BPHS — 10th Lord in the First Three Houses

10th Lord in the 1st House (Lagna)

Verse: vidvān (scholar), khyāta (famous), dhanī (rich), kavi (poet), bālye rogī (sick in childhood), sukhī paścāt (happy later), dhana-vṛddhi dine dine (money grows day by day).

A quadrant lord in lagna blesses the lagna. In general a very good placement.

• Scholar: A student suggests the aspect on the 4th. The teacher takes the 5th house of scholarship instead. From the 5th, the 10th house is the 6th, an upachaya, and that lord sits in the 9th from the 5th, a trine. The 6th is also the house of fights and of solving obstacles, so the 10th from lagna is the house of putting scholarship to use: arguing, debating, discussing. So this is not just a scholar, but a scholar who puts the knowledge to use in society.
• Famous: Fame is seen from the 5th and the 10th, and lagna is another, secondary, house of fame. The 10th lord is in lagna itself.
• Wealthy: The three artha trikoṇas (2nd, 6th, 10th) all work for the 2nd house. The 10th is the 9th from the 2nd: the bhāgya and protection of wealth. A strong 10th lord compensates for a weak 2nd lord, because to do big things in society a person needs resources. This is not a billionaire with a big bank balance. For all the work he needs to do, he has enough, whether money or some other resource.
• He spends it: From the 2nd house this planet is in the 12th, the house of giving up. And the purpose of the 10th is not to accumulate but to accumulate and then put to use. He spends to get his job done.
• Poet (kavi): The 10th is the work you do; lagna is your basic personality. The 10th lord in lagna is a person whose very personality is embedded with his work. A minister or a carpenter goes home and the job is over; an old-time court poet is a poet wherever he is. The poet is only an example of someone who lives his work all the time.
  • A student offers the 5th house for poetry. The teacher: poetry is creativity, and the seat of creative skills (poetry, painting) is the 3rd house. The 10th lord in lagna has argalā on the 3rd house, so there can be a creative side to the career.
• Sick in childhood: The 2nd house is an important house for bālāriṣṭa and other childhood problems. From the 2nd, the 9th lord of protection is in the 12th house of loss: some loss of protection in childhood.
• Happy later: A quadrant lord in lagna keeps the lagna, the vitality, strong.
• Money grows day by day: Not literal. Throughout life he keeps gaining; whatever he wants keeps happening. Take the 11th house of gains as lagna: this planet is in the 3rd, an upachaya, and he is the 12th lord from the 11th. The 12th lord in the 3rd is a Viparīta yoga with respect to gains (the rule is set out under the 12th lord, below). Even if he is stuck for a while, the end is positive. It may come suddenly.

"What it really means is somebody whose very personality is embedded with his work. He basically personifies his work. In other words, he lives and breathes his work."

10th Lord in the 2nd House

Verse: dhanavān (wealthy), guṇa-saṁyukta (endowed with good qualities), rāja-mānya (respected by kings), vadānya (of giving nature), pitrādi-sukha-saṁyukta (happiness from father and the rest).

• Wealthy: From the 2nd house of wealth, the 9th lord of protection is in lagna itself. Brilliant. Better than the previous placement: this person is actually quite wealthy.
• Good qualities: Not dharma here. Counted from the 9th house, this planet is the 2nd lord in the 6th, which is not great. The quality meant is seen from lagna, the basic personality. The 10th is honour in society, and its lord in the 2nd has argalā on lagna. He conducts himself so that he commands respect: well behaved, good manners, knows the ways of society. He is also in the 2nd house of speech, so he talks smoothly and in a way that keeps his standing.
• Respected by kings: Take the 10th house of honour as lagna. Its lord is in the 5th from it: excellent pūrva-puṇya with respect to honour. He is honoured by powerful people.
• Charitable: From the 12th house of giving, this planet is the lord of one kāma trikoṇa (the 11th) placed in another (the 3rd). From any house, one kāma trikoṇa lord in another is auspicious for that house. He wants to fulfil the 12th house and sits in the house of initiative. When he wants to give, he does not look back.
• Happiness from father and the rest: A student objects: counted from the 9th, he is the 2nd lord in the 6th. The teacher agrees that nothing concrete can be said about the father from this, and that taking the 9th as lagna tells what happens to the father, not how the relationship is. The verse says "father etc.", so he reads it as family happiness. The 2nd house of family is occupied by the planet that is the 9th lord counted from the 2nd; a 9th lord in lagna is a brilliant combination. Because it is a 9th lord, the fatherly, elder figures of the family take good care of it. The extended family runs smoothly.

10th Lord in the 3rd House

Verse (111): bhrātṛ-bhṛtya-sukhānvita (happiness from brothers and servants), vikramī (brave), guṇa-sampanna (virtuous), vāgmī (eloquent), satya-rata (truthful).

• Happy with brothers: The lord of work and honour is in the 3rd house of siblings. Not merely attached to them: his work and standing in society have to do with siblings. In business with them, or active in society with them. "XYZ Brothers and Co."
• Happy with servants: Servants are the 6th house. From the 6th, the 5th lord is in the 10th. He is lucky in the work his servants do.
• Brave: Not necessarily bold. From the 3rd house as lagna, the 8th lord is in lagna, which shows sudden ups and downs in initiative. Not a very positive combination, but a positive result is possible, and that is what Parāśara gives. The lord whose job is to make him accomplish something sits in the house of initiative, so he has to get him started. He may struggle, but he finds the courage. The initiative comes less from desire than from the sense "that needs to be done, so let me do it".
• Virtuous: Here it is dharma. The 10th lord in the 3rd aspects the 9th house (graha dṛṣṭi, the 7th aspect), linking karma with dharma. He has a sense of dharma in his conduct in society. Contrast the 2nd house, where the same word meant a suave, charming personality.
• Eloquent: The 3rd house of communication holds the lord of standing in society. From the 2nd house of speech he is the 9th lord, in the 2nd from the 2nd (bhāvāt bhāvam). He also has argalā on the 2nd house. An excellent communicator, very articulate.
• Truthful: The same planet, in the house of communication with argalā on the house of speech, aspects the 9th house of dharma. The sense of dharma comes into his speech.

12th Lord in the 3rd, 6th or 8th from a House (Viparīta)

Raised under "money grows day by day" (10th lord in lagna = 12th lord from the 11th, placed in the 3rd from the 11th). A student says he thought of it but took it as negative, because the 12th lord pulls back.

• The lords of the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th placed in one another's houses give Viparīta yoga: 3rd lord in the 6th, 6th lord in the 8th, 8th lord in the 3rd, and so on. A lord of a bad house in a bad house.
• 12th lord in the 3rd: The planet whose job is to give loss is in the house of initiative. It can mean the person lacks initiative in making a profit. It can also mean he does not need it: the 3rd is the seed of desire, "I want something", and that push is absent because enough is already coming.
• 12th lord in the 6th: The planet of losses in the house of fighting. It can mean no fighting spirit. It can also mean no need to fight.
• Take the house concerned as lagna (the 11th for gains, and so on). If its 12th lord is in its 3rd, 6th or 8th, there is a Viparīta Rāja yoga for that house.

"So there can be some setbacks, but eventually it will be good."

The same rule is used again for the 10th lord in the 6th: he is the 12th lord from the 11th, placed in the 8th from the 11th, so gains are not harmed.
