Ashtakavarga Bala vs Vimsopaka Bala — Correct Usage & D60 Verification

Ashtakavarga Bala: each planet's strength based on how many of the 8 reference points (7 planets + lagna) cast a +1 vote to its position. Vimsopaka Bala: strength based on the planet's dignity across all 16 divisional charts (Shodasha Vargas). The fundamental difference: AV Bala = external support from all planetary influences; Vimsopaka = inherent dignity across multiple dimensions of life. D60 Shashtiamsha verification: how to cross-check D60 results against known life experiences to validate the chart's accuracy.

"Ashtakavarga Bala measures how much support a planet gets from others. Vimsopaka Bala measures the planet's own inherent dignity across all dimensions of life."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Ashtakavarga Bala — Cooperation from Other Planets

What it shows: How much cooperation a planet receives from other planets in achieving its agenda.

Explanation: Each planet has a specific agenda (what results it wants to give). In order to implement that agenda, it needs cooperation from other planets. Ashtakavarga Bala measures that cooperation level.

  • High AV Bala: The planet gets cooperation from many planets → can give results in the dashas/antardashas of many different planets who are cooperating with it. Results are given more easily and in varied circumstances.

  • Low AV Bala: The planet is largely a "loner" — others don't cooperate with its agenda → must give results primarily in its own dasha, and even then with difficulty.

AV Bala changes by varga: A planet may have high cooperation in the matter of education (D-24) but low cooperation in the matter of career (D-10). The same planet can be strong in one domain and lonely in another.

Distinct from Shadbala: AV Bala = cooperation from others; Shadbala = delivery strength among yoga partners.

Vimsopaka Bala — The Most Important Strength

According to Parashara, Vimsopaka Bala is the most important bala for judging a planet's overall strength.

Versions (which divisional charts to use):

  • Dasavarga (10 charts): For human charts — standard use
  • Shodasavarga (16 charts): For royal/king charts
  • Saptavarga (7 charts): For Muhurta charts
  • Shadavarga (6 charts): For Prasna charts

What it shows: Overall strength of a planet across all important areas of life. How well-disposed is the planet towards the native? Will it give good results or bad results?

Strong vs. Good — a critical distinction:

CombinationResult
Good planet (benefic for chart) + Strong VimsopakaGood results given freely and abundantly
Good planet + Weak VimsopakaGood results given only moderately
Bad planet + Weak VimsopakaBad results given moderately (manageable)
Bad planet + Strong VimsopakaVery bad results given forcefully
Bad planet + Strong + AfflictedTerrible — like someone who wants to ruin you, has the power, AND is provoked

The full picture requires combining all factors:

  1. Ownership and occupation (good/bad planet for the chart?)
  2. Yogas and associations
  3. Vimsopaka Bala (overall strength — degree of results)
  4. Shadbala (delivery capacity among yoga partners)
  5. Ashtakavarga Bala (cooperation from others)
  6. Afflictions and provocations

"You can't make judgments just based on one thing. If you include all the factors, you get closer and closer to perfection in terms of the degree and nature of the result."

— PVNR

Example Chart: Oct 11, 1980, 5:22 PM, Detroit, Michigan

Chart details: 83°02'45"W, 42°19'53"N (Detroit)
Person: "Saloni" — 24-year-old Indian woman, extremely devoted, wants to renounce the world and become a saint/sanyasin. Nobody in her family has gone this direction. Question: Is this genuine, or will she reverse course?

Rasi Chart Analysis

First impressions:

  • Ketu in 12H: Strong desire for moksha, renunciation; not attached to material world
  • Atmakaraka (AK) = Moon
  • Lagna lord Saturn in 8H with Sun and Jupiter = interest in mysticism and occult; with two sattvic planets (Sun and Jupiter), the mysticism is sattvic and traditional — not tantric or tamsic

Mars — standing out strongly:

  • Mars in own sign (Aries or Scorpio) in a Kendra = Ruchaka/Rishika Yoga
  • Ruchaka Yoga = the person has extraordinary willpower and determination; once they decide something, nobody can stop them
  • Applies equally whether the path is military (army, coup) or spiritual (sanyasa) — whatever she wants to do, she will do it with full force

Dhimanta Yoga:

  • 5L Mercury + 6L Moon together in a house aspecting Lagna
  • Any link between 5H, 6H, and Lagna = Dhimanta Yoga
  • The person is intelligent AND uses that intelligence productively to overcome obstacles
  • Confirmed: she is not a dumb or aimless person choosing spirituality out of escapism; this is a deeply thoughtful choice

From Arudha Lagna:

  • 3H from AL: no planets = doesn't readily take initiative; passive/selective
  • 6H from AL: 3 planets = once she makes a decision, she will see it through completely; strong "completion energy"
  • World sees her as: someone who doesn't want to do a lot, but when she acts, she finishes decisively

No strong Pravrajya Yoga (Parashara's sanyasa combinations not triggered by software), but the overall picture from all chart factors strongly suggests a spiritual orientation.

D-20 (Vimsamsa) — Spiritual Environment

D-20 Lagna: Libra (confirmed by Narayana Dasha matching events)

IndicatorPlacementMeaning
Jupiter in Lagna (3L+6L of D-20)LagnaSpiritual understanding comes easily; no struggle to know the inner self; 3L+6L in lagna = initiative AND ability to overcome spiritual obstacles come naturally
LL Venus debilitated in 12H12HExcellent for spirituality — LL giving up material concerns; 12H = moksha, renunciation
Mercury (8L of D-1) in 8H of D-208H8L of Rasi = controlling planet for D-20; in 8H = deep tapasya, intense sadhana
8H+12H Parivartana (Mercury + 12L Venus)ExchangeVipritha Raja Yoga in D-20: the one who gives tapasya is in the moksha house, and the moksha indicator is in the tapasya house = mutual interest = very auspicious
Mercury+Venus = friendsExchange works freely, not reluctantly
AK Moon: Rahu+Ketu in 12H from AK12H from AKInterest in moksha from the soul level; soul oriented toward liberation

Narayana Dasha in D-20 (using 8L of Rasi as Narayana):

  • Currently (from Oct 2004): Aquarius Dasha
    • From Lagna: 5H of devotion, sadhana, mantra; Rahu+Ketu in 10H from here = link with transcendence nodes → very conducive to intense spiritual pursuit
    • From AK: 7H = soul has desires, some restlessness; soul is saying "I want to grow spiritually"
  • From 2011: Virgo Dasha (LL Venus's house) = 12H from lagna = moksha sthana; very significant spiritual dasha

Key rule: When Narayana Dasha is in 7H from AK, the soul has desires and is restless. When in 12H from AK, the soul is contented. When in 1H from AK, the soul is already doing what it came to do.

Concept — Narayana Dasha house from Atmakaraka:

House from AK (Narayana Dasha)Soul State
1HSoul shining; doing exactly what it came to do
4HHappy with direction; clear purpose; contentment
7HSoul has desires; restless; "I want more of this"
8HWorking hard in tapasya/sadhana; engaged in its real work
12HComplete contentment; no more desires in this area; moksha
3H, 11HDesire active; restlessness from desires (Kama trikona)

D-10 (Dasamsa) — Professional/Karmic Environment

Question: What kind of work is she destined to do?

Important concept — Stronger Lord Rule (when 2 lords exist):

"When one of the two planets owning a house is in its own house, the other planet is considered the stronger lord of that house."

— PVNR

Applied here: Aquarius has two rulers (Saturn + Rahu in BPHS system). Rahu is in his Moolatrikona in Aquarius in the Rasi. But for D-10 analysis, we identify which is stronger IN D-10 itself.

Similarly for 10H of Rasi: Capricorn and Aquarius (if Capricorn is 10H), 10L = Saturn; but also Ketu can represent 10H if Scorpio = 10H. In her chart: Ketu is the stronger 10L (Mars is in own sign so Ketu — the other 10L — takes over as the stronger representative).

  • 10L Ketu in Rasi 12H: The karma of the person involves the 12th house = renunciation, giving up, moksha-oriented work
  • Ketu in D-10 10H: Working in the domain of Mercury and Ketu; in Yama amsha of D-10 = very disciplined, rule-following ascetic

D-10 Yogas:

  • Gajakesari Yoga (Jupiter+Moon) = well-known, reasonably famous person
  • Lakshmi Yoga (1L+9L conjunction) = intelligence connected to dharma; happening in 12H of D-10 = dharma in the domain of moksha
  • 12H getting enormous focus = professional path is moksha-oriented

Mercury+Mars Parivartana in D-10:

  • Once exchange is triggered: Mars acts as if in 10H; Ketu joins effectively
  • Mars is in Ishana amsha of D-10 = procedures, religious worship
  • Result: she may be in charge of worship, rituals, temple puja at an ashram

Conclusion from D-1 + D-20 + D-10: All three charts independently and consistently point to spiritual/ascetic path. This is not confusion — it is genuine.

D-60 — Brief Verification

D-60 lagna is Leo or Virgo (41 seconds = Leo; +29 seconds later = Virgo):

If Leo (AL in Scorpio): Sun+Mars in AL = dominant, fiery, politically powerful person in past life — less consistent with current spiritual orientation

If Virgo (AL in Cancer): 8H (Aquarius) has Saturn+Mercury = deep mysticism; 5H has Sun+Mars+Ketu = fiery, highly religious devotion; 9H has Jupiter (9L) = very dharmic. This is more consistent with the current life's spiritual pull.

Moola Dasha:

  • Jupiter in Saumya amsha = very tender, flowery, fragrant karma from past life — all compassion and goodness
  • Jupiter in 7H from current Lagna in D-60 = strong desire relating to Piscean/Jupiterian matters (spiritual knowledge, ashrams, etc.)

Verification principle: When D-60 and Moola Dasha are roughly consistent with what we know about the person's life (strong spiritual desires, intense devotion since Oct 2004), it confirms the D-60 rectification.

Navamsa — Marriage Analysis

Is marriage likely at all?

  • 7H of Navamsa: Sun+Mars+Venus all strong here = marriage karaka (Venus) + strong planets = marriage is possible
  • But those dashas (Sun, Mars, Venus) are not running now
  • Sataabhidika Dasha (84-year equal dasha) — using because 10L in 10H makes it vargottama, the more appropriate nakshatra dasha here
  • Currently: Jupiter Dasha + Saturn Antardasha = 8H yoga of Jupiter+Saturn giving results = interest in Vedic/occult knowledge, not marriage

When marriage possible:

  • Sun Antardasha within Jupiter period (Oct 2010): some chance
  • Venus period (later): strongest indicator; Venus in 7H of both Rasi and Navamsa; Venus = UL lord in both charts

Upada (UL) analysis:

  • UL in Taurus = marriage traditionally difficult to come for this person (takes effort, may be delayed)
  • UL lord Mercury: well placed; 2L from UL also well placed
  • Overall: marriage will come, but not easily, not soon

PVNR's conclusion:

"I am not afraid that she will not have children, she will not have, she will not get married. My feeling is, after some initial growth, spiritual growth, she will realize that she needs to get married. She will go to the Brahmasthashram and get married, get children — but she will find a husband who respects her interest in spirituality."

— PVNR

Predicted: not in the next 5 years (i.e., before 2010); likely after that.

Saptamsa — Children Analysis

Rules for D-7:

  • For women: controlling planet = 9L of D-7
  • For men: controlling planet = 5L of D-7 (or equivalently: 5L of Rasi placed in D-7)

5L of Rasi (Mercury) in D-7: Mercury in a quadrant in a friendly sign = auspicious for children

Jupiter (children karaka) in D-7: 11H in own sign (Sagittarius) = quite strong

9L of D-7 (Taurus rising D-7, 9L = Saturn): Saturn in Lagna of D-7 = slight blemish (Marana Karaka Sthana for Saturn in 1H) but in friendly sign; overall acceptable

First child (lord of 1st completed sign after lagna = Capricorn lord = Saturn):

  • Saturn in Taurus = hardworking, practical child
  • Likely a girl (even sign = Taurus)

Second child: Must cross over Ketu (next sign after Capricorn) = Ketu blocks = second child very unlikely

Conclusion: One child, likely a girl. Marriage and children will come later after initial spiritual phase.

Spouse Analysis (7L Graha Arudha)

Material image of spouse (L7 Graha Arudha):

  • 7L = Venus (assuming Capricorn lagna?)

Actually from the transcript: "L7 is in Taurus" — so using Taurus as lagna for the spouse's material image:

  • Exalted Moon in lagna = seen as very compassionate, kind, easygoing, practical person
  • 9H (from Taurus) has Jupiter+Rahu = Guru-Chandal Yoga = religious but in a practical/unconventional way; believes in God but more practically
  • Mercury in 12H = 5L in 12H = 5L is 8H from 5H = occult scholarship; very learned person in occult/hidden knowledge
  • Overall material image: very successful, kind, learned, god-fearing but practical person; not seen as a moksha-seeker

True nature of spouse (7L = his actual intelligence):

  • Mars+Sun+Venus in lagna (from 7L reference) = very fiery, aggressive, authoritative doer; whatever he wants, he does it
  • Ketu in 12H = actually interested in moksha; that is why he is attracted to her and the spiritual path
  • Saturn in 8H = parivartana with Jupiter; deep interest in occult
  • World doesn't see him as very spiritual, but in reality he IS interested in moksha

Conclusion on relationship: She will likely find someone through the ashram (a visitor or fellow traveler) who is very successful materially but quietly interested in spirituality. They are a complementary match.
