Digbala (Directional Strength) Complete Summary, 5th House = Mantra + Bhakti + Scholarship + Occult, & A5 Position Table for Houses 7–12

Digbala (complete): Mercury+Jupiter → 1H (East); Moon+Venus → 4H (North); Saturn → 7H (West); Sun+Mars → 10H (South). Rationale: Sun+Mars = fiery planets of action; get strength in 10H of karma (South = Yama's direction, fire and action). Mercury+Jupiter = planets of intelligence; strength in 1H (East = rising direction = fresh new thinking). Moon+Venus = planets of emotion and pleasure; strength in 4H (North = direction of home and peace). Saturn = discipline; strength in 7H (West = setting direction = patience, letting things come). 5th house multiple meanings: (1) Intelligence and judgment; (2) Children/progeny; (3) Purva Punya (past life merit); (4) Devotion/bhakti/upasana; (5) Mantra (5H = mantra; 8H = sadhana; 5L in 8H = intense sadhana-oriented scholar); (6) Scholarship in creative/speculative areas; (7) Following/admirers. 5H + 12H connection → occult scholarship (hidden sciences, astrology, tantra). 5H + 8H connection → deep sadhana capacity and workaholic achievement. A5 position table (houses 7-12): 7H→9H (blessed trine); 8H→8H (anxiety, same; exception applied); 9H→trine (blessed); 10H→connected to karma; 11H→2H (fame from resourcefulness); 12H→weak. General rule: A5 in trine = children and fame blessed; A5 in 8H = anxiety; A5 in 2H = fame from wealth/resourcefulness.

"Sun and Mars are the fiery planets of action — they get directional strength in the 10th house of karma. Moon and Venus are the planets of emotion and pleasure — they get strength in the 4th house of home and peace. Mercury and Jupiter get strength in the lagna — the rising direction, fresh new thinking."

BPHS Chapter 25 — 5th Lord in Houses 7–12

5th Lord in 7th House

Sanskrit results:

  • Māṇī — honorable, respected
  • Sarva-dharma-samanvitaha — endowed with all kinds of dharma; very religious, pious, righteous
  • Putrādhi-sukha-yuktasya — happiness from children
  • Paropakāṇe-rataha — helpful to others

Why the results make sense:

Honorable (Māṇī):

  • 5th lord in 7th = "someone very active in interacting with people; popular because of it"
  • From 10th house: 5th lord = 8th lord from 10th → not really a strong honor result; "context is different — this is about popularity through interaction, not accomplishments"
  • "He may or may not have accomplished a lot, but he is well known in his circles"

Very dharmic (Sarva-dharma):

  • 5th lord in 7th has Argala on 9th house (7th to 9th = 3rd Argala? No — actually from 7th position, Argala falls on different houses)
  • Taking 9th house as lagna: 5th lord in 7th = 9th lord in 11th from 9th → "9th lord in the 11th from 9th is awesome — bhagya from 9th protects 9th; in 11th of fulfillment"
  • "As far as 9th house of dharma is concerned, this planet is really blessed in its placement — shows great dharma, piety, righteousness"

A5 (Arudha of 5th) placement:

  • 5th lord in 7th → A5 is in 9th house (7th from 5th = 11th; 11th from 5th is acceptable? No — 5th to 7th = 3rd, 3rd from 7th = 9th; standard Arudha calculation)
  • "Arudha of any house if it falls in a trine — that house's Arudha is blessed"
  • A5 in 9th = "tangible fame and children are blessed"

Happy with children:

  • 5th lord in a quadrant (7th) from lagna → "5th lord well placed in a quadrant"
  • "5th lord has Argala on 4th house" (7th to 4th = Argala? From 7th, 4th Argala falls on 4th house) → "feeding comfort of the person; person is comfortable and peaceful about what his children are doing"

Helpful to others (Paropakāṇa):

  • Taking 7th house as lagna: 5th lord in 7th = 11th lord in lagna from 7th
  • "11th lord in lagna from 7th shows fulfillment for other people"
  • "He plays a role in other people getting what they want, fulfilling their desires — engaged in paropakara"

5th Lord in 8th House

Sanskrit results:

  • Svalpa-putra-sukham vitaha — little happiness from children; not really happy with children
  • Kāsa-svāsa samāyuktaha — breathing disorders (cough, bronchitis, asthma, allergies)
  • Krodhī — angry, short-tempered
  • Sukhavad-jetaha — wretched; no peace or comfort; always tense/unhappy

Why the results make sense:

Children unhappy:

  • A5 calculation: 5th lord in 8th → 4th from 5th = 8th; 4th from 8th = 11th; but Arudha of 5th cannot be in 5th or 11th (axis) → A5 in 8th house (same house)
  • "If Arudha of any house is in the 8th house from lagna, it's not auspicious — tensions related to that house"
  • "He has tensions related to children; may not have them, or has them but they keep him tense"

Breathing problems:

  • 3rd house = throat, upper respiratory tract, ENT
  • 5th lord in 8th = 6th house from 3rd → "planet in 6th from 3rd house can give ENT problems — ear, nose, throat, especially respiratory tract"
  • PVNR personal example: "During my Saturn Dasha (Saturn = my 5th lord in 8th house), I had allergic bronchitis for about 8 years. Only after Mercury Dasha started and I discovered Ayurveda did I cure myself."

Anger (Krodhī):

  • "8th house = house of anger (Krodha from the Shadripu mapping: 8th = Krodha)"
  • 5th lord in 8th has Argala on 5th house of emotions → "the planet wants the 5th house of emotional stability but is in the 8th house of anger"
  • PVNR: "I was quite short-tempered in my Saturn Dasha. Saturn alone is not really an angry planet, but it was Mars who was with Saturn in Aries (Mars's sign) — so the combination was quite angry."

Wretched/tense (Sukhavad-jetaha):

  • "Planet in charge of emotional stability (5th lord) in 8th house of anxiety and tension → always tense and not relaxed or happy"

PVNR's personal example — positives of 5th lord in 8th:

"It was during Saturn Dasha that all the materially good things happened to me — coming state first, getting BA degrees in Sanskrit and Hindi at age 10-11, going to IIT, coming to US, getting Master's, having 9+ GPA at IIT Madras. All academic distinctions happened in Saturn Dasha."

— PVNR

Why good results despite 5th lord in 8th:

  • 5th lord in 8th has Argala on 5th house → gives influence on scholarship (5th house)
  • 5th lord in 8th also has Argala on 7th and 10th houses
  • "Planet who has the key to scholarship has a strong influence on karma and interactions — you use scholarship in your karma and interactions"
  • "5th house is mantra; 8th house is sadhana — someone who can do intense sadhana, sit for a long time and repeat mantra without worry"
  • "5th house is scholarship; 8th house is working hard — a workaholic scholar who works very hard to get scholarship"

5th Lord in 9th House

Sanskrit results:

  • Putra bhūpo vā somo bhavet — the child will be a king or equivalent; very powerful/successful
  • Svayam granthakartā vā — or he himself is a famous author/writer
  • Kuladeepakaha — one who brings light/fame to the family lineage

Why the results make sense:

Powerful/fortunate son:

  • 9th = fortune; 5th = children → "5th lord in 9th = child is extremely fortunate; very good position in life"
  • "Doesn't literally mean king — means very powerful, prominent person in life"
  • (Note: Santanam mistranslated this as the native being a prince — PVNR corrects: it is specifically about the son, not the native)

Famous (Kuladeepakaha):

  • A5 (Arudha of 5th) calculation: 5th lord in 9th → 5th from 5th = 9th; 5th from 9th = 1st? Actually standard: A5 in trine is blessed
  • "5th lord in a trine — 5th house is fame; lord in trine = very auspicious for fame"
  • From 3rd house (communication) as lagna: 5th lord in 9th = "in 7th house aspecting it; chance of reputation through writing/communication"
  • "Granthakarta: in old times writing a book was one of the very few ways to become famous — bringing knowledge to the world"
  • "He is famous, world talks about him and his family — he is the light of the family"

5th Lord in 10th House

Sanskrit results:

  • Rāja-yoga hī jāyate — Rajayoga; a king-like combination
  • Aneka-sukha-bhogī — enjoys various pleasures
  • Khyātakirtir nāro bhavet — earned great fame; accumulated fame

Why the results make sense:

Rajayoga:

  • Trine lord (5th) in quadrant (10th) = "link between trine and quadrant — the classical basis of Rajayoga"
  • "Accomplishing something AND getting fame for it — good combination"
  • Digbala bonus: "Sun and Mars get good digbala in 10th house — planets of fire and action; conducive to work and karma"

Enjoys comforts:

  • 5th lord in 10th aspects the 4th house (7th from 10th = 4th) → "trine lord aspecting 4th house of sukha"
  • "Not only Rajayoga but also aspecting sukha house — can actually ENJOY comforts, not just have them"
  • Using word bhogī (enjoyer) not vitaha (possessor)
  • Caveat from student: "In my case (Mars in 10th), the planet is Mars — a planet of action, not enjoyment. I derive pleasure from karma/work itself, not from material comforts." PVNR agrees: "For real enjoyment of material comforts, Moon and Venus are the karakas — Mars converts water to steam"

Accumulated fame:

  • Taking 5th house as lagna: 5th lord in 10th = lagna lord in 6th from 5th (Upachaya)
  • "Lagna lord in 6th from lagna makes the person a conqueror — here, conqueror of fame"
  • "He becomes famous, then more famous, then more famous — accumulating profile of fame"
  • "Khyātakirtir = 'earned and accumulated fame,' not just momentary fame"

  • Vidyavān — learned, scholarly
  • Jñānavallabhaha — liked by people; favorite of people
  • Granthakartā — writer/author
  • Mahādaksha — extremely capable; great organizational skills
  • Bahu-putra dhana-anvitaha — many children and much wealth

Why the results make sense:

Scholarly:

  • 5th lord in 11th = in quadrant from 5th (11th is 7th from 5th) and aspects 5th → "5th house fortified from both sides; excellent scholarship"

Liked by people:

  • 11th house = 5th from 7th = emotional reaction of others toward you
  • From 11th as lagna: 5th lord = 7th lord in lagna from 11th (quadrant lord in lagna from the 11th)
  • "Other people feel comfortable and emotionally well connected with this person; easy to connect at interpersonal level"
  • "For being liked by people, 11th house is an important house"

Writer:

  • From 3rd house (communication) as lagna: 5th lord in 11th = "in 9th house from 3rd" → "fortune in communication; protects and blesses communication"
  • "Good chance he will write something or at least communicate extensively"

Very capable (Mahādaksha):

  • 5th lord in 11th aspects the 5th house → "5th house of abilities is strengthened"
  • "Also good interpersonal skills (from 11th) — capable of getting things done, organizing people"

Many children and wealth:

  • 5th lord in 11th = "7th from 5th house, aspecting 5th" → good for children
  • For wealth: 5th lord in 11th = "in 4th from 2nd" (Kendra from 2nd) — "any planet in Kendra from 2nd house should give good wealth"
  • BUT no direct Argala on 2nd house
  • Has 3/4 aspect on 2nd house from 11th
  • A5 falls in 2nd house → "person is known for his resourcefulness and wealth"
  • "5th lord in 11th: the trine lord is in the house of gains — whatever he tries, it works. Like the Telugu saying: patindha bhangaram kaodam — whatever he touches becomes gold"

5th Lord in 12th House

Sanskrit results:

  • Putra-sukho jadaha — devoid of happiness from children; no children or children have left
  • Datta-putra yuto vā — adopted child
  • Krita-putra anvito athavā — or purchased/acquired child (child obtained from another)

Why the results make sense:

No happiness from children:

  • 5th lord in 12th = in Dusthana from lagna AND from 5th house → "lagna lord of children (from 5th) in 8th house — getting from somebody else; like inheriting a child"
  • "Child obtained not in the natural way"

Positive results of 5th lord in 12th:

  • 5th house = bhakti (devotion); 12th = surrender, giving up → "lord of the house of devotion in the house of surrender — if sense of surrender is triggered, person can make great spiritual progress"
  • 5th lord = scholarship; 12th from 5th = 8th house context → "scholarship in occult subjects — astrology, tantra, hidden sciences"
  • PVNR real example: "I know someone — Aquarius lagna, Moon (5th lord) in 12th house (Aquarius's 12th = Capricorn) — he is a very famous astrologer. 5th lord in 12th gave him occult scholarship."
