BPHS Ch.21 — 10th House Verses 14–21: Great Deeds, Fame (Moon in 10th + Artha Trikona), Handicapped Work (7th Malefic Blocks Partnerships)
BPHS Ch.21 (Karma Bhava) verses 14–21. v14: 10L in kendra/trikona + exalted + Jupiter = great deeds. v15: 10L in lagna + LL in lagna + Moon in kendra/trikona = deeply motivated, famous; AL=10H, A10=lagna = exchange between image and work. v16: Saturn + debilitated planet in 10H + malefic in D10 = career suffering; "karma amsa" = Dasamsa; three interpretations (Santhanam=navamsa; cusp method; Dasamsa itself). v17: 10L in 8H + 8L in 10H (exchange) + functional malefic = bad deeds OR great career struggle; A10 in 6H = work beset with enemies. v18: 10L debilitated + malefic in 10H + malefic in 7H = handicapped in work. Key: 7H shows partnerships — malefic there = no collaborators, cannot accomplish big things even with strong 10H; three simultaneous handicaps. v19: Moon in 10H + 10L in Artha Trikona (2-6-10) + LL in kendra = famous. Moon in 10H = link to masses; Artha Trikonas = houses of resources-effort-accomplishment; 10L in any two Artha houses = tangible results. v20: 11L in 10H + 10L strong + Jupiter aspecting = good fame; A11 falls in 9H (any arudha in 9H is greatly blessed). v21: 10L in 9H + LL in 10H + Moon in 5H = very famous; AL=4H (quadrant = auspicious); A10 in trine from AL = tangible work promotes image. Closing verse: "From the relationship between lagna and 10th lord, infer the rest — lagna is yourself, 10th is your work."

BPHS Chapter 21 — Karma Bhava Phaladhyayam (10th House) Concluded
(Lesson had covered verses 1–13 previously; resuming from verse 14)
Verse 14: Great Deeds — All Conditions Strong
Combination: 10th lord in Kendra or Trikona + exalted + conjunct or aspected by Jupiter
Result: Person does great deeds; becomes a doer of big things.
Why: "Jupiter's association is very auspicious; being exalted is good; being in Kendra or Trikona is good. All three together bless the 10th house completely."
Verse 15: Deeply Motivated + Famous Doer
Combination: 10th lord in Lagna + conjoined with Lagna lord + Moon in Kendra or Trikona
Result: Person is deeply involved in good deeds, highly motivated, and famous.
Why:
- Lagna lord + 10th lord in Lagna = Raj Yoga: "Intelligence (LL) and work accomplished (10th lord) have a strong link → person is deeply invested in what they do"
- Moon in Kendra/Trikona = strong mental state; "If Moon is in a dusthana in this combination, the mind is wavering and the person can't stay deeply committed. Here Moon is strong → great mental strength applied to work"
Arudha analysis:
- AL (Arudha Lagna) falls in 10th house (LL in 10th → AL 10 houses away = 7th... wait: if LL is in 10th, AL is 10th from 10th = 7th, or use reflection rule: 10→ 19→ mod 12 = 7)
- Actually: LL in lagna → lagna lord in 10th: count 10 from lagna = 10th; count 10 from 10th = 7th → wait the formula is: AL = 2nd × position from lagna. If LL in 10th, count 10 from 10th = 7th. No—PVNR states: "AL is in 10th house" and "A10 is in lagna" in this combination.
- Per PVNR in transcript: With LL + 10th lord in Lagna → AL = 10th house; A10 = Lagna → exchange between AL and A10
- AL in 10th = person's image is strongly linked to their work/karma
- A10 in Lagna = tangible work of the person is in the strongest position (lagna is most powerful)
- "Arudhas in Kendras or Trines from Lagna are greatly blessed"
Verse 16: Work Suffers — Saturn + Debilitated Planet + Afflicted D10
Combination: Saturn in 10th house + debilitated planet in 10th + malefic in 10th house of Dasamsa (or Navamsa)
Result: Person suffers in work; either jobless or unable to accomplish anything of significance.
Three interpretations of "karma amsa papa samyukte":

PVNR's conclusion: Most likely interpretation = Saturn afflicted in Rasi AND Saturn afflicted in D10/D9 → combined bad outcome for career.
Verse 17: Bad Deeds / Career Struggle — 8th-10th Exchange with Malefic
Combination: 10th lord in 8th + 8th lord in 10th (exchange) + at least one of them conjunct a functional malefic
Result: Person does bad deeds OR struggles greatly in work.
Arudha analysis:
- 10th lord in 8th → A10 falls in 6th house (count 10 from 8th = 6th... formula: 8 + (8-10 mod 12) → reflection: 10+10-8=12 → 12th? Let PVNR's analysis guide: he says A10 is in 6th house)
- A10 in 6th (dusthana) = the person's tangible work is in a struggling position; lots of enemies
- But: If AL placement is good (planets well-placed from AL), the person's image may still look fine to the world even while the work itself is troubled
— PVNR"It could even mean the person does bad karma. 'Dushkarma' literally means bad karma, but it can also mean bad luck in karma — struggling a lot on account of work."
Verse 18: Handicapped Work — Debilitated 10th Lord + Malefics in 10th + 7th
Combination: 10th lord debilitated + malefic in 10th house + malefic in 7th house
Result: Person is handicapped in work; unable to accomplish much.
Why 7th house matters for work:
— PVNR"In order to accomplish anything considerable, you typically have to work with others, deal with others. If 7th house is afflicted, you are alone — you can't form partnerships for work. And on top of it, 10th lord is debilitated — intelligence applied to work is weak. All three together = you are alone AND unable to do things AND your work-intelligence is in bad shape."
Three-part analysis:
- 10th lord debilitated = intellectual application to work is compromised
- Malefic in 10th = direct affliction of work house
- Malefic in 7th = no partners, collaborators, or good dealings with others
Verse 19: Fame — Moon in 10th + 10th Lord in Artha Trikona + LL in Kendra
Combination: Moon in 10th house + 10th lord in Artha Trikona (2nd, 6th, or 10th from Lagna or Moon) + Lagna lord in Kendra
Result: Person is well-known and famous.
Why:
- Moon in 10th: "Moon symbolizes society. Moon in 10th = link between person and many people. Famous among the masses."
- 10th lord in Artha Trikona: Artha Trikonas (2-6-10) = houses of resources, effort, and accomplishment. A connection between two Artha Trikonas = person actually gets things done and is recognized for them.
- "Artha Trikonas are the houses that show your work, the resources you have, how you put resources to use, and what you accomplish."
- LL in Kendra: Intelligence directed toward effort (Kendra = house of action)
Verse 20: Good Fame — 11th Lord in 10th + Strong 10th Lord + Jupiter
Combination: 11th lord in 10th house + 10th lord strong + 10th lord aspected by Jupiter
Result: Person attains good fame (not notoriety; specifically positive reputation).
Why:
- 11th lord in 10th: "His agenda is fulfillment of desires; in the house of work, he must give fulfillment of desire through work"
- A11 (when 11th lord is in 10th): 11 + (11-10) = 12th from 10th = 9th house → A11 falls in 9th → "Any arudha in the 9th house is greatly blessed; the person accomplishes his desires"
- 10th lord strong + Jupiter aspecting = further blessing of work capacity
Verse 21: Very Famous — 10th Lord in 9th + LL in 10th + Moon in 5th
Combination: 10th lord in 9th house + Lagna lord in 10th house + Moon in 5th house
Result: Person becomes very famous.
Why:
- 10th lord in 9th = 10th lord in trine; in trine from both Lagna AND Moon (9th from lagna, 5th from Moon when Moon is in 5th) → gives fruits of previous good karmas
- LL in 10th = intelligence applied to work; also → AL = 4th house (quadrant) → "AL in a quadrant is auspicious"
- A10 placement: 10 + (10-9) = 11th from 9th = 7th... but PVNR says A10 is in trine from AL (5th from AL if AL is in 4th) → "the tangible work of the person has contributed toward the fame of the image"
Key principle on Arudhas from AL:
— PVNR"The placement of Arudhas from Arudha Lagna is perhaps more important than placement from Lagna itself. If any Arudha is in a trine from Arudha Lagna, it is working in harmony with the image of the person, blessing it. If an Arudha is in the 8th from AL, the tangible thing it represents is causing upheaval in the person's image — sudden rises or falls."
Closing Verse of Chapter 21
— PVNR"Thus I have given the results of the 10th house in brief, O great Brahmin. From the relationship between Lagna and the 10th lord, you can infer the rest by yourself."
PVNR commentary: "Lagna is yourself. 10th is your work. The link between them is the most important factor for understanding a person's karma."
