D9 Marriage Analysis — Same Antardasha in Different Mahadashas Gives Different Results

Example Chart — medical career and sādhanā

Situation: Married woman, two daughters (born 1978 and 1980), a pediatrician. She has been on a spiritual path for the last 7–8 years and now wants to give her time to a spiritual cause. The published class notes put it more strongly: she wants to renounce family life and live in an āśrama.

The question a student brought: Is this the right direction for her? What will be the impact on marriage and children?

PVNR's Conceptual Distinction

"You don't have to abandon anything. Spirituality is basically seeing who you are, where you are, when you are. Just be — that is spirituality."

• True spirituality needs nothing external and no change in the external environment.
• Wanting to spread spirituality, help people, do something in society = modifying the external world. That is Dasamsa.

"You modify the world around you through Daśāṁśa, not through Viṁśāṁśa. You modify yourself through Viṁśāṁśa."

• D20 = the internal changes.
• D10 = those internal changes wanting a role in the outside world.

Which Charts Must Be Right First

• Spiritual cause → D20 and D10. Marriage → D9. Children → D7.
• The lagna of each must be confirmed before any reading. The recorded time is from 1946 and "may be wrong by 15 minutes also".
• Order of work: fix the Navamsa first (wide window), then D7, then D10, then D20 (the narrowest window).

Satabdika Dasha — When Applicable

• Śatābdika daśā applies when the Navamsa lagna is vargottama — the same sign as the Rashi lagna.
• It depends on the Navamsa lagna being right. If the Navamsa lagna is off by one sign, the daśā no longer applies. Then Vimshottari is the daśā to use.
• In this chart the Rashi lagna is Sagittarius. The recorded time gives Scorpio Navamsa lagna; the rectified time gives Sagittarius, which is vargottama. So Śatābdika applies.
• Śatābdika periods used in class: Jupiter mahādaśā (marriage and both children), Mars mahādaśā (to 2005), Saturn mahādaśā (from 2005).

Rectification Process — This Chart

Step 1 — Navamsa from the Marriage

• The marriage date is the best event for fixing the Navamsa. Married in 1976 (first given as "about 29 years back", then confirmed as 1976).
• Vimshottari in 1976: Jupiter mahādaśā, Mercury antardaśā.

Scorpio lagna (the recorded time):

• Jupiter is in lagna aspecting the 7th house, 7th from Venus, and UL lord. A decent candidate for marriage.
• Mercury is 8th and 11th lord, in the 9th house. His agenda is not conducive to marriage.

Sagittarius lagna (lagna one sign forward):

• Jupiter is no longer UL lord, but he is lagna lord and still 7th from Venus. Still a reasonable candidate.
• Mercury is the 7th lord in the 8th house. Planets in the 8th break marriage, but in the Navamsa the 7th house is the house that gives marriage, and that is his agenda. He gives marriage, with 8th-house changes alongside.
• Mercury is the 7th lord in the Rashi chart as well.

Libra lagna:

• Jupiter is 3rd and 6th lord in the 2nd house. Not a strong possibility. Rejected.

Mercury as antardaśā lord fits Sagittarius better than Scorpio.

"When you are judging Mahadasha, do not expect that the strongest candidate to give a result should be the running Mahadasha at the time of the event."

A reasonable candidate is enough for the mahādaśā.

• Mahādaśās are long, so things are not crystal clear at that level. Jupiter alone does not separate Scorpio, Sagittarius and Libra.
• For a specific event the antardaśā lord matters more.

Step 2 — Śatābdika Confirms Sagittarius

With Sagittarius Navamsa lagna the lagna is vargottama and Śatābdika applies. In 1976 it gives Jupiter mahādaśā, Saturn antardaśā.

• Saturn is with Venus in the Navamsa and gives Venus's result.
• From the mahādaśā lord Jupiter (Scorpio), Venus is the 7th lord in the 7th house (Taurus). He can give marriage.
• In the Rashi chart Saturn is the lord of UL and sits in the 7th house.
• From UL in the Navamsa, Saturn and Venus are in the 9th house; Venus is the 9th lord in the 9th from UL.
• Conclusion: Navamsa lagna is Sagittarius. Two daśās agree.

Step 3 — D7, D10, D20 Narrow the Time

• D7 (Part 8) fits both births, so the time is not earlier by the 3½ minutes that would change the Saptamsha lagna.
• Time set to 4:06:45 AM — enough to bring the Navamsa lagna into Sagittarius. The birth is at that time or after.
• D10 (Part 9): lagna changes to Virgo 1 minute 20 seconds later. Leo fits, so the window is 4:06:45 to 4:08:05.
• D20 does not change inside that window.

D7 Saptamsha Analysis — Children

Counting the First Child

• D7 lagna is Gemini with Sun and Rahu. The 7th house is Sagittarius with Ketu and Moon.
• A node is in the 7th → the count is reversed.
• 5th house counted backward from Gemini = Aquarius: the first child.

Saturn or Rahu as Lord of Aquarius?

• Rahu is in lagna with Sun. Saturn is alone in the 6th house (Scorpio).
• The usual rule: the planet with more planets is stronger. PVNR asked for the rationale instead of applying it blindly.

"Unless you understand the rationale behind various rules, you will not be able to do justice."

• Rahu is with Sun, the planet he eclipses. He is exalted and "looking straight at the face of Sun".
• Check the closeness inside the Saptamsha, not in Rashi. Each Saptamsha is an arc of 4°17′; scale the position within that arc up to 30°. Here Sun is at about 3½° of Gemini in D7 and Rahu at about 22½°, Sun moving forward and Rahu backward. They are approaching each other.
• Rahu is excited about reaching Sun and preoccupied with it. He ignores other things.
• Saturn in the 6th house is the more auspicious of the two.
• When the rules do not settle it, fall back on the daśā at the event. The first child came in Jupiter–Saturn. Saturn is the lord to take.
• Saturn is in an even sign (Scorpio) → girl. Confirmed: the first child (1978) is a daughter.

Is Jupiter Daśā Capable of Giving Children?

Both children were born in Jupiter mahādaśā. In D7 Jupiter is in the 5th house (Libra), a quadrant lord (7th and 10th), and putrakāraka in the 5th. Reasonably well placed.

Second Child (October 1980)

• 3rd house counted backward from Aquarius = Sagittarius. Its lord Jupiter is in Libra with Mars.
• A planet in Sagittarius or Libra can give the second child in its antardaśā: Moon, Jupiter, Mars. Ketu is also in Sagittarius but not auspicious here.
• The second child came in Jupiter–Moon. Moon is in Sagittarius.
• By the odd/even rule Jupiter in Libra gives a boy. It was a girl.
• The native added that the second child was premature and almost died.
• From the published class notes (not in the surviving recording): Ketu sits in the end house, Sagittarius, but Jupiter has 11th-house argala on his own sign Sagittarius. The child was saved by Jupiter's blessing.
• The class notes' general rule: when the count meets a node, the strength of the end house decides whether the child is saved. If it is weak, a miscarriage may happen.

Why No Third Child

• The second child's sign holds Ketu. The count "came and landed in Ketu".

"If you come and end up with Rāhu or Ketu, that is the end."

• Different case — the next sign has to cross a node: the child may not come, unless the next sign is strong with the influence of Jupiter or Venus. Hypothetical on this chart: if Ketu were in Scorpio, the third child would come from Libra, and Jupiter is in Libra, so it probably would have been given.
• Landing in the node is the stronger block. PVNR knows a couple of exceptions where the next sign was strong enough, but the thumb rule is: no further child.

Verdict

The Saptamsha is accurate. Saturn gave the first child, Moon gave the second, Ketu ended the line.

D9 Navamsa — Marriage Analysis

Saturn Dasha in D9 (Satabdika)

• Saturn mahādaśā, Saturn antardaśā is running. Saturn is with Venus and gives Venus's result. "Effectively, it is Venus–Venus."
• Venus is the 6th lord in the 6th house (Taurus): Harsha Yoga. He is also in maraṇa-kāraka-sthāna (MKS) there, and he is the significator of marriage placed in the 6th.
• Any planet in the 6th can give a break in marriage, even divorce.
• The 6th is the 12th from the 7th: the house of compromises in marriage. When the compromise is not made, it is the house of quarrel.
• Venus has no connection with Mars here, the kāraka for quarrel. He is in his own house giving Harsha Yoga.
• Verdict: a happy compromise. But the marriage is not likely to continue the way it was. Some break, or some change in the marital arrangement. Not smooth sailing.

Key Principle — Same Antardasha in Different Mahadashas

The same Saturn antardaśā gave the marriage in Jupiter mahādaśā. Why does it now show an end?

"When you judge an antardaśā, lagna is only half important. The Mahādaśā lord is the other half."

"The same antardaśā in different Mahādaśās can give considerably different results."

• Venus antardaśā in Jupiter mahādaśā is not the same as in Mars mahādaśā, and not the same as in Mercury mahādaśā.
• In Jupiter mahādaśā: from Jupiter, Venus is the 7th lord in the 7th house. Perfect for marriage.
• In Saturn mahādaśā Jupiter is no longer the centre. Lagna is. From lagna Venus is in the 6th house: compromise or quarrel.
• One level down the same rule holds: for a pratyantardaśā take the antardaśā lord as the reference.

Which Planets Can End the Marriage

• The 7th house is the house of marriage itself. Count mārakas from it. Moon is the 2nd lord from the 7th, in the 3rd from it.
• From lagna Moon is the 8th lord. The 8th lord gives trouble in marriage, a lot of anxiety about it, and possibly its end.
• Mars is by nature against marriage. Saturn is the kāraka for discomfort.

Timing Within Saturn–Saturn

• The first pratyantardaśā, Saturn–Saturn–Saturn, is very rough. It runs to about the end of 2007.
• Then Saturn–Saturn–Sun. From lagna Sun is the 9th lord — the greatest protector — in the 4th house of comfort and direction, in a friendly sign. From Saturn, Sun is the 4th lord in the 11th house of gains. The 4th house is the common theme.
• Sun gives comfort and a sense of direction in dharmic life. Whatever discomfort Venus gives through MKS and his company with Saturn eases then.

Annual D9 (2006) — Marriage Assessment

The Tithi Praveśa year begins 26 February 2006. Ruler of the year: Sun.

• Annual Navamsa lagna is Taurus. Sun is the 4th lord in the 10th house — he is fine.
• Jupiter is in lagna. Auspicious on the face of it, but he is the 8th lord in lagna.
• Mars and Ketu are in the 12th house, in Aries. Mars is the 7th lord (Ketu co-owns Scorpio), in his own house.
• Mars shows sudden change and impulsiveness; Ketu is more sudden still, and is the planet of spirituality. Their agenda is the 7th house — a dharmic relationship with the husband — and they sit in the house of giving up.
• Aries is itself a sudden sign.

"She may be thinking for a long time, but suddenly she may do something."

• Reading: compromise and detachment; a sudden walking away. Some separation is possible in the coming year.
• Jupiter is the strongest candidate to give it. Mars and Ketu give the internal detachment.
• Jupiter is the 8th lord of struggle and anxiety, but as a natural benefic he does not give much pain.
• The published class notes place the critical months at November 2006–January 2007.
• Also from the class notes: Rahu is in the 6th house, so Rahu daśā of the year shows quarrels with the husband. Saturn is in the 6th in exchange with Venus, so he acts like Venus in his own house: there may be fights in Saturn daśā too, but things will not turn ugly.

The Husband — Graha Ārūḍha of the 7th Lord (L7)

PVNR went back to the natal Navamsa to read the husband.

• 7th house is Gemini; its lord Mercury is in Cancer. The house is 12th from the lord, so take the 12th from the house: Taurus is L7. Read the husband from it as lagna.
• Venus is lagna lord in lagna. Saturn, 9th and 10th lord from Taurus, is with him — a yoga in lagna.
• The running Saturn daśā gives Venus's result for the husband as well.
• Prediction: some reluctance at the beginning, more so before 2005 in the previous daśā. Eventually he also gets interested and comes onto that path.

The Husband's Year

From the notes (this stretch of the recording is lost): in the annual Navamsa, L7 falls in Gemini.

• Jupiter, bādhakeśa for Gemini, is in the 12th from it. Inexplicable problems get solved in Jupiter daśā.
• Mars and Ketu are in the 11th from it, Mars in his own house. Malefics in the 11th are good.
• Venus in the 8th from it is also good.
• Nothing bad is seen for the husband this year.

Annual D20 (2006) — Spiritual Activity

• Annual D20 lagna is Sagittarius. Sun, the 9th lord, is in the 10th. Mercury, the 10th lord, is in the 9th with Jupiter, who is lagna lord and 4th lord.
• A dharma-karmādhipati yoga with the lagna lord and 4th lord in it. "Extremely auspicious."
• The 10th house of D20 is activity related to spirituality. Sun in it is the ruler of the year.
• So her spiritual life "may not be just internal anymore", not just sādhanā. It comes to the fore: going to an āśrama, talking to people, giving money for a cause. Some recognition can come.
• Annual D10 (from the notes): the same three planets are in yoga there too — Jupiter and Sun in the 5th, Mercury in the 10th.

"This year may be a very important year. She may actually start implementing her thought."

The marriage may have to suffer for it. There may be a break in the marriage.

Annual D7 (2006) — First Daughter's Marriage

This reading is not in the surviving recording; it is kept from the earlier notes. The placements match the annual chart.

• Annual D7 lagna is Scorpio with Moon and Rahu. The 7th house, Taurus, holds Sun and Ketu.
• Scorpio is even, which would mean counting backward. Ketu in the 7th reverses that → count forward. The 5th from lagna = Pisces: the first daughter for the year.
• Pisces as her lagna: lagna lord Jupiter is in lagna — strong.
• Her 7th lord Mercury is in the 7th house (Virgo). Very good for marriage.
• UL falls in Aries. Its lord Mars is exalted.
• Venus is in Cancer, a fruitful sign: a trine from her lagna and a quadrant from UL.
• Against it: Moon is eclipsed by Rahu in the 8th from UL, and Sun is with Ketu in the 2nd from UL. Venus is strong enough — marriage is possible.
• Best periods for the daughter's marriage in the year: Mercury daśā or Venus daśā.

The Children — Natal D7 and the Mother's Year

The daughters are also on a spiritual path. The mother wants them to marry.

When Will the First Daughter Marry (Natal D7)

• The first daughter's lagna is Scorpio, with Saturn in it (Part 8).
• Venus, her 7th lord, is in the 9th house of dharma (Cancer). She is not likely to remain unmarried.
• The mother is running Saturn daśā. Saturn is the UL lord for the daughter and sits in her lagna. Venus aspects UL from the 7th.
• From UL there is no blockage in the 2nd, 7th or 8th.
• Saturn is a strong candidate to give the marriage. Whether 2006 is the year is read from the annual D7 (Part 16).

How the Mother Feels About Her Children in 2006 (Annual D7)

• Annual D7 lagna (Scorpio) holds Moon and Rahu. No peace this year regarding her children.
• Moon is bādhakeśa for Scorpio lagna and debilitated in lagna: a lot of mental torment.
• The lagna lord shows how she applies her intelligence in that environment. Mars is exalted in the 3rd: she will be forceful and have the strength to overcome the problems.
• Jupiter is the 5th lord in the 5th, Venus the 7th lord in the 9th, Mercury the 11th lord in the 11th, exalted: some gain, some desire about the children fulfilled.
• Remedy: worship of the 5th lord Jupiter. It keeps her calm and able to handle her emotions about the children.
