BPHS Ch.21 — 10th House Verses 14–21: Great Deeds, Fame (Moon in 10th + Artha Trikona), Handicapped Work (7th Malefic Blocks Partnerships)

BPHS Chapter 21 — Karma Bhava Phaladhyaya (10th House) Concluded

(Verses 1–13 were covered earlier; the class resumes at verse 14, in Santhanam's numbering.)

Verse 14: Great Deeds — 10th Lord Exalted in Kendra/Trikona with Jupiter

Combination: 10th lord in a kendra or trikona + in his exaltation sign + conjoined or aspected by Jupiter

Result: Sa-karma-sahito bhavet — the person has many karmas, i.e. does big deeds.

Why: Being in a quadrant or trine is good. Being exalted is good. Jupiter, a natural benefic, associating is very auspicious. All of them together bless the 10th house.

Verse 15: Deeply Involved in Good Deeds — 10th Lord and Lagna Lord in Lagna

Combination: 10th lord in lagna + conjoined with lagna lord + Moon in a kendra or trikona

Result: Sat-karma-nirata — deeply involved in good deeds. He does good deeds and is also attached to them, motivated about them. Very likely famous too.

Why:

• The 10th lord's agenda is the karma the person does. In a quadrant or trine he is auspicious for karma.
• With the lagna lord it is a Raja Yoga. Lagna lord shows your intelligence; 10th lord shows the work accomplished. Their conjunction in lagna is a strong link between intelligence and work — this is what makes the person so interested in what he does.
• Moon is the mental state. "It is not necessarily important, but it shows the mental state." If Moon were in a marana karaka sthana, or in the 8th, the mind is unstable and wavering, and such a person is unlikely to be deeply involved in his work, whatever lagna lord and 10th lord show. Here Moon is strong in a quadrant or trine: great mental strength, and the intellect deeply involved in the work.

Arudha analysis:

• Lagna lord in lagna → AL falls in the 10th house (an arudha cannot fall in its own house; take the 10th from it).
• 10th lord in lagna is in the 4th from the 10th. The 4th from lagna is the 7th from the 10th, so again take the 10th from it → A10 (Rajya Pada) falls in lagna.
• So AL and A10 exchange places.
• AL in the 10th: the image of the person has to do with his work.
• A10 in lagna: "Any arudhas which fall in quadrants or trines from lagna are blessed." Moreover A10 is occupied by two planets, one of them the lord of the sign. A10 is strong, so the person does big things.

Student's question — is this a Mahapurusha Yoga?

• It may be, but not necessarily. With Cancer lagna (Moon and Mars in lagna) or Leo lagna (Sun and Venus in lagna) it is not; Sun and Moon give no Mahapurusha Yoga. For other signs it could be.
• Rahu and Ketu are possible too: Aquarius lagna with Rahu in it also counts as lagna lord in lagna.

Student's example — the yoga in an indirect way (no birth data given in class):

• Cancer lagna. Mars (10th lord) in lagna, debilitated. Venus (11th lord) in lagna. Moon (lagna lord) in Taurus, the 11th. So lagna lord and 11th lord are in parivartana. Jupiter in Gemini, the 12th.
• As placed, the verse is not met: lagna lord is not in lagna, and Moon in the 11th is not in a quadrant or trine.
• Take the parivartana into account: Venus acts as though he is Moon, and Moon acts as though he is in Cancer. Then every condition of the verse is present. "You have this yoga in an indirect way. If the parivartana can be triggered very strongly, you get the result of the yoga."
• Against it: Mars is weak in debility, and Venus with Mars is not a great combination. If the exchange works and Moon acts as though in Cancer, Mars becomes strong. Jupiter in the 12th gives no neecha bhanga. Lagna holds another malefic as well, which makes it worse.
• Still, 10th lord is in lagna and A10 is in lagna. "When A10 is in lagna, the person does some good work relating to the planets occupying it" — here Venus, Ketu and Mars.
• AL here is in Pisces, the 9th (11th from Moon in the 11th) — the dharma sthana, not the karma sthana as in the verse.
• Verdict: "Overall what you have is also a good combination, but it is not this combination in total."

Verse 16: No Work — Saturn with a Debilitated Planet in the 10th + Malefic in "Karma Amsa"

Combination: Saturn in the 10th house + with a debilitated planet (any planet) + karmāṁśe pāpa-saṁyukte

Result: Karma-hīna — the person has no good work. Either jobless, or not accomplishing anything considerable.

"Karma amsa" literally means the amsa of karma, the amsa of the 10th. It can be read in several ways. PVNR lists the readings he can think of and expressly does not give a final view:

Verse 17: Bad Deeds — 10th Lord in the 8th, 8th Lord in the 10th, with a Malefic

Combination: 10th lord in the 8th + 8th lord in the 10th (exchange) + pāpa-graheṇa saṁyukte, conjoined by a functional malefic

• The verse does not say which of the two must be with the malefic. "Probably either of them, or both." Simple reading: at least one of them is afflicted by a malefic.

Result: Duṣkarma-nirata — interested in bad actions; doing bad work.

Why:

• The 8th house is in general not an auspicious house.
• A10: the 10th lord in the 8th is in the 11th from the 10th. The 11th from the 8th is the 6th. So A10 is in the 6th house.
• An arudha falling in a dusthana like the 6th is bad for that arudha. The work suffers.
• With A10 in the 6th the person keeps struggling for his work — many obstacles, and he makes many enemies.

"Duṣkarma literally means bad karma, but it does not have to be bad karma. Either doing bad karma or having bad luck in the karma — he is struggling a lot on account of his work."

• If planets are well placed from Arudha Lagna, his image may still be fine. People may see him in a good light.

Verse 18: Handicapped Work — 10th Lord Debilitated + Malefics in the 10th and 7th

Combination: 10th lord in debility + a (functional) malefic in the 10th house + a malefic in karma-bhāt karma-ge, the 10th from the 10th, i.e. the 7th house

Result: Karma-vaikalya — many obstructions in work; the person is handicapped in his work.

Why the 7th house matters for work:

"In order to accomplish anything considerable, typically you have to work with others, you have to deal with others. So if the 7th house is weak, if it is afflicted by malefics, it is not auspicious for associating with other people and doing some good work."

The three together:

1. Malefic in the 7th = you are alone.
2. Malefic in the 10th = the 10th house is weak; you are unable to do things.
3. 10th lord debilitated = the 10th lord is your intelligence applied to your work, and "he is not in a good mood."

All three together: you will not be able to do much.

Verse 19: Good Fame — Moon in the 10th + 10th Lord in a Trine from the 10th + Lagna Lord in a Kendra

Combination: Moon in the 10th house + 10th lord in a trine from that house (tat-trikoṇa), i.e. in the 2nd, 6th or 10th + lagna lord in a quadrant

Result: Sat-kīrti-sahita — accompanied by good fame; well known.

Why:

• Moon in the 10th: Moon is one of the planets of name and fame, and symbolizes society. Moon in the 10th = well known among many people. "Some link between Moon and the 10th house is always good for fame and for activities in society which are known to a lot of people."
• 10th lord in another Artha Trikona (2, 6, 10): it is a connection between two Artha Trikonas.

"Artha Trikonas are the houses that show your work, the resources you have, how you put the resources to use, and finally what you get accomplished. So if there is a link between two of them, the person will actually get something done."

• Lagna lord in a quadrant: the intelligence of the person is directed towards some effort, some activity.
• Put together: he is doing some activity, he gets something accomplished because of the 10th lord, and with Moon in the 10th his work is exposed to the people. He is a doer and is recognized for it.
• The verse is given for the rasi chart, since nothing else is mentioned, "but of course you can extend it to the dasamsa also."

Verse 20: Good Fame — 11th Lord in the 10th + Strong 10th Lord + Jupiter's Aspect

Combination: 11th lord in the 10th house + 10th lord accompanied by strength + aspected by Jupiter (devendra-guru, the teacher of Indra)

• The verse does not say who is aspected by Jupiter. "Most probably the second one, the 10th lord."

Result: Sat-kīrti again — good fame, not notoriety.

Why:

• 11th lord in the 10th: "His agenda is fulfillment of desires, and he is in the house of work. So he has to give some fulfillment of desire through the work of the person."
• Labha Pada: the 10th is the 12th from the 11th, and the 12th from the 10th is the 9th. So A11 is in the 9th house. "Any arudha pada in the 9th house is greatly blessed." With A11 in the 9th the person fulfills his desires; whatever he wants to do, he gets done.
• On top of it the 10th lord is strong and aspected by Jupiter, a benefic. Good for doing good work, fulfilling desires relating to work, and becoming famous.

Verse 21: Very Famous — 10th Lord in the 9th + Lagna Lord in the 10th + Moon in the 5th

Combination: 10th lord in the 9th house + lagna lord in the 10th house + Moon in the 5th from lagna

Result: Khyāta-nāmā — the person becomes very famous.

Why:

• A10: the 10th lord in the 9th is in the 12th from the 10th; the 12th from the 9th is the 8th house. Per se that is not a good placement for the arudha — "but we will come to that."
• 10th lord in a trine is good for the 10th house. He is in the 9th from lagna and also the 5th from Moon — in a trine from both lagna and Moon. He gives the fruits of previous good karmas.
• Lagna lord shows how the person applies his intelligence. Lagna lord in the 10th = intelligence applied towards work. Good for leaving a good body of work behind.
• Lagna lord in the 10th → AL is in the 4th house (the 10th from the 10th is the 7th from lagna, which is not allowed, so take the 10th from it). AL, which shows the fame of the person, is in a quadrant.
• A10 in the 8th is the 5th from AL. AL is the image of the person; the 5th from AL is the recognition, the fame of that image. A10 there shows that the tangible work the person did has contributed to the fame of his image.

The lesson PVNR draws — arudhas from Arudha Lagna:

"Not just the placement of an arudha from lagna, but the placement of an arudha from Arudha Lagna is very important. It is perhaps more important."

• Any arudha in a trine from AL promotes and blesses the image of the person. It works in harmony with the image.
• If A10 is in the 8th from AL, the tangible work the person does causes upset, ups and downs, in his tangible image. That is not very auspicious.
• It can also be good: with good planets in A10, its lord strong, and good planets aspecting or occupying it, it can mean a sudden rise in the image.
• With A10 in the 8th from AL, the image in people's minds undergoes big changes on account of the work the world can see — especially when the corresponding dasas come.
• In this verse: A10 in a trine from AL, 10th lord in a trine from Moon and lagna, lagna lord in the 10th applying the intelligence to the work. The person does good work and is recognized for it.

Closing Verse of Chapter 21

"Thus I have given you the results of the 10th house in brief, O great Brahmin. From the relationship between lagna lord and the 10th lord (lagna-karmeśa-sambandha), you can imagine the rest also by yourself."

PVNR: "The link between lagna and the 10th is very important. Lagna is yourself and the 10th is your work."
