Kala vs Hora Distinction, Best Activity per Planet's Kala & True Abhijit Muhurta
Kala = 1.5-hour generic division from sunrise (8 day + 8 night); shows best activity type for everyone. Hora = 1-hour specific division; king of whatever activity you start under it. Rahu Kalam: only puja/meditation — nothing else auspicious, Rahu ensures bad results if you try. Jupiter Kalam: Vedic knowledge and jyotisha. Venus Kalam: entertainment and enjoyment. Mercury Kalam: scholarly work, writing. Hora = king (above panchanga); panchanga = ministers. Select muhurta hora whose lord is beneficially connected to the relevant house in your natal chart. Hora lord key: at birth, at TP start, at any activity start. True Abhijit Muhurta: NOT 12 noon on the clock — it is the exact moment when Sun crosses the 10th house cusp at the same degree as Lagna; varies by location. PVNR: sunrise-based hora is the only correct method; Mahakala (6 AM LMT) is only for prasna.
"The true Abhijit Muhurta is the moment when Sun is exactly on the 10th house cusp — when the karaka for karma blesses the house of karma. That has nothing to do with 12 o'clock."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Kala — The 1.5-Hour Division of Time
What It Is
- The day+night is divided into 16 equal parts = each is a Kala = 1.5 hours
- Starting from Sunrise (PVNR: "Sunrise is sacrosanct")
- 8 in day, 8 in night; each ruled by a planet
Kala vs Hora
| Kala | Hora | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 1.5 hours | 1 hour |
| Purpose | Deciding what type of activity to do | Deciding when to start an activity |
| Nature | Generic — applies to everyone in that location | Specific — depends on your natal chart |
| Use | "During this kala, these activities are best for everyone" | "This hora lord rules this entire activity you're starting" |
What to Do During Each Planet's Kala
| Planet's Kala | Best Activities |
|---|---|
| Rahu Kalam | ONLY: puja and meditation; nothing else auspicious; avoid starting anything |
| Surya (Sun) Kalam | Visit temples; dharmic activities; worship |
| Chandra (Moon) Kalam | Read literature; socialize; be with good people; enjoy life |
| Guru (Jupiter) Kalam | Discuss Vedic knowledge; study jyotisha; gain self-knowledge (atma jnana) |
| Shukra (Venus) Kalam | Entertainment; love; romance; movies; enjoyment |
| Mangala (Mars) Kalam | Fighting; bold action; competitive activity; moving (physical labor) |
| Budha (Mercury) Kalam | Scholarly activity; writing; reading; communication; digesting learned knowledge |
| Shani (Saturn) Kalam | Sadhana; tapas; disciplined or hard work; moving things |
| Ketu | No kala assigned |
- "Each class here happens during Jupiter Kalam — that is why Vedic knowledge is being discussed"
- During Rahu Kalam: "Either do puja or do nothing — cheating and suffering are the other options, and Rahu will ensure you get those if you try anything else"
Mahakala Hora vs. True Hora
- True Hora: based on actual Sunrise as epoch → PVNR's preferred method
- Mahakala Hora: based on 6 AM LMT (Local Mean Time) or 6 AM clock time → Sanjay Rath's method for prasna
- PVNR: "Sunrise-based hora is the only correct method. Others are nonsense for muhurta. Mahakala is only useful for prasna."
- In JH software: Settings → Alt+PC+W → "Hora and Weekday start options" — choose Sunrise or 6 AM LMT
Hora — The 1-Hour Planetary Hour
Core Principle
- Hora lord at the beginning of an activity = ruler (king) of that entire activity
- "Like the ruler of the year (hora at TP start) controls the whole year, the hora at any start controls that whole activity"
- Examples of what hora lord controls:
- Job start hora = "lord of the job" for your entire tenure there
- Book reading start hora = ruler of your understanding of that book
- Marriage = hora lord controls the nature of the marriage
- TP chart = hora lord = ruler of the year
How to Use Hora for Muhurta
- Select a hora whose lord is auspicious for the relevant house in your natal chart:
- Joining a job → select hora of a planet good for your 10H (10L, or planet aspecting 10H, or argala on 10H)
- Marriage → select hora of a planet good for 7H and UL
- "Each hora comes 3.5 times per day" → you have multiple choices
- Don't insist on only the exact 10L hora; any planet that is beneficially connected to 10H works
Hora and Kala Together
- In TP and muhurta charts: 5 panchanga lords = 5 ministers; Hora lord = the king
- "The hora lord is above the panchanga; he is king; they are ministers"
- "Make sure the hora lord is well-placed in the chart AND is a good planet in your natal chart"
Day Signs and Night Signs
Used in prasna for which sign to start the 5-minute Hora sign sequence:
- Night (strong) signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer + Sagittarius, Capricorn
- Day (strong) signs: Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio + Aquarius, Pisces
Use day sign of a planet during daytime hora; night sign during nighttime hora. (This follows from Rasi-based considerations; direct explanation given in PVNR's book)
Abhijit Muhurta — The True Meaning
Common Understanding vs. Reality
- Common belief: "12 noon is always an auspicious time"
- PVNR: "This is a corruption of Kali Yuga. If you change the clock for daylight saving, what was 12 now becomes 11 or 1. That's meaningless."
True Abhijit Muhurta
- The real Abhijit Muhurta = the precise moment when Sun exactly crosses the 10th house cusp
- At that moment: Sun (karaka for karma) = in the 10th house (house of karma) at the exact same degree/minute/second as the Lagna
- "Sun is most powerful when exactly on top — on the 10th house cusp"
- Logic: Sun = karaka for karma; 10H = house of karma; when Sun blesses karma house = extremely auspicious
- Perfect Abhijit = Lagna, Sun, and 10H cusp all at the same degree, minute, second → "no doshas touch you"
- Matching degree+minute = very good; matching only degree = some doshas still apply
- This happens close to 12 noon (but not exactly at 12:00 on the clock)
- On the equator: Sun = perfectly overhead at noon = exact Abhijit. Elsewhere: varies.
Yamaghanda and Gulika Kala
- Certain 1.5-hour slots within the day are given to Yamakanta and Gulika
- Yamaghanda (also called Yamakala/Yamagandham): avoid starting auspicious activities
- Gulika Kala: similarly inauspicious period
- "Stay away from Yamaghanda and Gulika kala" — do not start auspicious events during these
