Planets in Swamsa (Navamsa Lagna) — Jaimini's Statements

Swamsa. Jaimini uses the word for the Navamsa Lagna (Lagnamsa) and also for the sign the Atmakaraka occupies in Navamsa (Karakamsa). Here, unless explicitly stated otherwise, take it as the Navamsa Lagna.

The teacher's notes

• Sun. Government and social service are the Sun's domain. When this is the striking feature of a person, the Sun's influence is on the Navamsa Lagna.
• Full Moon and Venus. "Full" means a strong Moon — not near Amavasya, not afflicted. Moon with Venus connected to the Navamsa Lagna is seen in the charts of the wealthy: Princess Diana, J.R.D. Tata.
  • Educationist = one who establishes an institution, who teaches. The Moon is the mother, the first teacher. "Don't underestimate Moon."
  • In the Dasamsa, a teacher with the Moon's influence is likely to teach children — toddlers up to the 10th grade, before higher education.
• Mercury is a Vaishya, a businessman by nature. He also signifies lawyers. Three kinds: one who knows the law — Jupiter; one who argues and prosecutes — Mars; one who talks analytically and sees both sides, prosecution and defence — Mercury.
  • Mercury debates this side and that side and never reaches a conclusion. Mars says "I will hit you" and hits. That is why Mars and Mercury do not get along.
• Jupiter. Such people pick up whatever they take on. "Jack of all, master in one" — a later stanza says Jupiter in Swamsa or its 5th makes one read many subjects and specialise in one.
• Venus is semen, retas, ojas shakti — the power of rejuvenation. Shukracharya held the Sanjivani mantra that revives the dead. Hence die-hard fighters who never surrender.
• Saturn. Long suffering is the negative side, hard work the positive. There is no substitute for hard work, so Saturn gives success in any line. The teacher's example: a woman with little common sense who conquers any task by perseverance alone — "that is sadhana, that is abhyasa, that is Saturn."
  • Saturn gives patience, tolerance and focus. Concentration comes from Saturn because he is sthira, slow-moving; Moon and Mercury are chanchala.
  • A student added that Saturn forces karma to be burnt faster. The teacher agreed: Saturn makes you experience, and that is how you learn. Hence the suffering.
  • Vargottama Saturn gives the same nature. If a person is plainly of this type and Saturn is neither in the Navamsa Lagna nor in its trines, a vargottama Saturn explains it.
• Rahu is a serpent: the ability to handle danger and poison.
• Ketu — elephants, because Ketu is Ganapati. Thief, swindler and dacoit are what an afflicted Rahu and an afflicted Ketu share.

"Having the blessings of Shani Dev is one of the greatest blessings. You may be the smartest guy on earth, but you won't reach anywhere if you don't work towards it."

Rahu is import, Ketu is export

• Rahu and Ketu are not the norm; they stand apart from the luminaries and the five planets.
• Rahu = import: outside influence coming in. A neighbouring country's spies coming in are Rahu.
• Ketu = export: inside influence going out. Our own spies going out are Ketu. An exporter of knowledge is Ketu too.
• Rahu gives the ability to break barriers — a researcher who goes past the rules and norms of society.
• Example: a doctor whose Siddhamsa (D-24) has the Moon with Rahu and Ketu. The Moon is Aushadhapati, lord of medicine (a surgeon would be Mars — cutting). He does research at the frontier — stem-cell work — on things never tested before.

Order of reading

1. Planets placed in the Navamsa Lagna
2. Planets in trines to it — trines are very important in Navamsa
3. Planets aspecting it — rasi drishti counts
4. The lord of the Navamsa Lagna is also seen
5. Kartari — sometimes the influence is not in the lagna, the trines or by aspect at all, but by planets hemming the lagna on both sides; then both are felt

Lagna, 5th and 9th are all trines but mean different things. The teacher defers the distinction to a later class.

The example chart read by Swamsa

The child's chart from the previous section, taking the Navamsa as correct:

• Navamsa Lagna is Taurus. No planet in it.
• Venus (Libra) and Saturn (Cancer) aspect it by rasi drishti.
• Venus is also the Navamsa Lagna lord, so Venus is reinforced.
• Venus and Saturn will show in the personality. Trines come in later.

Navamsa as Past-Life Blessing

Why Navamsa and not Dasamsa?

• A man may be a wonderful singer, or a pandit trained by his parents, and work as a software engineer for his livelihood.
• If the Dasamsa shows singing and the Navamsa confirms the ability, call him a singer. If the Dasamsa shows it without the Navamsa, he is only someone doing it, not someone good at it.
• The Navamsa is the bank balance. It has to be there first.

Why the Navamsa shows blessings

• Nobody becomes good at something overnight. You become good only by doing it for a long time — sadhana, hard work.
• A student picks up astrology easily because he has done it before. The interest of a past life surfaces. (The teacher, at 16 or 17, hid B.V. Raman's book inside his engineering textbook.)
• The Navamsa is the Dharmamsa.
• Mahabharata. After their reign the Pandavas and Draupadi walked to the Himalayas to ascend from Meru. One by one they fell — one proud of his looks, Sahadeva of his astrology, Bhima of his strength. Only Yudhishthira, the Dharmaraja, arrived, with a dog. He would not enter without the dog; the dog was Yama Dharmaraja in disguise.
• The lesson: only dharma is carried to the next life.

"It is only the dharma, whatever dharma you followed, that gets carried over to the next life and comes as a blessing in the Navamsa. That's why you are good at a particular thing, or not good at a particular thing."

9th house and 5th house

• 9th house = the blessing; the good karma done in the past.
• 5th house = the result of that karma — the credit that remains and can be used. That is why the 5th is the future.
• "If you have not done any good things, then you won't have too much reserve to bank on."

Where this material is found

Very rarely do the other classical books give all of this in one place or explain it so clearly. Read the stanzas slowly and apply them to charts.

Navamsa Rectification Using Swamsa

• On opening a chart, first check that the lagna is right. Then the Navamsa Lagna has to be correct.
• A student suggested marriage as the test. The teacher: true, but the first thing is the person's character.
• Do not trust a stated birth time. "My grandmother had a watch in her hand." "My mother guarantees it" — she was in labour.

Matching planet to character

• Mars — hot-headed, quick to anger. A student who called himself hot-headed has Virgo Navamsa Lagna with Mars in Capricorn: in a trine, and vargottama.
• Mercury — always talking about business, set on starting one.
• Moon — an affectionate, motherly woman who takes care of everybody.
• Saturn — hard-working, never gives up.

The planet can be in the Navamsa Lagna, in its trines, or aspecting it. Sometimes it is none of these and works through a Kartari.

The stranger

A friend of a friend, unknown to the teacher, insisted his birth time was accurate. The teacher saw Mars very strong in the Navamsa and asked one question: "Are you a hot-headed person?" Reply: "You are right. Nobody knows this, but I am a very hot-headed guy."
