The Example Chart

The recording opens after the native's Rasi and Dasamsa have already been read. What the class knows about him:

• Male, born 1976. Engineer (B.E., about 1993–97), working in the United States on a work visa; green card application filed and in process.
• Feels he is not recognised at work. Wants either an MBA or his own consulting business.
• Puts a lot of money in stocks, in India as well, and has gained. One stock bought at ₹34 stood at ₹800.
• Has a deformity in one leg from birth.
• First child, a son, born 28 April 2006, five weeks before the class.

Rasi placements used in this class

• Taurus lagna. Jupiter, the 8th and 11th lord, is in lagna.
• Venus, lord of lagna and of the 6th, is in Scorpio in the 7th.
• Sun (debilitated), Mars, Mercury and Rahu are in Libra in the 6th. Rahu is co-lord of the 10th (Aquarius).
• Saturn, the yogakaraka (9th and 10th lord), is in Cancer in the 3rd.
• Moon and Ketu are in Aries in the 12th.

Birth time

• Earlier in the class the time had been moved back a little from the Dasamsa. In this recording the Siddhamsa (D24) lagna is tested between Virgo and Leo, Leo is accepted, and the time is set "backward just enough so that it is on the border".
• The nakshatra dasha used for this chart is Dwisaptati Sama Dasha (lagna lord in the 7th), not Vimshottari. "Saturn dasha" and "Venus dasha" below are periods of that dasha.

Hora Chart (D2) — Finances of a Risk-Taker

"Hora chart is generally finances, financial situation, the wealth that you own, the resources that you have."

The class reads a twelve-sign Hora chart, not the Sun–Moon hora of two signs. In it:

• Taurus lagna with Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Mercury and Ketu all in lagna.
• Venus, the lagna lord, in Scorpio in the 7th.
• Moon in Aries in the 12th. Rahu in Libra in the 6th. Saturn in Leo in the 4th.
• The site's D-2 follows a different hora scheme and does not show these placements. In the Rasi chart too, the 8th lord Jupiter is in lagna and the lagna lord Venus is in Scorpio; Mars is in lagna only in the Hora chart.

A student jokes that a crowded Taurus lagna — the 2nd sign of the natural zodiac, the sign of money — must mean great wealth. The teacher does not accept that as a rule. He asks what yogas are on that house: Guru–Mangala yoga, and in one sign the 7th lords Ketu and Mars, the 4th lord Sun, the 5th lord Mercury and the 8th and 11th lord Jupiter.

"So many Raj Yogas, so many bad yogas, so many weird yogas are there. But does it make sense that he is a risk taker?"

Who is a risk-taker

• Mars is the karaka of risk-taking.
• The 8th house is the house of risk and gambling.
• The lagna lord shows how you apply your intelligence.

In this Hora chart:

• The 8th lord Jupiter and the karaka Mars are together in lagna.
• The lagna lord Venus is in Scorpio, the 8th sign of the natural zodiac and its sign of risk.

"Lagna lord is in the 8th house of natural zodiac, the 8th lord of the chart is in lagna, and Mars is in lagna. So the fact that he is a risk-taker, he is a natural gambler, that makes good sense."

The rule, as he restates it when a student asks again: if Mars or the 8th house has a role with the lagna or the lagna lord, the person has a gambling attitude.

Stock market is a gamble

A student objects that the native studies before he invests. The teacher's answer: everybody studies. If study decided it, every analyst with two PhDs would be rich. "There is 5% science, 95% pure luck." You are guessing how people will react tomorrow.

Does he gain? A8 and A11

• The 8th house is gambling. A8 is the tangible gambling — money actually put in.
• A11 is the tangible gain.
• See whether there is a link between A8 and A11.

Saturn is the yogakaraka (9th and 10th lord) and his dasha is running.

• Saturn has argala on A8 and argala on A11. The yogakaraka links the two, so the native gains from the gamble.
• A3 (tangible initiative) is tied to Saturn too: an initiative to gamble, and gain from it.
• A7 is with Saturn. A7 is desire and also associations: his financial life will bring partnerships and dealings with people.

"All these results will be given by Saturn as far as finances are concerned." The Saturn dasha now running is favourable.

The period to watch: Moon

• Moon is the lord of the sign holding A11 and sits in the 12th house, the house of loss. "If the lord of any arudha is in the 12th house or the 8th house, there can be some problems relating to that house."
• From Saturn, the dasha lord, Moon is the 12th lord. So Moon has to do with the 12th house both from lagna and from the dasha lord.
• A2 is in the 12th house.
• Bhoga: Moon is in the 9th from Saturn; the 9th from Moon is the 8th house from lagna, and A6 is there — troubles, enemies.

"In finances, 12th house is something that we have to be careful about. It's basically losing. There is no commitment or compromise in finances. Basically, you lose money. Of course, it can be investment also."

With a favourable combination the 12th house is investment. Here Moon shows losing money. From 1 August to 17 September 2006 there is a possibility of losing a little. He should be careful.

Narayana Dasha of the Hora chart

Scorpio (the dasha just ended): the lagna lord Venus is in Scorpio, and Scorpio's lords are in lagna, taking part in the yogas there. Taurus and Scorpio dashas are good for him in general. This is when he made his money.

Gemini (now running): the 2nd house; its lord Mercury is in lagna. Gemini is a sirshodaya rasi, so the sign gives its own results in the first third and the lord gives at the end. The middle third goes to planets aspecting the sign. Nobody aspects Gemini, so the teacher takes the planets with argala on it: Moon and Rahu.

• A student asks whether "foreign" means foreign to the workplace or to the birthplace. The teacher: in finances it is judged from where you are financially — but he calls that his own view, a tough call.
• Combined with the Dwisaptati Sama Dasha: no big problem. "He won't lose a lot of money, but there is some loss indicated during the next year or year and a half."
• Advice: be careful with investments from August, and change the way of working so that he is an independent contractor.

"There is nobody who is always successful. If he has been successful for a while, he is ready for a fall."

Karthika Shukla Pratipada — Financial New Year Chart

Asked about the recent fall of the Indian stock market, the teacher calls it a transient: before the big crash there is a small crash, a recovery, another small crash, another recovery. He then shows the financial new year charts.

"The financial New Year chart, the day after Diwali chart, the Karthika Shukla Pratipada chakra. When Sun and Moon conjoin in the sign of Libra, the sign of market, we make a chart."

• The chart is cast for the moment of the Sun–Moon conjunction in Libra, at the capital of the country.
• It is read for the financial year that follows.
• In such a chart the 12th house is loss: "when you are talking about finances, there is no compromise or there is no commitment. It is showing the loss."

China, year from 2 November 2005 (Beijing)

• Scorpio lagna, with the 8th lord Mercury in lagna.
• Moon, Sun and Jupiter — the 9th lord, 10th lord and 5th lord — are in the 12th house of loss.
• What followed: the Chinese market did very badly from November 2005 to the time of the class. The teacher was told it fell by something like 40% in six or seven months; he says he does not know the exact numbers.

India, year from 2 November 2005 (New Delhi)

• Libra lagna. Sun (11th lord), Moon (10th lord) and Jupiter are in lagna — three benefics in lagna, though Jupiter is not a great planet for Libra.
• Mercury, the 9th lord, is in the 2nd house of wealth.
• "It's a much better chart than China." From November 2005 to the class the Indian market did well, despite the fall of the last couple of weeks.

India, year from 22 October 2006 (New Delhi) — the prediction made in class

• Scorpio lagna at 29°27′, the last degree of Scorpio: deep gandanta.
• Lagna lord Mars is in the 12th house with Sun, Moon and Jupiter again, and more planets besides. (Mercury and Venus are there too: six planets in Libra.)
• "This is exactly like China, probably even worse."

"It will be a huge fall, not like 5%, 10% we have seen in the last couple of years. This is a prelude. After Diwali, after October 22, 2006, huge crash."

• How it unfolds: at first each fall is bought. When people see it has not bottomed out, they stop buying, then panic and sell. Small investors who bought exuberantly in the last years face a big reality check. The fall of the last few weeks was only "an imaginary check".
• His advice in class: get out of the Indian market. He adds that nobody should invest on his judgment.
• The US market also looks bad, but more controlled; he expects a bigger drop in India.
• China has a better chart for the year from October 2006. More money may go to China than to India.
• For the native: a stock at ₹800 falling to ₹500 is still a gain over ₹34, but he will be unhappy. From August he should be careful.
