Mental Retardation Case — Chart Analysis

Data: February 6, 2003, 11:34 PM, New Brunswick, New Jersey Presenting issue: Mental retardation (noticed ~September 2003 when ~7 months old; noticed around onset of Ketu dasha)

Why Both Moon AND Mercury Matter in Mental Problems

Moon = mind — the emotional/mental matrix Mercury = learning ability — how the mind adapts to and processes the world

"If you look at a child growing up, child looks at the whole world, 'if I press this, this happens' — drawing conclusions by experimenting. That is Mercury. When Mercury is weak, that learning ability goes away."

Differentiating mental conditions:

• Moon alone afflicted by Saturn/Rahu → depression, or mental slowness
• Moon alone afflicted by Mars → aggression, anger
• Moon + Mercury both afflicted → mental retardation (intelligence cannot connect to mind)
• Moon afflicted by Sun → over-control, OCD-type problems

"Usually in mentally retarded cases, you find not only Moon but also Mercury to be very badly afflicted."

Chart Findings (D30 = Trimshamsha)

Moon in D30: Moon + Saturn combination (Moon debilitated, Saturn retrograde)

• Moon in Gandanta (deep) — weakness amplified
• "Now given that he is in Gandanta, the fact that he is being afflicted by Saturn in both D6 and D30, that becomes even more dangerous."

Mercury in D30: Papakartari Yoga (Saturn on one side, Rahu-Ketu on other)

• Also: 8th lord in 9th house (Bhaagya sthana) = "death of protection"
• Two malefics aspecting Mercury by graha drishti: Mars (8th aspect) + Rahu (2nd aspect)
• Mars = 8th lord; Rahu = from 8th house → both 8th house related malefics attacking Mercury

Chart Findings (Rashi)

Moon in Gandanta in 6th house + Moon owns A8 → disease Arudha linked to Moon Mercury: 9th lord with 8th lord (also with Venus-lagna lord), not strongly weak in Rashi Ketu + Mars in 2nd house (Maraka sthana) + Mandi + Gulika = "big gang of evil planets in Maraka sthana"

• Ketu is lord of A8 (= A8 is tangible disease manifestation)
• A6 also in same area = tangible disease confirmed

"Because Ashta Kshetra (A8) is there, and in general Ketu is the planet of undiagnosable problems — problems that are tough to diagnose. You don't know why it happened."

Dasha History

• Mercury dasha at birth → Mercury = 8th lord in Bhagya sthana showing inexplicable problems from birth
• Ketu dasha started ~September 2003 (when problem was noticed)
• Ketu is Maraka + A8 lord + dispositor of Moon in D30 + in 8th house of D30

Prognosis by Dasha

"When Venus dasha comes, the girl can make a lot of progress and start behaving in a much more normal way."

Special Parivartana Rule

When Jupiter and Moon are in parivartana and parivartana triggers:

• Jupiter gives results as though in Cancer (6th house from Libra lagna = 6th lord in 6th = Harsha Yoga)
• Moon retains its original degree (29°) even after transposition → Moon still in Gandanta in Cancer in the parivartana reading

Key rule on parivartana degree: "If a planet was originally very advanced in the sign, he is still originally very advanced in sign even after the parivartana transposition."

Harsha Yoga Rule

Harsha Yoga = 6th lord in 6th house

• Valid for ALL planets, including Jupiter
• More powerful when 6th lord is a natural BENEFIC (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury)
• "Natural benefics giving Harsha Yoga = always happy and cheerful. That result is more prominent when it is Jupiter or Venus than when it is Mars in 6th house."

D24 Analysis (Learning)

4th house = primary education (most important house in D24)

• A6 + A8 in 4th house of D24 → obstacles in basic learning (but not catastrophic)
• Saturn (lagna lord) in 4th — normally strong, but retrograde + karka for 6/8 + those Arudhas present → "acts more like the 6/8 karka than the lagna lord"

Venus (from 2010): 4th lord exalted in D24 → "when Venus dasha comes, some acceleration in education" → in A11 (gains) = fulfillment

"Even though this girl may start off very poorly, she may do reasonably well at the end of the day."

Remedies

• Kali puja — Moon in Gandanta in 6th house with Saturn; Scorpio sign; they are Bengali → Kali perfectly suitable
• Lakshmi Narayana — Venus (lagna lord) + Mercury together → "Kali will kill the weakness; Lakshmi Narayana will increase the strength"
• Diamond ring for the child → accentuates Venus (lagna lord) results
• Narayana Kavacham recitation — very helpful

OCD Case — Chart Analysis

Data: December 15, 1988, 5:42 PM (17:42), Framingham, Massachusetts Issue: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) — hereditary from maternal grandfather (depression + mental problems); on medication for 3 weeks

Rectified lagna: Sagittarius (originally computed as Capricorn, rectified based on person doing okay in basic education → Sagittarius Pisces 4th house with Jupiter protecting makes more sense than Saturn in 4th)

Key Planetary Factors (Rashi)

• Lagna lord Mercury in 7th house = Marana Karaka Sthana for Mercury → Mercury extremely weak
• Moon with Rahu in 10th house; Moon owns A6 → Moon as A6 lord afflicted by Rahu = "adding wind to the fire"
• Sun in Moola nakshatra (deep Gandanta, ~0.5° of Sagittarius) — Sun is Atmakaraka
• Saturn afflicting Mercury (in Badhaka sthana), Sun + Saturn together

Key Planetary Factors (D30)

• Moon + Sun in D30 (Sun aspecting Moon)
• Saturn + Rahu + Ketu gang together in Trimshamsha
• Saturn and Rahu in D30 aspecting lagna
• "In Trimshamsha, if you see Mars, Saturn, and Rahu ganging together, be very careful — there is something going on."

OCD vs Depression vs Retardation — Distinguishing

"Saturn pulls into going into a shell; Mars pulls into aggression. When both pull simultaneously, there is a conflict and that conflict eventually blows up."

OCD = Sun influence on Moon: "Sun is the controller, the king. An exalted functional malefic, natural malefic Sun over-controlling the Moon = the mental faculty being over-controlled in one obsessive direction."

Dasha Using Saptarshi Nadi / Alternative Dasha

• At time of class (2006), running Sun dasha in alternative dasha → Sun in deep Gandanta = problem
• Problems started in 1999 during Rahu period → Rahu is with Moon
• Sun dasha = unlikely to bring cure (Sun is problem planet, deep Gandanta)

Prognosis

"Until 2029, no full cure expected. The problem may be on and off — one problem goes, another similar problem comes."

Sun's Significance for Medicine

Sun = planet of medicine (not Moon):

• Ashwini Devatas (divine doctors) = sons of Sun
• Moon creates a healer (emotional healer)
• Sun = formal medicine, professional doctor
• Mars can also contribute, but Sun is the primary medical planet

"Moon in 10th house can make a doctor — but that is more a healer. For formal medicine, it is Sun."

D24 Education Analysis

After rectification to Sagittarius lagna:

• 4th house (Pisces): Jupiter as 4th lord in 11th house with Mars (5th lord) → reasonable protection for basic education despite A6 + A8 in 4th
• 9th house in D24: Sun extremely strong in 1st house + AL there → medical education strongly indicated
• "Going to medical college or studying medicine is definitely possible."
• "9th house is quite strong. Bachelor's education is likely to be stronger than basic education."

Religiousness Analysis (Vimshamsha)

Key principle: Vimshamsha = primary chart for religiousness. "If you want to judge the religiousness of a person, Vimshamsha is the real key."

From D20:

• A9 (Dharmapada) in Bhadakasthana + A8 (Mrityupada) joining it → "Mrityupada with Dharmapada = won't follow standard material dharma"
• 9th lord mercury in 8th from 9th house = not strong for dharma
• 9th house in Rashi: 9th lord in MK Sthana; Rahu aspecting

"Badhaka lord in 9th house = breaking idols. A9 in Bhadakasthana in Vimshamsa = not conducive to following tangible dharma."

Remedies

• Sri Rudram — for Sun (Shiva) in deep Gandanta in Moola nakshatra; mother can chant or listen to Namakam and Chamakam (MP3)
• Rama nama — Sun + Saturn + Mercury together; Sun-Mercury link = Vishnu connection; "Sri Rama Rama Rama — one mala daily, or whenever free, think 'Sri Ram Ram Rama'"
• "Both are covered: Rudram covers Sun-Saturn; Rama nama covers Sun-Mercury. All ends are covered."

For mother:

• Chant Rudram
• Worship Sri Rama
