BPHS Ch.15 Verses 1–7 — 4th House: Home Happiness, Vehicles, Mother, Cattle & Multiple Karakas (Moon/Mercury/Venus/Mars/Ketu/Sun)
BPHS Ch.15 (Sukha Bhava Phaladhyayam — 4th house results). Verse 1: 4th lord in 4H OR lagna lord in 4H + benefic aspect = complete happiness from home. "Lagna lord in 4th = your very being placed in comfort." Verse 2: 4th lord in own/exalted sign OR own amsa (D4 Chaturthamsa or D9 Navamsha) = happiness from land, vehicles, house, and musical instruments (new 4H signification). D4 amsa placement shows which 4H signification flourishes. Verse 4: 4th lord + 10th lord conjunct in kendra/kona = palace-like house. Key insight: 10th house = 7th from 4th = visibility/extrovert dimension of the home. "A grand palace is visible — the 10th lord makes it seen by the world." 7th from any house = its visibility/desire dimension. Verse 5: 4th lord is natural benefic + aspected by functional benefics + Mercury in lagna = respected by relatives. Mercury = karaka for relatives (bandhu). Multiple karakas table: Moon (general happiness + mother); Mercury (learning + relatives); Venus (vehicles + conjugal bliss); Mars (land/property); Ketu (the house building itself); Sun (animals/cattle). Verse 6: 4H functional benefic + 4th lord exalted + Moon strong = mother long-lived (three pillars: house, lord, karaka). Verse 7: 4th lord in kendra + Venus in kendra + Mercury exalted = complete happiness from mother.

Chapter 15 in Santhanam. Only 9 of the chapter's verses were covered before time ran out.
Verse 1: 4th Lord or Lagna Lord in 4H + Benefic Aspect → Full Happiness from Home
— PVNR"Sukhe se sukha bhavaste, lagnese tadgate pi vā, shubha drushte cha dātasya, purnam gruha sukham vādet"
Conditions (either/or):
- 4th lord in the 4th house (OR)
- Lagna lord in the 4th house
- PLUS: that planet in the 4th house is aspected by benefic planets
→ Purnam gruha sukham = complete happiness from home/house
Why lagna lord in 4th?
— PVNR"Lagna is your body, your very existence. Lagna lord being in the 4th house of comfort can also give comforts — just like the 4th lord in 4th house."
Parashara continues to emphasize: aspect of benefics (shubha drishti) is always a desirable factor, mentioned in every chapter.
Verse 2: 4th Lord in Own/Exalted Sign or Own Amsa → Landed Property, Vehicles, Musical Instruments

- Swagehe = own sign; Swamsake = own amsa (D4 = Chaturthamsa, or D9 = Navamsha)
- Swotche = own exaltation sign (swa ucha = "his exaltation")
- Who? 4th lord

On "swamsake": Could be D9 (Navamsha) or D4 (Chaturthamsa — the divisional chart specifically for property/residence). Context: Chaturthamsa (D4) is used for seeing real estate, vehicles, house; Siddhamsa (D24) is used for education; you adapt based on which amsa the 4th lord is placed in.
Key principle: Which amsa the 4th lord is well-placed in tells you which 4th house signification flourishes. If 4th lord is well-placed in D24, it gives good education (not necessarily a big house).
PVNR's personal example: His 4th lord Jupiter (Virgo lagna) is well-placed in Pisces in his D24 (Siddhamsa), in a quadrant → indicates strong education.
Verse 4: 4th Lord + 10th Lord Together in Kendra/Kona → Palace-Like House

- Karma ajipa = 10th lord; Kruhashipa = 4th lord
- They are conjunct in a kendra or kona
→ Vichitra saudha prakar ir manditam = a grand mansion with beautiful walls and architecture
Why 10th lord matters for the 4th house?
Key teaching on house-from-house analysis:
— PVNR"If you take the 4th house as Lagna, the 10th house becomes the 7th house from the 4th. The 7th house is visibility, interaction with the world."
- The 10th house shows the visibility and extrovert dimension of the 4th house (the house of residence)
- 4th lord + 10th lord together = the "introvert" (what the house is) + "extrovert" (how it is seen by others) combined
- A grand palace is not just big (4H strong) — it is visible to everyone who walks by (7th from 4H = 10H = strong)
Extended teaching on 7th house from any house:
— PVNR"The Lagna is the normal introvert lagna. The 7th house is the extrovert aspect — how you interact with the world. The world judges you based on how you interact with the world. If strong influences on the 7th house, the person may be more extrovert."
For any house: 7th from that house = its visibility/desire dimension. This is why Jaimini uses both the 1st and 7th house as reference points when analyzing any matter.
Verse 5: 4th Lord is Natural Benefic + With Functional Benefics + Mercury in Lagna → Respected by Relatives

- Saumya = 4th lord is a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, unafflicted Mercury)
- Shubha graha yute ekshite = that planet is with or aspected by functional benefics (shubha)
- Seshijaye lagna samyukte = Mercury in the lagna (Seshi jaye = son of Moon = Mercury)
→ Person is respected and honored by relatives (bandhu puja)
Why Mercury in lagna? Mercury is the Karaka for relatives (Bandhu). His presence in the lagna empowers the overall personality with Mercury's relational, adaptive energy.
Multiple Karakas for 4th House Matters
A critical teaching: the 4th house has different karakas depending on which matter is being discussed:

How to apply: If someone has the 4th lord well-placed but Mercury afflicted, relatives may be problematic even though the house itself is good. If Moon is weak, mother may not be long-lived. If Venus is afflicted, vehicles may bring bad luck.
Verse 6: 4H with Functional Benefic + 4th Lord Exalted + Moon (Karaka) Strong → Mother Long-Lived

- Taji se = 4th house has a functional benefic
- Swotcharasike = 4th lord is in exaltation sign
- Karake balasamyukte = the Karaka (Moon) is strong
→ Madhur derghayu = mother will be long-lived
Three aspects being fortified simultaneously: the house, the house lord, and the karaka.
Verse 7: 4th Lord in Kendra + Venus in Kendra + Mercury in Exaltation → Complete Happiness from Mother
— PVNR"Sukhe she kendra bhavaste tatha kendra sthite bhruhu, shachi jaye swotcha rahisthe, mathu poornam sukham vadet"
- Sukhe she kendra bhavaste = 4th lord in a kendra
- Bhruhu = Venus (Bhrigu = Venus) in a kendra
- Shachi jaye swotcha rahisthe = Mercury in exaltation sign (Virgo)
→ Complete happiness from mother
Why Venus and Mercury here?
- Venus in kendra → strength relating to 4th house matters (karaka for vehicles, conjugal happiness)
- Mercury in exaltation → mother's relatives/learning = Mercury's domain well supported
Verse 8: Sun in 4H + Moon and Saturn in 9H + Mars in 11H → Profit from Cattle
— PVNR"Sukhe raviyute mande, chandray bhagyagate sati, lava sthana kato bhoomo, go mahishyadi lava krut"
- Sukhe raviyute = Sun (Ravi) in the 4th house
- Mande chandray bhagyagate sati = Saturn and Moon in 9th house (Bhagya)
- Lava sthana kato bhoomo = Mars (Bhooma) in the 11th house
→ Go mahishyadi lava = profit from cows, buffaloes, and similar cattle
Logic:
- Sun in 4H = animals as property (Sun = general karaka for all living beings/jivas)
- Saturn and Moon in 9H = fortune through Saturnine entities (hardworking, lowly creatures — cows and buffaloes work hard)
- Mars in 11H = gains from Martian matters (livestock, agriculture)
— PVNR"Cows and buffaloes are hardworking just like hardworking servants. They are Saturn-like. Their hard work is your fortune — you make a fortune out of their hard work."
Important clarification: 6th and 8th houses (one's own hard work) are NOT involved — this fortune comes from the hard work of others (animals/servants), not the native themselves.
Verse 9 (Partial): 4H in Mobile Sign + 4th Lord Badly Placed + Mars in 12H → Speech Problems
This verse had unclear Sanskrit and three possible interpretations debated. PVNR's best interpretation:
- 4th house is a mobile sign
- 4th lord in 6th house (dusthana)
- Mars in 12th house
→ Some problem with speech (mukata = dumbness, inability to speak)
Why 4th house relates to speech?
Key teaching on 3rd and 8th from any house:
— PVNR"3rd house is the house of vitality in anything. 8th house is the longevity/vulnerability of anything. If the 3rd house from any entity is afflicted, that entity lacks vitality."
Application to speech:
- 2nd house = speech (primary house)
- 4th house = 3rd from 2nd = vitality of speech
- 9th house = 8th from 2nd = longevity/vulnerability of speech
If the 3rd from the 2nd house (= 4th house) is weak or in a mobile sign, speech lacks stability/vitality.
— PVNR"If the 4th house (3rd from 2nd) is in a mobile sign, the vitality of speech is shaky. Mobile signs have energy but not focused energy. Fixed signs show solidity and stability."
Generalizing: This principle applies to any house:
- 3rd from house X = vitality of X's matters
- 8th from house X = longevity/vulnerability of X's matters
- Fixed sign = solid, stable; Mobile sign = shaky; Dual = intermediate
PVNR's caveat: The 4th house is a secondary factor for speech (the primary factor is the 2nd house). Don't ignore the primary factor when a secondary factor is weak. Both must be analyzed together.
