Atmakaraka: Moon. Navamsa Moon at 2° Sagittarius = Karkamsa.

5th from Karkamsa — 2° Aries

• Mars at 15° Libra. His 7th house runs from about 16° Aries. 2° Aries is in the 6th from him, where the aspect climbs from 0% to 100%. About 50%. Not that strong, though it is something.
• Saturn's aspect is considerable.
• A student suggests Jupiter. The teacher wants influences on the 2nd or the 5th from Karkamsa, not on Saturn. On the 5th the only influence he takes is Saturn.
• One result of Saturn with the 5th from Karkamsa is Sabha-jada. In the beginning she was shy. That is not the crux.

"Saturn will show caution, like we said earlier, caution and patience. So she was very patient."

• Her hallmark was patience and kindness with all the devotees of Ramakrishna. Her soul looks on itself as one who must be very patient.

Karkamsa itself

• Mercury is at 2° Sagittarius, very close. Ketu is far away but also in the 1st.
• Mercury gives analytical ability; Ketu gives critical ability.
• She wrote no books. Her teachings were taken down by her students, Saradananda among them. She was a person of great learning who taught sublime truths in very simple language. She too demystified.

2nd from Karkamsa — 2° Capricorn

• Saturn's influence is there again.
• Jupiter at 26° Capricorn: on a cusp at 2° his aspect is negligible.
• Mars: very minor.
• Sun at 20° Gemini: 100% on 20° Sagittarius, 75% on 20° Capricorn. 2° Capricorn is nearer the first. About 89–90%. The Sun is the strongest influence on the 2nd.
• Sun is music and rhythm on one side. He is also the one who wears the sword.

"Wearing a sword is not necessarily wearing a sword and killing people. It is basically having the command."

How it showed

• Ramakrishna left the world in 1886 with the seeds only planted. His disciples were still doing sadhana, still struggling. Vivekananda founded Belur Math and died soon after.
• She lived till 1920. She was never president or secretary; Brahmananda, Sivananda and others held the offices. After the Math was established she lived there and initiated people in mass.
• She helped the office bearers in administrative matters and took decisions for them.
• Whatever Vivekananda and Ramakrishna established, she made it grow.
• Saturn on the 5th: patience. Sun on the 2nd: administration, governance and decision-making, put to use.

Atmakaraka: Sun. Navamsa Sun at 25° Sagittarius = Karkamsa.

5th from Karkamsa — 25° Aries

• Mercury is in Aries, less than ten degrees from the cusp.
• Mars owns the sign, and is in Taurus with Saturn.
• Saturn at 2° Taurus is seven degrees past the cusp: in the 5th house.
• Mars: Naiyayika, crisp logic.
• Mercury: eloquence and analysis, the Mimamsaka. Vivekananda was a good analyst.
• Saturn: the class says at once that he was not shy. The teacher gives the reasons. Saturn is with Mars. Mars owns the 5th. The Atmakaraka is the Sun, a fiery planet, in Sagittarius, a fiery sign; the whole disposition of the soul is fiery.
• Saturn is not only shyness. Saturn is a yogi and a renunciate, one who can roam the world. Venus is the other yogi, and Saturn is in a Venusian sign.
• Taurus is an earthy sign and its symbol is the bull. It stands for hard work. The sign a planet occupies changes its nature, as Sagittarius made Ketu show Vedic knowledge.

"Saturn in a Venusian sign can show a yogi, an ascetic who is traveling the world, who is working hard, because Taurus is the sign of working hard."

• His skill is the ability to renounce the world and strain himself. By 39 his health was broken. He travelled without rest, to the US and the UK several times. Some hold that the later work of Paramahansa Yogananda and Prabhupada was made possible by him. He woke the West to Indian philosophy.

Karkamsa itself

• Moon at 7° Gemini aspects 25° Sagittarius. The point lies between his 7th and 8th cusps, where the aspect falls only from 100% to 75%. About 85–90%.
• Moon and Sun both act on Karkamsa. Moon is melody, Sun is rhythm: a good singer.
• Vivekananda sang at a puja in someone's house. Ramakrishna went into samadhi during the song, saw who he was, and asked him to come to the temple. That is how they met.

2nd from Karkamsa — 25° Capricorn

• Saturn at 2° Taurus. His 10th-house aspect falls on 2° Aquarius. On 2° Capricorn it is half; just below 2° Aquarius it is three-quarters. 25° Capricorn is seven degrees short of that. About 70%.
• Saturn also owns Capricorn. Owner and 70% aspect: the main influence on the 2nd is Saturn.
• Saturn in Taurus again: the roaming ascetic who works hard. His soul's view: I must labour, I must serve people.

From the Navamsa lagna — what he did on the ground

• "Karkamsa is one thing. Also look at lagna."
• Jupiter is the 5th lord. The teacher first says Venus is in the 5th. A student corrects him: Venus is at only 4° Pisces, so by the house cusp he is in the 4th. The teacher agrees. Venus is not that important. Jupiter is.
• Jupiter is the 5th lord and aspects the 5th strongly. Skill from the lagna: knowledge of the rishis.
• The 2nd from lagna has the Sun and is owned by Jupiter. Putting the skill to use: spreading the knowledge of the rishis.
• So what he did on the ground was teach.

"What his soul saw itself as was, I need to serve people. His soul didn't consider itself to be somebody who is born to teach people. He thought that he came to serve people."

In the site's chart the Navamsa lagna is Scorpio 24°. Jupiter is at 6° Scorpio, Venus at 4° Pisces, the Sun in Sagittarius.

The amsa of Shiva

• Some believe Vivekananda had an amsa of Shiva. Ramakrishna is believed to be an incarnation of Vishnu.
• In August 1886, with Ramakrishna dying, Vivekananda wondered whether this suffering man could be God. Unasked, Ramakrishna said he was the same one who was Rama and Krishna, "not in your Vedantic sense". Years earlier Bhairavi Brahmani, learned in Tantra, Vaishnavism and the Puranas, had seen in him the signs given for Vishnu's incarnation, and two great scholars who examined him agreed.
• Nag Mahasaya (Durga Charan Nag) was the most humble of Ramakrishna's disciples. Vivekananda said after his 1897 return that he was the greatest saint he had met. Girish put it this way: Mahamaya cannot bind two people. Vivekananda grows bigger and bigger until her fetters are too small. Nag Mahasaya grows smaller and smaller until they cannot hold him.
• A devotee begged Nag Mahasaya for initiation. He refused: I am useless, I initiate nobody. Then, as if inspired, he said: I will not initiate you, but Shiva himself will. Some years later that devotee, watching Vivekananda meditate, saw Shiva sitting in his place. A year after that Vivekananda called him and gave him a mantra.
• The teacher notes that some take Ramakrishna to be Shiva's incarnation. He holds it very likely that Ramakrishna had an amsa of Vishnu and Vivekananda an amsa of Shiva.

"Shiva is the servant. Vishnu can come as a king or as a Brahmin or whatever, but Shiva doesn't really need anything. He is just a servant."

• If you are Shiva, teaching Vedanta is beside the point. You come to earth because you have compassion for the world and want to serve.
• The strong Saturn on both the 5th and the 2nd from Karkamsa: he looked on himself as a servant of the people.

D-20

• The 5th from Karkamsa is 18° Cancer, and Moon is in it. Saturn aspects it.
• Saturn's aspect: persistence. Saturn is again in a Venusian sign, as in the Navamsa: persistent hard work.
• Moon: compassion and kindness. In his early days Vivekananda was a stern logician who went by Advaita. As he evolved he would shed tears in front of others on hearing of people's suffering, such as plague in a street of Calcutta. Fiery by nature, and known as very compassionate.

Swami Sivananda

Sivananda of Rishikesh, founder of the Divine Life Society, not the Sivananda who was a disciple of Ramakrishna. The class does not read out the birth data. The chart on this page is the one used in the earlier lessons; it reproduces every placement below.

Atmakaraka: Sun. The teacher says Sun beats Moon by a second of arc. Navamsa Sun at 24° Libra = Karkamsa.

On the site's chart Moon leads Sun by three minutes of arc, so the chart names Moon as Atmakaraka. Sun and Moon are both at 24° Libra in Navamsa, so Karkamsa is the same.

5th from Karkamsa — 24° Aquarius

• Rahu is there.
• Mars aspects very closely: 17° on 24°. A strong Martian aspect.
• Rahu and Ketu were given mathematics; the teacher reads it as the modern, advanced sciences. Sivananda was a physician. Rahu can show modern medicine.
• He was a surgeon. Rahu's machinery need not be physically big. It is complicated machinery, high technology. Whatever was high-tech for his time, he would have used.
• A student: Rahu in Aquarius, a philosophical sign that Rahu owns, shows philosophy. The teacher accepts it. A philosopher.
• Aquarius is also owned by Saturn. When one of the two lords sits in the sign, the other gives the sign's results more. So the 5th lord is really Saturn.
• Saturn is exalted and is in the 12th house from Karkamsa. The lord of skill, exalted, the planet of hard work and service. A strong Saturn shows service.
• Rahu shows dealing with outcasts and the underprivileged.
• He taught Vedanta and Raja Yoga, and he served everyone. He gave free medical service. He served people with leprosy above all, because nobody else would. That is Saturn and Rahu on Aquarius.

The writer — Venus on Karkamsa

A student asks how the chart explains the great writer. Another answers: Venus has the 7th aspect.

• Venus has an exact aspect on Karkamsa at 24° Libra.
• He has a 75% aspect on the 2nd from Karkamsa as well.
• He is the lord of Karkamsa. The lord aspecting it almost 100% shows the soul's very nature.
• Mercury is in the Karkamsa sign but is really in the 12th house.
• Venus: a very good communicator and a very learned person. A student recalls that Parashara gave "a little less" for Venus as author. The teacher: yes, but here his influence is very strong. Jupiter, Venus and Mercury were all given for writing.
• He was a very good orator. Oratory is from Mercury and Venus, especially Venus.

Saturn dominates

• Saturn dominates, and that is service.
• The Venus–Saturn axis shows a yogi. Saturn is exalted in an airy sign: Raja Yoga. He was a Raja yogi and practised Hatha Yoga.
• He taught Vedanta to everyone. Raja Yoga he called very risky, not for everybody. He wrote down pranayama, the Hatha Yoga practices and Kundalini so that the knowledge would not be corrupted for the future. He did not popularise them.
• What he popularised: serve people, God is in people.
• He reached Nirvikalpa Samadhi in 1927, meditating in a hut with scorpions and snakes. Yet he did not take the Advaita that calls everything seen Maya. He said life is divine. To perceive a beautiful woman or a dangerous leper is Maya. That someone is sitting there is not delusion. See divinity in it and serve it.

"As long as duality is there, it is there. Serve it. Don't deny it, but serve it."

Moon with the Atmakaraka

• In Navamsa Moon and Sun are in almost perfect conjunction. Moon is the planet of compassion. Moon in Karkamsa with Venus aspecting: very compassionate.
• Only with that strength of soul could he go to a colony of lepers, wash their feet, bathe them, clean them and then leave.
