Argala Clarifications (Rahu/Ketu Reversed Sthanas, Debilitated Badha) & Functional Benefic/Malefic Rules
Rahu/Ketu reversed Argala sthanas: normal planets create Argala from 2nd/4th/11th/5th; Rahu/Ketu create Argala from their OPPOSITE positions — 12th/10th/3rd/9th. Rahu in 12th creates the same type as a normal planet in 2nd; they ADD together when both are present. Sanskrit proof: Parashara uses "tamograha" in dual case (dvivacanam = exactly two) = Rahu+Ketu only; never Mars or Saturn. Debilitated badha planet cannot obstruct Argala (no force to block). House-specific obstruction: planet in 12th obstructs ONLY 2nd-house Argala, not 4th or 11th. Functional benefic/malefic determination: Trikona lords (1/5/9) = always benefic; Dusthana lords (3/6/11) = always malefic; 2H/8H/12H lords = always neutral; Kendra lords (4/7/10) = neutral for natural malefics, MALEFIC for natural benefics (Kendradhipati Dosha). Combining two-house ownership: Neutral+Benefic=Benefic; Neutral+Malefic=Malefic; Benefic+Malefic=Neutral. Kendradhipati Dosha nuance: if natural benefic is in own sign forming Mahapurusha yoga (e.g., Jupiter in Sagittarius = Hamsa) → dosha reduced; Raj Yoga still works even with dosha present.
"Parashara uses "tamograha" in dual case — exactly two dark planets. Never Mars, never Saturn. Only Rahu and Ketu. When I correct myself, I want you to understand the Sanskrit proof, not just take my word for it."

Argala Clarifications and Q&A (Continuing from Lesson 83)
"Madha" in the Lagna/Pada/Madha Verse
PVNR's response to a student who found a different translation of BPHS:
- In the shloka: "Argala on lagna, pada, and madha → king born"
- PVNR's interpretation: madha = 10th house (house of achievements)
- Other translation found: madha = 7th house (house of desire, madha = infatuation)
- PVNR: "Both are tenable. I am not 100% sure mine is correct, and I am not convinced that one is wrong either. The beauty is that I did not read their translation first — I derived my own interpretation. That is how you must learn."
Key lesson: In Parashara, multiple interpretations are often valid; you must experiment and use intuition to confirm.
Rahu/Ketu Argala — Where They Operate
Question: If Rahu is in the 12th house, does he cause Argala?
Answer: Yes — for Rahu and Ketu, their Argala sthanas are reversed:
- Normal planets: Argala is FROM 2nd, 4th, 11th, 5th house (from the reference)
- Rahu/Ketu: Their Argala operates from the opposite houses — 12th, 10th, 3rd, 9th
So: Rahu in 12th causes the same type of Argala as a normal planet in 2nd
If both Jupiter (in 2nd) and Rahu (in 12th) are present → both cause 2nd-type Argala on the reference house → they ADD to each other
Badha (obstruction) for Rahu's Argala: would come from a planet in the 2nd house (opposing Rahu's 12th-house Argala)
"Simple: Rahu causes Argala from 12th, 10th, 3rd, 9th. Those are the same positions where a normal planet would cause badha. So when Rahu is there, instead of obstructing, he is contributing."
Tamograha Confirmation — Sanskrit Grammar Proof
Why only Rahu and Ketu reverse (Sanskrit proof given by PVNR):
- Parashara uses the word "tamograha" in dual case (dvivacanam) = tamograha (two dark ones)
- Sanskrit: Ramah (one), Ramau (two), Ramah (three+)
- "Tamograha" (dual form) = exactly two dark planets = Rahu and Ketu
- In other BPHS chapters, Parashara uses "tamograha" consistently in dual form
- Therefore "tamograha" never means Mars and Saturn; it specifically and only means Rahu + Ketu
Debilitated Planets Cannot Obstruct Argala
Key rule (confirmed with example):
- If the planet in the badha sthana is debilitated or very weak, it cannot obstruct the Argala
- A weak planet does not have the force to block
- Example: Moon debilitated in Scorpio → cannot obstruct Saturn's Argala even if placed in the badha sthana
Obstructions Are House-Specific
Planets in the badha sthana obstruct only the corresponding Argala type, not all Argalas:
- Planet in 12th obstructs only the 2nd-house Argala (not 4th or 11th Argalas)
- Jupiter in 3rd obstructs only the 11th-house Argala
- They do not "pool" their obstruction powers against multiple Argalas
Functional Benefic/Malefic Determination — Consolidated Rules
PVNR summarizes the complete rule for students to memorize:
| House Type | Effect on Owning Planet |
|---|---|
| Trikona (1, 5, 9) | Always benefic for all planets owning them |
| Dusthana (3, 6, 11) | Always malefic |
| Neutral (2, 8, 12) | Always neutral |
| Kendra (4, 7, 10) | Neutral for natural malefics; Malefic for natural benefics (Kendradhipati Dosha) |
Combining two-house ownership:
- Neutral + Benefic = Benefic
- Neutral + Malefic = Malefic
- Benefic + Malefic = Neutral
Kendradhipati Dosha nuance:
- Natural benefics owning Kendras become malefic (Dosha)
- But: if that benefic is in its own sign forming a Mahapurusha yoga (e.g., Jupiter in Sagittarius = Hamsa Yoga) → Dosha is significantly reduced
- Raj Yoga still works even if a planet has Kendradhipati Dosha — cannot take away the Raj Yoga
- Degree of maleficence varies; it is not absolute
Why Kendra ownership is problematic for benefics:
- Kendras = Vishnu Sthanas = houses of voluntary effort (not forced karma)
- Malefics = good energy for material work → they thrive as Kendra lords
- Benefics = relaxed, giving nature → less effective at driving the "effort" of Kendra houses
- Hence: benefic owning Kendra = lesser performance in that role
Example (PVNR's own chart, Kanya/Virgo lagna):
- Mercury = lagna + 10th lord = neutral (trikona + kendra = combined neutral)
- Jupiter = 4th + 7th lord = two kendras = functionally malefic (ubhaya kendradhipatitva)
"Advanced students should know by heart who is functional benefic/malefic for each lagna. Memorize that table."
