OCD Chart Analysis — Moon+Sun Affliction Pattern, Sun in Moola Gandanta & D24 Medical Education

The case: a high-school senior, recently diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder — he washes his hands again and again and repeats the same action many times. On medication for three weeks. Hereditary on the mother's side: the maternal grandfather had depression. He was very angry with his mother in 1999, 2002 and 2003, was fine in 2000–2001, got better in 2004, and has trouble again in 2006. His mother asks whether this is for life, and wants remedies.

About the birth time. The student's record read 17:42:38, which gives a Capricorn lagna in D-24. Late in the class the teacher moves it to 17:42:24 to get Sagittarius rising in D-24 (see "D-24" below). Only the D-24 lagna changes; the rāśi lagna is Gemini throughout. The site's engine turns the D-24 lagna a few seconds earlier than the teacher's software did, so the chart on this page is cast at 17:42:00 to show the Sagittarius D-24 he reads from.

The Rāśi Chart

A student had been given this chart as a puzzle and guessed a bone problem. Good guess, says the teacher: Sun stands for bones, Moon for blood, Mars for nerves; Sun can give digestive trouble too.

• Lagna lord Mercury is in the 7th — his maraṇa kāraka sthāna — with Sun and Saturn. The 7th is also the bādhaka sthāna for Gemini; all three are in it.
• Saturn is the 8th lord and the kāraka of disease, afflicting the lagna lord, and has his 3rd aspect on Moon. He is the 9th lord as well, which is not terrible — but he is with his enemy Sun and unhappy, so the 8th-house results are the likelier ones.
• Sun is at half a degree of Sagittarius, in Mūla, Nirṛti's nakṣatra — extremely deep gaṇḍānta. He is the worst planet in the rāśi chart.
• Moon is with Rāhu in Aquarius, the 9th house. Moon is the lord of A6. A planet linked to the 6th house, A6 or A8 can give the problem; Moon as A6 lord with Rāhu "adds wind to the fire".

On which afflictions of the Moon are worst:

• Saturn, Rāhu and Ketu are worse than Mars. Mars alone on the Moon is not a big problem — much aggression, and it can even be good.
• Mars and Saturn on the Moon in triṁśāṁśa is terrible.

"Mars is pulling in the aggressive direction, Saturn is pulling in the going-into-a-shell direction. So there is a contradiction, conflict, and that conflict eventually will blow up into some problem."

• That is bad in rāśi too, but in triṁśāṁśa be very careful. Mars, Saturn and Rāhu ganging together is never good, least of all there.

The gaṇḍānta rule. Be wary of any planet in deep gaṇḍānta; something has to be done about it. Most of all for lagna, lagna lord, Sun, Moon and perhaps the Moon-sign lord — "these are the fountains of your existence".

The Daśā

Lagna lord in the 7th: the daśā used is Dvisaptati Sama.

• The trouble began in 1999 in Rāhu daśā (Rāhu–Jupiter). Rāhu is with Moon, and in D-30 he aspects lagna. "Rāhu started the problem."
• Sun daśā is running. The bad years 2002–2003 fall in it, and the problem keeps recurring.
• Saturn in D-30 is with Rāhu and Ketu in the 7th, all aspecting lagna. Rāśi and D-30 have the same lagna, Gemini.

D-30 — Sun and Mars on the Moon

• Moon is in Libra. Sun is exalted in Aries and aspects him. Sun is a natural malefic and, for this lagna, a functional malefic too. The teacher speaks of Moon as being "with Sun"; in the chart it is the opposition.
• Mars, from Pisces, also aspects Moon (8th-house aspect).
• Because Sun is in gaṇḍānta in rāśi, whatever weakness he causes by aspect in D-30 or any other bad chart is multiplied. "Always keep that at the back of your mind."

What each malefic does to the Moon:

"It is not even exactly aggression. It is basically some problem with extra control — over-control of the mind in a particular way. And that is possible with Sun. Sun is the controller, Sun is the king."

• A student says it is Mars more than Sun here. Both aspect Moon. Mars explains the anger at the mother — Moon is the mother. Sun is more than anger: control.
• The teacher is open about the limit of this. Rāhu and Saturn are the planets of addiction and weakness; Sun and Mars of aggression; obsession lies somewhere between. "I am not fully sure." What he points to is the contrast: Saturn and Rāhu on the Moon in the first chart, an exalted Sun and Mars on the Moon in this one.

Will It Be Cured?

"Let us just be honest. We do not want to give false hopes."

• Saturn, though 9th lord, is also 8th lord and probably does not want to cure.

"Until 2029, one problem may go, another similar problem may come. It may be on and off. My judgment is, until 2029 there is no full cure for this person."

• He adds that 2029 is not something to say to the mother. With remedies it can be kept under control.

Is He Religious? — Viṁśāṁśa

The son does not believe in religion, so the remedies will go to the mother. A student asks about lighter substitutes — lighting a lamp or a candle. The teacher: the divide is not Indian or American but between one who will do a procedure and one who thinks it is nonsense. For the second, tell someone attached to him who will do it for him.

• Rāśi: Rāhu is in the 9th, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna, and the 9th lord Saturn is poorly placed in the 7th. Not conducive.
• Viṁśāṁśa is the key.

"If you want to judge the religiousness of a person, Viṁśāṁśa is the real key."

• D-20 lagna is Libra. The 9th lord Mercury is in the 4th. A student calls that good. It is — but it is the 8th from the 9th, so the 9th lord is not strong.
• Organised, tangible religion is not even the 9th house; it is A9. A9 falls in Leo, the bādhaka sthāna. Bādhaka lord in the 9th, 9th lord in the bādhaka, and A9 in the bādhaka sthāna of Viṁśāṁśa all work against following tangible religion.
• A8 is in the same sign. Mṛtyu-pada with dharma-pada: he will not follow the standard, tangible kind of dharma.
• Lagna lord Venus is in the 5th with Jupiter and Saturn — some hope when the right daśā comes. But this is not a chart that turns religious later.
• Navāṁśa gives the overall sense of dharma. The 9th lord Jupiter, also the kāraka of dharma, is in Rāhu's sign with Rāhu, in A8. He does not have a strong sense of dharma.

Remedies

• Mercury is the only saviour and has to be strengthened; and the planet causing the trouble has to be prayed to.
• Moon is the main problem planet; Rāhu only irritates him. But the running daśā is of Sun, in gaṇḍānta. It is Sun who must be propitiated.
• Sun in Mūla: pray to Śiva. Śrī Rudram — for health problems in general, and for gaṇḍānta planets in particular, it is very auspicious; here it is Sun with Saturn. If the mother can chant it, she chants; if not, she listens to the Namakam and Camakam.
• Rāma (a student's suggestion, accepted). Sun is with Mercury and Saturn, the two planets who show Viṣṇu. For the son: one mālā of "Śrī Rāma Rāma Rāma" every day — eleven would be the ideal, one will do at his level — or simply thinking it whenever he is free. The mother can worship Rāma and chant or hear Rudram.
• Mercury, the lagna lord, needs Viṣṇu; Mercury with Sun is already Śrī Rāma.

"If he does both Rudram and Rāma, both are covered. All the ends are covered."

The family uses conventional medicine and will go on doing so; the prayers are in addition.

D-24 — College, and Why the Time Was Moved

He is about to apply to colleges, has to write the essays, and does not have the steady mind for it. He wants to study medicine.

• At 17:42:38 the D-24 lagna is Capricorn, with Saturn in the 4th and ārūḍha lagna there too. Saturn in the 4th would have made him a dull boy.
• But apart from the disorder his schooling has been okay. That fits Sagittarius better. The time is moved to 17:42:24. "We are not confident."

With Sagittarius rising in D-24:

• 4th house is Pisces, with A6 and A8 — obstacles, not smooth. But it is a favourable sign, and its lord Jupiter is in the 11th with the 5th lord Mars and the 6th lord Venus. Jupiter protects the basic education.
• 9th house is Leo, with Sun very strong in his own sign, and AL is there. Medical education is quite possible.
• AL in a sign of D-24 shows a new image forming around learning in that planet's period. Sun daśā is running and Sun–Jupiter is about to begin — favourable.
• The 9th has blemishes: the bādhaka lord Mercury aspects it, Rāhu aspects it, and the Sun's gaṇḍānta "is hanging on his head". Still not bad at all.
• The bachelor's education is likely to be stronger than the basic education — provided this rectification of the D-24 lagna is right.

Sun is the planet of medicine. A student thought it was the Moon.

"Moon creates a healer. That is why they say Moon in the 10th house can make a doctor. But that is more than doctor, that is healer. If you are talking about formal medicine, it is Sun, not Moon."

• The natural doctor is Sun. The Aśvinī devatās, the divine doctors, are his children.
• Mars can have a role too.

Marriage

• In rāśi the upapada (UL) has Rāhu in it.
• In navāṁśa the 7th lord Venus is with Ketu in an inimical sign, and Rāhu aspects the 7th house.
• Rāhu–Ketu on both: most likely he marries someone from a different culture. The marital life is not good.
