D-7 (Saptamsa) — Chart of Children

The teacher took two minutes at the end for this. A student confirmed Varun Gandhi is the only son.

Rules

• Same direction rule as the Drekkana: odd sign in Lagna, count forward; even sign, count backward.
• First child = 5th house. The second child is the younger sibling of the first: 3rd from there = 7th. Then 9th, 11th and so on.
• Take the sign where that house's lord sits as the child's Lagna.

Rahu and Ketu Stop the Flow

"Whenever you keep counting like this, 5th, 7th, 9th, when Rahu and Ketu are encountered, it will basically stop."

• A student thought a node at the very start would not stop the count, only one further on. The teacher: even in the 5th it can stop right there, if the 5th and 7th are not strong enough.
• Asked about a node met while still counting up to the 5th: "Then it will just go on." The detail was left for a later class.

First Child

• D-7 Lagna = Cancer, the 4th sign. Even. Count backward.
• 5th counted backward from Cancer = Pisces. Its lord Jupiter is in Pisces, own sign. Pisces is the first child's Lagna.
• Rahu is in Pisces with Jupiter. The count meets a node at the 5th itself.
• Verdict: only one child is likely. But Jupiter is very strong; had the native propitiated Jupiter there was a chance of a second.
• A second child would be the 7th counted backward = Capricorn. Its lord Saturn is in Aries; Aries would be that child's Lagna.

Reading the First Child from Pisces

Three different influences sit in his Lagna: Jupiter, Venus, Rahu.

• Ideals: strong, but challenged and prone to compromise. Venus and Rahu are spoilsports.
• Two Mahapurusha Yogas: Hamsa (Jupiter) and Bhadra (Mercury). Mercury is the stronger.
• Mercury is aspected by Jupiter, Venus and Rahu from Pisces and by Ketu from Virgo — rasi drishti, since every dual sign aspects the other dual signs. A permanent influence. Mercury does not mind: Venus, Rahu and Ketu are his friends and he behaves like them. "Mercury is fine even though Jupiter is not."
• Mercury, 4th lord in the 4th: balance and contentment, whether he is a minister or not. Strong Mercury, the karaka of speech: intelligent, logical, analytical, good at speech.
• Prediction made in class: Jupiter dasha begins in 2008. Jupiter is Lagna lord and 10th lord in own sign, so it is likely to be a very good dasha for the son's career — assuming a deceased father's chart still works. The son's own chart would give more confidence.

• Odd sign = male child. Even sign = female child.
• Four signs are reversed:

By Planet

• Male: Mars, Rahu, Sun, Jupiter.
• Female: Moon, Venus.

By Dignity

• An exalted planet shows a male child. A debilitated planet shows a female child.

Applied to the First Child (Pisces)

• Jupiter and Rahu, two planets, show male against one, Venus.
• Pisces shows male.
• Venus is exalted, which again shows male.
• Definitely a male child.
