Naisargika Karakas & Pranapada Lagna

The fixed natural significators (Naisargika Karakas) for all 12 houses — and why they differ from Chara Karakas. Pranapada Lagna: the lagna of life force, separating the human from the animal kingdom. Applied to a famous astrologer's chart.

"The karaka of the 10th house per Parasara is Mercury — Mercury is the general karaka of career. But for a labor career, it is Saturn. For terrorism it is Ketu — Ketu does not have a head. So Rahu shows the brains of a terrorist organization and Ketu shows the headless foot soldiers."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

The Project Manager Analogy (Complete)

RoleJyotish EquivalentWhat It Shows
Project ManagerNaisargika KarakaUltimately accountable; makes the matter happen
Group ManagerLord of the houseRuns the group; planets in the house are at his mercy
Team membersPlanets in that houseDirectly involved in the project
Typist with permanent roleRasi Drishti planetsAlways have a role, irrespective of dashas; permanent but not necessarily crucial
Contractors with desireGraha Drishti planetsWant to play a role (positively or negatively); fructification depends on dasha
Conclusive decision-makerArgala planets (2H, 4H, 11H from the house)Decisive role; project incomplete without them

"Argala is like the chip layout guy — he does not understand the whole business, but still he has a conclusive role to play. He intervenes, and without him the project is not over."

— PVNR

Important on Graha Drishti: A malefic 6th lord with Graha Drishti on 7H desires to influence your marriage — negatively. It doesn't mean it will get you married; judge the nature (benefic or malefic) of the aspecting planet.

Pranapada Lagna: Human vs Animal

Pranapada Lagna (PP) = "foothold of prana" — the base on which your life-force stands

Rule to identify a human being: Moon must be in a trine (1H, 5H, 9H) or 7th house from Pranapada Lagna in the Navamsa chart.

Living BeingPlanet Required Near PP
HumanMoon in trine or 7th from PP
BirdSun in trine or 7th from PP
FishKetu in trine or 7th from PP
PigRahu in trine or 7th from PP
HorseVenus in trine or 7th from PP

Note: Moon in trine is a necessary condition, not sufficient. If Moon is weak, even with this condition, it may not be a human chart.

Sensitivity of Pranapada Lagna

"One minute I added to the birth time — PP changed by 5 degrees. That is almost 2 signs in Navamsa."

— PVNR

PP is extremely sensitive to:

  1. The birth time (changes by ~5° per minute)
  2. The definition of sunrise used

Three Definitions of Sunrise (in Jagannatha Hora software)

DefinitionDescriptionWho Uses It
1. Sun center on eastern horizonSun and Lagna exactly conjoinPVNR's preferred definition
2. Sun's upper limb on eastern horizonJust the top of the sun is visibleAnother common definition
3. Sun below horizon (diffraction)Rays are visible before sun risesPandit Sanjay Rath's definition

"The definition that will give you smooth results in my opinion is taking Sun's center exactly on the eastern horizon — Sun and Lagna conjunction. The diffraction-based definition is arbitrary because it depends on temperature, atmospheric pressure, and you can't even see it if there are clouds."

— PVNR

Example Chart: Anonymous Famous Astrologer

Famous Astrologer (Anonymous)
Oct 12, 1931 · 7:53 AM · Andhra Pradesh
Pranapada Lagna analysis + Chara Karaka hierarchy. Strong Mercury + Jupiter combination in D24 → scholarly astrologer of the highest calibre. Chart demonstrates AK placement in Navamsa for Ishta Devata derivation.
Time:

Data: October 12, 1931, 7:53:29 AM, IST, 81E12, 16N13 (Andhra Pradesh, India)

Identity kept anonymous; this is a famous Indian Vedic astrologer who was also a senior government official.

Spirituality Assessment (D1 Rashi Chart)

Moksha Trikonas: 4H (direction/gati), 8H (tapasya/sadhana), 12H (liberation)

  • Ketu in 12H (Moksha karaka in house of liberation) → spiritual
  • Mercury + Sun also in 12H with Ketu
  • Mercury rules 9H and 12H (dharma and moksha) → very important planet
  • D60 karma of Ketu: Sudha amsa (moonlight/nectar/purity) → pure spiritual karma from past lives
  • D60 karma of Mercury: Komala amsa (gentle, delicate) → follows dharma gently and with purity

"This is definitely somebody who is very spiritual. His spirituality is very advanced."

— PVNR

Arudha Lagna — Perceived Image

  • Jupiter in Arudha Lagna → learned, priestly, scholarly image
  • 3rd from AL: Mercury (malefic here — with Sun and Ketu, all malefics) → perceived as bold, forceful, takes initiative even to the point of hurting
  • 6th from AL: Saturn → cold and ruthless with enemies; makes opponents suffer slowly and painfully

"People who know this astrologer will not think he is a spiritual person. Lot of people will have the image that he is very aggressive, very pushy, quarrelsome. But as astrologers, we know that he is highly spiritual, very advanced."

— PVNR

Key lesson: Spirituality and perceived image can be completely opposite. Don't confuse the image (AL analysis) with the true inner nature (D20, D60, AK analysis).

Venus in Lagna — Bachelor Despite Venus

  • Venus in lagna → normally expect passion, romance, wealth, playboy tendencies
  • But this person (born 1931) is a bachelor for life, never married
  • D60 karma of Venus: Kulagraha amsa (breaking/destroying the family lineage)
  • This past-life karma of Venus → chose not to marry, stopped his lineage

"Even though Venus is in lagna, that Venus being in Kulagramha amsa shows that this person may choose to not marry."

— PVNR

Also confirmed by Navamsa:

  • Ketu in Navamsa Lagna → detachment is core dharma
  • 7th lord Venus in 8H from Navamsa lagna (Marana Karaka Sthana context) → bad for marriage
  • Moon in 7H (relationship house) eclipsed by Rahu
  • Rahu = Badhakesh (for Chara/movable lagna, 11H = Badhakasthana; Rahu rules 11H here)
  • Badhakesh in 7H eclipsing Moon → serious obstacle to relationships and happiness in partnerships

Badhakasthana Rules

Lagna TypeBadhakasthana
Chara (movable: Ar, Cn, Li, Cp)11th house
Sthira (fixed: Ta, Le, Sc, Aq)9th house
Dvi-svabhava (dual: Ge, Vi, Sg, Pi)7th house

Career in D10 (Dasamsa)

D10 Lagna: Taurus (Vrishabha)

10th house of D10 (Aquarius):

  • Rahu (in Kubera amsa) + Aquarius is also Saturn's sign
  • Aquarius has two lords: Rahu (alone in 10H) and Saturn (with Ketu in 4H)
  • Saturn is stronger (conjoined planet gives more weight)
  • Main 10th lord = Saturn; secondary 10th lord = Rahu

Rahu in 10H (Kubera amsa):

  • Kubera = wealth, money, treasure
  • Rahu = occult, research, foreign sources
  • → Money/work from occult research and foreign sources (visited USA, gave consultations)

Saturn in 4H with Ketu (Brahma amsa):

  • Brahma amsa = research — digging, digging, digging deeper
  • "Researchers keep digging, digging. They think that as they dig more and more, you understand more and more. Spiritualists believe in rising; scientists believe in digging."
  • Tapasvi Yoga (approximate): Saturn + Ketu together + Venus has 4H Argala (Sukha Argala) on them
    • Saturn = discipline, unemotional pursuit
    • Ketu = detachment, moksha attitude
    • Venus = passionate energy (rajas) needed for sustained sadhana
    • → This person worked with tremendous persistence toward his astrological research goals

Tapasvi Yoga Definition:

"Saturn gives discipline — you can cold-heartedly, unemotionally pursue something. Ketu gives detachment and Moksha attitude. Venus gives passionate energy. Without passionate energy you can't do any tapasya. Those 3 planets together, or with mutual influence, that is a Tapasvi Yoga."

— PVNR

2nd House of D10 (Career Resources):

  • Mars in Gemini + Mercury in Scorpio = Parivartana (sign exchange)
  • Mars acts like Mercury (Gemini lord in his house), Mercury acts like Mars
  • "Mars will give the results of Mercury" → Mercurian profession
  • Mercury is here benefic (with Jupiter+Venus in 7H — association determines)
  • → Resources from a Mercury-type career (accounting, communications, administration)

Parivartana Rule:

"If Mercury is benefic, Mars will act like that benefic Mercury. Mars will give results of Mercury. It is like I am living in your house and you are living in mine — we try to take care of it the way the other normally would."

Mars will also carry Mercury's amsa (e.g., Nirriti amsa for desire, Brahma amsa for research) — whichever Mercury occupies.

— PVNR

6th House of D10 (Service):

  • Moon in 6H → service-type career; bureaucratic
  • Moon in Indra amsa → very high-level bureaucrat/officer
  • Director General level in Indian government accounting/auditing department

7th House of D10 (Desire):

  • Jupiter + Venus in 7H, in Agni amsa
  • Agni = transformation (transforms raw things into usable things)
  • "He desires to not only study astrology but design something. He would go and take readings from a learned astrologer near Rajamundry, study those papers, and then design new dashas."
  • → Intellectual desire for occult knowledge and transformation/engineering of it
  • Mercury (via parivartana) in Nirriti amsa → desire to deviate from rishi-prokta (what the Maharshis taught)
    • This gentleman advocated 7 charakarakas instead of Parasara's 8
    • "That is the logic he would give. He has a desire to deviate from the rishi-prakta."

Career Summary (Artha Trikonas: 2H, 6H, 10H)

HouseWhat It ShowsResult
2HResources/starting pointMercurian profession (accounting) via parivartana
6HService and overcoming obstaclesHigh-level government bureaucrat (Moon in Indra amsa)
10HFinal achievement in societyAstrological research; occult/foreign work (Rahu+Saturn Tapasvi)

"10th house is not the only house of career. If a planet is in the 2nd house, it will promote the 10th house. See real charts — 2, 6, and 10, all 3 together show your karma. It is an oversimplification to look only at 10H."

— PVNR

Three steps of karma:

  • 2H = what you start with (resources, capital, skills)
  • 6H = walking the path, overcoming obstacles
  • 10H = what you finally achieved in society

6H vs 7H for Service vs Business:

"6th house shows overcoming obstacles. If you always have to overcome obstacles, it means somebody is giving you obstacles — there is a boss. So you are basically in a servant's position. 7th house is desire — if you have strong desires, you are likely to work for yourself (business). But this is only a thumb rule."

— PVNR

Rule from D10: If 6th lord is in 7th house → person should first be in service, then slowly branch into business. Don't advise starting a business from scratch.

Charakarakas Continuation

AK as the Jivatma's Weakness

"Why is your Atma separate from the Paramatma? Because it has certain weaknesses, an identity crisis. It doesn't know who it is. If it realizes who it is, it will be part of the Paramatma. Once it overcomes that weakness, it will merge back."

— PVNR
  • Sun = Vishwatma (the universal soul, Paramatma, complete potential)
  • AK planet = Jivatma (the individual soul, incomplete, carrying that planet's weakness)
  • The weakness shown by AK is what keeps the soul separate from Paramatma
  • 12 Adityas in 12 signs; planets draw energy from their sign's Aditya
  • Rahu, being retrograde, starts from the end of the sign → friendship with Aditya builds from 30° down

AK by Planet — The Weakness to Overcome

AK PlanetCore WeaknessTeaching from PVNR
SunToo much ego (ahamkara)Must let go of ego; acknowledge others
MoonToo compassionate; drawn too much into MayaMaya is not bad — it makes this world exist — but Moon people must not be lost in Maya
MarsToo aggressive; "don't care" attitudeMust curb aggression; develop care
MercuryToo wavering, too flexible; takes the color of whoever it is withNeeds firmness; must stop vacillating
JupiterPuts too much stress on purity; always preaching and teachingShould listen more; not everyone needs a sermon
VenusToo much rajas (passion); too rajasicMust leave that passion to achieve Moksha
SaturnToo cold, too detached from others' sufferingLike Yama Dharmaraja: "whatever happens, happens, who cares" — must develop emotion
RahuTwo extremes — saint or criminal (as Sanjayji taught)The shock absorber; can go either direction

Moon AK — Deeper Teaching

"Sun is Satya and Moon is Maya. Sun is Shiva and Moon is Parvati. Because of her, this whole world exists. So when I say Maya, don't think of it as bad. But people with Moon AK are so drawn into Maya that they think this Maya is real. They have to overcome being drawn into Maya too much."

— PVNR
  • Moon AK = mana (mind) completely controlling the Atma
  • Such people have a very kind, compassionate conscience
  • Their soul is guiding them toward kindness, but they may act aggressively outwardly
  • When they do something harmful, they feel deeply guilty afterward

Student example (Prashant, Moon AK + Rahu in 3rd from AL):

"I will always go with a drive. If anybody has done wrong to me, I want to fight. But whatever the result is, at the end I feel, oh no, I should not have done that."

"That is basically Atmakaraka Moon. When AK is strong, it's not a fleeting thought — it's a slightly tormenting feeling. Moon Atmakaraka will make you feel: oh man, why did I do that? I shouldn't have done it."

— PVNR

AK = Soul's Conscience

"The soul is present within you as your conscience. Sometimes your mind tells you to do something, but your conscience says 'No, maybe that's not the right thing.' Atmakaraka is king, but Moon (mind) is the prime minister who actually does everything. King is the ultimate boss but a helpless boss."

— PVNR

As an astrologer:

  • Find the person's AK
  • Understand what their soul/conscience wants
  • Guide them toward that path — because following AK's path leads to internal peace
  • Going against AK's path leads to internal turmoil (even if external success)

Atmakaraka Change in Life

If two planets are in the same degree (e.g., both at 24°), the one with higher minutes is AK, but at some point that planet is "removed" from life and the next karaka takes over:

"The principle is: if 2 planets are in the same degree, one is AK, one is AmK. At a point in time, AK is removed and AmK becomes AK. Then the AmK slot is filled by the corresponding Sthira Karaka. This leads to a big upheaval or transformation in life."

— PVNR
  • If the displaced Sthira Karaka is weak → can even show death of the corresponding family member
  • Example: Matru Karaka + Pitru Karaka in same degree → if Pitru Karaka is displaced and Sthira Pitru Karaka is weak → father may pass away; mother takes both roles
  • In charts with 4 planets in the same degree → queue of 4 changes; multiple life upheavals
