BPHS Chapter 24 — 3rd Lord in the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Houses

Verse 34 — 3rd Lord in the 10th House

daśame sahajādhīśe jātaḥ sarvasukhānvitaḥ / svabhujārjitavittaś ca duṣṭastrībharaṇe rataḥ

• Sarvasukhānvitaḥ — accompanied by all kinds of comforts
• Svabhujārjitavittaḥ — vitta is money, svabhuja one's own shoulders, arjita earned: money earned by his own effort, a self-made man
• Duṣṭastrībharaṇe rataḥ — duṣṭa strī is an evil woman, bharaṇa is spending time with them and giving them money, rata is interested in: he is interested in keeping evil women

All comforts

• From the 10th he aspects the 4th house of comforts (7th graha dṛṣṭi) and is in a quadrant from it.
• He is the lord of the 12th from the 4th: expenditure on comforts.
• So the result is about spending on comforts. It does not mean he enjoys them all or is always happy.

"He spends lot of money to get the latest car, latest this, latest that, latest TV, latest refrigerator, latest washing machine. It may or may not enrich his life, but he spends a lot of money on comfort."

Self-made man

• The 3rd house is initiative, and it is placed in the career. He puts a lot of energy and initiative into his career.
• Someone who inherited from father, mother, uncle or grandfather would mostly not have to spend so much energy on career. So mostly he is self-made — "but there is no guarantee."
• Taking the 10th house as lagna, the 6th lord is in lagna. He has to overcome many obstacles before he accomplishes anything.
• Together: someone who did not start with much, overcame obstacles, made a name, and spends on comforts.

Entertains evil women

• The teacher calls this one "a googly".
• Relations are seen from the 7th house: who you interact with. A student's first answer was set aside as too specific.
• Take the 7th house as lagna. The 9th from the 7th is the 3rd house, and its lord is in the 4th from the 7th — the 8th from his own house.
• The 9th from the 7th shows the dharma followed in interacting with people, the dharma followed in relationships. Its lord in the 8th from it ruins that dharma.
• He interacts with adharmic people, or interacts with people in an adharmic way.
• Parashara says "evil women" because the 7th is normally taken as interaction with women. It need not be women; it can be business interaction too. The bottom line is adharmic affairs or adharmic relationships.
• A student asked whether the native himself is evil. Parashara did not say that. But if he entertains evil people and has dealings with them, then as far as relationships go he is not dharmic. It is adharma from the 7th house point of view.

Lord in the 8th from its own house

• The 3rd lord in the 10th is simply in the 8th from the 3rd. The lord of any house in the 8th from it can ruin the house. It can also give hard work relating to it.
• Read the 3rd as initiative and the placement is not bad: the 3rd is itself a not-so-auspicious house, and its lord goes to a bad house from it. He works hard on his initiative; he pursues it.
• Read the same house as the 9th from something and the lord in the 8th from it becomes a very evil thing.

Verse 35 — 3rd Lord in the 11th House

lābhe sahajādhīśe vyāpāre lābhavān sadā / vidyāhīno'pi medhāvī sāhasī parasevakaḥ

• Vyāpāre lābhavān sadā — always profitable in trade, business, commerce
• Vidyāhīno'pi medhāvī — though not well educated, intelligent and brilliant
• Sāhasī — very bold
• Parasevakaḥ — one who serves others

Profits in business

• One kāma trikoṇa lord in another kāma trikoṇa. The 3rd is the starting kāma trikoṇa: the seed of desire, the initiative to do things. The 11th is the fulfilment of all desires — final gain, profit, accomplishment.
• He has a lot of initiative, pursues it and succeeds. His business is very successful and gives great profits.
• Will he have a business at all? The teacher says very likely. On the recording the reason sounds like "8th lord is in 7th house"; that count does not fit the 3rd lord in the 11th from any house, so the reason is left unverified here. (From the 7th house of trade, the 3rd lord is the 9th lord placed in the 5th.)

"One Kama Trikona lord is in another Kama Trikona. Third is the starting Kama Trikona, which shows the seed of the desire, the initiative and drive to do things. And the eleventh is fulfilling all your desires."

Uneducated yet brilliant

• From the 4th house he is not well placed: the 12th lord in the 8th. He gives a break in education or something like it.
• From the 5th house of intelligence and judgment he is the 11th lord in the 7th — in a quadrant and aspecting the 5th. Excellent judgment and intelligence.
• The 4th is weak and the 5th strong from the point of view of this one planet. He is intelligent but not necessarily educated.
• Caveat: you also have to look at the 4th lord, the 5th lord, and who is in the 4th and the 5th. This is only what this one factor says.

Bold

• The 3rd lord of bravery is in the 9th from the 3rd.
• Any house lord in the 9th from its house fortifies that house. The 3rd is initiative, bravery, boldness.

Serves others

• Not for his livelihood. That would not fit a man just described as very successful in business. He has an attitude of service.
• A business magnate who goes round and serves people. At a big party he makes the arrangements. At a temple function he is a volunteer and does the voluntary work.
• The 6th is the house of service and the 10th the house of accomplishment in society. From the 10th house, the 3rd lord is the 6th lord placed in the 2nd.
• As 6th lord from the 10th he shows accomplishments of the nature of serving others. In the 2nd from the 10th he is the resource for the 10th house, for karma.
• The analysis is from the 10th house, not from lagna. So the service is not his living; it counts as his accomplishment in society.

"He serves others and it looks like an accomplishment that he is serving others, not as serving others to get your livelihood."

Verse 36 — 3rd Lord in the 12th House

vyaye sahajādhīśe kukārye vyayakṛj janaḥ / pitā tasya bhavet krūraḥ strībhir bhāgyodayas tathā

• Kukārye vyayakṛt — he spends a lot of money on bad work, evil things
• Pitā tasya bhavet krūraḥ — his father is cruel
• Strībhir bhāgyodayas tathā — and his fortune blooms through women

Spends on evil work

• The 12th house is expense. Planets in the 12th give expenses. Why on bad work and not good work?
• The 3rd is considered a malefic house. Dharma is seen from the 9th, and the 3rd is the 7th from the 9th: māraka not only of father but of dharma too.
• This gives a meaning of the 3rd house not touched in any earlier verse: the fall of dharma.
• The lord of that house in the 12th: he spends money on things that make dharma fall.

"Third is also the fall of dharma."

Father is cruel

• A student took the 9th house for father: the 7th lord from the 9th is in the 4th from the 9th. The teacher asked why that should show cruelty. Another student brought in A3; the teacher asked why it was needed.
• A student then took the 10th house for father, and the teacher accepted it: the 10th is the 7th from the 4th house of mother, the husband of the mother.
• From the 10th, the 3rd lord is the 6th lord placed in the 3rd.
• The 6th lord in the 3rd is not necessarily cruelty. It is an aggressive person, an achiever, someone who can be ruthless. The 6th lord is cold in nature and ruthless. The father's coldness and ruthlessness can be understood from that.

Fortune blooms through women

• The same words were used for the 3rd lord in the 9th. The teacher takes the meaning here to be different.
• Take the 9th house of fortune as lagna. The 3rd lord is the 7th lord, placed in the 4th. The 7th from the 9th is interacting with other people for one's fortune, to promote oneself.
• From lagna the same planet is in the 12th house of pleasure, sex and bed. From the 12th he also has argala on the 9th house.
• The planet of initiative, which is also the planet of interacting with others for fortune, is in the house of bed pleasures. This can be a person of loose character who sleeps with others to set up relationships that promote his fortune.
• Not necessarily fortune after marriage, as with the 3rd lord in the 9th.

"This may just be somebody of a loose character. He just uses his body for advancing his fortune, to advance himself."
