it brought abusive mail.

Gross planet and subtle planet

• One view: the old models were approximations, and with better technology you use the visible positions.
• The other view: planets act through a subtle body on our subtle body, and the subtle planet need not sit exactly where the physical one is. The ṛṣis gave the positions meant for astrology; later people took them for a rough model and replaced them.
• He checked whether Surya Siddhanta ever matched the sky, in Varāhamihira's or Āryabhaṭa's time. With the version he programmed it never does; the deviation is always there, larger for some planets at some times.
• Svāmī Vimalānanda, in the Aghora books, speaks of gross and subtle planets and calls the physical Saturn a mirror image of the one who acts.
• Philosophical speculation settles nothing. What counts is the precedent: the nāḍī writers and Varāhamihira used it and gave precise readings, while Drik came in over the last hundred years.
• On nāḍī readings: some are fake or sold for costly remedies; some texts are genuine but the readers are impatient in finding the right leaf. Where the leaf is right, the readings are precise down to the parents' names.

This example under Surya Siddhanta

• Tithi Praveśa falls at 12:55:42 AM on April 11, 2010 — about an hour and a half later.
• Rāśi lagna is still Sagittarius, now at its end. The D-16 lagna becomes Pisces. The annual daśā at the event is still Venus.
• D-16: Sun and Venus in Aquarius; Mercury, Mars and Jupiter in Libra; Rāhu and Ketu in Capricorn; Moon and Saturn in lagna.
• Venus is the 8th lord, Sun is the 6th lord. The 6th and 8th lords are together in the 12th house of loss, and Venus is combust.
• Moon and Saturn in lagna show a sad event. From the daśā lord Venus, the Moon is the 6th lord, and he is with Saturn, the lord of Venus's sign. Venus daśā, Moon antardaśā gave the event.
• The teacher finds this cleaner than "Venus is aspected by the planets of the 6th and 8th". He does not conclude from it.

"You can't conclude something like this based on one example. You have to go through hundreds of examples of various kinds, because there can be data error, there can be all kinds of noise."

The site does not compute Surya Siddhanta positions, so this D-16 cannot be shown here.

Comparing One Planet Across Two Vargas (Aṁśa-tulya Aṁśa)

The idea

Take one planet. Note its sign in one divisional chart and its sign in another. Count from the first to the second. That placement shows how what the planet does in one area of life works with what it does in the other.

• D-9: blessings carried from previous lives.
• D-30: suffering, punishment for past evils.
• D-10: work. D-16: vehicles, luxuries, comfort. D-24: learning. D-20: spiritual practice.

"It's not like navāṁśa and triṁśāṁśa are two different charts. Navāṁśa, triṁśāṁśa, rāśi, all are basically one chart. There is only one zodiac."

• Every planet has one aṁśa point in each division. These are all points in the same zodiac and they interact: which are together, which are in 6–8 (ṣaṣṭhāṣṭaka), which are in trines.
• You could also compare Venus of one varga with the Moon of another, but that gets messy — too many degrees of freedom. Stay with one planet.
• It works in the natal chart and in the Tithi Praveśa chart.

Example 1 — the accident year (annual chart of Part 5)

• D-16 Venus is in Capricorn. D-30 Venus is in Gemini — the 6th from it. The Venus who gives suffering works against the Venus who gives vehicles and luxuries. Suffering over the vehicle.
• D-9 Venus is in Virgo — the 9th from D-16 Venus. Blessing in the matter of vehicles as well.

"In the same period, it is possible that your car was destroyed, you went through a lot of suffering for the car, some punishment, and also you got a new car. You were blessed with a new car."

• Same annual chart, D-10 (Pisces lagna): Moon and Mars, the 5th and 9th lords, are together in the 4th with Saturn. Their D-9 placements are in trine to their D-10 sign. Their periods can be good for career.
• Venus is the 8th lord in D-10, in Libra, and could show career trouble. His D-30 sign, Gemini, is a trine from Libra. The planet that could punish has his D-30 energy in a house of blessing, so there is no danger. (The teacher first misread this placement; a student corrected him.)

Example 2 — the teacher's layoff, 2002

Birth data read out in class: April 4, 1970, 5:47:08 PM IST, Machilipatnam (81°08'E, 16°10'N). Most of the engineering team at the startup where he worked was laid off on about August 12, 2002. Annual Tithi Praveśa chart for 2002–03:

• The layoff came in Moon daśā of the annual Tithi Aṣṭottarī daśā.
• D-10 Moon is in Sagittarius. In D-30 the Moon is exalted in Taurus, and within D-30 he is the 8th lord in the 6th house: big suffering, delivered strongly because exalted.
• Taurus is the 6th from Sagittarius. The Moon who gives punishment sits badly from the Moon who gives career. A layoff was possible in that period.
• Mars daśā began days later. In D-10 Mars is the lagna lord in the 11th, aspecting the 5th: a new beginning. In D-9 he is a yogakāraka, and he is in the same sign as in D-10. Blessing from the past supports the work.
• Around August 17–20 he had an offer from another startup, and he joined about September 1, in Mars's period.

Limits

• A student pointed out that the same Moon's D-9 and D-10 placements are also in trine. The teacher: see which one is stronger. Here the Moon is the 8th lord, exalted, in the 6th of D-30.
• This alone cannot say someone will lose a job. D-10 by itself must show it. Combining it with D-9 and D-30 gives finer insight.
• The same can be done with D-24 and D-30 for someone who cannot focus on studies, or with D-20 and D-30 for obstacles in spiritual practice.

The name

A student asked if this is Sarvatobhadra. It is not. The tradition speaks of placing rāśi planets in the navāṁśa and navāṁśa planets in the rāśi. Here a varga is set against a varga; the teacher offers "aṁśa-tulya aṁśa" as a name if one is wanted.
