BPHS Chapter 24 — 12th Lord in the First Three Houses (1–3)

Core principle: the 12th lord's agenda is expenses, loss, giving up, humility. Wherever he sits, he tries to make the person spend or let go in the matters of that house. For each result, also take the house concerned as lagna and see which lord he becomes from there and where he sits.

These verses are general guidelines. A student pointed out his own 12th lord in the 3rd; the teacher answered that the "hates others" result did not apply to him, and that the 9th lord, the lagna lord and their relationships must be seen before applying a verse.

"Without all those, just based on a formula, sometimes it works. We have seen examples also in the past, but it doesn't always work. These are general guidelines and hints for how to see things."

12th Lord in 1st House (Lagna)

BPHS results:

• Spendthrift (vyayaśīla)
• Physically weak (durbala)
• Kapha diseases (kapha-rogī)
• No wealth, no knowledge (dhana-vidyā-vivarjita)

Why spendthrift: planets in lagna control the nature and attitude of the person. The planet whose agenda is spending sits in the house of the person's nature.

"Somebody whose agenda is to make him spend is in the house that shows the nature of the person. So by nature he will be inclined to spend a lot. He doesn't hesitate to spend money."

Why weak: lagna is health and vitality. The 12th is loss and compromise of it. The 12th can also give hospitalisation, but the verse only says weak in general.

Why kapha diseases:

• The natural 12th sign is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. The 12th lord has to do with the watery element.
• The feet (12th house) are one of the seats of extra water. Water's natural seat is the lungs; when there is too much, some is stored in the feet. Press the feet of a strongly Kapha person and you see the water.
• The teacher calls this "a very vague kind of result". If the 12th lord in lagna is Saturn, do not conclude Kapha. It depends on which planet it is.
• The same reasoning from the natural zodiac: the natural 5th is Leo, the Sun's sign, so the 5th house and its lord stand for the digestive fire. A badly placed 5th lord (say in lagna with the 6th lord) can give Pitta disease — again depending on the planet.

Why no wealth: he is a spendthrift. And from the 2nd house, this is the 11th lord in the 12th — the giver of gains in the house of loss.

Why no knowledge: from the 5th house, this is the 8th lord in the 9th. The 8th lord (ariṣṭa) in the house of fortune takes away the fortune of the 5th — scholarship and children. Lagna also shows basic intelligence, and that suffers with the 12th lord there.

12th Lord in 2nd House

BPHS results:

• Expenses on good things (śubha-kārye vyaya)
• Dharmic (dhārmika)
• Pleasant, soft speech (priyavādī)
• Virtuous and happy (guṇa-saukhya-samanvita)

Why good expenditure:

• From the 2nd house he is the 11th lord in lagna — a good placement for accumulation.
• His agenda is to make the person spend, yet he makes the 2nd house grow. Both are true only if the spending is wise investment.
• So śubha-kārya here need not mean building a temple. Whatever he spends results in more resources.

Why dharmic:

• From the 9th house he is the 4th lord in the 6th. The 4th from the 9th is the direction of dharma.
• The 2nd house is the 6th from the 9th: the house of dharma-yuddha. Planets in the 2nd show how you fight for dharma.
• So whatever direction he has towards dharma, he puts into action boldly.

"Dharma is something that you fight for. There are certain things that you don't fight for. But if at all there is one thing that is worth fighting for, it is dharma."

The teacher's example: Kṛṣṇa made Arjuna kill his gurus, his grandfather, his cousins and his own brother Karṇa — for dharma.

Why soft-spoken: the 12th is the house of humility, of giving yourself up. The planet whose agenda is humility is in the house of speech. He says "please do, it will be useful", not "you must do this". (Priyavādī is not mitabhāṣī, one who speaks little.)

Why virtuous: virtues are seen from lagna, the 5th and the 9th. From the 5th this planet is nothing special. The virtue comes from the 9th: his virtues relate to dharma and standing up for it.

Why happy: from the 4th house he is the 9th lord in the 11th. The 9th lord in the 9th, 10th or 11th is brilliant. He is happy and has many conveyances.

12th Lord in 3rd House

BPHS results:

• No happiness from siblings (bhrātṛ-sukha-vivarjita)
• Hates other people (anya-jana-dveṣī)
• Looks after his own body; selfish, self-centred

Why no happiness from siblings:

• With the 3rd as lagna he is the 10th lord in lagna. That is good for the siblings themselves: career-minded brothers who do well.
• But the relationship with the brother is about the native, so take lagna as lagna. From there a dusthāna lord is in the 3rd.
• "They may be doing well, but he has a problem with them."

Why he hates others:

• Others are the 7th, but hating, fights and quarrels are the 6th.
• From the 6th he is the 7th lord in the 9th: a kendra lord in a trine, superbly placed. He is very good for the 6th house, so he gives many enemies.
• You get many enemies by looking at everybody as an enemy.

Why selfish:

• The 3rd is the fire of the chart: initiative, bravery. The planet of accepting losses, placed where he must show fire, loses the humility.
• The 3rd is an upachaya from lagna, not from the 12th. It makes lagna grow. Lagna keeps and looks after the body; the 12th gives it up for others. The two have opposite agendas.
• So his own agenda suffers. He takes care of himself with a lot of initiative.
• The teacher adds that this does not necessarily show selfishness.

A partial viparīta yoga (a student's question): possible. Someone who wavers and lacks initiative suddenly gets it and acts.

Ayurvedic Doṣas and Planets

Raised while explaining why the 12th lord in lagna gives Kapha disease.

Reading the constitution: see the planets influencing lagna, the lagna lord, and the 6th and 8th lords and houses.

Body types:

• Kapha: stout, strong personality. Not all are fat, but they put on weight easily. Strong Jupiter or Venus in lagna tends to give this.
• Vāta: strong movement and metabolism; what they eat is digested and goes out. Thin, sometimes weak.
• Pitta: in between, muscular, given to exercise and sports.

The guṇas are separate from the doṣas. Tamas has nothing to do with Pitta. Each doṣa can have a sāttvic, rājasic or tāmasic side.

What each doṣa does in balance: Kapha absorbs the water and solids you take in. Pitta is the fire that digests. Vāta moves the nutrients around. All three are needed. Trouble starts when one becomes too strong or touches the roga sthānas, the 6th and 8th.

Eating by constitution:

• Too much Pitta: too much digestive fluid. The food "burns" (a metaphor) and gives little energy; the person is always hungry. Take foods that keep the digestive fluids in check. Do not eat in small bits — a little food makes the body release a lot of juice, the unused juice turns to gas and gastric trouble. Eat more at a time.
• Vāta: not enough digestive fluid; food spoils undigested. Take spices that increase it, or eat a little at a time so the little juice there is suffices.

The teacher's own chart as the example

• Virgo lagna, an earthy sign. Lagna lord Mercury is in Aries, which also holds the 8th lord and the 6th lord. So Aries and Mars give some Pitta.
• But the disease-giver, 6th lord Saturn, is in the 8th house and is a Vāta planet. Lagna is about 14° and Saturn about 15°: he sits at the centre of the house, the others are away from it.
• The 6th house has the Moon and Rāhu. The Moon is of Kṛṣṇa Chaturdaśī, almost empty, so a Vāta graha. Rāhu is close to the centre of the house and co-owns it with Saturn.
• Result: despite the Pitta of Aries and Mars, both the constitution and the main problem are Vāta.

D16 Ṣoḍaśāṁśa (Kalāṁśa) — The Mental State

Said during the chart analysis, when asked which chart shows emotional stability.

"D16 is not just the chart of vāhanas, vehicles. It is the chart of your mental state."

"It shows the phase of your mind. Mind will be happy sometimes, unhappy sometimes. That is shown by D16, even though we don't know exactly how to see it."

• Mental peace and happiness are sukha, the 4th. But the chart is not D4. 16 is 12 + 4: the second harmonic of the 4th, the mental level.
• That is why D16 is also called Kalāṁśa. The Moon has 16 kalās, phases up to Pūrṇimā. The 16th division shows the phases of the mind.
• D30 is also useful for disturbances in the mind, but it is the chart of sins and evils — the more serious things, the wrong acts a person may do because of the instability. It also shows diseases that come from subconscious roots. Unhappiness seen in D16 can show up as sickness when D30 agrees.
