Verse 46 — 6th from Karakāṁśa

Verse: A malefic in the 6th from Karakāṁśa → "karṣaka": one who labours hard, specifically a farmer. A benefic there → "alasa", lazy. The 3rd house is judged the same way.

The teacher reads "malefic" and "benefic" here as functional malefic and functional benefic.

Why these two houses:

• 3rd = initiative. 6th = overcoming obstacles, fighting problems. One is initiative, the other is fighting spirit.
• Parāśara takes the 3rd and 6th from Karakāṁśa to show what kind of work a person does.

Benefic in the 6th (or 3rd):

• Parāśara says lazy. It can also mean he is not lazy but too soft, and does not know how to fight.
• Or he does not have to fight. Things happen smoothly, with no burning desire and no show of initiative needed.

Malefic in the 6th (or 3rd):

• A lot of energy is focused on the house of fighting.
• Depending on strength: one who works hard and gets things done, or one who wants to do things, cannot, and is frustrated.

Verses 47-48 — 7th from Karakāṁśa

Each result is one possibility out of many. Parāśara names one to open up the thinking.

Sun: the point is authority, not confinement

• Confinement is the surface. The Sun shows power and authority.
• The 7th is not only the wife but how you deal with the wife.
• One possibility: the wife herself is authoritative.
• The possibility the verse describes: a wife who can be bossed. "Come here, do this, do that." The native behaves as king or boss; she cooks, serves, stays inside the family circle and does not move among outsiders.
• A student took the verse to mean the native is confined. The teacher corrected: it is the wife.

Saturn: tapas today

• Tapas can be sāttvic, rājasic or tāmasic. Some did tapas for mokṣa, some to win a boon and rule the world.
• A person who stays day and night in a laboratory to find a new gene is doing a rājasic tapas. So tapasvinī can be read as a workaholic.

Rāhu: outside the tradition

• Other possibilities: a foreigner, a wife of another caste, or (a student's suggestion, accepted) a very materialistic wife.
• Rāhu is whatever is outside the box. The box is set by deśa, kāla and pātra. Where inter-caste marriage is normal, Rāhu will not show it.
• It does not mean he will marry a widow or a foreigner. It means the soul fancies it.

"Somebody with 7th house Rahu from Atmakaraka in the Navamsa, when he sees a foreigner who has a runa with him in a previous life, he may be more attracted than somebody else."

The student's question

After Mercury a student asked: Ātmakāraka is the self, so why is Parāśara giving the qualities of another person from it? The teacher's answer is Part 6.

Verse 49 — 8th from Karakāṁśa

• 8th from Karakāṁśa holding its own lord or a benefic → long life.
• Malefics conjoining or aspecting it → short life.
• Mixed influences → middling life.

The teacher's question: long life belongs to the body, not the soul. Why see it from Karakāṁśa?

"Eighth house from Karakamsa being strong does not necessarily mean somebody will be living long. It only means somebody wants to live long. His soul aspires to live long. There is a deep desire."

• Vivekananda died before 40. Shankaracharya died very young. They did not care how long they lived. Getting the job done, their dharma, mattered more.
• One who died very young in the last life, thinking "I wish I had lived long", may be born with long life as a goal of the soul.

Which chart: a student asked. The verse speaks of an aṁśa, so it is not the rāśi chart.

"We do not really know for sure, but it is probably Trimsamsa, because that is the one that shows suffering and problems. Out of all the charts that Parasara taught, for seeing death Trimsamsa is the most suitable one."

Verses 50-52 — 9th from Karakāṁśa

Benefic conjoining or aspecting the 9th

• "Satyavādī" — truthful. Truth is the highest dharma.
• "Guru-bhakta" — devoted to the guru. The 9th is the house of guru and dharma.
• "Swadharma-nirata" — engaged in his own dharma. Nirata is from rati: attachment, liking.

Malefic conjoining or aspecting the 9th

• "Swadharma-nirato bālye" — in childhood he follows his dharma.
• "Mithyāvādī ca vārdhake" — as he grows he calls it all nonsense and loses faith in right and wrong, God, religion.
• This is not a promise that he will be religious when young. A child does what the parents do. If the family is religious, so is he. As the pull of the surroundings fades, his own vāsanās bloom, and here the vāsanā is to be irreligious.
• Deśa-kāla-pātra applies. In a culture where one cannot leave the religion, he will follow it outwardly and question it inwardly.

Saturn and Rāhu conjoining or aspecting the 9th

• "Guru-drohī" — he cheats or deserts his guru.
• He turns away from the śāstras, ignores them, may even speak against them.
• The 9th is respect for scripture, service and surrender to the guru. Saturn and Rāhu are two depleting influences.

Take it with a pinch of salt

• If Saturn and Rāhu are functional benefics, the benefic verse applies.
• If they are the 9th lords — Karakāṁśa in Gemini makes the 9th Aquarius — the 9th lord aspecting the 9th is very good. He may be devoted to his guru, but the guru will be very orthodox (Saturn) or very unconventional, doing strange sādhanās (Rāhu).

"For every combination there is a positive side and negative side. He emphasizes only one in a particular case so that he expands our thinking. He shows one side of each coin. We have to see both the sides."

The class stops at verse 52. Verse 53 is for the next class.

Teaching — Swadharma

Prompted by the word "swadharma" in the verse.

"For somebody who has the right vasanas, like Arjuna, killing his gurus was his dharma. Krishna told him, do your dharma. Whereas for you and me, going and killing our gurus may not be dharma."

• The Vedic paradigm has no absolute, universal right and wrong. The lists of dos and don'ts were formalized more and more in Kali Yuga.
• Dharma depends on who you are, what your vāsanās and ṛṇas are. Nature expects different things through different people: one to destroy mighty warriors and rule, another to defeat people in debate and write commentaries.

"All this business of organized religions — thou shalt do this, thou shalt not do this — all this is basically an invention of Kali Yuga. There are some generic guidelines, but specifics will vary from person to person. And there is only swadharma, own dharma."

• The ṛṣis did not teach "follow Hindu dharma" or any other named dharma. They taught: follow your dharma.

How to find it:

• There is no formula. Follow what your conscience tells you.
• Do the best you can, with more and more detachment, and your dharma becomes clearer.
• Everyone has the voice. It may be faint. Suppress it and it gets weaker. Listen and it speaks louder.

A student then asked what conscience is. The answer is Part 7.
