Marriage Chart Analysis — Two Boys for One Girl (Personality Matching)

A student brings three charts: a girl and two prospective bridegrooms. The marriage is not yet fixed; the family is considering both. Which boy matches better?

The Nakshatra Border Problem (Boy 2)

• With Jagannatha ayanamsa the Moon is in Chitra 1st pada by 6 arc-seconds. He entered Chitra at 7:34:49 PM; the recorded time is 7:35 PM. Eleven seconds earlier and it is Hasta.
• It is not only an ayanamsa question. With Lahiri it is Hasta 4th pada, changing to Chitra shortly after. And the recorded time can easily be wrong by five minutes.
• Dashas cannot decide it. On the border the balance is either a few days of Moon dasha left or a few days into Mars dasha, so every later event falls in the same dasha and antardasha either way.
• How to settle it:
  1. Take five or six major events (starting school, a degree, joining a job, promotion, leaving the motherland) and look at nakshatra-based transits — where the dasha lord, Jupiter and Saturn were, and in which tara. With Moon in Hasta instead of Chitra every tara shifts by one nakshatra.
  2. The nature of the person. "Even if it is on the border, Hasta is Hasta, Chitra is Chitra." The boundaries are crisp.
• The teacher leaves the nakshatra open and asks for events to be sent to him.

Guna Score (36-point table)

• The logic of the low score: Purva Phalguni is a nakshatra of Venus, Chitra of Mars, and the two are taken as enemies. These are thumb rules.
• Not everyone born in Purva Phalguni has the same mind. The Moon is not the only planet that shapes the personality.

"Instead of making such an important pronouncement just based on the nakshatra, let us look at the chart, see what kind of personality they have."

Girl's Personality (Libra Lagna)

• Libra lagna aspected by Mercury from the 7th (graha drishti): by itself, diplomatic and balanced. But Mercury is in Aries, a sign of Mars.
• Mars at 28° Pisces has a very close 8th aspect (graha drishti) on the lagna at 24° Libra. Venus, from the same sign, has only a 3/4 aspect.
• Lagna lord Venus is in Pisces in the 6th house, at 27°, with Mars at 28° and Ketu. Mars and Ketu are 7–8 arc-minutes apart; Venus is within one degree of both. "This is terrible actually."
• The lagna lord says more about the personality than the lagna.
• Arudha Lagna is in Leo — again a fiery sign.
• Reading: she knows how to be diplomatic, but the personality is extremely fiery — bold, stubborn, aggressive, and a little erratic and unpredictable because of Ketu.

The Student's Feedback

• The student knows the girl: she is not aggressive, but she is stubborn, and very disciplined.
• The teacher: discipline is Saturn, not Mars. As a Libra lagna she can behave in a balanced way with people in general and still be aggressive with those closest to her — siblings, husband, mother.

"She is capable of behaving aggressively, and even if not aggressively, Mars will at least make the person stubborn."

Kuja Dosha — What the Matching Is For

• People have various definitions of kuja dosha. Whether any of them is met here does not matter: this is a strongly Martian person.
• The shastra says: for a person with kuja dosha, get a person with kuja dosha. Put a meek person with a very strong one and the strong one makes mincemeat of the other.

"Not that they will have a happy marriage, but the unhappiness is shared. It is not limited to one person. If the husband yells at you, the wife can yell back."

• The textbook definitions are thumb rules. Match the strength of the personalities.
• The teacher sets aside reading her 7th house and Navamsa for the kind of husband she is destined to get, and takes the common-sense approach: what are the two personalities, and do they gel?

Boy 1 (Aquarius Lagna)

• Lagna 12° Aquarius, Venus 8° Aquarius. A student objects that Venus, with fewer degrees, is in the 12th bhava. The teacher: he is 4° from the lagna and has a strong influence on it.
• Lagna lord Saturn is in Cancer in the 6th house, with the Moon in his own sign. Cancer is a sensitive sign, the Moon a sensitive planet; the lagna lord placed there makes the person sensitive and emotional.
• Aquarius lagna: philosophical, reasonably well balanced.
• Reading: "a sensitive thinker".
• With her: an assertive, stubborn person and a very sensitive one do not go together that well. Not a great match.
• But lagna lord in the 6th is always a fighter. He is not meek. He will brood over why she did that, and he will fight back.
• The marriage will not be happy but it will sustain. "It is not like one person will die or run away or commit suicide or file for divorce."
• The two lagnas (Libra, Aquarius) are well related, and so are the two Moons.
• Conclusion: a strictly average match — the same answer the gunas give. He is more accommodating and more sattvic than she is. A great match for her would be someone as fierce as she is who also has something in common with her.

Boy 2 (Cancer Lagna)

• Saturn is in the lagna sign, though by bhava he falls in the 12th.
• Jupiter, the 9th lord, strong in his own sign Pisces, aspects the lagna (5th aspect, about 85–90% by degree) and the lagna lord Moon (7th aspect).
• Cancer lagna = sensitive. But the lagna lord Moon is in Virgo, an earth sign: stable, practical, pragmatic, adaptive.
• Reading: more than sensitivity for himself, it is compassion. Compassionate, pious, very dharmic.
• With her: a balanced but stubborn person and this person — he should be able to manage well. "This person may be able to handle her better."
• A student asks about Mars. Mars is in Taurus in the 11th house: rasi drishti on the lagna, and a half graha drishti on the Moon. The teacher: he is a friend of the Moon, a functional benefic, the yogakaraka for Cancer lagna, and in a pragmatic sign — the bull, hard work.
• In her chart Mars is with Ketu: "a spark of fire accompanied by a lot of bombs around." Here it is only the spark.
• Jupiter aspects the Moon, is a friend of both Mars and Moon, and can dominate.
• Sun and Mercury are in the 6th house.

Karmic Link Technique

Method: set one person's Navamsa beside the other's rasi chart and look for the same signs, houses and planets repeating around the marriage points — the 7th house, the Graha Arudha of the 7th lord, the Darapada (A7), the Upapada. Repetition means a karmic link, and a chance that these two will actually marry.

Boy 2's Navamsa against the girl's rasi:

• Question asked: what kind of wife can this person expect? The teacher takes the Graha Arudha of the 7th lord and the 7th house.
• His Navamsa 7th house is Pisces: argala from Venus (4th from it), graha drishti of Mars and of Saturn. Where both drishtis are available, give preference to rasi drishti.
• In her rasi chart Pisces is where the lagna lord Venus sits with Mars and Ketu.
• The teacher: there is some link, but not a strong one. He then goes through further points — her Saturn in the 10th, her Moon in the 11th, Mercury with Sun — and finds "some links between the two charts".

The girl's Navamsa against Boy 1's rasi:

• Her Navamsa Darapada is in Cancer. No rasi drishti falls on Cancer there, but Saturn has a 3/4 graha drishti on it.
• Boy 1 has his Paka Lagna (the sign of the lagna lord) in Cancer, and Saturn in Cancer.
• From her Darapada the 3rd–9th axis (Virgo–Pisces) is crowded: Mercury, Rahu, Venus, Mars, Ketu.
• From his Paka Lagna the same axis is empty, but its lord Mercury is with Mars and Sun and is aspected by Jupiter, who is with Ketu. So the same planets fall on the axis by lordship and aspect.
• "So there are similarities."

Upapada:

• The lagna is not in a trine from the Upapada, but the Paka Lagna is, and the Paka Lagna counts for more than the lagna. Upapada matching is fine.

Where he leaves it:

• Comparing the two, the teacher says the similarities are stronger for one chart than for the other, and that there is a chance of a karmic link — "some chance that she will actually end up marrying this person." The recording does not make clear which boy he is pointing at.

"Fair match. The second one will deal with her more compassionately and suffer if need be. The first one will be a little sensitive and a little unhappy with her stubbornness, but he will be able to assert himself, not really be steamrolled by her."
