Contentment = 4th House from Any House (Wealth→5H, Children→8H, Relations→10H) & 6th House = Shadripu Root (7H–12H = Branches: Kama/Krodha/Lobha/Moha/Madha/Matsarya)

Contentment Is Seen from the 4th House from Any House

The rule comes out of the last result, the "medium comfort from wealth" of the 6th lord in the 6th. The teacher notes he had not given it in class before.

"So the lesson is the fourth house from any house can be seen for contentment with respect to that matter."

• This is not about gaining the thing. It is about the sense of contentment with it.
• Contentment with wealth (2nd) → the 5th house.
• Contentment with children (5th) → the 8th house.
• Contentment with relations (7th) → the 10th house.

The two-house test:

• Happiness: a planet must have a good influence on both lagna and the 4th to make the person happy. The 4th alone is not enough. (This is the 6th lord in the 5th, with argala on both.)
• Wealth: a planet with a positive influence on both the 2nd and the 5th makes the person wealthy and contented with his wealth.
• If the influence on the 2nd is good and the influence on the 5th is average or negative, he is wealthy and the contentment is average or bad. That is the 6th lord in the 6th: 5th lord in the 5th from the 2nd, but only 2nd lord in the 2nd from the 5th.
• In general: if the 4th from a house is also strong, contentment from the matter of that house is high.

6th House = Root of the Ṣaḍ-ripus; 7th–12th = Branches

This comes up while explaining why the 6th lord in the 4th is jealous.

• The 6th house in general shows enemies and weaknesses.
• The six inner enemies — kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya — are all rooted in the 6th house. The teacher reminds the class he has given this before: the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th houses each carry one of them.

"6th house is the root of the tree and 7th, 8th up to 12th house are the branches. One branch shows kāma, another branch shows krodha and so on."

In this class he spells out only the last: the 12th is the house of humility, and of jealousy when humility is missing. The other rows follow the order in which he lists the houses and the six ripus.

How it is used:

• A weakness needs two things: the 6th lord (the root, taken from lagna because a quality belongs to the self) and a link to the branch house.
• 6th lord in the 4th: the lord of weaknesses has argala on the 12th. Result: jealousy, not humility.

The 2nd from Any House Feeds It — Sustainer and Māraka

What feeds a house

• The 2nd from any house is what feeds that house — its resources, what it can put to use.
• The 2nd house is the meal you eat, the food that goes in and nourishes the body. The 2nd from the 2nd — the 3rd — is the resources for that meal: what food is available to you.
• Jupiter in the 3rd: excellent food, Jupiterian food (sweet is one possibility), is available. Saturn in the 2nd: he is not eating it.
• The classics rarely speak of the 3rd for food because the kind of food is secondary. The planet in the 2nd shows whether the body is fed at all.
• The same can be done from every house, but first you must understand what "resource" means for dharma, for karma, for lābha, for vyaya.

Why the same house is the māraka

• Prāṇa is sustained by what you take in — food, water, anything. Death and the cutting off of sustenance happen together; which causes which is debatable.
• So the 2nd is the house of sustenance and of cutting off sustenance. The same planet can sustain you or withdraw the sustenance, depending on strength and other combinations.
• The 2nd lord is not a killer "no matter what". See his strength, whether he is malefic, his relation with the lagna lord and with the 8th lord, and his relation with Saturn, the kāraka of longevity.
• Upapada: the 2nd lord from Upapada sustains the marriage, and he is strengthened and prayed to for that. Weak, afflicted and an enemy of the Upapada lord, he breaks the marriage.

"What actually sustains you, what gets you going, is what breaks you. This is the fact of life."

A house names the matter, not the amount

• The 2nd lord shows food — not having food, and not lacking food. The 3rd lord shows vikrama — he may give it or give the lack of it. Other factors decide.
• "Just because I say this is a glass, it doesn't mean it is full or empty. You have to see whether it is full or empty."
• "6th lord — problems. 2nd lord — a lot of money." That is elementary astrology. People who want everything sorted into good and bad are deluding themselves.
